  1. Not that it helps right now, but on the film's website, the Gene Siskel Film Center is listed as a venue with "date coming soon." I hope soon really means soon.
  2. Yikes. Didn't realize it went both ways. I hope they realize the "improvements" really don't improve anything.
  3. This will be playing here at AFI Silver starting next weekend. I will be there. I fully expect to cry.
  4. I don't know if this will help since I have a BlackBerry using Android, but my yahoo email used to disappear on my phone automatically when I deleted it from my PC. Now, I have to refresh the page in the app and the read/deleted emails will disappear. I don't know if you have a way to refresh the app page, but if that works, it's better than deleting each email separately. Good luck.
  5. I don't think I saw this posted... but it seems that the angry yam doesn't even remember promising to keep the (small number of) Carrier jobs in the country... great. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/12/01/donald-trumps-is-shocked-that-carrier-took-him-literally-that-doesnt-bode-well/?hpid=hp_rhp-top-table-main_fix-trumpliteral535p%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&utm_term=.926744c1177a
  6. @aradia22, I know you don't drink or like sports (because those are the things I'd do go get me out of a mood. Okay, I'd drink anyway...). I wish there was a way you could go see your favorite show, but that's not the nature of theatre... I hope you find a volunteer match. And meanwhile, I like the favorite TV show, snack or book. Those always help me. Best of luck!!
  7. Back in my cookie-baking days, this was the cookie most requested from, well, everyone. It's easy. And really good. http://madaboutmaida.blogspot.com/2011/12/mulattoes.html I left out the nuts because too many people don't like them. Now, I bring these with me to any party. Also really easy. And really good. And no actual baking! http://mhbakeoff.blogspot.com/2011/06/alfred-knopf-peanut-butter-candy.html I've never make anything from a Maida Heatter cookbook that wasn't spectacular.
  8. I'd tell my dad (he was an accountant, but always wanted to work in government), but he's dead. If he weren't, he'd watch BillO, in addition to Rachel and Lawrence and Chris Hayes, just because he was a total political junkie. He'd love this as his life motto was "I don't want to die because I want to see how bad it can get." I miss him.

  11. Great opinion piece by Charles Blow in the NYT about not normalizing the situation http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/23/opinion/no-trump-we-cant-just-get-along.html?action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=opinion-c-col-left-region&region=opinion-c-col-left-region&WT.nav=opinion-c-col-left-region

  13. Mr ebk is a huge fan of Mrs Betty Bowers and often reads me her stuff. It's good stuff.
  14. RIP Sharon Jones. I'm crushed.
  15. Dammit dammit dammit dammit
  16. Jazz, blues singer/songwriter Mose Allison has died. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/16/arts/music/mose-allison-a-font-of-jazz-and-blues-dies-at-89.html Sigh..........
  17. They opened the show after Newtown with a choir singing Silent Night. I remember that one. Haven't looked to see if there were any others.

  19. I feel like I've been punched in the gut. Seriously on the verge of tears now.
  20. Oh right - I did bring this up here (it was also discussed in the PBS thread and has it's own thread in the Specials category- which is far too many places for this). I love the show, but this production didn't do much for me. I've never seen Imelda Staunton in anything. She can certainly sing. But her Rose was almost unhinged through the whole show. Way too over the top for me. The only place it worked was Rose's Turn. I could see how that would have worked wonderfully in an actual theatre, even though it didn't quite work on TV. Otherwise, nothing stood out for me during the evening. I'm glad I watched it because now I'm not interested in seeing it if it comes to NY. If you can see it on PBS (or on the website), or if you've already subscribed to BroadwayHD, by all means, give it a shot if you're at all interested. I wouldn't buy it on BroadwayHD though. Let me say that my favorite part of the show was Lin-Manuel introducing it as part of the PBS Fall Arts Festival.
  21. Thank you for this suggestion. I was going to send them and Planned Parenthood and...others...money, but never thought of a monthly donation (I do that with the local food bank). And I think it was waaaaaaay earlier in this thread that we were talking about champagne... well, I decided I'd get the really old, cheap bottle that had been sitting in the fridge door out of the way so I could put the bottle I was planning to open on Tuesday there (and make more room on the shelf). So I opened the old bottle (13 years old - there was a sticker on the label about it being a gift for my sister's work anniversary in 2003!) and it was ... fine! So we'll be drinking old champagne tonight. I'm shocked. And hopeful that this is a good sign. At least that's what I'm telling myself. L'Chaim everyone!!
  22. I think it was just a send-up of a typical post-game sports team press conference. A great idea that I'm surprised never came up before.
  23. Agree. The open had me in tears. The monologue was excellent. And the rest of the show actually made me laugh (mostly). I thought WU was great. And I love Sheila Sovage. And Leslie and Kyle. And... a pretty good show, all in all.
  24. Me too! I've been numb, but I teared up there.
  25. I went out with Mr. ebk tonight to an informational picket line at a local arts institution. There's a labor issue on the table, so the union was out making folks aware. Then we went out for pizza. I feel better.
