  1. ITA re: Adler. In Stout's defense, he was writing comparatively early on and the only clue re: Wolfe is that he was born in Montenegro...and I can't quite remember why that was significant. It's been a while! I would love it if someone would would do a Holmes adaptation where NONE of the following appeared: drug addiction, Moriarty, Adler, These appeared maybe twice in the canon, and the addiction wasn't an addiction, but they dominate every freaking Holmes story since the 1970s revival of Holmes media. I much prefer when other minor aspects are used, like Kitty Winter. That's a fresh take, not the same old tropes over and over.
  2. Syme, Nero was supposedly based on Mycroft and was implied to be the son of Sherlock and Irene Adler.
  3. Archie Goodwin, Nero Wolfe? So sort of Holmes-related.
  4. On the matter of EW and spoilers: They don't have to blurt everything out on the main page. "What did you think of that shocking moment on [insert show here] ?!!!???1?" would still grab eyeballs without spoiling the episode for people who happen to DVR a program to watch later. As it is, I never look at EW since I still carry a grudge from when they were still a print magazine and spoiled a movie. I've learned never to go to TVLine until after I've watched anything I'm interested in because they're assholes who don't know how to write a headline to entice readers without spoiling those who haven't watched yet. On the matter of liking the bad or good guy: Just because I enjoy watching a fictional character on TV does not mean I would like that person in my personal life if he was a real person, or that I condone his actions. It means I enjoy watching that fictional character on TV.
  5. I enjoy Provenza but my very favorite GW Bailey moment was when he played a psychiatrist early in St. Elsewhere. The hospital is in Boston and it's just a throwaway moment where he's on the phone at the beginning of a scene: Dr Beale: Mrs. Stevens, I'm sure your daughter-in-law is not actually a witch.
  6. The guy who plays Philip Stroh on The Closerand Major Crimes will never be anyone else to me. I can't even remember his real name. Billy Burke, maybe? I'll never be able to buy him as anything other than pure evil.
  7. The truth is that clearly that statement does not apply to all people in the U.S, or GBBO wouldn't be drawing large numbers for PBS (by PBS standards) and the article wouldn't have been written in the first place. It certainly didn't help the US version to be aired on a major broadcast network where higher viewer numbers are required than on either cable or PBS, and it certainly didn't help that it was aired in summer.
  8. My DVR "to do" list shows an episode airing at 3 a.m. next week. It's probably bumped for a pledge drive.
  9. That's why I guessed the right answer.
  10. Who is the doctor Reese said was tending to the rescued woman at the safe house?
  11. What is a cream cake? I read this in British mysteries and the mystery to me is: what is that?
  12. If I hadn't found the no knead recipe, I don't think i would've ever tried making bread. Not only do I not have space, I was nervous about having to do more with yeast than measure it. After a while, I got tired of the taste and found a recipe that used beer. All beer and no water didn't work well for me--the dough didn't rise enough and the crust was too thin. Now I'm using another recipe--half beer, half water, 1 T white vinegar. And then add more water because I was getting clumps of dry flour. I have no opinion of Jim Lahey, I've never seen or heard him, but I appreciate the no knead bread recipe that got me started.
  13. I had no idea there'd been a TV series of that, only the movie with Maggie Smith.
  14. I went with Governor General because that's what it is in Canada.
  15. Neither is "Karl Kassel's voice on your vociemail" but I don't consider "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" a talk show, it's a game show for current events. To me, @midnight is a game show for the internet. Along the same lines, the points on Whose Line Is It Anyway are a joke, and I wouldn't consider WLIIA a talk show. It's a comedy show in the form of a game show.
  16. Dr. Warren and the captain of the British guards are kind of cute. IMDB has failed me: Who was that playing Lord North?
  17. I don't mind Christine, although I didn't like the Hitler story. I did mind Brian and his need to use the entire name of the category, the amount, and please Alex every.freaking.time and his tone annoyed me.
  18. Adding to the choir, I liked the show a lot more when it was about the games and not the host.
  19. Yes, Neil Dudgeon replaced John Nettles a couple of seasons ago. There's an episode in season...13? 12?... where he's introduced as Tom Barnaby's cousin John, who is also a cop. At the end of that season, it's revealed that he transferred to Midsomer from Brighton. He and his wife are a vast improvement, imo. I've been watching them backward on Netflix.
  20. Re: Midsomer Murders: The main reason to watch is Cotswolds porn. For me the problems were 1. Everyone is so unpleasant, 2. I could never warm up to Barnaby or his wife, 3. dimwitted sargeant. I much preferred the second Barnaby and his wife, and could better tolerate the sargeant and unpleasant locals.
