Vee is for Villain.

Toussaint has a really magnetic presence, which is why she's so well cast in the role of Vee. I think she's really lovely, and I was stunned to learn that she was born in 1960.

Give Lorraine Toussaint an Emmy!

I love Toussaint, but for her to receive (or even be nominated for) an Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Comedy would be really weird. Maybe if they don't get many nominations this year they'll change categories to drama next year.

Anyway, I'm not that bothered about her winning awards; I just hope she gets some more high-profile work out of it, like Corey Stoll has out of House of Cards.

Such a great character, and a terrible person. She was believable as nurturing (dinner scene), and as a menace.

She might as well have pulled the trigger herself on RJ.

Just finished watching all 13 episodes in 24 hours. Looking forward to the rewatch!

I don't think there really was any sort of transition as she was introduced as a straight up villian.  Her first scene she's at an adoption fair doing drug deals and totally grooming a kid.

What I meant was, I think in the beginning, her depiction was more subtle, even in the grooming situations. She morphed too quickly into out and out comic book villain behavior.

I'm not so sure about that.  It might be a difference of opinion in how one views grooming behavior.  For me, it's one of the ultimate villain behaviors, especially when it's grooming of children.  In Looks Blue, Tastes Red, her entire depiction seemed to be that of a textbook psychopath.  I probably read more about pyschopathy than is healthy (personal academic interest) which might be why, for me, her character felt like this horrible evil villain from the very start.  I was most curious with how the other prisoners would deal with her after she arrived because people like Vee really are bad seeds who could potentially ruin the garden if not removed.

While I do kind of wish her backstory actually went into her backstory instead of adding a twist to Taystee's backstory, I did not mind not seeing her childhood.

Edited to add: Now that I think of it, a lot of people in other people's backstories never got explanations for their being bad. Both the gangster and the robber in Watson's backstory. That Cesar guy in Daya's backstory. Gloria's abusive man. The Russian gangsters and their stuck-up wives. Miss Rosa's partners in crime. The abusive man who got Claudetted. Even Mendez and his lonely man problems did not really explain his behavior, let alone justify it. Perhaps Vee could have used a fuller backstory to explain why she was so bad, but she didn't. She just happened to be another one of those bad people; the main difference was that she got sent to this prison.

One thing that struck me: I can't see how Vee could have been so dominant at a time when Miss Claudette was also in the prison.  She seems like she never would have tolerated Vee's shit.

There's a great interview with Toussaint in Vulture about her experience playing Vee. My favorite bit was learning that Toussaint and Kate Mulgrew (Red) are actually longtime friends in real life, but haven't spoken in about a decade (not intentionally, just life sort of got in the way). Reading that made me like Vee and Red's meeting scene even more - they too hadn't spoken in a while, heh.

Ooh, a Miss Claudette vs. Vee flashback would be fantastic.

I still have 3 episodes to go (for which I've been mildly spoiled) so I can't say my thoughts on whether she gets more mustache-twisty, but from what I've seen, I've been completely blown away by Lorraine Toussaint's performance this season. The smooth combination of nurturing and menacing cannot be easy for an actor to pull off convincingly, and she has nailed it.

Miss Claudette may not have been there the last time Vee was inside.  I know Miss C would have been in prison, but possibly in maximum security since she had a longer sentence to serve.

I despise her as a character, but I'll give Toussaint one thing: she is scarily good at playing that kind of character. Also, the RJ/Vee thing had me foaming at the mouth. Ugh.

I thought about that too, but it didn't look like Vee controlled all the black inmates, just a few.  So it wasn't be required that Ms. C and Vee would have to interact.  It didn't look like Ms. C interacted all that much with the other black inmates, she used her 'influence' as it were, to boot Janae out of the cubicle.  So just because Ms. C may not have taken V's shit, didn't mean that they would really be at odds.  I could easily see Ms. C just telling the other girls that V's no good, but they could do what they want.  Unless there was something that V needed from Ms. C, or Ms. C tried to interfere, she may have just left her alone.

I agree with @Hanahope. Also psychos like Vee know how to read people. It's how they're able to get away with manipulations and crimes undetected for great lengths of time. Vee probably knew not to mess with Miss Claudette. One thing I saw Miss Claudette had (Red also) that Vee didn't seem to try was get in good with the guards. You definitely want to be respected by the other inmates for survival. Having the guards give you respect will only up your status. Until you choke one out...

She was great as Vee the character, but there wasn't a need for Vee's character.

If there had been leader rivalry before Vee arrived and her group of followers had just recently lost their leader and were searching, then yes, she would have fit right in. It just didn't seem real the way most of the women just started to follow her every command so quickly when only Red and Taystee knew who she was.

That wasn't the case though, for the most part everyone in that group got along and didn't have a need for tensions. Red was the only leader I really saw be aggressive and that was only because Pornstatche was moving his stuff through her kitchen, and also because she really is a mother figure to a lot of the women in there.

Vee is evil, only out for her own good and will let anyone take the fall for her.

I'm so happy she's coming back for another season. I would like to see her back story. Although, I hope it's a new storyline. I didn't like the division in the prison. Vee could be an outsider, just as Red was the first half of season 2.
