I know a it should be about love and people being right for each other, but I have to admit my first thought was, "Hang on, Andi!" Mostly to imagine all the seething and envy it would inspire among so many Bachelor Nation wannabes, if this thing got as far as marriage. Think of all the country award show red carpets she'd get to walk, with prime seats as the camera pans to her laughing it up during the Brad and Carrie monologue, engagement publicity, a whole segment on the Atlanta version of Say Yes to the Dress, the wedding pic spread in People Country... Honestly, it's more like the fate I pictured for Emily, before she married that guy.

It was exceptionally poor form, though, and sports hate runs deep. My mom would turn up her nose whenever she saw one of Rick Barry's kids in a game, because of his refusal to play for the ABA Squires on the grounds that he didn't want his children growing up saying "y'all".

The Business: News, Rumours, Analysis, and More
Dejana replied to sdpfeiffy's topic in Everything Else About Movies
Exactly, movies like Divergent and The Maze Runner or even a non-fantasy one-off like The Fault in Our Stars were driven by the tween/teen audience in large part, but there's a big difference between making $125-150 million and the $400+ million that Hunger Games movies have brought in. It's not that you can say the only difference is JLaw, because THG was more popular and the concept itself was very easy to sell to the general public in a way that something like Divergent never was. However, there have also been non-franchise movies from Tom Cruise or Leo or Will Smith that were more about the concept, special effects, the director, or the script, that probably would have succeeded starring someone else. OTOH, I feel that Jennifer's work as Katniss is miles better than what the young leads of Twilight or Harry Potter were ever required to do in those movies. It's not like she has to distance herself from Catching Fire, and play some starving naked junkie in an indie film, to prove she can "really" act. You had multiple critics saying it was a shame about genre bias at the Oscars, because her performance in CF was just as good/better than her supporting turn in American Hustle that year. I think it may be why some give her so much credit for the Hunger Games franchise and didn't necessarily regard the young stars of YA other franchises the same way. -
In absolutely stunning news, there's "no evidence" any theft took place in the case of that stolen 50 Shades book. But seriously, did anyone not think that whole thing was a publicity stunt? If you are going to go with angle that a copy of your highly anticipated book has suspiciously gone missing, at least try to bring the drama.

Jurassic World surpasses the $250 million mark in 5 days. Marvel Studios congratulated JW for claiming the opening weekend record in the grand tradition of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

The Business: News, Rumours, Analysis, and More
Dejana replied to sdpfeiffy's topic in Everything Else About Movies
Not exactly: I think this is kind of a disingenuous argument that ignores how Liam Neeson and Sasha Baron Cohen, for example, had huge hits with more "original" properties before landing those big paychecks. OTOH, Jennifer Lawrence has had box office hits outside of franchises, yet sometimes it feels like there's an eagerness to present a million mitigating factors to her success, to the point where it doesn't really count. I would also challenge the author's contention that it's her gender getting people up in arms about her big pay day, when I think her youth is a big factor as well. Has there been another Hollywood actor who's matched her combination of critical acclaim/box office success/popularity at such a young age since DiCaprio? And there was a big backlash to Leomania for a while, post-Titanic. I remember a lot of guys hating him, saying he looked girly and was overrated, acting-wise. They didn't seem to totally get over it until the mid-2000s and The Departed. Anyway, the movie landscape has changed a lot since the nineties, especially for young hopefuls. If Julia Roberts and JLaw switched birthdates, IMO Julia would be trying out for Twilight and The Hunger Games and Jennifer Lawrence would have been up for Pretty Woman or Sleeping with the Enemy. So, to say that young stars now aren't headlining original properties to $100 million like they used to, so they're not "really" box-office draws, well, how many of them really get the same opportunities? The romantic comedy genre, a major vehicle for female movie stars in the past, is practically comatose in terms of box office (and it's not like those rom-coms went without being criticized for being frivolous or denigrating to women, in their day). When a twentysomething actress leaps at the chance to star in something that isn't just some franchise or a helpless girlfriend role, she gets caught up in a controversy about "stealing" some role that should have gone to someone older but didn't because Hollywood is so ageist, and just wait until she's the one put out to pasture. Instead of constantly questioning why Scarlet Johansson or Jennifer Lawrence always have much older love interests (the latter doesn't, though after seeing multiple Hunger Games movies, maybe putting her with guys her own age isn't the best idea), why not ever wonder if the leading men could stand to be younger? Think of the sort of movie stardom that Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Smith or even Ben Affleck had attained by the age of 30, the types of roles they got to play, and compare it to actors that age today. Shia LaBeouf was there once, but talk about imploding. Now, it's a big deal that they want to get an actual teenager or college aged actor to play Peter Parker, instead of starting off with a guy in his late twenties like Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield. There are a lot of franchises now and not all of them click with the public, especially with the YA genre. People say that anyone could star in a franchise and it wouldn't make a difference, but if you'd switched Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart in The Hunger Games and Twilight, would either have been as successful? I tend to doubt it, though I don't think either would have been an outright flop. There's no way to know, of course, so all we have are wildly differing opinions. I think being a box office draw in today's Hollywood is a combination of the right star with the right material, whether that material is "original" or part of a franchise. -
The final number for Jurassic World comes in at $208.8 million, enough for the new opening weekend record. Box office experts thought Universal was predicting too high of a drop on Sunday and that turned out to be the case. It also has a record for the biggest worldwide OW ever, besting the Deathly Hallows Part 2. How high can JW go? The summer weekdays will give it a huge boost.

Hollywood Nepotism: The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly
Dejana replied to methodwriter85's topic in Everything Else About Movies
Is there really any more nepotism in Hollywood than any other industry? Law firms, restaurants, funeral homes, etc. hire within the family all the time, too, but it just goes under radar in comparison. -
Maybe she thought having a tailor make a perfect replica of an 18th century outfit would arouse too much suspicion (not sure why, if the person is getting paid, what would he/she care)? It was only going to be one outfit and if she was going to put herself through the ordeal of traveling through the stones again, she wasn't going to do it in restrictive undergarments? Because then we'd miss out on the fun of Jamie discovering zippers?

Not necessarily. I think that is a pretty normal range for a couple who aren't preventing pregnancy yet aren't actively trying to have as many kids as possible. With strict NFP it would probably be lower still but higher than 2-3, plus there are miscarriages/fertility issues to consider. I never thought about Derick picking a woman so unlike his mother before but it's really striking. Derick isn't much like Jim Bob but Jill didn't exactly choose him freely. Jill and Derick celebrate their first anniversary in a week: what a year!

Huge weekend for Jurassic World, and the final numbers on Monday may put it above The Avengers' opening weekend ($207.4M) for the record. Jim Bob and Michelle don't strike me as being big on reading novels and The Handmaid's Tale wasn't exactly an endorsement of patriarchy. I think it's far more likely that they just caught a big sale on red fabric at Jo-Ann's.

Here's an article from E! Online about the potential Snapchat spoiler, including a screencap. They also say Shawn isn't just a Ryan Gosling lookalike but equal parts Calvin Harris, heh.

I guess it's up to each state? Most places do ban prostitution but there are certain parts of Nevada where it's legal. The Bunny Ranch is in one of those places and is featured on those Cathouse specials on HBO. Oh dear, I cannot unsee Jessa's resemblance to the Corpse Bride!

Any word on how they will handle the Bree/Roger castings in a way that doesn't spoil anything for the non-book fans? S2 doesn't air until 2016 and in general, and casting news doesn't seem to stay secret very long.

Someone tell Albrecht that it's 2015 and there are millions of thirtysomething millennials now. And yes, it's not only "younger" people who have figured out TV on the internet. I think Starz has dreams of having a reach like HBO's and thinks the only way to make that happen is to build its cable/satellite subscriber base, even as the viewing landscape dramatically shifts. If everyone streams Starz instead, I guess the fear is that the channel won't be in "X millions of houses" the way some other premium channels are, and the big money may still be in that, for the time being.

The US Open has its midpoint around Labor Day weekend to get a big gate from people with extra time off or making a vacation out of it. The Australian Open happens around Australia Day there. Wimbledon and French Open oraganizers couldn't care less about US holidays. The American TV rights aren't funding much of the events, unlike the Olympics.

Well, it was available via OnDemand... Did Sepp think this would turn out like Moneyball but make ten times as much, since soccer, and get nominated for Oscars? Even the cat apartment wasted less money...

After the baby was born, they were in the hospital when the sister was looking at the blonde girl (sorry, can't remember their names) holding the baby and decided to call off the adoption. Double Daddy was there with Psycho Brunette's baby and the four of them took a family photo. Psycho Brunette, meanwhile, uses a break from plea negotiations to take selfies with her lawyer's phone and likes a baby photo Double Daddy has posted on social media.

The Unauthorized Full House Story (Lifetime)
Dejana replied to UYI's topic in Specials, TV Movies & Other One-Offs
That didn't stop Lifetime from making that Saved by the Bell movie last year. Maybe they'll try to throw in set visits from Kirk Cameron and Alanis to spice things up. -
For years, players have complained that Roland Garros and Wimbledon were too close together; maybe the tournament organizers finally relented.

Go Stan! I really don't understand his outfit, either. Maybe his kid picked it out? Guga! This runner-up ovation for Djokovic is probably more love than the crowd showed when Rafa won the last few times.
