S03.E04: Blindsided

Recommended Posts

I liked the subtle changes with Matt choosing to be Daredevil and letting Matt Murdock die. With Matt "dead", he allowed himself to walk freely without that identity, so no cane and no fear of people spotting him. It was a very interesting shift, indeed.

Marci's excitement over her plan for Foggy to run and get the issue with Fisk out there was a great scene to see. But I think they're leading to a Foggy win as the district attorney. I'm glad his name's getting out there, but I wonder how it's going to play out.

Karen is getting too deep with her investigation, especially now that she knows Matt is alive. I loved the scene with her and Foggy at his place. It was powerful on her end, especially.

That one take scene was ten minutes long and it was pretty damn good.

Fisk and Dex interact more and it seems like Fisk is slowly getting through to Dex. That's not a good sign.

That ending was certainly climatic!

Ah, the infamous "one-take" scene for the season!  Pretty fun, although I could point out the moments where they switched out Charlie Cox with a stuntman and vice versa. Still, the logistics, length and effort put into it was impressive.

So, who is going to end up tragically eating their words first: Ray telling his wife that nothing will happen to him or Foggy swearing that he wouldn't let anything happen to Marci?

Glad Foggy ignored Matt and told Karen the truth, but I have a feeling she's going to go off the deep end if she's not careful.

Fisk is definitely planting the seeds to get Dex to flip over to his side.

I'm more forgiving of that because this is the first one-take where Charlie Cox's face wasn't covered by a mask so they needed to cheat the cameras a bit to allow the stuntman to perform the more dangerous stunts. It was still an impressive one-take. Is this the longest one they've had?

Soooo, it turns out “Fisk shanked Fisk.” Good one, show.

Damn. What’s the point of putting convicts alway when they get to do what they want and run the prisons? Oh, wait. I just answered my own question.

I just can’t with Karen. Her anger at Matt with the “But that’s just Matt” just doesn’t ring true for me. She decided she couldn’t handle being in a relationship with him while he was Dare Devil. Fine. But this anger and judgment against him as if she’s still in a relationship with him? Doesn’t compute.

Again with the awful Hindi. I’m sorry it bugs because it I can hear the American accent.

Man, I did not see that dive into the water coming!!!

Right? It’s like saying “I’ll be right back” in a horror movie or having one week until retirement in a cop drama.

I really liked the hallway scene and Fisk talking to Matt. I definitely did not see the attacking by that doctor coming. One thing I was wondering, though. How was Fisk doing that when being watched all the time. I doubt he is allowed a computer or phone access except to contact his lawyers. I know they turn the cameras off sometimes when the lawyers are there but orchestrating that would take more time then that...

I read that it was 11 min long so it must clock in at the longest.

I personally was impressed with the things that Charlie Cox did do in the scene that I can overlook the times where it was just the back of his head so his double could be the one slammed against the wall.

I just read somewhere that they 3, 5, and 11 minutes, respectively. Like them all, but I would say the first is still my favorite, and this one probably my least. Partially because it was tough watching a still rebuilding and drugged Matt struggle through the battle, but also there are a few instances where prison guards were getting shivs stuck in their necks right in front of him, and it was weird watching Matt ignore that in his effort to escape. I know he was off his game and lucky to escape alive, but that just felt off to me.

Well, it wouldn't be Daredevil without the patented One-Take-Hallway-Brawl.

Took the words right out of my mouth!

The first season oner is still my favorite, but this is pretty close. Really impressive. Like you, I could see the switches, but wow. And that one kick pushing off the patient table was definitely CC. Daredevil continues to be the leader for Marvel tv shows when it comes to action choreography.

I figured Fisk had somehow put all of this into motion, but it was nice to see that suspicion confirmed. Poindexter is fast approaching his turning point, although I think they've made him a little too committed to law enforcement for it to be wholly believable.

Also saw the Foggy for DA plot coming, but we'll see how it goes. Also, as much as I generally enjoy Karen, she really is the worst investigative journalist. She seems absolutely unable to approach a story objectively, and is completely oblivious when Ellis tells her the same thing.

Of course Fisk had himself shanked, to set all this up. At first, I thought the fact he nearly killed the guy who did it showed that he wasn't behind it, but I guess I forgot about his rage issues.

And of course the show gives us another lo-fi, dirty and dark, corridor fight. Harsh realism always trumps CGI driven spectacle. I don't know how the hell Matt is still alive, with the punishment he takes. That prison riot was nasty, and I rolled by eyes at the idea of the taxi driver waiting... turns out he didn't.

Foggy freaking out over Fisk and Matt, and Marcie being supportive and offering helpful advice, was nice. She's still clearly ambitious, a "legal shark", but ambitious on Foggy's behalf, as well as her own. And I'm really pleased he went straight and told Karen that Matt was alive, and that she immediately went on the warpath, instead of being winsomely distressed and self-flagellating about it.

They're not pulling punches in showing how selfish the vigilante lifestyle can be. That while he's devoting his life to administering justice, he's hurting the people who care about him, deeply. It's always a central theme in superhero/vigilante stories: This idea of whether someone can have their own, civilian life, as well as being a secret crime-fighter.

But now he's really in trouble, because Fisk thinks that Matt has done something to Vanessa, and he knows that Matt is Daredevil. I think Foggy and Karen really do need to be warned, now. Although it seems like Karen is looking for trouble, all on her own.

That was a scene that I wasn't really comfortable with. Because on the one hand, guys feeling free to catcall and harass women, then call it "friendly" suck. But on the other hand, people pulling guns on unarmed people, especially on young black men, also suck.

Then you have Foggy running for DA on a single issue, which revolves around harnessing populist anger. Again, there's some ambivalence there.

I was so happy about this. It's great that the show didn't drag that out.

I figured Fisk set it all up himself.

"The only person I love". Wow, I'm sad for his daughter. I'm so tired of romantic relationships being the be-all and end-all to some. One thing I love about these shows, is the friendships.

I googled the nickname I've seen for Dex, and it spoiled the stalking part of the story. I didn't think the girlfriend existed, but that's messed up.

Fisk is so good. He arranged for his own shanking. Nice. I really enjoy trying to figure out his long game.

Had a hard time buying all the cops, who were already annoyed at Foggy, signing up after one short speech.

I’m not sure why we are getting so much about Naddem and his personal life. Don’t know if it is the actor or the acting, but I am not invested in him or his family.

Everyone sure gets mad at Matt. Guy has a building fall on him, is gone for a few months and all his “friends” care about us why he hasn’t told them he is alive. They don’t even ask him what he was doing.

Can’t wait to try to get rid of someone by suggesting they go get a cup of coffee- my treat!

That was the ultimate hallway scene! Made to seamlessly look like one long, eleven minute shot. The stuntwork, choreography and camera work was fantastic. Kudos to Charlie Cox, the director and the whole behind-the-scenes team. I laughed out loud when they showed the cab still waiting outside the prison. Of course it turned out to be a different driver working for Fisk or else you'd have a joke where Matt gets in the cab and the real driver goes "What the fuck?!"

Fisk looking up at the camera at Dex was such a chilling moment. Vincent D'Onofrio is so great in this role.

Marci being such a loving, supportive girlfriend is not something I would have predicted but it makes me happy.

When that fight broke out in the prison, I was like, "COME ON. How was Fisk able to get that many prison guards on his side? After all he's done?" I couldn't believe no one came to Matt's aid during all of that. Good grief. So intense.

I did too! I thought, "Seriously?!" With all the alarms blaring about a lockdown, he's still cool with waiting for Matt? My next thought was how on earth Fisk was orchestrating all of this.

I appreciate the tension, but at some point it's got to be a little implausible for him to have such reach this time around. (Especially the way he was able to just talk to Matt over some sort of speaker in that exam room, from the privacy of his hotel room penthouse where he's supposed to have pretty much nothing. WTF?)

I thought he had no money left because he spent it to get safe when he first went into prison (and the rest was for protecting Vanessa).

The prison riot was five minutes too long and I didn't care for Foggy's "Nazi" rally in order to win the support of the NYPD.  A militarized police force?  Ugh!

Apparently, the showrunner forgot this.  Or somebody did.
