I would be sitting on my couch watching the second part of the two-part Flash/Arrow crossover event that airs tomorrow night on The CW from 8 to 9. Sure if you live on the East Coast, you’re in the clear (but probably very tired). But if you’re a West Coast-er, and you have to see the trailer right away (and for the sake of tonight’s post I hope you are all going to click on my relatively thoughtful trailer post as soon as it drops), you face something of a nerd Sophie’s Choice. Do you stop watching the final half of Arrow and patiently wait for the Batman v Superman trailer to drop before resuming the show or do you wait until Arrow is over and either hope that the trailer doesn’t drop until around 9:15 pm or merely wait to see the thing until the show ends? ... The child writes down on a piece of paper what he or she is worrying about, puts it into the Worry Eater's mouth and zips it up. The parent comes by later, takes it out and reads is, and helps the child deal with the anxiety. The person I want to get it for suggested that the parent read it in the child's presence so they can talk about it together, which seems an even better idea.. ------------- Laura Hurley @lah9891 4h4 hours ago So, the two things I said I wanted to change: Barry using "Ollie," and Oliver lying to Felicity Link to comment

I've got mixed feelings about that plot. On the one hand, this was some of the best dramatic work that both Stephen Amell and Emily Bett Rickards have done on the show to date. On the other, William's mother insisting that Oliver keep the relationship a secret from everyone just felt like a contrivance to give us that exact kind of fight. Keeping secrets on these shows never works out well for everyone, yet the characters either choose to keep doing it or are forced into doing it by the plot, and the whole thing made me roll my eyes even as the two leads were killing it opposite each other.* * *Overall, the story was fun, but both shows are individually suffering from too many characters and storylines right now, and crossovers that not only feature both casts, but major guest stars who need a build-up before they become part of a third show only exacerbates that issue. 6 Link to comment

They're acting like these "brutal consequences" are some sort of new thing they've invented. "Oh my gosh, Oliver lied! Whatever will happen when Felicity finds out?! Let me tell you - it will be brutal! Are you surprised?! Are you intrigued to find out what these consequences will be?! Who would have ever thought that lying would have consequences! We knew this would throw you because we didn't provide any consequences for another character who lied her ass off earlier this season!" No one ever learns on Arrow. That way the writers can continue to be lazy and not have to think of honest ways to provide tension to the narrative. 11 Link to comment
tv echo December 3, 2015 Share December 3, 2015 From Robert Dougherty's review (see TheMovieNetwork link above)... So when Felicity states to Oliver that "You don't trust me. You never will," in spite of everything, this is pretty much the writers' coded message to the audience as well. They don't trust us to keep watching without jerking us around, without creating drama that does not need to exist, without setting up plots and entire spinoff shows that really have no need to exist, and without creating paranoia that a show with true courage and guts doesn't need to keep feeding us. They certainly don't trust that we will actuallly watch a show with high drama which also has two characters working through all of it together as equal partners, no matter what, for more than a few episodes. He owes her a lot more than he owes Sandra, and it’s not like Felicity’s the Jerry Springer I’m-gonna-rip-your-weave-out kind of girl who would tell Sandra she knows. But, no. He plans to keep regular visits to Central City a secret from a super-science, I-have-access-to-every-surveillance-camera-in-the-state kind of girl. The conversation between the two is heated, and a rarity. We’ve been treated to so much positive Olicity this season that this scene almost felt as if it took place in an alternate reality.* * *But at what cost? Now we’re back to Felicity’s not knowing about Oliver’s son, and it looks as if Oliver will honor the mother of the child’s request to keep Oliver’s paternity a secret. tv echo December 3, 2015 Share December 3, 2015 (edited) The reincarnated Hawks and immortal villain aren’t even the craziest thing on this Arrow/Flash team-upBy Alasdair Wilkins Dec 2, 2015 8:00 PMhttp://www.avclub.com/tvclub/reincarnated-hawks-and-immortal-villain-arent-even-229221 That the crux of this is Oliver’s long-lost son—and one not even named Connor!—is … well, it’s a bit weird, honestly, just as it was weird to see Moira Queen in the “Previously On” segment of last night’s Flash episode. A previously unknown child is one of the most soap opera plots Arrow could conceivably trot out, and the fact that this particular plotline has been sitting on the shelf for two years does it no favors. As I discussed back in the review of “Seeing Red,” that particular subplot never felt like it had all that much to do with Oliver, given his younger self was ignorant about all that was happening, nor did it really establish the mother of Oliver’s child as anything more than a character-building device to help wrap up Moira’s arc. The whole business with Oliver’s child mattered to the show inasmuch as it illustrated Moira’s twisted mix of love and ruthlessness. That’s fine in and of itself, but it means “Legends Of Yesterday” has trouble knowing quite how to grab hold of the story tonight; in particular, Anna Hopkins’ Samantha doesn’t come off particularly sympathetic, because the audience has no context for her that might elicit sympathy. She’s just this person we might vaguely remember from a year ago who ends up making a demand of Oliver that doesn’t seem especially logical in and of itself—how exactly would she expect Oliver to successfully keep a secret of this life-changing magnitude from the woman he loves?—and just feels like a plot-mandated way to drive a wedge between Oliver and Felicity, whether tonight in the first timeline or sometime later, as is now pretty much inevitable. Indeed, Felicity’s breakup with Oliver in the first timeline isn’t wrong, exactly, but Oliver’s also kind of right when he says this has all come out of nowhere, so it’s again difficult for the audience to fully invest in the characters’ sudden, drastic decisions. But those people have their work cut out for them because, currently, Oliver is sabotaging his happiness and it is So. Hard. To. Watch. Was anyone else throwing things at their TV screens during this sequence? Oliver hanging out with his son was adorable and I never want it to stop, but you know this is going to end bad for Olicity. There is such an easy solution in this situation: Oliver should just tell Felicity and lie to Samantha about it. (Am I exposing my own moral failings here?) Or go with the slightly more difficult, and infinitely more mature option of talking this out with Samantha further. But, no, instead he tells Felicity that there is nothing to worry about. That they are back in Star City and it is over now. Even after she gives him a speech about how she wants to be a good teammate! Even as she hugs his weary, conflicted head! You can see it in his face: he wants to tell her. But that’s not how Oliver works. He thinks the truth is complicated — and sometimes it is. But lies always end up being far more complicated in the long run. Oliver should know that by now. Worst. Teammate. Ever. (But also some pretty great angst. ) Link to comment
tv echo December 3, 2015 Share December 3, 2015 Arrow "Legends of Yesterday" Review: Such an Easy (and Fun) Game to PlayBy Noel Kirkpatrick 14 hours agohttp://www.tv.com/shows/arrow/community/post/arrow-season-4-episode-8-legends-of-yesterday-review-144873472971/ Oh, some of you are still here. Okay! I've been sort of hoping that this plot would have just been dropped into an abyss since it hadn't been mentioned since last season's crossover, but no such luck. And I get why it hasn't: they spent a sizable amount of time in a Season 2 flashback setting this up and then only dropped a reminder that they hadn't forgotten about it in the crossover; they're invested by this point. While I have very little interest in watching this, a bit of me also admires the sheer restraint the show has exercised in pulling on this particular thread. As Carrie Raisler from the AV Club noted on Twitter when Oliver saw Samantha and William, this has been some soap opera-level slow playing on Arrow's part. And they are doing it at the best possible time, albeit in the most Arrow-y (read: worst) way possible. Oliver and Felicity are good as a couple, as the new timeline Barry created demonstrated, but as the older timeline Barry wiped away showed, Felicity is still hella (and rightfully) insecure about Oliver keeping secrets. This is a way better rationale for a conflict between them than what we got when she found out Ray was still alive, and it's a way more compelling one. It's just in traditional Arrow fashion, Oliver's keeping his damn mouth shut when he should be calmly and maturely explaining this stuff to Felicity, regardless of what Samantha is saying. Yes, I know, I'm advocating for lying to one woman so Oliver can tell the truth to another, but that's how wildly messed up this storyline already is. And it makes my head really hurt. 3 Link to comment

Essentially we are just delaying the big Felicity break up scene then because that is all something we want to see... Link to comment
