All Episodes Talk: Lorelai and Rory and the People They Love

Recommended Posts

The series finale aired in 2007 - 17 years ago! Actors have moved on, even died (Edward Hermann). The revival A Year in the Life that aired in in 2016 is as close as we're going to get to more stories. Unless you count the Walmart commercial with Sean Gunn, Scott Patterson, and Lauren Graham that aired this year. 😅

IDK, that is not what the cast says.

A few years later, the creator of the show (Amy Sherman-Palladino) provided an update on more episodes of our favorite Gilmore duo in October 2020.

“There’s no [obstacle] behind it except for lives and people doing [other] things,” she explained during a Woodstock Film Festival virtual panel discussion. “[A Year in the Life] was one of those kismet moments where we were kind of all looking at each other and going, ‘Well, let’s take a couple of months and hang out together and remind each other why we drove each other crazy.’ And it was a wonderful experience. I really do believe that if the time is right and the girls are where they need to be in their lives [it could happen].”

The actors for Lorelai, Rory, Emily and Luke were all open to the idea of a reboot in this article. They just said the timing and story has to be right which is absolutely possible.

And yet, 4 years after that article was published, not a hint of a sequel. Where would it air? I can't see a broadcast network airing it. Perhaps Netflix, where the sequel A Year in the Life aired in 2016, and is still available. Are Alexis Bledel and Matt Czuchry still interested?  It would be odd to see them referred to but not appear. As far as Emily's journey and other stories, for those who haven't seen A Year in the Life, I'll put this under a spoiler tag:

Spoiler

Emily makes quite a journey of growth in the sequel, freeing herself to the point of abandoning and dismissing her DAR connections. I think the sequel already addresses Emily's journey.

What would a sequel tackle? Who's the baby Daddy of Rory's child? Luke and Lorelai being doting grandparents or even raising Rory's child, as Rory finds her way in the world?

I'd watch another sequel, but it seems to me that a galaxy of stars would have to align to make it happen.

Hubby and I have recently had to bring my MIL here to live with us, and in order for us to have something to do other than stare at each other (her mind is slipping pretty badly at this point) I've been playing four or five episodes of Gilmore Girls every day. My G-D I had forgotten how annoying Max is, and especially Max and Lorelai together. For as much as we've complained over the years about her immaturity when it comes to relationships, he is just as bad.

On the upside, though, we're in Season 2 right now and the deepening friendship and genuine affection between Lorelai and Luke is just delightful to revisit. Plus, I get to have Jess on my screen again, which is fabulous.

I've gotta say, listening to MIL's reactions to some of the characters, and scenes, is absolutely hilarious. I've no idea if she's ever seen GG before (even if she has, it's possible she doesn't remember) so it's all fresh and new to her. So far here's what I've picked up --

Lorelai only thinks of herself. (I'm pretty sure she's stated this at least once per every couple of episodes. Heh.)

Emily is hoity toity, and also thinks she's all that.

Richard is very much my way or the highway, about everything.

Gran is a snob.

The Chilton bunch all think they're better than Rory.

Taylor loves to go on and on and on.

Babette, Miss Patty, and Michel all get a lot of incredulous 'WOW's during their scenes.

Similarly, Kirk gets a lot of 'Good grief's and 'What can I say's.

She's also had some pretty bizarre takes on a few scenes. Once she thought Taylor and Luke were arguing because Luke just wanted a week off work. She also thought Francie was asking Rory for a kiss (instead of a truce) during that stupid S3 storyline, which almost made me choke laughing. She had something really wacky to say about one of Lane and Mrs. Kim's scenes, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was right now.

Farewell, My Pet is up next. We're in the home stretch! I was trying to remember if I've even watched S7 more than once before now. Maybe? But I definitely do not remember most of it other than the major scenes and storylines. And I will NOT be subjecting myself to the Revival. I just refuse.

It may be petty of me, but Mitchum's reaction to Rory actually thinking that the only reason he was making Logan move to London and actually learn how to WORK was to get Logan away from her cracked me the hell up. Honey. Not everything is about you. I know that's hard to believe, but you gotta come to terms with it.

I'm pretty sure people remarked on this at the time, but good grief how very selfish was it of Lorelai to make a FOUR YEAR OLD wait to "do" Christmas until her grown ass sister got home from vacation?! I wasn't paying enough attention to remember if it was days or weeks, but it was a long damn time. Utterly ridiculous.

I know Lorelai and Chris had to give it one last go so everyone could finally get closure about them, but good Lord once they finally got together for more than a couple of days their chemistry was so lackluster it was like watching effing paint dry every time they were onscreen.

I feel like a therapist should really do more than encourage their clients to be all 'It's my way or the highway if I'm going to be happy in this relationship!' TJ would have given Lorelai better advice than Lynnie did. Jeepers.

They never said it but I hoped Gigi was still in France for Christmas and didn't come home until afterwards. I really hope and want that to be the case. They did go to drop her off for a long time.

I agree at laughing Rory assuming she's the reason Mitchum moved Logan.

I hate Christopher. I get them wanting to do one last try since they wanted to do it seasons earlier. But I agree there was no chemistry and really nothing happened. Rory was upset about the marriage which Lorelai knew right away but Christopher of course didn't. She talks to Lorelai and not Christopher. Rory should have been mad and be out with it. At Christopher who never did anything with her or was their for her and everything he put her and Lorelai through. At Lorelai for all the years telling Rory why she wouldn't marry Christopher (which were valid) only to change her mind and do it on a whim when Rory had graduated.

Lorelai suddenly a stepmother to a four year old. Would Christopher hand off all the raising to her? Probably. How did Rory really feel about her room going to Gigi? Gigi who still stayed with Grandma Hayden a lot who still refused to acknowledge Rory. Or Lorelai. Did she know they got married? Did she not care? Emily and Richard finally getting what they wanted. But none of that mattered. It was boring. It could have been so much better.

I blame Season 7 on ASP getting her panties in a bunch over not getting a Season 8. Amy and Dan had nothing to do with Season 7. Amy claims they didn't even watch it.

The whole Season 7 has a different vibe. Because of all the fast-talking dialogue of the first 6 seasons, the scripts were twice as long as normal for an hour show. I think the Season 7 writers did not catch the essence of the show. I can feel the difference.

Yeah, it does. Parts of it I really like (S7 Logan is by far my favorite) but parts of it are just trying too hard and it shows.

But at least the writers weren't trying to sabotage their own show (*cough* S6 ASP) so for that I am grateful.

Probably for the best. Your MIL would think you slipped her a mickey. 😅

Oh, that's a good point! I hope so too.
