Devon and Conrad race against the clock to save the life of a woman who is deteriorating fast from undetermined symptoms. When the patient turns out to be a hero who helps previous criminals get their lives back together, the team relies on her family of ex-cons to help diagnose and treat her. Tensions rise as Nic continues her search for evidence to incriminate Lane, but must simultaneously tend to her sister, Jessie, who is rushed into the ER. Meanwhile, York returns to the hospital with his mother, who is in need of a risky procedure, and comes face-to-face with the stone-cold Dr. AJ Austin.

That wasn't as frentically paced as usual.  I enjoyed it much more.  Gah on the previews!! And I'm over the bullshit doctor annoying Mina!

This show is a hot mess, but there were two subtle references to an iconic book that you young folks might not have picked up on.  There were two terms, "TURF" and "GOMER" that the docs used tonight.  TURF means just refer the patient to another specialty, GOMER  means "get out of my emergency room".

The book, "House of God", written by Samuel Shem was published in 1978.  I must have read it about that time, when I was working in a county hospital at the ripe old age of 27.  It was a must read for all aspiring doctors at the time.  It details the real life of residents and how they see patients.  It's hysterically funny....I remember reading it several times back in the day.  There's some very dark humor in it, but it's much more realistic than this show.  I've just downloaded it from BN to read again.

Liz from Gilmore Girls! Her symptoms were crazy and puzzling. I was thinking encephalitis or some weird bacteria caused by an environmental trigger. Parasite works.

That ex patient who sticks crap up his butt is creepy. I feel bad for his mom for having such a weird son. Dr Austin continues to be a breath of fresh air.

I liked how they showed how narcan is given correctly. Nic is awesome. The actress that plays her sister looked familiar.

They got to me with "No Need To Argue" at the end, the bastards! Dolores O'Riordan :(

Not as exciting as the last episodes, but I enjoyed it in spite of a lack of Lane and Team Shady. I still got a Nic/Lane confrontation, one of the highlights. Good that Nic stood her ground and didn't buy what Lane was selling. It was satisfying to see Nic shut the door in Lane's face, and said face afterwards was downright scary. It was a good episode for Nic. First it showed her moral strength and how she doesn't belong to the Good Is Dumb category, then she proved herself smart by turning the tables on creepy guy (my favorite funny moment) and finally it showed that she wasn't invulnerable. I also liked that Lane could set her up because Nic trusted her "friend", no need to dumb her down to make it work, as well as the detail "before staff arrival" that completely justified her going to the clinic at the wee hours of the morning. The "friend" should get her karma rather soon... she's a witness and a liability for Lane, now.

I'm really fond of Nic and Conrad, the way their relationship is written for now. I can see they trust each other and specifically in the way Nic counted on Conrad to take care of her sis -notwithstanding the Ominous Secret from a Wild Dark Youth anvil. I  also liked how Conrad wasn't a stranger to the sister. Very often on procedurals, characters don't appear to know their in-laws or their friends' friends and it always rings false to me. The portrayal of addiction rang rather true, too, with the self-loathing and apologizing phase which I realized I haven't seen too often on TV.

Austin definitely has potential but there was a bit too much of him here. He's interesting as a non-evil foil for Mina and as an unpredictable thorn in Bell's side, but I don't want him to take over the show. I did love his rapport with the annoying patient's mother, and I could see how temper-wise they'd get along. I cheered when Mina stood her ground, too. You bet she stays who she is, meaning awesome amazeballs.

Kathleen Wilhoite guest-starring in the episode featuring the main female character's addict sister was a funny coincidence. It gave me ER flashbacks. Conrad and Dev make a really good team now and I was glad to see more of Feldman. Loved how Dev got a little revenge against the insertion maniac with his "mistake".

Bell was such a hypocrite about not taking gambles, and his zinger about Nic, ouch. I like that the show peppers reminders that if he isn't as evil as Lane, he's definitely not a good guy either.

Was this one the calm before the storm? I hope so.

Kathleen Wilhoite is one of my favorite actresses. She is so believable in anything she does. Loved seeing her again (and she looks the same as always - doesn't age much).

If I had been Nic, I think I would have played dumb with Lane just to throw her off my trail. I would not have taken her offer but I would have thanked her and "played nice" in my best acting mode. That might have bought her some time/anonymity to look into Lane's stuff more closely.

And loved, loved, loved the guy who went to the stalker guy's apartment to defend "my little sister Nic"... : ) Karma is a bitch! : )

See, I've got to disagree on this one. She's probably have been questioned if she'd been found in her car outside of the clinic but going into that clinic alone was dumb. I don't expect her to see the arrest coming, but she still has been stalked and she went somewhere isolated all alone when that wasn't what she was expecting. There was no reason to put herself in that danger when her friend wasn't answering the phone and her car wasn't in the parking lot. (We've seen several times that the lot is just an open lot in front of the clinic so it would be easy to see if the car was there or not.) Nic should never have gotten out of her car but did because she wanted the info and still isn't grasping how dangerous Lane can be in spite of the fact that Lane murdered someone. Nic has been acting on emotions since she got fired and it's making her dumb.

Loved that book. Quoth the Fat Man: “First, do nothing.” (Also “buff ‘em and turf ‘em.”)

How stupid is Nic not to smell a setup when asked to show up at Lane’s clinic at 4 FREAKIN’ A.M.? 6 a.m., maybe, but 4?! Honestly I thought she was about to meet with an “accident” there.

Question:  I stepped away for a call and I missed a few things.  From reading these posts, I'm guessing her friend that works for Lane set her up.  But what was she actually arrested for?

They didn't say, but considering the place looked ransacked and the door was conveniently left open for her (and shut right after she entered), probably trespassing or breaking and entering. Maybe even worse if medical files are claimed to be missing.

Breaking and Entering is one thing for sure.  And violating HIPAA laws, potentially. I am sure there’s a laundry list.

I loved this episode- how great  “Liz’s” community was to her, and towards her.  And that the guy who charged 48K for the cure was charging that much and wasn’t taking huge profits at all.  And that Devon was able to diagnose her disease.

I am so ready for Lane to get arrested and thrown in the slammer for the next billion years.

I just remembered that Bell told Lane to "clean out any files necessary"...so this set up killed two birds with one stone - files were stolen so therefore are not available to scrutinize and the breaking & entering charge got Nic put in jail. (Would she really have been in an actual prison though yet?)

Ok..I am really dense here and need some help please.  What was the point of Dr. Temper tantrum to call trauma Dr. Nolan into the OR. I did not understand the scene at all, and does Dr. Nolan 'outrank' Dr. Astin.

I forgot about this too. I didn't "get it" either.

He was attempting to show, ( or prove his world domination of) a person who followed his directions....shut up and got out of his way.  Thank heavens Mina isn't buying what he's selling.  I liked the delusional diagnosis. :)

Actually, "Good but not Dumb" meant to point at Nic not buying Lane's BS about wanting to help her. Good characters are always stupidly forgiving as soon as a villain fakes contrition, and thankfully it wasn't the case here.

As for the clinic, Nic had gotten rid of her stalker and she trusted her friend. She also knew that her friend was afraid to lose her job so she would have taken precautions to protect herself (like not parking where she usually did). Curiosity killed the cat, maybe, but I wouldn't call her dumb in this case either.

I'm torn. I want Lane to pay, but I don't want to loose Melina K. she's the salt and pepper of the show. I'll take something as far-fetched and cliché as a head wound-induced amnesia if that's what it takes.

I really like this show but the addition of Theo Huxtable is not adding to my enjoyment.  Nothing against the actor but that character is annoying.

I hate when they introduce characters in the middle of a season that detracts from the ongoing storyline. The Raptor is/was not necessary. That operating room scene was ludicrous.

Dr Austin is saving the show. Want to be Nancy Drew fired nurse added some chapters to the book -Stupid things people do in a horror movie. And the chatty patty nurse walking into the 'AWAKE' surgery-dumb butt and right to be called out.

Is stalker guy by some chance working for the Dr nurse nic went to see, maybe to see if she is legit?

I may be done with this show. I like Mina a lot, and I liked the show's discussion of the realities of money in US health care, but it's veering off the rails now. I'm not that interested in mustache-twirling villains and thriller plots.

I just watched Emily VC on YouTube and she says the show is loosely based on a real life nurse who whistleblew on a Dr. Giving cancer drugs to people, and that the Dr. Is in jail now. Wow, fascinating!

Now that I'm done re-reading it, I'm thinking back to the first episode of this show.  Didn't Conrad tell the new 'tern, "forget everything you learned in medical school"?  Maybe Conrad is really the Fat Man in disguise.

That's interesting. I never heard of that book, but around our area, northern Midwest, larger city hospital, turf meant kick out to the streets and Gomer referred, unfortunately, to a person in a vegetative state. I like your meanings better!

I think in tonight's episode, when they said turf, it meant kick out, because it was used soon after it was mentioned that the patient was uninsured, when Conrad said they needed to get Claudia treated before Bell found out and turfed her. We all know the bottom line is paramount to him, so I'm pretty sure they weren't afraid he'd transfer her to another specialty, which wouldn't have made much sense anyway. They were afraid he'd find a way to get her discharged without proper treatment, perhaps passed onto another hospital. (Also not kosher.)

The way they used "gomer" didn't fit either definition. The character said Viagra, etc. was "helping gomers hump like rabbits," so apparently she meant elderly or grannies. Guess that's better than the insulting term for people in a vegetative state.

I haven't commented here before, but it is still blowing my mind how "Dr." Hunter coldbloodedly killed Lila. Beotch.

I still like this show but had some problems with this episode. First, it felt like I was in a teen horror movie shouting to Nic "don't go inside" her house with the door open (why not call 911 to report a possible break-in and wait for the police, given that she knows someone creepy is after her), and shouting to her even louder when she entered the clinic alone despite her "friend" not being there.

Second, I didn't like the white savior plot, with all the scary-looking (in a Hollywood way, not really all that scary) Black and Hispanic ex-gang members and ex-cons treating her like a beloved mother and saint. It's not that there aren't white people in real life who do wonderful things working with minority gang members and ex-cons, but this felt over the top.

Third (a lesser complaint), did Nic go straight to jail without an arraignment or a lawyer? I guess she used her one call to call Conrad about her sister, but couldn't she have asked him to also find a lawyer?

I will be really upset if the evil oncologist doesn't get her comeuppance soon, but I suspect that the writers will keep Nic in jail or at least in danger of her life being ruined well into next season. Oh well, on to the season finale.
