  1. Are they really doing Best Picture before the lead Actor awards?
  2. He was actually the best part of Gone Girl, imo, so he's at least got that going for him.
  3. I had Nomadland winning Cinematography, but Mank was always a close second, so not much of a surprise. At this point it's very possible that Nomadland's only wins are Picture and Director.
  4. Ha! For those who don't know, he was an Executive Producer on Minari which would explain the Tulsa line
  5. Save the 85 minutes and watch a nature documentary instead. It will be infinitely better than that awful movie.
  6. In a year in which everyone is talking about not knowing or seeing the Oscar nominated films it makes no sense not to show clips. Just none whatsoever, especially when you realize this is still at its core a promotional vehicle for the industry and their films.
  7. Two Distant Strangers was not...good. I was hoping for The Present or White Eye.
  8. Nomadland has always seemed like one of those more respected than loved frontrunners, and thus was always ripe for an upset. The problem is, no other film really ever emerged as a viable alternative. I thought Minari might be that film, but it never seemed to get that big groundswell going other than with Yuh-Jung Youn. I wonder if it not being on a mainstream streaming service has hurt its chances? Promising Young Woman and The Trial of the Chicago 7 are too divisive and Mank is even more of a respect rather than love movie than Nomadland. The rest were always destined for second division status. Ultimately, I can't see any film but Nomadland taking Picture, and Zhao seems like a shoo-in for Best Director. I think Hopkins' performance is staggering and he still has a shot at winning, but Boseman is so beloved that I can't pick against him. Actress? Your guess is as good as mine. I'll give McDormand a very slight edge over Mulligan (and that pick has actually changed since I originally wrote this post). I haven't seen anything to move away from Kaluuya, and as mentioned earlier, Yuh-Jung Youn has emerged as the clear favorite in Supporting Actress. There's been a lot of buzz about The Father taking Adapted Screenplay, but I'm going to stick with Nomadland and I'm on board with Fennell and PYW taking Original Screenplay. As for the other categories, Soul will take Animated Feature and Score. Nomadland should beat out Mank for Cinematography, but the latter should win in Production Design. Ma Rainey will take Makeup/Hairstyling and should take Costume Design too, but I wouldn't count out either Emma or Mank. Sound of Metal will take Sound (duh!) and I think it grabs Editing too. My heart says "Husavik" for Song, but my head says "Speak Now." BTW, Diane Warren is responsible for some of the worst music over the last forty years. I don't care if she ever wins an Oscar. I've resigned myself to the awful My Octopus Teacher winning Documentary even though every other nominee would be a much better choice. I think A Love Song For Latasha takes Documentary Short, while If Anything Happens I Love You grabs Animated Short. I don't have a feel one way or the other for Live Action Short, so I'll just go with what I think is the best of the bunch and that was The Present. Lastly, I'm going with Quo Vadis, Aida? in an upset for International Feature Film.
  9. All the stuff with the octopus and the way that was filmed was pretty amazing and great to watch. The diver and his story really didn't do much for me, though. Too much time spent on him.
  10. I like this show, but, damn, Sarah is really annoying.
  11. Sara Waisglass, who plays Max, played a character on Degrassi (always comes back to Degrassi, lol) who has a brooding twin brother named Hunter. I wonder if that's leading to some of the confusion for some viewers?
  12. Yeah, you sometimes see an obvious lead being nominated for Supporting when it's a kid (Haliee Steinfeld being a good example), but that doesn't apply to StanfIeld. He was also being pushed as a lead too so the Academy did this all on their own. I'm disappointed to not see One Night in Miami in the Best Picture lineup. Ma Rainey, not so much. Sad about the almost total shutout of Da 5 Bloods, especially Delroy Lindo, who will probably never get this good a role and this good a chance at a nomination again. I was really hoping to avoid seeing Hillbilly Elegy. Sigh.
  13. That Ringo Starr's jacket is positioned in a way that it looks like his shirt is giving the finger and not the peace sign may just be the moment of the show for me. And after all the talk about diversity they give their top two awards to Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish. No comment.
  14. Based on the trailer above, it looks like they took a machete to Natasha Lyonne 's performance as Tallulah Bankhead. I would have liked to seen a little more of her relationship with Holiday, or rather I'd like to see that explored more in a better movie. This was largely a mess and dragged in too many parts. My favorite parts of the movie were the backstage moments of her hanging with her crew. Those were always enjoyable and the cast had a nice chemistry with each other. The acting as a whole was very good and Day was terrific, more than justifying every notice and award she's been receiving.
  15. Jahmil French, who played Dave on Degrassi has died. He was just 29.
  16. Maybe at the Oscars, but Close has actually won three Golden Globe awards. Overall, an odd show, which is to be expected these days. I thought the split screen in different cities with Fey and Poehler made things awkward and not in a good way. Between Baron Cohen, Pike, Boyega, Kaluuya, The Crown, etc, the Globes really went hard core British tonight. I'm not sure how much, if any, of a read we can get on what these results mean in terms of the Oscars, especially this year. I couldn't help but laugh at those like McDormand and Cate Blanchett, who couldn't even be bothered to appear on Zoom.
  17. The Murder Show song alone made this one of the better episodes of the season. I also really liked Cinderella, Dionne Warwick, Viking Voyager & the Boners clip. Weekend Update was strong tonight too. Overall, a pretty good episode heading into the break.
  18. I just have to keep reminding myself that this is a rich person town as the amount of money spent on all this stuff just seems insane. Austin sure likes to take after his mother, doesn't he?
  19. My biggest worry about this show is that like Teenage Bounty Hunters they're going to have a great season and set up a juicy Season 2 only to have Netflix crush us all with cancelation. Yeah, still not over Teenage Bounty Hunters getting the axe. I really love the way they present the relationship between Ginny and her friends. It seems very authentic to me, even as someone who was never a teenage girl. The more shady shit we see in Georgia's background the more intriguing I find her. Even though it was a little cheesy I did like the reveal of Joe and Georgia meeting as teens. I'm hoping at some point we get a pay off of him remembering.
  20. Katie Douglas was in an Even Steveninsh like Canadian sitcom entitled Raising Expectations with Jason Priestly and Molly Ringwald as the parents and Luke Bilyk (Drew on Degrassi) as one of her brothers. In other it's a small Canadian TV industry world news Marcus's girlfriend is played by the sister of Ray Ablack (Joe). I was going to watch the whole thing anyway but the pilot definitely did enough to get me very much interested in to seeing where things go.
  21. Yep, and unlike most here I thought the writing was again pretty weak and tired in this episode. The host was very good, though, and was probably able to elevate things a bit. My favorites of the night were the pre recorded stuff, especially Ego's song and the job interview. Pete was great as Cuomo.
  22. There's also an older sister/daughter who is still alive and wasn't mentioned. I thought there was a lot of skimming of the surface and as mentioned they really rushed things at the end. It definitely could have been two parts like the Eagles documentary. I did enjoy it a lot, though, and loved seeing all the old clips. I appreciated how much the non Gibb band members were featured.
  23. They've emphasized the relationship between Hope and Huck to the point that I think there's been at least one scene involving just the two of them in each episode. I don't recall seeing any with just Huck and Iris. That could be a red herring, but as mentioned, this show doesn't appear clever enough to even attempt to pull something like that off.
  24. It was enjoyable enough, but the only things that made me laugh out loud was Adele in the bushes during the Bachelor sketch, her breaking up during the Africa sketch and Weekend Update, especially the Village People. Adele did seem up for anything, which is a good thing in a host, especially a non actor. Very much looking forward to next week.
  25. I was fine when they introduced her as a friend for Erica because it makes sense for her to have some friends, especially with all the friends that Barry and Adam have on the show. Then she wasn't on for something like 12 episodes and as mentioned, when she showed up again she was treated as if she was there the whole time. I too was wondering where Matt Bradley was? The best parts of this episode were the scenes with the counselors. Oh and I was dying at Pops' "I walked across Europe as a child" line.
