That's unfortunate about Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates because I thought it was hilarious.

I think Mike and Dave made more than their projected 12 million so it did pretty well, especially for the small budget.

Mike and Dave is the best opening weekend for Zac Efron in four years outside of the Neighbors movies.

I'm just thrilled a Whit Stillman Jane Austen adaptation has earned 4x the production budget while Jesse Eisenberg's latest has fallen $30 million short of its. Christmas in July!

Whit Stillman really, really needed this. I was so upset when his comeback movie Damsels in Distress just fizzled and only made a million dollars. Two flops in a row and I think he would have been scared off from ever trying another movie again.

I guess we can count on another Purge movie. And will that international box office give us Now You See Me 3?

Kevin Hart really knows how to pick his projects.

There are already plans for a Chinese spin-off for the Now You See Me franchise. I also wouldn't be totally surprised by a Purge: Brexit or some young British filmmaker tweaking the concept just enough to make an "original" indie movie along those lines.

I'm glad Central Intelligence is making a decent amount of money internationally.

What a budget difference. Does Illumination do all their animation overseas? Is $200 mil normal for a Pixar movie?

I haven't seen either, but wondering - do both movies have an animated short before the feature? I've been told to see Dory just to see the short.

I'm happy for Central Intelligence too.

But The BFG.  $64 million after seven weeks with a $140 million budget.  Ouch.  Am I the only one who thinks BFG stands for Big Fucking Giant?

I think the BFG should have debuted around Thanksgiving rather than the summer, especially with Dory coming out. Kind of how Mr.Popper's Penguins tanked partially because it opened during summer.

Yes, Illumination does their animation in France, where they get subsidies, they will reuse backgrounds and don't spend so much time on perfecting the little details like animating the fur on animals, which cuts time/costs. The budget for Finding Dory is pretty typical for Pixar.

  • Love 2

I've seen both movies and the difference in the visuals is striking. Dory is a treat for the eyes, with vibrant colours and details that are worth taking the time to look at. Secret Life of Pets doesn't look bad, but there's nothing special about it visually in most of the shots. (A few of the NYC shots are stunners, but they're the exception rather than the rule.) It's fine. When I look back at the animation of some of the movies I watched as a kid, it can be pretty rough and I never minded so it seems clear that Illumination wants to put their effort behind fun stories/jokes/voice casts and let the animation be secondary.

He really does. Central Intelligence and Secret Life of Pets will probably make him the biggest star of the summer

There is a Minions Short before Secret Life of Pets. It's cute but not very memorable. The Dory one is amazing and so beautiful. The first few shots look like real life with an HD camera.

Well it just opened in the US and I think it's been out for a while overseas.

The latest Ice Age is in its fourth weekend of global release but the franchise has been more popular overseas for a while. This domestic opening weekend is also the weakest of the series, by far:

Ice Age (2002)   $46,312,454 (OW) | $176,387,405 (US) | $383.3M (WW)
Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006)   $68,033,544 (OW) | $195,330,621 (US) | $660.9M (WW)

Huh? It's made 116 million domestic. It cost 144 million. Do you mean worldwide gross?

I think a sequel will happen, but it'll probably be filmed in Toronto doubling in for New York City. Or possibly Pittsburgh.

You mean domestic is the only one that counts when it comes to budget? I guess I meant worldwide gross then.

Nah, it doesn't, although from what I understand, studios only get a percentage of worldwide gross. They get more of domestic gross.

I know she's been concentrating on the kids, but what in the hell has happened to Jennifer Garner's career?

She's over 40 now, and she never really established herself as a legitimate and consistent box office and/or critical performer. So I'm guessing this really is the best she can do.

I really thought after "Juno" she was going to establish herself as a critically acclaimed supporting actress in indie dramas/comedies, but man we were wrong on that count.

The expected implosion of Suicide Squad really does seem to sum up this summer. Other than "Pets" or "Finding Dory", nothing really ignited the box office as a sustained hit and it's all kind of been underwhelming. At the theater I work at, it's definitely felt slower than last summer was.

A 135 mil opening weekend is an implosion? However, the numbers might be inflated by the increased costs of IMAX, 3D, and 4D showings.

I think the reported budget may be an under-estimate, plus the studio had to have spent a crap-ton on marketing.  If it doesn't drop significantly next week, it'll be a success, but if it does (and the drop from Friday to Saturday should concern the studio because that reflects less than ideal word of mouth), it'll go the way of Batman vs Superman.  Implosion may not be the best description, though.

I'm surprised that thing didn't go straight to DVD/streaming.

Hilary's America had a twelve million dollar budget?

I hadn't heard of Nine Lives until last Friday. It feels like something that would've been a hit in the late 90s, early aughts.

Obama's America made $33 million in 2012. I guess they hoped the Hillary version would do similar business.

At least Ghostbusters made back its budget.

I don't know what the studio was thinking, to spend that much on it, but that's the story of the 2016 box office, along with ill-advised sequels.

Has Star Trek Beyond had its full global release? That overseas number seems low.

“There are only so many available dollars in the marketplace,” said Kevin Goetz, president of consulting firm Screen Engine. “These big movies can’t all work at the level that the studios need them to in order to justify their tremendous budgets.”

This summer was all Disney.

Quote

This year’s five most popular films account for 30% of the total domestic box office. At the end of last year that figure was 22%, a record at the time. The inevitable result is a smaller pool of moviegoers left to see everything else.

The results of that trend haven’t been shared equally. Walt Disney Co., whose movie business now focuses almost exclusively on franchise pictures, has grossed over $2 billion domestically this year, 81% more than its nearest competitor, 21st Century Fox Inc.’s Twentieth Century Fox. Disney has released 2016’s four highest-grossing movies world-wide—“Finding Dory,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “The Jungle Book” and “Zootopia.”

This summer was all Disney.

Here's international release info for Star Trek Beyond. It has several European and South American countries to go but the franchise tends to make more of its money domestically than, say, Marvel or Transformers.

The year has proven pretty top heavy so far, though I think the summer has actually improved the balance a bit compared to the winter/spring. Top movies of 2016 (US release date in parentheses):

1. Finding Dory   $476,815,060  (6/17)
