On Chicago Fire Season 5 Episode 7, a secret about Boden's stepson comes to light while Dawson and Antonio host a family reunion for their parents' anniversary.

Also:

Quote

It's a family reunion when Dawson and Antonio's mother and father come to Chicago for their big anniversary party, but things quickly turn south. When a deep secret comes to the surface involving his stepson James, Chief Boden decides to take matters into his own hands. Meanwhile, Casey tries to save a young boy during a harrowing call to a warehouse and Otis and Kidd become competitive at the mud-hundred race.

Thanks for starting the thread! I got busy.  :-)

Who was watching Louie while Casey and Gabby were: in the bar; getting dressed at home; at Gabby's parent anniversary party?  Wouldn't Louie have been taken to the party and shown off by them? Can't you just imagine his sad little face in a cute little baby-tux?

Was I the only one that knew it was the mom's boyfriend the moment I saw the bruises? Interesting, and maybe laudable, that Boden never saw the bruises and Severide never saw the bruises, they all just trusted Cruz' word. I don't understand why Cruz just didn't go directly to Boden, unless it was to give Severide more air time.

Did the man being swallowed by grain quicksand survive?

Regarding next week's preview: Hey Gabby, read any self-help book. It will advice you against getting married a week after your parents announce their divorce.

Ahhh, poor Boden.  He just gets his life back on track, and goes and beats up another miscreant.  Assault and Battery must not be a noticeable crime in Chicago when it's done because your son was a beating victim.

I didn't even think about Louie.  He's probably back at the apartment, downloading porn on the computer and seeing how loud the stereo will really go.

It looked like the grain guy did survive.  I think that was meant to give Casey a win after the warehouse death.

Otis, what the hell?  You bring all those mudheads into a bar? Way to drive out business.   Hermann may be afraid to look at the books, but he had better. Maybe that is going to be plot point in the future.

I was really surprised when Casey told James to run interference against the truck driver at the traffic accident.  The boy is 17.  There's no end to the amount of trouble Casey could get into if something went wrong there.

I loved this episode. And any time Show focuses on my two boys Matt and Kelly in the same scene, just the two of them, I remember why I love this show. The best. To me everyone else is fun, but these two.... Thank you, Show.

Okay, I am loving Stella as one of the guys. Don't be putting her with Kelly again. I'm okay with Sylvee and Antonio. If Gabby gets hit by a bus next week my life will be complete.

Is it wrong that I love Mr Dawson? And a couple of good fistfights this week--Antonio pops Dad, Boden pops the guy who beat up his kid (and sorry actor who plays James, anyone whose name is James or Jimmy is not long for the House--at least you didn't have half your face burned off). Assault charges for nobody!

I think Severide did that.  I think it's crazy that a high schooler was allowed to ride along much less suit up and help out.

I also wondered where Louis was.  Too big to be napping every time we were in their apartment.

Muddy Stella behind the bar and delivering drinks?  Yuck!

One of the first things I thought of when Boden said "James will be spending a couple of shifts with us" was, is the Firehouse insured for having high school kids as interns, or for "Bring Your Kids To Imperil Them At Work Day"?

Another episode where Gabby is the special snowflake. Let's make her parents' divorce all about her. You know, even though she's a grown-ass woman. I mean, I can understand her being upset but sitting outside crying about it? Jeepers, lady. Even Casey knew better than to rain on her parade with his pesky little dead kid problem. No no no, mustn't spoil Special Gabby's Special Day. (Although to be fair Antonio was taking it a little too personally as well so maybe it runs in the family.)

I don't know where Herrmann gets off "assigning" Otis and Stella to pass out t-shirts at the mud run. Otis is part owner of that bar too. I'd have told him to do it himself if he was so keen on it. Good on Otis bringing back all the filthy runners with him.

And yeah, the round-about way Boden found out about the bruises via Severide via Cruz made it seem like the writers just didn't have anything for them to do this episode.

I'm not even surprised anymore with all the attention towards Gabby. Writers of the show must love actress who portrays her very much.

Am I the only one that doesn't like Brett/Antonio pairing? Not so much because of them as a couple, it's just the way they started this whole thing. She is supposed to be "the good girl" and they wanted to make her look that way since the first episode. Then BANG, fatal Antonio is the reason she converts in total sex animal. Like are you kidding me? They didn't even share a proper kiss! Inconsistency of the writers is just killing me softly.

The only characters that are actually fun to watch are Cruz and Otis, maybe Chief Boden. If only they had more scenes.

Everyone on this show, especially Boden, needs to have more fun and ordinary storylines.   Let the fires/accidents/disasters provide the drama in some episodes and allow the fire station people to have at least some brief periods without personal drama, and truama, where they are shown enjoying their lives and being happy.  So much angst and drama every single episode is too much and becomes boring.

I can't blame this show too much - it seems most shows are written that way now, neverending drama and trauma to get ratings and few actual stories about people.

I agree with this so much.

I liked Casey's devastation about the child. Jesse did a great job.

I liked what Spencer did here, too; and I believed Casey when he said "We lift each other up." I like the Casey/Gabby relationship, at least most of the time. And I don't mind Raymund or Gabby -- at least some of the time. I don't even find Gabby's hiding in the stairwell feeling sorry for herself all that objectionable. She was behaving in a more adult fashion than either parent or Antonio. Mind you, maybe it's just that I find Gabby less of a chore in comparison with her brother. I find Antonio either intolerably boring or jerky, or both at once.

Why would someone need to be watching the kid while they were at home getting dressed? The kid is probably around 3 so unless they leave knives or other sharp objects around I don't think he would need constant supervision.

Is Molly's losing money again? I thought the whole storyline last year was they would make Stella a partner and her bar running expertise turned the place around. Plus how is it doing so poorly when in almost every other ep, and in every episode of PD the place is always full.

I think the point was that we never saw or heard Louie.  When Casey got home, you would think Louie would have come out from wherever he was to see him.  Or he would have followed Dawson out of the bedroom if he was hanging out with her while she got dressed.  Instead he didn't even seem to be in the apartment, and clearly he wasn't at the family party.  We keep seeing them out at Molly's and then double-dating with Antonio and Brett, and their child with his attachment and emotional issues is nowhere to be found.  It's jarring and takes me out of the show.

The actor who played Wiley's father really sold his grief. He should give lessons to Dawson who btw is really a bitch when she demanded that Casey bring her flowers and candy.

I am a Stella fan, too. She is the firefighter that Dawson can only dream of being.

I liked Boden's stepson and hope that they keep that relationship going. The kid is played by a decent actor.

I actually was surprised it was the boyfriend who was beating on James. The marks on his arm looked too small and I thought it was his mother. But then by the end of the episode, when she was at Boden's house, I knew it wasn't her. And I do get Boden's anger. Hell, I'd probably want to beat the crap out of the guy too. But here's a concept: call the police and let them handle it. Don't show up at the guy's restaurant and start beating on him! All that does is get you arrested for assault and doesn't help your kid in the least.

Gabby can just STFU any time now.

Otis and Stella walking into the bar covered in mud and then bringing in all the other runners just made my skin crawl. It was an open invitation for the health department to close that place down!

And I also questioned the legalities of having a 17-year-old boy playing firefighter and riding on the truck. Or even doing drills at the firehouse.

ETA: Antonio and Slyvie acting like high school kids in public was ridiculous. You're both in your 30s-40s. Keep your damn hands off each other! Hold  hands or something, but geez, I thought sure he was going to reach up her skirt at any second when they were at the party!

So did my firefighter neighbor. He even cringed about a civilian, let alone teen, wearing the uniform.

I don't imagine there would be much of an issue with the kid being at the fire station or running drills. It's not like if he gets hurt Boden's going to sue himself. But going on runs? Yeah . . . no.

But Boden isn't his dad or legal guardian.  His mom could totally sue, as could the guy who got beaten up because a child was asked to control the situation.  Severide continues to be not so bright there.

All i could think or was that the kid was already super uncomfortable, and now Boden beating up his mom's boyfrind is only going to make that worse. It is kind of why there are people trained to handle those situations.

When Casey at the end said "we lift each other up and she did it for him millions of times" I though "when?" When is Gabby ever not about Gabby? It was just an episode ago she was having a fit over someone who is working 3 jobs and took on her decision of a kid just wanted to go golf.

This.  I watch the show mostly out of habit and for the fire and rescue scenes, and I think it totally could have been so much more if the show focused more on Matt and Kelly and their relationship.  It's as if the powers-that-be have never really decided what the true focus of the show should be.

Does anyone remember when Gabby went out of her way for Matt? I can't.  I also get the impression that he is involved with most of the child care.

The only time I remember is when Dawson reached out to him when Hallie died. Oh, and she kinda helped Casey with the Darden boys...I say kinda because, if I remember correctly, Griffin had broken a bone under her supervision. That's about it...It would be much easier to recall all the cases when Gabby was bitching/manipulating Casey or ignoring his opinion...The reasons why Casey is so in love with her is beyond me!

TPTB are convinced - for whatever mysterious reasons - that all the fans are dying to see more Dawsey scenes. I totally agree with you that the show should have focused more on their two leads. Sevasey relationship is so multi-layered  There's so much to explore there.

The answer to this is that she hasnt 'lifted Casey up' so to speak - not that l can remember. She just uses him for her own ends and is totally self-centred, entitled and a bitch. l have no idea why the showrunners have made her such a big part of the show - they must be desperate! She is vile! Casey needs to get his balls back and dump her. (Maybe thats why he wanted to go and play golf??Hahaha). She is the weak link but Show seems to think she is something special. Well - here's some news----SHE IS NOT!

Stella also doesn't need to lay on the makeup like Gabby. I love that Stella looks like a (beautiful) woman who is willing to ugly-up to the job done, which happens to be saving desperate lives.

Did you notice that they've stopped dyeing Taylor's hair this season? I think they're running out of budget, hehe, with all the money they have to spend on Dawson's makeup...

And Stella and Brett don't seem to need to wear their shirts as skin tight as Gabby--maybe she wears soooo much eye makeup to draw her patients' and male coworkers' eyes upwards. I won't be surprised when her shirt splits down the middle from the strain.

What gets me is this show is about 90% male and everybody's complaining about Gabby, it boggles my mind.

Are you trying to pull the race card again? Trust me, Gabby's skin tone is the only thing I like about her!  Viewers hate her character not because she is a WOC but because she is so self-absorbed, entitled, cocky and treats Casey like crap! If she were white, I would dislike her just the same!

90% male??? Uhm, I don't want to question your maths skills but let's count:

Casey, Severide, Boden, Herrmann, Cruz, Otis, Mouch, Capp and Tony (although those two are mostly non-speaking characters and shouldn't be taken into account). Anyway, all in all  - 9 males;

Dawson, Brett, Kidd, Connie, Cindy, Donna - 6 females

So, it's 60% : 40%

Gabby is a polarizing character. But let's stop using the same circular arguments. All it does is lead to nowhere good. People can love her. People can hate her. If anyone cannot disagree civilly, please use the board ignore function. If anyone has questions on how to use it, that is what I am here for.

Now let's shake hands and move on, please.
