tv echo July 27, 2019 Share July 27, 2019 (edited) Another Reborning review... When Artists Recreate Lost Children for Mourning Mothers Angelica Frey July 25, 2019https://hyperallergic.com/511033/reborning-soho-playhouse/ Quote And while Reborning does touch on these implications with perhaps an overly dramatic, almost 1990s-network-television-after-school-special flair, where it really shines is in its quite accurate representation of what it means to be an artist in the 21st century. Kelly and Daizy, both RISD-educated sculptors, are not creating work based on their thorough education, but, in order to make a living, adapting their skills to market demands. While Kelly crafts reborn dolls for clients ranging from grieving parents, to empty nesters to upcoming retirees about to receive a “fun” gift, Daizy, aside from working as a teacher’s assistant, sculpts hyper-realistic dildos. The play also delves into the all-consuming nature of an art practice. While what Kelly and Daizy do just seems like a trade, a kind of day job, at one point Kelly — eager to meet the expectations of the very demanding Emily — lets her practice progressively consume all areas of her life, neglecting eat, sleep, and personal hygiene. She becomes fixated on making the doll’s eyes more life-like, and this becomes a Sisyphean task that makes her makes her engage in behaviors that are usually ascribed to the “tortured artist” cliché, going all the way to completely identifying herself with her works, that is, lose her sanity. Thankfully, Dohrn’s writing and Rickards acting avoid glamorizing this spiral, and instead focus on the trauma Kelly has been carrying her whole life, thus making her struggles about her art and life believable and concrete, instead of lofty and somehow romantic. * * * In the span of 90 minutes, Reborning explores the meaning of art, grief, and trauma, both personal and inter-generational, all through the lens of reborn dolls. It could have been overkill, but it’s a pleasantly disquieting ride, devoid — thank God — of gratuitous, doll-themed horror visuals. Edited July 27, 2019 by tv echo 2 Link to comment

The son of Polish immigrants, he’s aged out of his ’60s-era radicalism and into something much more emotionally stunted and defeatist. He’s missing work, forgetting to do basic things like ordering coffee and supplies, and he barely reacts when his shop is broken into and vandalized. But everything changes when Franco Wicks (Chris Francisque), a young African-American man, answers Arthur’s “Help wanted” sign. Franco is 21 years old, hilarious and opinionated, lively and hopeful. As the two men slowly bond, they tackle everything from racism to relationships, but both are burdened by legacies their fathers left behind. Superior Donuts could also be called Toxic Masculinity Is Destroying Men and Ruining the World, but I get why playwright Tracy Letts went with the shorter, if less satisfying, title. * * * Letts is, obviously, a gifted writer. He has a Pulitzer Prize for his 2007 play August: Osage County. There are some wonderful lines throughout Superior Donuts, but Letts doesn’t push or interrogate his characters’ motivations as deeply as he could, and the play’s violent but tidy resolution is deeply dissatisfying. Thankfully, this production has two lead actors who turn in brilliant performances. Nykl and Francisque flawlessly elevate the material, drawing out every laugh and every nuance of their characters’ emotionally complex pas de deux. They almost make Superior Donuts live up to its name. Edited July 27, 2019 by tv echo 3 Link to comment

Reborning By Dan Rubins July 11, 2019http://www.curtainup.com/reborning19.html Quote Though Rickards' limber performance balances Kelly's caustic wit and ever-encroaching despair, Dohrn lets his protagonist's self-description as a "basket case" explain away her abrupt character development. That feels a bit like a cop-out. Kelly's sudden spiraling catapults the play towards familiar melodrama and away from the specific idiosyncrasies of the earliest scenes. Review: REBORNING (seen July 11, 2019) Samuel L. Leiter July 12, 2019https://slleiter.blogspot.com/2019/07/41-2019-2020-review-reborning-seen-july.html Quote As played by Emily Bett Rickards, she’s attractive in a funky, tank top-wearing, dyed red hair, tattooed kind of way. She may have been in rehab but she still drinks heavily, smokes weed, and pops pills, struggling to handle whatever demons may be disturbing her. Those demons lately have cooled her sexual heat with Daizy (Paul Piaskowski), the boyfriend in whose loft she lives and sculpts. * * * Anyway, I’m taking this flatly written, flatly acted (aside from the spunky Rickards, of TV’s “Arrow”), and flatly directed (by the actress playing Emily) play too seriously. Very little about the production other than its reborning premise is distinctive. That includes Peter Triolo’s so-so setting, with its upstage wall including an elevator fronted by a metal, cross-hatched gate. Reborning Christopher Caz, Critic July 16, 2019http://www.theaterscene.net/plays/offbway-plays/reborning/christopher-caz/ Quote Kelly is a troubled young woman; she struggles with having been callously injured as a baby and abandoned in a dumpster. Richards [sic] plays the role as earnestly as any actor could. Her character is so busy consuming large quantities of alcohol, smoking pot, popping pills, throwing fits and exhibiting other signs of emotional illness that any acting finesse goes unnoticed. The audience feels as alienated by her as the other characters do, which, in the end, results in a prevailing sentiment of pity, albeit from a distance. * * * All three of the actors have moments in their performances which appear less than organic, but it is most often when they’re written to say or do things which just don’t ring true. * * * There is a prevailing sense that the script tries to cover too much intellectual ground on the topic of reborning in too short a time frame, placing a burden on the characters to experience more than would seem realistic in an ordinary world. Nevertheless, through the efforts of the actors and valiant direction by Triolo, this dark play does succeed in bringing to light some of the complexities of motherhood, child loss and abandonment through the very unique reborning lens. Check it out for yourself. Edited July 29, 2019 by tv echo 1 Link to comment

TVLine has learned that Law will play Quinn Liu, a former Staff Sergeant with Army CID who was recently demoted for insubordination. After an explosive collision with Five-0 during a case involving veterans, Quinn becomes a loyal ally to the team. Sharp-tongued in several languages, she has a deep understanding of military culture, a mysterious past and a deft ability to match wits with McGarrett (played by Alex O’Loughlin). * * * “We are thrilled to have Katrina join the [cast],” says showrunner Peter M. Lenkov. “She dazzles as Quinn, the team’s newest recruit, and viewers are going to love seeing how she first encounters McGarrett and Danny (played by Scott Caan). If you know the show well, you’ll be feeling some déjà vu.” In addition to years of intermittent appearances as Arrow‘s Nyssa al’Ghul — whom she last played in a March flash-forward episode — Law’s previous TV credits include The Oath, Sacred Lies, Training Day, Legend of the Seeker and Spartacus. tv echo August 19, 2019 Share August 19, 2019 (edited) "He has the mind of an artist in the body of a warrior"... 'Arrow’ Star Stephen Amell To Headline Starz Wrestling Drama Series ‘Heels’ By Nellie Andreeva August 19, 2019https://deadline.com/2019/08/stephen-amell-star-heels-wrestling-drama-starz-picked-up-series-order-mike-omalley-1202670994/ Quote Amell has signed on to topline Heels, an hourlong drama set in the outrageous world of independent professional wrestling, which had been eying an eight-episode series pickup at Starz. With him on board, the project has received a series greenlight and an eight-episode order. Written by Michael Waldron (Loki), with Mike O’Malley set as showrunner, Heels is about the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals — one of them played by Amell — war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel (Amell). But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind. In the ring, Amell’s Jack Spade is the charismatic villain, or heel, of the Duffy Wrestling Association (DWA). In the real world, he’s its hard-working owner, a husband and father trying to make ends meet while fighting to realize his impossible dreams. He has the mind of an artist in the body of a warrior, and a Steve Jobs-ian need for perfection — and for control. He says he’ll do whatever it takes to build the DWA into an empire. Will he go so far as to risk his marriage, or his relationship with his brother? Heels was set up at Starz by Paramount Television in early 2017 and was quickly put on fast track for an eight-episode series pickup. Starz later became the lead studio, with Lionsgate TV eventually laking over as part of the recent integration of Starz and Lionsgate’s TV production operations. Heels is produced by Lionsgate TV in association with Paramount TV. Along with Waldron and O’Malley, LBI Entertainment’s Julie Yorn, Chris Donnelly and Patrick Walmsley will also serve as executive producers. Edited August 19, 2019 by tv echo 1 1 Link to comment

Featherhat August 19, 2019 Share August 19, 2019 Definitely within his wheelhouse for interest personally (for him) and inline with moving on from Arrow but staying where his fans might follow him. Starz can be a mixed bag quality wise but this is interesting. Before Glow I wouldn't have thought a wrestling TV show would be something I would watch, even for actors I like but I will check this out. I'm not surprised he didn't go back to trying to break in to movies (or at least try longer) since it's been a mixed bag of success (very mixed) and this is something his name could get greenlit and is only 8 episodes as opposed to 22-24. And I guess it's a strike whilst the iron and interest is hot thing. 1 Link to comment

tv echo August 23, 2019 Share August 23, 2019 (edited) Like 'GLOW'? Then Get Excited for 'Heels' Kieran Fisher August 21, 2019https://filmschoolrejects.com/glow-and-heels/ Quote Heels will explore the more interesting side of pro wrestling. Forget about the big leagues, forget about Dwayne Johnson. The independent scene rarely receives any mainstream attention, but it’s where some of the best real-life wrestling stories are forged. It’s populated with performers like the character Jack Spade who are willing to sacrifice everything to make their dreams come true.* * *Heels sounds more like The Wrestler, though, albeit more optimistic. Jack Spade is just like the thousands of indie wrestlers out there who haven’t given up hope of making it to the top someday, as opposed to a washed-up veteran who’s forced to take bumps just to make enough bucks to scrape by. That’s a whole other side of the profession that deserves a series in its own right. Interestingly, Amell also invited Cody Rhodes to work with him on the series. He accepted. In case you don’t know, Rhodes is a professional wrestler who became friends with the actor after appearing in Arrow as a guest star. On top of that, he also introduced Amell to the world of pro wrestling by competing against him in a tag team match at WWE’s Summerslam 2015 pay-per-view event. Since then, Amell has continued to make some in-ring appearances here and there. He was a part of 2018’s historic All In event, a massive indie show — spearheaded by Rhodes and a group of wrestlers known as The Elite — that marked the spiritual birth of All Elite Wrestling, a new mainstream company whose weekly show is debuting on TNT this fall. Rhodes has said that Amell is welcome to join the promotion any time. What makes Rhodes’ involvement particularly interesting, however, is the fact the plot sort of mirrors his own wrestling journey. He’s the son of the legendary Dusty Rhodes and the younger brother of Dustin Rhodes, whose Goldust character is one of the most unique personalities to ever don some spandex. When he became a wrestler, he had two huge familial shadows to step out from behind. Rhodes and his brother are close, but in the past, there’s been some rivalry between the pair in regards to their own father’s legacy. Recently, the duo squared off at AEW’s inaugural Double or Nothing pay-per-view event and the meat of their storyline revolved around a sibling rivalry that mined inspiration from reality.* * * Rhodes’ part in the show remains to be seen. Maybe he’ll just show up to act, as he’s rather good at that as well. But at least the show is bringing in people who understand the business, and with Amell on board, Heels has a lead star who’s an experienced grappler. Expect the actual wrestling in this show to be the real deal. That said, non-wrestling fans should give Heels a chance when it arrives on Starz. Regardless of your thoughts on the sport itself as a form of entertainment, the stories of the people who dedicate their lives to it are often compelling. GLOW has already proven this, and with the talent involved in Heels, the show has the potential to be just as good as the Netflix drama. Edited August 23, 2019 by tv echo 1 Link to comment

In the series, both Bennett and Carpenter play characters who sound like they're, if not villains, at least villain-adjacent. That, of course, i snot a terrible idea, since casting familiar faces and beloved character actors in villainous roles gives the audience a built-in sense of empathy for the bad guy that can make them feel more complex and sympathetic with relatively little screen time given to their actual abckstories. You can check out the series trailer above and their official character descriptions below. According to The CW, Manu Bennett will play Leone Vokk, an intergalactic bounty hunter sent by the malevolent Parallax Corporation to capture Jax (Priscilla Quintana) and gain the secret of portal technology. tv echo September 15, 2019 Share September 15, 2019 (edited) Arrow Vet Joins NCIS: Los Angeles Season 11 With A Signature F-Bomb Gina Cardone Sep. 13, 2019https://www.cinemablend.com/television/2480217/arrow-vet-vinnie-jones-joins-ncis-los-angeles-season-11-signature-f-bomb Quote Yes, an Arrow vet -- who was also in one episode of MacGyver, several episodes of Galavant, and a ton of badass action movies -- is coming to NCIS: Los Angeles Season 11 on CBS. And, true to form, Vinnie Jones has already told one of NCIS: LA's main stars to "fuck off." British former footballer Vinnie Jones is known from films like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels; Snatch; and X-Men: The Last Stand, but he also played Danny "Brick" Brickwell across nine episodes of The CW's Arrow from 2015 to 2018.* * * Daniela Ruah (Kensi Blye) just showed off an Instagram post with two of the 2019-2020 season's new guest stars, Steve Valentine and Vinnie Jones. The first photo with Valentine is innocent enough, but slide over to her video with Jones to hear him reply "Fuck off" to her "Hey Vinnie" shout-out. She obviously wasn't offended, as you can hear from her delighted cackle: Edited September 15, 2019 by tv echo Link to comment

tv echo September 17, 2019 Share September 17, 2019 (edited) Alexander Ludwig is a 27-year-old Canadian actor (he's 6'2") - you may remember him from Vikings and The Hunger Games... Alexander Ludwig To Star Opposite Stephen Amell In Starz’s Wrestling Drama Series ‘Heels’ By Nellie Andreeva September 16, 2019 https://deadline.com/2019/09/alexander-ludwig-cast-star-co-leadstarz-stephen-amell-wrestling-drama-series-heels-1202736137/ Quote EXCLUSIVE: Alexander Ludwig (Vikings, The Hunger Games) is set as the co-lead opposite Stephen Amell in Heels, Starz’s eight-episode hourlong drama set in the outrageous world of independent professional wrestling. Written by Michael Waldron, with Mike O’Malley as showrunner, Heels is about the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals, Jack (Amell) and Ace (Ludwig) Spade, war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy (Ludwig) and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel (Amell). But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind. In the ring, Ludwig’s Ace Spade is the beloved hero and star of the DWA. Things are more difficult in the real world, where he struggles to reconcile his town idol status with his insecurities and demons. He’s brash, cocky and self-destructive — yet so damn charming and good-looking that you can almost forgive him. If he can keep it together, he’ll have a ticket out of Duffy and to the big time. But that’s a big if. Edited September 17, 2019 by tv echo Link to comment
