  1. Scenes they cut: Right before Nancy brings Mrs. Khatri to the clinic, there's a scene at Nonnatus House where Sr Veronica says Mrs. Chen has given them fortune cookies. Since they're in Chinese, she offers to translate. Sr. Monica Joan's says "To get the fruit, you must first climb the tree." "Or make a visit to the greengocer," Sr. Monica Joan observes. Phyllis's says "New learning will keep the mind young and nimble." She thinks it must be about the ventouse extractor training at St. Cuthbert's tomorrow. Sr Julienne wonders why you need such complicated new machinery when forceps have done the job for hundreds of years. Sr. Monica Joan says the best device for the deliverance of an exhausted mother is the encouragement of her midwife. Sr. Veronica asks what if that isn't enough. Phyllis says, forceps and her doctor's skill. Sr. julienne says that forceps are not without their fault and that perhaps the ventouse extractor might offer something new. Sr.Veronica says her motto is "Focus on the Future", and Sr.Monica Joan asks her sweetly if that came from a biscuit. They cut out a scene where Trixie takes Mrs. Khatri into the delivery room. She says she remembers the pain, and Trixie asks if she remembers the gas and air They cut out part of the scene where Mr. Khatri performs the ritual with the babies. One of the other mothers asks if this is like a christening and what the babies' names are. Trixie says that Hindu parents don't reveal their baby's names right away and that for now they are Khatri twins one and two. Mrs. Khatri says they will reveal the names when they leave the hospital. One of the mothers says they won't lack for dancing partners since the other three mothers have all had lads, and they're the only little girls. They cut a scene after Shelagh gets sick and Matthew brings a box of records to Nonnatus House. Nancy brings down a desk for Miss Higgins. It has a wobby leg, but Nancy says they can fix it with a tissue. Miss Higgins says no and that they need to prevent the spread of infection, not promote it.. Sr. Julienne then comes down the stairs and says that she has been on the phone to the medical locum office and that Dr. Wilbraham is not available, but Dr. Mukherjee is. Miss Higgins signals her disapproval and Sr. Julienne remarks that she recalls he was very popular with the ladies to which Nancy replies not with Miss Higgins. Right before Mr. Khatri comes by and asks about his wife and the babies, Dr. Turner and Timothy are outside talking. Timothy says that Trixie is back in the nursery and that she hasn't had any sleep. He asks his father how do you do it. Dr. Turner asks me or Nurse Franklin. Timothy answers all of you and myself too when the time comes. He asks how do you see death coming so close, chase it away and then move on as if nothing exceptional has happened. Dr. Turner says because in this job, you get used to exceptional things and that's the terror and privilege of it.
  2. I remember Trixie trying to make broiled grapefruit for Christopher. After she burned them, he tactfully suggested bread and jam instead. Also, what Cyril made was actually Eggs Florentine.
  3. Helen George will be returning to the role of Anna Leonowens for "The King and I" revival in the West End in 2024. It's a limited run from January to March.
  4. My dad was the first guy to take home ec in Wisconsin; he graduated in 1948. He punched out his gym teacher so he couldn't take phys ed and he still needed one credit. The only class open was home economics. Luckily his grandmother had already taught him how to cook and bake so it was pretty much a breeze for him.
  5. There was a scene they cut last episode where Nancy and Colette are in Nancy's room and Nancy tells Colette she has gotten her a new dress for the Maypole dance and tells her to go try it on. Trixie, who has been reading a bridal magazine, looks up and notices the box. She tells Nancy that it's from an expensive boutique and that Matthew said his wallet needed gas and air after he bought a sailor suit for Jonty there.
  6. I could imagine Cyril having the same kind of talk (only about cooking) with Trixie that Phyllis had with Nancy about money.
  7. Scenes they cut out: Right before Phyllis tells Sr. Veronica about the two newly discharged mothers, Trixie says she'll see everyone at the clinic and remind the expectant mothers to drink plenty of water in the hot weather. Nancy says she wants to get Colette a paddling pool, but wonders if she's too old for one. Trixie says they aren't too old and that she can see them cooling off in their bikinis in the backyard. They cut out some lines in the scene with Trixie and Matthew at the market. He asks her if it's true that mille-feuilles have 1000 layers in the pastry, and Trixie says she'll find out when she makes it. She then says they provide speciality ingredients but that she has to bring a dozen eggs and she's not sure she can do that on the bus. Matthew says he'll drive her there and tries to sneak one of her strawberries. She slaps his hand away, telling him hands off her strawberries and that he might not be taking it seriously, but she is. He then says he'd be satisfied with corned beef hash and gravy. They cut out part of the scene with Joe and Sandy. Right after he greets the kids, he says "Evening, Mrs. Talbot" and kisses her cheek, moving her hair out of the way. She has a huge bruise on her neck. He tells her it's not the ideal home and that he's been at work all day and shouldn't have to start again when he gets home. They cut out part of the scene with Phyllis, Nancy and Trixie. Trixie says she's going to have dinner at Matthew's flat because his oven is big enough for a rack of lamb. Phyllis points out she is vegetarian (much to Nancy's annoyance), but Trixie assures her there will be a meat-free alternative to the entree. They cut out part of the scene with Nancy and Colette. Colette tells Nancy that Uncle Terry and Auntie Vera are taking her to Brighton for the holidays. Nancy says she's glad they're looking after her so well, but that one day they'll have a place of their own and they'll go to the beach every holiday to the point where she is begging, "Not the beach again, Mummy." Colette asks "When" and Nancy says, "Soon" but she looks worried. They cut out a scene where Lorna's mother asks Miss Higgins why they said Ian was fine the day before, and she says that some of his symptoms did not become apparent until later but that he is in the best of hands. Lorna's mother says this would never have happened if he had been a girl. They cut out a few lines where Shelagh says Lorna is desperate for news and she asks Miss Higgins if Dr. Turner has heard from the pediatrician yet. She says she connected them ten minutes ago. They cut out a scene where Sr. Veronica and Sandy are trying to get into her flat, but Sr. Veronica can't get the key to work. Sandy says that he has changed the lock. They cut part of the scene in Matthew's flat. Cyril says he has a beautiful home, and Matthew thanks him, saying it's all the better with friends. He then says that "Madame Le Chef" has ordered him to offer everyone an aperitif. You can hear Trixie groaning in the kitchen, and Matthew says he'd pass around some olives, but that he's afraid to go in the kitchen. Nancy asks if Trixie is growling and Phyllis says it sounds like she's wrestling a bear. Matthew says the bear might come off worse as he pours from a bottle. The scene changes to Sr. Veronica and Sandy at the hostel. Sandy apologizes to her, saying she spoke out of turn. Sr. Veronica says it's highly possible she acted out of turn. They cut out part of the scene with Shelagh and Patrick. He says that he once kept secret that didn't come out until they were trying to adopt a baby, and says that everything surrounding the birth of a baby is felt much more intensely. He also says that Lorna's mother not telling her about her father's hemophilia has shattered all the trust they once had. Shelagh wonders how they will build it back up. Patrick asks "How did we?" and it no longer seems to matter.
  8. I've noticed that there is a personal assistant listed for her in the credits now; I just noticed it so I don't know long it's been there. Anyway, I'm assuming that person is helping her so she can continue with the show.
  9. I love reading recaps so I was also disappointed when the ones I read here (or more precisely, the ones from the previous incarnation of this website) were unavailable. FTR, I saw the original BBC broadcasts so for me, it's more about what things the recapper chooses to highlight and their interpretations of various plot points.
  10. He joined Barbara's father on his mission to New Guinea.
  11. And Miss Nadine was the stripper who sold her fur coat to buy Val's aunt's dancing school. I think Trixie delivered her daughter.
  12. Scenes they cut out: Right after the scene where Phyllis is talking to Lucille, we see the Turner family. Patrick says "hands up everyone who remembered their PE kit" and the girls raise their hands and shout "Me." He then says "Hands up everyone taking tadpoles for the nature table," and Teddy, who is carrying a tupperware container, shouts "Me!" Patrick then says "Hands up everyone carrying a delivery bag and wearing a nurse's uniform." Shelagh, who has been rummaging around in the cupboards, apologizes for not paying attention but says she was looking for something to donate to the raffle and that she thinks she has found it; she has a liquor bottle. Patrick observes that it was a gift from a grateful patient and shouldn't they donate the Liebfraumilch which they haven't drunk since New Year. Shelagh says they'll find a use for it and besides, they never drink whiskey. Patrick asks what that paper is she's holding. Shelagh says it's the measurements for the girls' Maypole costumes which she has to take to Miss Nadine. She then admonishes Teddy not to take the top off his Tupperware box, prompting giggles from Angela and May. They cut a scene right before we see Lilian speaking to Patrick. Basically, it shows the clinic being very busy. Shelagh asks what happened nine months ago,and Nancy answers that maybe there was a power cut. We see Lilian playing peek a boo with some babies and Shelagh calls for her. They cut out a scene right before we see Lucille and Tommy outside. It's Shelagh and Cyril. Cyril is keeping an eye on the shop for Fred, who is driving Violet to the railway station so she can go to a Lady Haberdasherers' Forum in Jersey. She then says that since she's had no choice but to take over the Whitsuntide event from Miss Nadine, she wants to make sure everyone knows what they're supposed to do. She hands Cyril a paper and asks him to make sure Fred gets it. She then tells Cyril she is putting him in charge of the Maypole: retrieval, refurbishment and safe installation. Cyril says, "Of course," and Shelagh says she wishes there were more like him. Then she says, "Next, the raffle." They cut out a scene after we see Phyllis and Lucille talking about Tommy. It begins with Nancy and Colette lying on top of her bed while Trixie looks at a bridal magazine. Nancy tells Colette that instead of costumes, everyone will be wearing Sunday best with white hair ribbons. Colette says Auntie Shelagh says she can borrow one of Angela's party dresses. Nancy says there's no need and grabs a box from the floor. It's a dress that she tells Colette to try on. Trixie, who has been looking on, smiles as Colette leaves to try on the dress. She tells Nancy that the dress is from an expensive boutique and that Matthew had bought a sailor suit for Jonty there and that he said his wallet needed gas and air. Nancy says once in a while won't hurt and that she wants Colette to know she is as good as everyone else. The Monkees's "I'm a Believer" plays throughout. The scene then shifts to Cyril and Lucille's flat. She is still in bed, and Cyril takes her hand. She tells him that's not how you take someone's pulse. Cyril says maybe he just likes touching her and seeing that the girl he loves is still in there and that her heart is still beating like it always did. She says she isn't dead. Cyril asks her to get up and that he will pour her some coffee so she can face the day. She tells him there's a stain on her dress she's been meaning to deal with. Cyril takes the dress and tells her he'll get her a damp cloth. During this whole scene, Lucille is lying on her side in bed and doesn't make any indication of getting up. The scene then switches to Nancy, Phyllis and Sr. Monica Joan at Nonnatus House. Phyllis says she was hoping for a punctual start to the morning to which Nancy asks is there any other kind. Phyllis says apparently not if one is a health visitor but perhaps Sr. Veronica's concerns are less pressing. Sr. Veronica's phone has been ringing throughout and Nancy asks if she should answer it. Phyllis says no,she is not a telephonist. Sr. Monica Joan picks up the phone and says that it is Nonnatus House but there is no one to attend to their needs. After she hangs up the phone, she points out that no one has mentioned the uncharacteristic tardiness of Nurse Robinson; it is four minutes past the hour. Phyllis says she's the one who deals with latecomers. That's when Sr. Julienne comes in and Nancy greets her.
  13. FWIW, there were two incidents involving Lucille that you could chalk up to racism. The first was the woman who owned the salon where Val got her hair done. Her daughter went into labor while she was working and Lucille delivered the baby. Later, she had a debilitating stroke, and the mother blamed it on Lucille being an immigrant. The other one was the woman who gave birth in the elevator. I don't think she was necessarily racist just bitchy and stressed. She did apologize for how she spoke to Lucille. Their relationship didn't start until the filming of the South Africa episode which was long after Trixie and Tom had broken up.
  14. I don't think she was racist, just upset that someone else had gotten ahead of her. More than likely, if the woman who took her place in line had been a teenage single mom, she would have been making disparaging remarks about her. Or if you do think she was racist, maybe their shared experience of having a baby made her think differently.
  15. When Lucille got pregnant, she told Phyllis that she was on the pill but that it must not have worked. She had her miscarriage in the fall. I'm guessing she got off contraception and started trying to conceive as soon as it was possible. Given that the first episode is usually in mid-spring, she's probably been trying to get pregnant for about 5 or 6 months.
  16. Dr. Turner said the kind of breast cancer she had would not have responded to surgery.
  17. Don't forget Metrecal and the Ayds Diet Plan.
  18. Leonie Elliott was doing a play in London in early 2022, but it ended around the time filming began for this season.
  19. Scenes they cut out: Right before we see Sr. Veronica, the midwives are discussing the fact that she is a health visitor with a "specialist interest in children and families with particular regard to preventative medicine." Nancy asks isn't that what they do anyway and Phyllis says yes, but they just call it nursing. Right before we see the nuns at Compline, there's a scene with Phyllis and a pregnant woman of South Asian descent at the maternity clinic. It's clearly her first baby and Phyllis is assuring her that it's not quite her time yet and that the pains she's feeling are just her body's way of getting ready for the real thing. Shelagh is talking to Patrick about how she likes that they invited her to the gathering to meet Sr. Veronica but that she always feels awkward with sisters who knew her when she was in the religious life. He asks her why that is and she says it's because she has no regrets and she thinks they believe she ought to. She says her new life is right for her,and she thinks Sr. Veronica believes that her life is the right one for her. They cut out a scene right before Nancy goes back to see the woman with terminal cancer. Sr. Veronica is talking to Patrick and he says that he can get more information visiting a patient at home especially when it comes to issues of cleanliness and overcrowding. He mentions Greta Pickard and that he can smell Stardrops around her sink so he knows she's trying but that her toddlers reek of urine so he knows she's overwhelmed. Sr. Veronica says this is exactly the kind of family a health visitor can help. In the scene where Lucille and Phyllis are talking, Lucille tells Phyllis she's going to clean the flat and that she will be going back to work. Then there is a montage set to The Troggs' "Love Is All Around Us" which shows Cyril and Lucille dancing in their apartment, Phyllis polishing her car and Sr. Monica Joan outside painting some chairs. We also see Jessie and Olive looking at pictures in a photo album while Nancy looks on. We see Shelagh with some little girls she has picked up from dancing school; she says she's going to drop off Colette at Nancy's. After the racist speech, we see Shelagh and the Turner children at Nonnatus. Sr. Veronica says she's making sandwiches and do they want to stay for tea? Shelagh says no, because they have to get home to watch "The Monkees." Sr. Veronica asks if they have pet monkeys and Shelagh says no, it's an American show about a pop group and quite wholesome. Then Sr. Veronica sees May and says she was wondering when she would see her again. It turns out she was in charge of the Jasmine Room which was what they called the nursery in Hong Kong. She says something to May in Chinese but May asks her is that Chinese. Sr Veronica says don't worry, I'll be forgetting my Chinese too. Shelagh thanks her for looking after May and Sr. veronica thanks her back saying that one way or another, they're both still doing the same job. They cut out part of Matthew and Trixie's conversation about Fiona. Trixie says that Fiona was her parents' only daughter and irreplaceable and that having them meet her as his future wife looks as if they think otherwise. Matthew says that Fiona's parents have been very generous about him marrying again and that they think it's wonderful for Jonty. Trixie says the situation is so complicated because she was there when Fiona died, she was at Jonty's christening when everything was still so raw and that she was Fiona's midwife. Matthew says it's not complicated in his mind and Trixie says it is in hers and she gets up to leave. He tells her to sit down, that it's not a row. She says it is to her, but then he says you need two to tango.
