  1. What I meant was that I don't think Matthew knew until the bag with the baby's remains were opened. I just remembered another scene they cut. Mrs. Nyall heard the Asian woman (not sure what her actual ethnicity was although I think she may have been Sylheti) crying out and she saw her husband out in the hall and she told him that he must hold her hands.
  2. I don't think they knew that it was the remains of a dead baby in the chimney or else I'm sure the police would have been involved. Also, when Marigold spoke about how the babies never made a sound, I think it was one of those situations where if a professional had been there, he or she would have known what to do to possibly get the baby breathing. A couple scenes they cut: Sisters Frances and Monica Joan are checking out a booth with the Eurovision contest recordings and Sister Monica Joan says the songs are not jaunty or seasonal enough for her and that the tenor who is the Dutch contestant is not sincere. She says she is looking for the song about the travails of the marionette and when Sister Frances finds out, she calls Reggie over because he likes the song and they all dance around. The second one is after Nancy gets back from her first day as a working midwife. She has a tray of ice cream sodas for everyone although she says she knows it isn't hot. Nancy says when she was a little girl, there was a milk bar in Cork and she always wanted to go up to the counter and have an ice cream soda but the nuns were having none of it.
  3. Another anachronism: In 1960, the Catholic Mass was still being celebrated in Latin. So the priest would have said "Corpus Christi," not "Body of Christ."
  4. I read "A Little Princess" first when I was a kid although I've read it several times since, but I didn't read "The Secret Garden" until I was an adult. "A Little Princess" was made into a 6-episode British tv series in 1986. It's the only version I've ever seen that's true to the book. It's available on PRIME although I understand they use a version that had some scenes cut out - speeches by Sara about how she thinks a princess should behave. However, someone recut the original series into 2 parts and put it on Youtube so you can see the version with those speeches in. Some other children's books or stories I remember: "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel" "Lassie Come Home" "The Story of Serapina"
  5. He wasn't really a children's author, but I loved reading Ernest Thompson Seton's stories about nature and animals. Much of his work had to do with hunting culture too. Any Lois Lenski fans?
  6. I read most of the "Shoe" books and loved them. I think I learned to "translate" British English to American from reading them and watching "Peppa Pig." Did anyone else read the Betsy Tacy (and later Tib) books?
  7. He was also in "The Green Mile." He played the prisoner who asked Tom Hanks if someone truly repented of his crime would he be allowed to go back to the time he was happiest to which Tom Hanks said he believed that to be true. Graham Greene said the time he was happiest was when he was first married to his first wife when they were teenagers and they would spend hours talking by the firelight. According to him, she was "bare breasted" so I'm assuming they did other things too.
  8. I don't think Tim's hair is any longer than it's been. He just stopped putting product into it.
  9. I've noticed that in many British shows when there's a bed scene, they sometimes show the couple wrapped up in single sheets like mummies with just bare shoulders showing to imply sexual activity has recently occurred. This is especially true when one or both of the actors involved doesn't have a camera- ready body or possibly because one or both are modest for whatever reason. I wonder why they didn't do that for Trixie and Matthew. Maybe the point was to show that she stays at his place so often, she keeps an overnight bag there with toiletries and pajamas. The little girl who played Deborah is the voice of Peppa Pig.
  10. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone else get killed off although I don't think it will be one of the other Nonnatus passengers. IOW, I don't see them killing off both Sister Julienne and Dr. Turner.
  11. I find it ironic that Jack Ashton who was a good guy in the "Call the Midwife" universe just recently played a baddie on "Casualty." Meanwhile, Marc Elliot who played a baddie on "Casualty's" sister soap "Holby City" played a good guy on "Call the Midwife." Regarding who gets killed, IMDB and the official CTM page on BBC both have their cast lists out for the series finale. On the BBC page, one of the characters who is a possible, fatality of the crash does appear on the castlist. However, that character does not appear on the IMDB list.
  12. The little girl was played by Karen Dotrice who was Jane Banks in Mary Poppins. Matthew Garber who played Michael Banks is also in it. Also, the big conflict in the film is set up when the veterinarian father chooses to operate on a blind man's guide dog rather than on Thomasina the cat because the dog is obviously more useful.
  13. Regarding housekeepers eating with the family: Does anyone remember "The Three Lives of Thomasina?" It was a Disney movie set in 1912 about a widowed Scottish vet, his young daughter and her cat who serves as kind of what we would call "an emotional support animal." Anyway, they have a housekeeper who has her meals with the family just like in "All Creatures Great and Small."
  14. She also played Bertie's formidable mother, Mrs. Pelham on "Downton Abbey." I believe her best known role is Miranda's mother on Miranda Hart's eponymous British sitcom.
  15. I'm thinking that either Lucille is going to have a stillborn baby which could tie into the abortion debate or she is going to have more than one baby. Is there any significance to the fact that Matthew has never addressed Trixie by her name?
  16. I'm watching Casualty, which is sort of the British version of ER, and Jack Ashton is guest starring! He's kind of a bad guy in this one. Incidentally, the actor who played Jimmy plays a doctor with Huntington's Chorea on the show although he has no symptoms as of yet The show is available on Britbox. Jack played Tom Hereward in case you didn't remember.
  17. I think the thing with Johnny is that he's suppprosed to be your typical spoiled shallow rich kid as Johnny. When he's the devil, he's supposed to be somewhat jaded and sophisticated like a modern-day Dorian Gray. Carson Boatman is fine in the first part. However, he lacks the acting skills to do the second. Regarding Patch and Kayla, wouldn't a better way to figure out if someone is a Catholic nun or a member of the Catholic clergy is to ask them something that would be unique to the Catholic faith and not just have them spout random Bible verses?
  18. It's funny, but I rewatched the episode right after I posted the question and of course there was a reference to Sandie Shaw singing barefoot. I obviously missed it the first time.
  19. Was Sandie Shaw the one who sang barefoot? I had one of those "history of rock music" books, and I remember there being a British girl singer who did that.
  20. She'd be better than that awful Grace for sure
  21. I see Britbox still doesn't have yesterday's episode up or at least I don't have it on mine. Has it shown up on anyone's yet? I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with it being a holiday.
  22. I wonder if Cyril's back story is based at least in part on E.R. Braithwaite who wrote "To Sir with Love" which was about his time as a teacher in an East End school in post WWII London. In the movie they changed the time to the '60s. Anyway, he was also a Guyanan who came to London hoping to get a job as a civil engineer.
  23. FWIW, I've read nothing that makes me think TPTB are looking for a way to get rid of Middleditch. I think the plan is to eventually have Drew live and work at the center.
  24. I remember D.B. Sweeney from 8 Men Out. He played Shoeless Joe Jackson.
