Shay reverts to form, to Irene's dismay. Joey falls in love. Darlene deals with unexpected news. Lori hits a roadblock in her quest for adult-film stardom. Alston faces a dilemma involving his old partner, Flanagan. Paul and Kenneth arrive at a crossroads.

As soon as they showed Flanagan parked next to the river, I knew he was going to kill himself.

As soon as we met "Flanaga" in S1.E1, I couldn't wait for him to kill himself.

Moral of this week’s episode: never go to Vermont when you have business with the mob.

Did this trip remind anyone else of the Tony Soprano in Costa Mesa, CA episode?

It reminds me more of that time Vito was outed, ran for his life, and hooked up with Morgan Spurlock.

The restaurant that CC and the blonde (forget her name) were sitting in looked like Peter Luger's, one of NYC's primest old steakhouses. I cringed when CC ordered two porterhouses well done. If I'd been that waiter I would have shown them the door!

I was surprised that Candy was okay with the mob backing her movie. She does realize that she'll likely never be able to break free of them, right? At least not until the general porn-viewing public has access to the internet in about 10-15 years.

How did Darlene end up pregnant? I mean, I know "how" but if they're not using some kind of birth control how do the girls not end up perpetually pregnant? You'd think the pimps would insist upon it.

I don't get the mob's mentality. If he's such a good earner what does killing him accomplish? Either way, they're losing his services. Seems to me it'd be smarter if they let him move to Vermont and then take control of whatever place he gets into up there. Or he could move further away like the other side of the country.

I knew as soon as Flanagan got to the river that he was going to kill himself. I guess Alston will cover up his murder to save his family from knowing what he actually did. I always knew the guy was a mess, but dang.

I continue to be super concerned for Lori. CC is a terrifying combination of insecure and violent, and if Lori ever really makes a move to break away from him, I see it ending VERY badly for her. He can see the writing on the wall, that Lori wont need him anymore very soon, and he hates it.

So Candy can put up with the mob, but not with them being sexist jerks? I feel like its inevitable that her son will find out about Candy in a super messed up way, like he sees her Red Riding Hook movie, or one of his friends sees it and tells him. Hows that for a childhood memory? Get your first porn, and it features your mom!

CC definitely seems like he's going to kill someone--Lori or maybe Dave or Dorothy. I'm afraid to see what happens!

A lot of story lines this week. Vincent's trip was interesting but seemed to come out of nowhere. Maybe they are going to kill him off and want us to feel sorry for him with his dream of a simple, country life. And who exactly is trying to kill him?

I thought in the beginning of the movie plot Candy had said she didn't want to take mob money at all. Now she's okay with it but not happy with how they treat her? Once she took the money she should have known they would have a say in decisions.

I like Larry's dream of an acting career!

I felt like Candy's son needed a shot of penicillin just walking around that set.  I'm also a little confused about Candy's sudden need to tell her son about her work.  From what I recall, this wasn't the first porn film she has been in, correct?  Is the concern that this movie will be so big that even the bridge and tunnel crowd is going to hear about it?

I think Dorothy's return has already destabilized things, as CC has a woman in his face who got away and he can't control.  I can't imagine he'd voluntarily let that happen again.

Yes -- that, and they plan to publicize "the feminism part" and make Candy the "face" of the film. She's going to be featured and interviewed, and someone who knows her in her other life is going to recognize her as Eileen, and all it takes is one leak. (Though she appeared in other porn, nobody who wasn't a customer ever saw her face.)

As to the original question, though Red Hot! is fictional, the Alice in Wonderland they've talked about as its precursor was real. After its initial X-rated urban engagements, after cutting 3 minutes (all the hard-core moments, leaving plenty of skin), it was reclassified R and played widely. It showed up in my college town, as in many others. That kind of distribution would blow Candy's anonymity permanently.

Someone said it last week, but I find myself thinking it too: I could watch a whole series devoted to Larry Brown's journey into acting.

Absolutely ... and I'm also fascinated by the parallel storylines of CC and Larry ... how the one is left in the dust by a changing world and the other has found a new calling.

Vincent couldn't live in Vermont.  He enjoys the whole NYC vibe and would get bored after some time has passed.

CC is one angry little guy.  He's going to blow real soon.

Larry Brown's ass is ridiculous as in ridiculously fine.

That whole wristwatch thing was ridiculous. I'm not really sure what that whole subplot added to the show we didn't already know - that in this world the women are treated as disposable and the men close ranks around their own.

RE: the financing behind Candy's film, are we to understand that rival mob bosses are both owed a piece? Wasn't the guy in the scene who asked her to leave and let the men talk the rival of the guy Vince and Frankie run around with? So by getting him involved Frankie screwed them because the film is a property owed to both sides? They haven't really given Maggie Gyllenhaal much to play this season so I expect that the next two episodes will lead her to some moral dilemma to deal with around making sure the film positions her for what's next. I think she'll make a survivor's choice.

There's not just one mob - it's people working for another family who are out to get Vincent.

Good for Paul's boyfriend wising up, dumping him, and asking for his share of the club.

I was under the impression that the new car and "missed" gunshots exercise ("Vincent those were aimed at you!") was a setup to scare the shit out of him so he wouldn't disappear again.  His being a good earner is the only reason why they didn't just kill him in an alley.

Wouldnt that make you more likely to want to get out?

At that time (when you could actually move somewhere rural and "disappear")  Vincent could probably leave and never come back and be fine, but for most people a close encounter like that one would scare them straight back into line.

Oh yeah, I would pay good money to see that! Not that I dont like the rest of the show, I do, but man, Larry Brown and his blossoming pron career is the plot line I never saw coming, but, as it turns out, I needed the whole time. I love every second of it.

Does Candy know where Frankie got the $20k?  He brought the bag on the set but I don’t remember him saying where it came from.  Maybe he did.

Color me surprised. I just read that Bobby's son Joey is being played by Michael Gandolfini.

Wow!  Did not know that.

Yes, Larry Brown storyline is definitely exciting.

I don't worry at all about Candy.  She has respect from all the degenerates of The Deuce.  She was a “solo” street hustler, and the pimps gave her free space.

I don’t know why, but my hero is Vince.  I hope he makes it out.
