S01.E04: Chapter Four - Sanctuary
krankydoodle replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Mandalorian
I thought the set and the costuming looked kind of cheap, like what you'd see in Xena or the Stargate tv show. Some of the actors also weren't great, and the plot was rushed. Despite all that, this show is mainly a Baby Yoda delivery system for me so I can still enjoy mediocre episodes if they deliver on that front. And this one had him defying Mando by continuing to mess with the console (reminding me of that cat who can't resist pushing stuff off a table) and waddling around and interacting with kids, so I was happy. My favorite bit was when Mando instructs Baby Yoda to stay put and not touch anything while he goes outside and looks around. Cut to Mando at the ship's door as it slowly opens only to look down and see that Baby Yoda is right next to him. Pedro Pascal's defeated reaction was great. And I always use closed captions when available, but they're especially helpful for this show because they'll indicate something like "[cooing]" which somehow makes it even cuter. -
Movie remakes and sequels you'd like to see

Watching The Mandalorian has reminded me of Dredd and how much I wanted more of that. I know Karl Urban kept the hope alive for a while, but a sequel is probably never going to happen. -
I enjoyed it, though not as much as I had expected to after all the glowing reviews. The cast was great across the board, but I wish we had gotten more of the family. Riki Lindhome got maybe two lines and same with Jaeden Martell. Don Johnson was a surprise. I know he's been having a bit of a career resurgence, but I didn't expect him to be so good in a comedic role. There were a lot of funny moments, like Michael Shannon coming back at Chris Evans's "Eat shit" directive with "I will not eat one iota of shit!" and Daniel Craig casually referencing "the Nazi child masturbating in the bathroom." I love star-studded whodunnits (well, any type of whodunnit really), so I really hope this does well, especially since Rian Johnson has mentioned the possibility of doing more movies featuring Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc.

Oh, well. In the meantime, I've been enjoying the BBC radio adaptation of The Curious Curate.

I forgot this was happening until I saw the TV Line review: Mad About You Revival Review: A Soothingly Bland Relic of Sitcoms Past.

This is reminding me of the plot where Alex blabs about Meredith violating protocols so Richard's wife doesn't get the placebo during the clinical trial for a potential Alzheimer's treatment. IIRC, Alex did it deliberately, but he also got iced out by everyone and I remember Owen asking him something like, "What did you expect? You betrayed the most beloved person at this hospital." Even then, I remember thinking: Really? Her?

I really liked this even though I was already spoiled on a lot of the plot developments. I loved the way they filmed the scene where Rose is floating through the sky trying to track Abra. In contrast and as other people here have already pointed out, the scene with Jacob Tremblay was rough, almost too effective. It wasn't so much the visuals (as intense as they were, I don't think they showed the actual violence), as it was his screaming that I found especially hard to endure. One of the reviews I read said this could be taken for a superhero origin story and with one of the final scenes leaving room for the possibility of more True Knot-like villains and Danny encouraging Abra not to suppress her shine, I can definitely see that. I think there was also a shot that lingers on a superhero action figure with purple hair in Abra's bedroom, and she's later shown wearing a similar purple wig when she entraps Rose.

I was hoping they'd release more episodes soon after the Halloween one, which I found disappointing. Maybe it felt a little flat because Agatha pretty much has everything she wants. I also agree with other comments here that James is a bit of a drag.

The trailer that came out the other day wasn't great, but what a cast! I'll see it for John Cho alone, but Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, Betty Gilpin, and Jacki Weaver make for an impressive lineup.

I'm glad this is getting a second season, but the quality of the show is really uneven. The last 2 episodes were especially disappointing, with Times is Tough in Musky Holler being the worst segment of the season. The Finger and The House of the Head are my favorites and most of the other segments either had actors I like (Gray Matter, Lydia Layne's Better Half) or satisfying endings (Bad Wolf Down, The Man in the Suitcase). I hope the reportedly high viewing numbers means they get a bigger budget to work with next time.

I just watched the first season on DVD and enjoyed it. It probably helped that my expectations were low because there hasn't been much buzz about the show, and there were a lot of actors in it that I like (James Wolk, Billy Magnussen, Kim Catrall, Becki Newton, and Michael Raymond-James). The subplot with the brother and sister on the run was my least favorite, but even that one had its moments.

2015's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was a pleasant surprise and I wish it had done well enough to give us a sequel. Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander were great together, as were Hammer and Henry Cavill. Plus it had a fun Hugh Grant performance. And I know he's busy with the John Wick movies and the Matrix revival, but I'd like to see Keanu Reeves do another Constantine movie. It had its flaws, but I enjoyed it and would love to see Peter Stormare and Tilda Swinton in those roles again. It probably helps that I don't know much about the source material so wasn't bothered by any liberties the movie took. -

Will & Grace: Megan Mullally to Miss Multiple Episodes of Final Season -
Sure. I just think it's odd that it wasn't even mentioned before as it was in this episode without the need for him to appear on screen. I enjoy knowing a little more about the lives of the bakers outside the tent than we've been getting this season. And I would've thought the show would jump at the opportunity to show a few interactions with cute animals now that they have a prime opportunity with Rosie's work as a vet.
-
I don't think Rosie's clips even mentioned that she was married until this episode. Meanwhile, I remember Helena's rescue dog being named and shown at least twice. Strange.

Movie remakes and sequels you'd like to see

The movies are kind of stupid but I still enjoyed them, so I'd like to see another Now You See Me sequel. If nothing else, I want to know where the plot goes after the ending to the second movie. -
Have I not been paying close enough attention, or was Alice's distress at Michael's leaving a complete surprise? Apart from calling out to one another during this episode's technical, I don't remember seeing them interact. Maybe I'm just losing interest in the show, which saddens me because it used to be one of my favorite things.

The House of the Head was great. I'm surprised by how quickly and thoroughly invested I became in the dolls' fates.
-
They kept mentioning that she tends to talk a lot, but I don't remember seeing much evidence of that. I've never really warmed to Prue, but I was surprised by how negative she was about Priya's meringue. They've generally been a bit more diplomatic in their criticism, like describing something as 'unappetizing' or 'clumsy.' To say that the color was outright horrible seemed a bit much. I wonder if they've been told to stop pulling punches during judging. I also thought it was a bit awkward of Noel to ask David about the possibility of Steph winning star baker again. I did like seeing the bakers just hanging out together, though. Anyway, I agree that the show has become much less enjoyable than it used to be.
-
From Branagh's statement about the movie: Hmmm on the 'significant new twists' bit.
-
It was kind of a joke about how Michael has freaked out so often this season to the point where Noel asked another baker if Michael was doing ok. I feel for Michael, but it's hard to enjoy the show when someone is having such a difficult time handling it.
-
I've been watching old episodes at random and this is something they've done before. That Paul admitted he's never seen Michael in meltdown mode suggests he's not spending all that much time in the tent. Paul at least made a face when leaving Helena's table after she described what she was going to make for the showstopper I think. I have to admit I laughed when he apologized to Noel at the end for sending his sister home.
-
I definitely remember seeing that before. I'll miss kooky Helena and seeing how she could twist the week's theme so her bakes could include monsters, blood, or whatnot. Noel's enjoyment of her was also fun to watch. Others have noted that some of the bakers don't seem to have watched the show before, or at least not very attentively, but I was still surprised when Michelle said something to the effect that she was just expecting to show up the day of and bake.
