  1. I just finished Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik. Delightful. Loved it. Now I'm in that state where everything else I'm picking up pales in comparison. Which is a problem because I need a book (or three) to read on this vacation!
  2. I've never read Eat, Pray, Love. It does sound bad (and the new one, City of Girls, doesn't sound that appealing). But I loved, loved The Signature of All Things. I'm pretty shocked about that.
  3. Oh yes, Arrival is a superb example of a wildly different movie but still great in its own way.
  4. Love this topic. Had always thought about starting a similar one: "which was better, the movie or the book?" The problem was, I couldn't find that many examples where the book was demonstrably better (!!), and didn't want to lose my library cred. Like Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. I LOVED the book. I LOVED the movie too, even though it wasn't quite the same. Sometimes I like the movie better because it's less of a time commitment.
  5. That, and the fact that Cyril is always in the right place at the right time in ways that just happen to advance the story (excepting maybe Central Park). Nelson's column, NYC during the 80s, Maude's books (and their royalties!), the referendum at the end.
  6. It was good. Just a little toooooo long and Forest Gumpy.
  7. I wonder if TPTB will create tribes based on any pre-existing friendships or if they'll just toss the dice.
  8. Who's in, and who's not? Borneo, Richard Hatch (Scum) Australian Outback, Tina Wesson (She's 58, or had enough?) Africa, Ethan Zohn (meh) Marquesas, Vecepia Towery (Too bad, but she's smart.) Thailand, Brian Heidik (Scum) Amazon, Jenna Morasca Pearl Islands, Sandra Diaz-Twine All-Stars, Amber Brkich (Wow, big get. Huge target on her back, because of Rob.) Vanuatu, Chris Daugherty (Would have preferred Chris over Tony.) Palau, Tom Westman (He's 55.) Guatemala, Danni Boatwright Panama, Aras Baskauskas (Already tried in Season 27.) Cook Islands, Yul Kwon (WOW) Fiji, Earl Cole (Too bad. Would have preferred Earl over Adam.) China, Todd Herzog (In rehab.) Micronesia, Parvati Shallow Gabon, Bob Crowley Tocantins, J.T. (Haha!) Samoa, Natalie White HvV, Sandra Diaz-Twine Nicaragua, Fabio Birza Redemption Island, Rob Mariano (I love Rob, but four was enough. He and Amber will have to scramble! And now I understand why he's so puffy in the Island of the Idols previews.) South Pacific, Sophie Clarke One World, Kim Spradlin (YES!) Philippines, Denise Stapley (48, oldest returnee. Hope she's still as fit.) Caramoan, John Cochran (Thank god.) BvW, Tyson Apostol Cagayan, Tony Vlachos (Would have preferred Chris.) San Juan del Sur, Natalie Anderson (Badass. Back with Jeremy!) Worlds Apart, Mike Holloway (Whew.) Cambodia, Jeremy Collins Kaôh Rōng, Michele Fitzgerald MvGx, Adam Klein (Would have preferred Earl.) Game Changers, Sarah Lacina HvHvH, Ben Driebergen (Fuck.) GI, Wendell Holland (Why not Dominick, too?) DvG, Nick Wilson EoE, Chris Underwood* (Yes, an asterisk.)
  9. I find this list very useful, as-is, and wouldn’t ask you to do even more work on it.
  10. So if Player A comes to Rob and says, "I have an alliance with B, C, D, and E, but E is on the bottom," and then next week, Player E comes to Rob and says, "I feel like I'm on the bottom of my alliance with A, B, C, D." What Would Rob Do??
  11. The ultimate blindside: An oral history of the greatest Survivor moment ever: instapapering this for bedtime reading! (The Erik handing over his immunity idol to Natalie the Jugular, of course.)
  12. I've heard there will be two chances for a player to win their way back into the game – at the merge and then around Day 35/36.
  13. So we would see a Nashville Handshake?
  14. I'm so used to Survivor boot lists being total bullshit. Begging everyone's pardon, how certain are we that @ApprenticeFan's final list is right? 'Cause I really want Colin and Christie to win. That would be awesome.
  15. Someone said, I think it was @KimberStormer (?), that returnees often take on the attributes of the winner of their original season. For Joe, that was Mike Holloway. How did he win? A string of immunities. It worked for that guy, Joe probably reasoned it could work for him too.
  16. He says that every week. If every single tribal is epic, none of them are.
  17. Yes. Even my beloved, Anne Tyler, I limit myself to two books a year. (I've still got a ways to get through her backlist.)
  18. That makes us ALL Windy.
  19. I'm not ready for Survivor to be cancelled (egads!), but I definitely am spoiled by being able to watch every past season episode on demand. This waiting for a whole &$^#*@! week is for the birds and significantly reduces my enjoyment of the current season.
  20. There are lots of other, more enjoyable mountains to climb. I feel bad about your rule of "no other books while reading this one." I picked up Middlemarch and gave up 75 pages in. Just fuck it. Am reading Lucky Boy and Robin (Williams) right now.
  21. You're 100% right! I went from paying CBS, to Amazon Prime, and now Hulu. I haven't been watching TAR, but I do watch Survivor on Hulu, and the captions are present.
  22. We have like (with a love heart), sad, surprised, laugh, and useful. I like the options, but am always thrown by the heart. I don't LOVE a post, usually, but I do like it. Giving it a heart seems wrong. Is it possible to add another icon? A smile, maybe, for like? Change the heart to love (for those posts that are super good).
