Me and a fellow fan have been tearing apart the lazy-ish writing decisions that were made in the original latter half seasons and coming up with alternatives, especially with Becky and Mark's characterization like four pages of messages of rewriting the latter seasons. we also thought that they would elevate Darlene and David so much at times in the show. That every other couple would be brought down in some way just so Darlene and David can seem  like the most stable one.

Before the 180 on their personality switch it seemed like a pretty stable plan that Becky and Mark had with Mark's union job and the plan with Becky's schooling. But once they came back they are basically pigeon holed as the unsuccessful ones even though they made it out of lanford the town that everyone wants to leave and get the hell out of apparently.

The community college thing confuses if I remember, during a couple of scenes in season 6 or 7 Becky would be seen with a book, like what was she studying for, was she taking a class, was she studying for her GED.

In truth, David actually ended up derailing Darlene (abandoning his family with no support) than Mark ever derailed Becky.

Roseanne always had a soft spot for David but he was really the more toxic brother.

After she was injured in the line of duty, the PD offered her a nice, cushy desk job with full benefits but she threw it away because, dammit she wanted to be a cop. Another stupid career limiting decision.

(From an episode thread)

I don't think that was stupid at all.  She had no dependents and adequate savings for a single person living cheaply, so she was in a position to be able to walk away from an unfulfilling job and try new ones, even if it took her a while to hit on the next thing she wanted to really pursue.  And she'd have been miserable in that job; it's not only that she's not suited for a desk job, it's that desk job in particular -- she'd spend all her time hearing and reading about her buddy officers doing the things she used to do, and desperately still wanted to be doing, herself.

Was it a permanent desk job or just until she was able to go back to her other duties?

By her phrasing, permanent (or at least indefinite; not anything like "for six months until you completely heal and then we'll reevaluate"), which didn't make a whole lot of sense based on how they described her injury, but that's what they gave us - that she'd be stuck sitting there typing.

If she could 't be a cop how could she drive long haul?

Different set of physical requirements, a city agency having more liability rules than a private company, the fact this is a sitcom and no one paid attention to medical realities from the beginning - take your pick.

I thought that story arc was strange because Jackie didn't seem all that interested in actually doing the work of being a cop; she just liked saying she was one. There was that time she completely ignored the two guys fighting in the Lobo until her partner came in and then she acted like she was on top of the situation. IRL, I suspect Jackie would have taken the desk job just so she could keep telling everyone she was a cop, but they needed to make the Gary breakup look more dramatic I guess. (And my unpopular opinion is that she was right to dump Gary -- or let him dump her, depending on how you look at it. It was the first time she showed any backbone in that relationship, and him giving her an ultimatum about what he would allow her to do for a living was a pretty big bag of bullshit.)

Semi-related (not really): Last night I saw the DJ steals the car episode, which had the great COPS takeoff over the end credits.

Dan dropping the pizza and running! 🤣

But why oh why, did it have to be Gary? There were others who I would rather she kicked to the curb. Booker for one. As much as I love George Clooney, he totally took her for granted and she acted coy about it instead of acting like a grown woman. I won't include Fisher, even though he was a monster because those kinds of "relationships" are not what I would consider a part of her love life.

I don't know, I thought she was more subservient with Gary than with Booker, but Gary did seem to genuinely love her or at least the version of her that she let him see. Honestly I think her best guy was boring Fred; it's just that they were completely wrong for each other. It's too bad the reboot has written him out of existence. It would have been interesting to see them as friends now and see what each of their relationships with a grown Andy are like.

Yes that's true, at first. But then they had a heart to heart and she revealed that she'd been acting phony around him and he basically told her to just be herself and then after that she was.

I have no idea how far in advance they planned the abuse storyline, but her relationship with Gary shows how she is a prime target for an abuser.  There are a lot of similarities to the relationship with Fisher in her deference to Gary's interests and desires, and if he'd chosen to isolate her the way Fisher did he could have.

Because Gary is a good man (other than that whole throwing down an ultimatum thing, which doesn't even make him bad, just not right for her, and good on Jackie for breaking up with a man she loves and who everyone tells her is the greatest guy she'll ever find because she knows he's not right for her), when he finds out she's hiding her true self in order to please him, he wants her to knock it off.  Fisher, on the other hand, took her feeling like she wasn't good enough for him and ran with it.

I watched "Roseanne" in the early days but gave it up several years before the end of the show's first run. I didn't watch the reboot because of Roseanne's politics, but I gave "The Conners" a chance for a season or so.

I gave it up because I don't find poverty porn funny (plus, the relationship between Ben and Darlene was just so unbelievable). The Conners are losers who continuously make the wrong decisions.

I'm quoting myself here, because I was thinking about the Conners and contrasting them with the Evanses from "Good Times." The Evans family was poor and lived in the projects, but they never seemed to stop striving for a better life. The Conners just seem to accept their lot in life and don't want to do anything to change it.

It’s not that the Connors accept their life. It’s that they dream without research or accept delayed gratification.

The Evans win several thousand in the lottery and dreamed about cars, jewels, and furs, but ultimately put it away for college. The Connors get severance pay and instead of wiping out their debt, they blew it all on a Disney vacation.

willing to leave Mark behind

Why shouldn't she have been willing to leave him behind if he didn't want to come with her?  She wanted to continue her life with Mark, but a better life - she wanted to go to college, start a new career, and then have kids, and she wanted to do that with him.  But if he didn't support that, wanting her to instead pop out a kid while they're living in a shitty trailer and keep working a crappy job, then she was going to do it without him.

There was such incredible potential in that episode, with her talking about maybe becoming an EMT or physical therapist or something, him jumping to she's going to become a doctor and leave me, things getting all mixed up for a time, and then them settling into a mindset where positive change is a real possibility ... and then Lecy couldn't get away to do the Disney episodes, and we're right back to Sarah's unambitious airhead version of Becky.

Had to come look for this section of the comment, because after a couple of rewatches again. I realized how Mark was taken for granted by Becky

I am one who is usually is no Becky isn’t that bad, but after the rewatches like what the hell. Who calls their significant other worthless, or is willing in Becky’s case during Becky Howser M.D to I guess the right analogy would be ‘thrown away like yesterday’s trash’ willing to leave Mark behind and probably not give a damm of what type of emotional pain that would have done to Mark. Who was devoted to her. Like I know Mark wasn’t mr.sensitive and emotional like David. But the idea of what that would have done to Mark who was kicked out by his parents at 16 and now the person who he loves just decides to leave him, basically thrown away like he was by his parents. Shit that would have broken him, probably would have made him feel like he was just being used.

Like I still like them as a couple, but I honestly now seeing that Becky had more faults than Mark did.

I totally understand Lecy wanting to go to college but the writing for Chalk destroyed one of the most compelling teenage/young adults characters to ever be on television.

Becky was flawed but she was REAL. The much more recent show, Modern Family, had teenage girls who were nothing but stereotypes.

You have the pretty airhead (Hailey) that all the boys love and is just interested in fashion. By the way, there are many smart people who are interested in fashion but on sitcoms, it is always looked upon as a bimbo pursuit.

You have the smart one (Alex) that has no social skills and everyone hates.

Becky was a generation before these girls and she was so much more nuanced and well written...not to mention the Lecy played (and still does) the hell out the character.

Generations later we are still talking about Becky. Twenty years from now no one will be talking about Hailey or Alex in the same way.

I remember the conversation between Mark and Roseanne very well; it was lovely.

And Roseanne had to talk some sense into Becky, too.

But it left them in a good potential place, with Becky getting back to her old self.  And Mark had always been supportive of her ambitions in the past (when it was Original Recipe Becky), so it felt like once he got over feeling blindsided and insecure, he'd once again feel that way.

But instead it all just went away entirely because we saw Sarah in the role almost exclusively after that.

If fans where to really and I mean really pay attention to the episode and instead of focusing on seeing Becky’s side of the things in the episode. And remember the conversation between Roseanne and Mark.

Becky never brought up the subject of college till that episode/storyline, Mark says to Roseanne that Becky has been cutting him out of any decisions/probably not even telling him anything. She wasn’t communicating about college to him. Some many fans invalidate Mark’s feelings during this episode, the entire thing was sprung on him. He wasn’t going to leave her because of it, he says so to Roseanne, that he felt like Becky wasn’t communicating anything to him anymore about major life decisions.

We could have seen some real development for Becky and Mark if it wasn’t for the damm Disney episodes.

It was such a wasted opportunity.

Now with Glen (RIP) gone...many of us will never get the closure that we so desire.

I am watching Season 1 of The Conners.

Mark calls Jackie "Aunt Jackie".

Why does he call her that?

Jackie is his Mom's Mom's Sister.

Wouldn't Grandma Jackie be more correct?

This is in "One Flew Over The Conners' Nest".

Jackie is Mark's great-aunt, so he just shortens it to "aunt." It's not uncommon, and I referred to my own great-aunts this way as a kid.

I am early in season 2, finished episode 9.

1)  If Odessa lives by herself, what does she do for money, while still going to school?

If Harris lives with Odessa, is Harris expected to pay for food by herself?

2)  Also, why does DJ not get any major storylines? He seems to have less than 4 mins of air time in any episode.

Why didn't the actor Fishman want a role similar to what he had on Roseanne, which was occasional major storylines?

3)  Also why does a stew place need a pizza oven?

4)  This wiki says that Louise was mentioned early in the Roseanne series.

What episode was she mentioned?

Wow I just noticed this now about Louise and I've been to that site numerous times! I didn't believe I didn't catch that - to answer your question I can't remember her being mentioned on the original Roseanne at all which I don't think she was, unless they meant the season 10 reboot which it seems that's what they mean, but I didn't watch the reboot at all I only watch The Conners.

The only person me and a few others (On Discord) think about when it comes to old high school acquaintances from the original and not just made for the sake of the new story is Phyllis Zimmer.

someone speculates that Phyllis role/backstory was given to Louise and just expanded upon and changed up.

Yes they are, but that answer is from Louise's first appearance in season 1. so I think they were asking about if Louise was mentioned elsewhere in the show like in the reboot or on the original and not The Conners because that's what the site mentioned.

It looks like the wiki has been changed a few days ago.

The version a few days ago said Louise was mentioned in the original Roseanne series.  That's where my confusion was, because I couldn't find nor remember any reference to that.

It looks like someone else cleaned it up and corrected it.

Here was what the wiki had said, before it was corrected a few days ago:

Quote

She was first mentioned near the beginning of the [[Roseanne (TV series)|Roseanne]] series, however her character doesn't debut on-screen until the [[Season 1 (The Conners)|first season]] of [[The Conners]]

I always assumed it was just a regional name for a sloppy Joe, but I also just googled it in late 2021, and apparently they're different. I've never personally seen a loose meat sandwich offered for sale where I live. We used to get sloppy Joes in school. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've seen sloppy Joes in restaurants either.

Here in my corner of the world (Iowa), these are called Maid-Rites. The meat is lightly seasoned and very, very soft. On a steamed bun they melt in your mouth. We put cooked ground beef in the crockpot for 4-6 hours and get pretty close.

Loose meat sandwiches are definitely not Sloppy Joes. 🙂

A cheeseburger is the only way I like ground beef, and sloppy Joe's and loose meat sandwiches do not appeal to me.  (If I had to eat one, I'd take the loose meat sandwich, because it doesn't have sauce.)

And the version on the show looks, as @Snow Apple said, watery.  Not juicy, not even greasy - it looks watery (in that scene where Roseanne lifts a spoonful of it up).  And an unappetizing color, too.  Who knows what it was actually made of, as a prop that's going to sit under studio lights, but it was ugly.

I read today it's on the bubble for renewal. I am sad but recognize why. I grew up with this family during the original run, bad acting and all I loved them. I was so happy to revisit their lives as I felt I knew the family and cared about their futures. I am glad for the reboot, happy to see they all stuck together and love seeing the old actors who had left the business given a second chance. We all know Michael and Lecy will fall back off the radar once the reboot ends.

I think they could have done so much better. They tried to cram in every popular or current social issue. Gay children, interracial marriage, joining the armed forces as a means of earning and the separation from family, poverty, aging, drug abuse, bullying, gun violence, immigration, unplanned births, second marriages, adult children dependent on families, Covid etc. I am sure I am missing many.

I miss the old episodes where the subject was Becky farting in class, Darlene writing a poem, Rosie, Dan and Jackie finding and smoking pot, Roseanne showing the home economics class what it was like to shop on a budget. Not every episode carried so much weight. It was serious but lighter if that makes sense.

I do not wish it to end this season but I hope if it's renewed they recapture some of the magic. Darlene is way beyond the angry girl she was in the original, she's toxic. Jackie is way too stupid for all of her life experience. Dan is a door mat. Becky is OK in my opinion but far too dependent on family. She has goals and is moving forward but she is asking for too much, she's been a child for over 40 years and now expects everyone else to start the same routine with her child.

Sorry for rambling, I'm just bummed. I think they could have redone this with some wins for the family. It's ridiculous to ask us to believe they have done NOTHING to the house in 30 plus years. Paint, new furniture, new pictures on wall, new appliances etc. Dan is a contractor with friends in all of the businesses. We all know the carpet, furniture, appliances, paint etc. would not have held up since the 80's. They should have just shown us minor adjustments, while cosmetic fixes cost money they are not always out of reach.

And lastly, don't get me started again on the tearing down of the gorgeous Victorian funeral home. Sigh....

Thanks for letting me vent!

Is loose meat like pulled pork or chicken? I haven't had a Sloppy Joe in many years but actually put it on the grocery list to try for the nostalgia. I will probably think it's OK but my husband will eat anything on a bun.

I was reading a thread on Reddit a few days ago, did not comment as I don't have an account. People were discussing Lecy's departure and return to the original series. Someone stated it was because Tom Arnold didn't like her. Others felt bad for Sarah Chalke being asked to leave to allow Lecy to come back.  I thought I remembered reading at the time that Lecy wanted to go to college, the whole experience. Roseanne understood and encouraged her to go, she told her she could come back afterwards. Sarah was told if Lecy chose to come back her time as Becky would be up and understood. I think I am right, this would also explain the fact that Sarah showed no animosity and even returned a couple of times as a new character. Does anyone else remember?

He can be a dishwasher at Jackie’s restaurant or he can work for Dan as a construction worker.

I’d love to see Dean, the guy Becky dated when she broke up with Mark, appear. He should have shown up instead of the random guy who appeared last season.

Dean, Dean the son in law machine? I'd love to see him show as some kind of fabulously wealthy tech mogul who sweeps Becky off her feet into a life of luxury.

I said the exact same thing (though a little while ago).

He is the perfect example of someone who thinks they are on the road to success only to realize the world is not so simple.

I can imagine him being the type to lose all his money day trading a little before The Great Recession and now have to take jobs that he finds "humiliating".

I just hope they don't make him a love interest for Becky.
