  1. Oh right - I did bring this up here (it was also discussed in the PBS thread and has it's own thread in the Specials category- which is far too many places for this). I love the show, but this production didn't do much for me. I've never seen Imelda Staunton in anything. She can certainly sing. But her Rose was almost unhinged through the whole show. Way too over the top for me. The only place it worked was Rose's Turn. I could see how that would have worked wonderfully in an actual theatre, even though it didn't quite work on TV. Otherwise, nothing stood out for me during the evening. I'm glad I watched it because now I'm not interested in seeing it if it comes to NY. If you can see it on PBS (or on the website), or if you've already subscribed to BroadwayHD, by all means, give it a shot if you're at all interested. I wouldn't buy it on BroadwayHD though. Let me say that my favorite part of the show was Lin-Manuel introducing it as part of the PBS Fall Arts Festival.
  2. Thank you for this suggestion. I was going to send them and Planned Parenthood and...others...money, but never thought of a monthly donation (I do that with the local food bank). And I think it was waaaaaaay earlier in this thread that we were talking about champagne... well, I decided I'd get the really old, cheap bottle that had been sitting in the fridge door out of the way so I could put the bottle I was planning to open on Tuesday there (and make more room on the shelf). So I opened the old bottle (13 years old - there was a sticker on the label about it being a gift for my sister's work anniversary in 2003!) and it was ... fine! So we'll be drinking old champagne tonight. I'm shocked. And hopeful that this is a good sign. At least that's what I'm telling myself. L'Chaim everyone!!
  3. I think it was just a send-up of a typical post-game sports team press conference. A great idea that I'm surprised never came up before.
  4. Agree. The open had me in tears. The monologue was excellent. And the rest of the show actually made me laugh (mostly). I thought WU was great. And I love Sheila Sovage. And Leslie and Kyle. And... a pretty good show, all in all.
  5. I went out with Mr. ebk tonight to an informational picket line at a local arts institution. There's a labor issue on the table, so the union was out making folks aware. Then we went out for pizza. I feel better.
  6. I watched that. It was a different take on Rose than I've seen before. She almost seemed unhinged at times. I'm still trying to decide how I feel about it.
  7. Way back in the late 70s, Mr. Vaughn did a one-man show about FDR that played the theatre where I worked for a couple of weeks. A lovely man.
  8. The West End production of Gypsy is starting now on PBS. I haven't read anything about it, so I have no idea it it's any good.

Have fun!! We'll still be here when you get back. I hope.............. Let's not get crazy now. Clean??
  10. I first read this as William Shatner and was trying to figure out which episode that quote came from... Still going out to drink Italian wine tonight. My brother in Italy says I can come live with him, but I think we'll be okay...at some point. And for the folks who were worried and haven't listened to the news today (I didn't turn it on until about an hour ago), the market was up bigly today. So go ahead and open those Vanguard emails. We're okay in that department, at least for today.
  11. It did get better. I wasn't into it at the beginning either (just finished watching), but by the end, I decided I wouldn't delete it from the DVR because I think I want to watch the second half again. Stephen is so thoughtful. The closing monologue was from the heart.
  12. I'm exhausted, so I'm going to try to sleep. Thanks for the company, all. We'll get through this. We have to.
  13. I'm glad I'm here with you all. I cannot formulate any coherent thoughts tonight and you're all helping me through. My SIL in Australia has called and she's mortified. My brother in Italy is horrified. I'm numb. But not numb enough that I don't want to slap Chris Matthews right in the face. He's blaming Hillary for not talking about illegal immigration. Oy vey...
  14. Fuck that noise. Get a gun. That's what Stand Your Ground is for! I'm practicing...
  15. Feel free to come over to my house and continue your stress-relieving cleaning...
  16. That's the beauty of wine - you don't have to drink it all at one time. The second bottle will only get better if you let it rest for...another day (or week, or even a couple of years) Just got home and sat down, so want to say hi to all. I have Tempranillo now (champagne for later!) Now I will go back and read all the posts. Yay!!
  17. Renee Montagne is leaving NPR's Morning Edition this week. They reran this story this morning. It's lovely. It might calm the nerves. http://www.npr.org/2016/11/08/501057578/encore-renee-montagne-remembers-a-legendary-hawaiian-voice

  19. I keep asking myself how we ended up with a Republican governor. Then I remember who the Dems nominated...
  20. About champagne - in addition to the wonderful suggestions already put out, I'm a big fan of Gruet (from New Mexico!), Mumm and Gloria Ferrer. I believe they all sell bottles in the $20 range.
  21. I have reservations for an Italian wine tasting on Wednesday night. Because...wine...
