Love Simon had another decent hold and it's now at 31/32 million. Good! At this rate it's going to hit mid/high 30's by the end of it's run, perhaps as high as low 40's. It's at the very least going to do a 2x multiple of its production budget,.

I'm curious what the advertising budget on this film was though. I was seeing promos for this thing everywhere! I'm hoping it did well enough to be considered a success though, because I'd love to see Hollywood continue to break their usual mold and take chances on commercial films.

Box-Office Milestone: 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle' Becomes Biggest-Ever Sony Title in U.S.:

Quote

The movie accomplished the milestone this week after narrowly surpassing the original

Spider-Man, which grossed $403.7 million at the box office in 2002. The Jumanji reboot, which was released Dec. 20, finished Tuesday with a domestic total of $403.71 million. The film is all but done with its theatrical run after coming out on DVD earlier this month.

Obviously, the original Spider-Man sold many more tickets, but Jumanji performed far better than anyone ever expected.

WB reported additional grosses for Dunkirk during the week and its lifetime gross is now $190,068,280, which is more than Interstellar ($188,020,017).

How is the Greatest Showman still in theaters?

It's wrapping up domestically, being on DVD/streaming now and only making $225K in 209 theaters this weekend. Internationally, it's still in 14 markets and increased over last week in Australia. Staggered releases help movies make money for a long time period of time. The Boss Baby just got released theatrically in Japan within the last couple of months!

Yeah. I can definitely see The Greatest Showman working well for a foreign market. Glad to see it's done so well- I'm not the biggest fan, but it was a risk and it's great to see that pay off.

Ready Player One- I had some problems with it, but overall I'm happy that it's doing okay. It's domestic cume isn't going to come anywhere near what it needs to in order to recoup it's budget domestically, but it seems like it's going to play pretty well overseas. I really thought it was going to flop pretty hard. I'm hoping that Spielberg might look at Olivia Cooke for other roles.

Because it's awesome!

Haha, I work in a cinema and people are still coming to watch it, who haven't seen it before, despite being released 19 weeks ago (on Boxing Day) and the fact we've had it on for 18 weeks of that 19. We've also had people in to see it who've seen it multiple times - I think 6 is the record that I've heard.

Wow, guess I'm going to have to see A Quiet Place.

I'm happy for John Krasinski because, like Jordan Peele, he should be able to bank a whole lot of $$$ and just do whatever he wants to do in the future and not worry about being cast for anything.

Heh, he was already there. John is not the breadwinner in that family.

What's blowing my mind right now is that if you look at the list of the worldwide top-grossing films of 2018, two of the top five are Chinese-made.  I know the year's not half over, the totals for Infinity War aren't in yet, nor are some of the other big releases, but that's proof positive of why the studios are adapting the way they are.

I remember seeing one in the top five last year almost until the end of the year when the holiday releases came out.

Avengers: Infinity War sets new all-time domestic and global opening weekend records—and it doesn't open in China for another two weeks! Most box office reporters/watchers believe Disney is lowballing the weekend estimate, given its huge Saturday ($83 million, also a record) and expect it to jump $5-10 million with the final numbers tomorrow. Where could it end up?

Quote

As of now, the most frontloaded $200 million+ opener is Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which earned $621m from a $220m launch last December. A comparative 2.8x multiplier (which would be great at any other time save for December and comparable to the first Thor from May of 2011) would give Infinity War a $700m cume. With school still in session for a month and less “never seen anything like this before” buzz, the MCU spectacle will likely be more frontloaded than your standard $200 million+ opener. A run comparable to Civil War (2.27x), Iron Man 3 (2.35x) or Avengers: Age of Ultron (2.4x) gets Infinity War to a total between $567m and $600m domestic.

Will general audiences treat it like an event or rather like just this year’s MCU Avengers summer kick-off flick? With an opening this huge, even legs like Iron Man 2 (2.43x) gets Avengers 3 to $608 million domestic. I’m not comfortable at this early juncture even speculating about a 3x weekend multiplier (which would put it past Avatar’s $760m total), but “standard” MCU legs (2.4x to 2.8x) gets it between $600m and $700m, so there is a lot of wiggle room. We’ll find out over the next week or so whether Avengers: Infinity War can go to infinity and beyond.

April 27–29, 2018 Estimates:

1 (N)  Avengers: Infinity War   $250,000,000 | 4,474 Theaters | $55,878 Avg. | $300-400M Budget* | $250,000,000

Disney, as a studio, has already crossed a billion in domestic gross and it's not even May yet. And with Incredibles 2, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Wreck-It Ralph 2 and Mary Freaking Poppins (Notice I didn't even mention Solo) yet to come for 2018, Disney's conquest of Earth continues unabated.

What's even more remarkable about Infinity War blowing past The Force Awakens is that I remember the latter having theaters doing screenings 24 hours a day.  How many more repeat viewers could they squeeze in with early AM choices?

I'll be interested to see what the one week total is.  Granted, I don't always check out theaters with reserved seating when I go to movies myself in the middle of the week, but I'm seeing this again on Tuesday morning, so I looked at our really nice theater to see what their matinee price was and all the best seats in the house, and then some, were sold out.  This was for Tuesday at 11:30am!  This is also the first time since I've started buying advanced tickets at our reserved seating theater that I bought them the first day they went on sale and when I got the time to do so (right after lunch), all the best seats were taken for all three opening weekend evenings.

Infinity War actuals:

That's going to be a tough record to beat.

It does often seem that way, but the record inevitably gets broken in 4-5 years at the most.

I thought Avengers: Infinity War would have a bigger opening than Black Panther but end up with a lower domestic total, though that was before this weekend. It seems very well liked by fans but there was a huge rush factor. Sellouts cause spillover that lead to lower drops in the first week, but Marvel sequels can be frontloaded overall. The drop next weekend will tell the story.

If the estimates hold, Avengers: Infinity War will have the second-best second weekend of all time, yet the amount is a little less than a million ahead of Black Panther's second weekend. Infinity War got off to a bigger start, so it's showing signs of the typical Marvel sequel frontloadedness as time goes on. Star Wars: The Last Jedi was the first $200M+ opener not to earn a 3x multiplier and it looks like Infinity War will be the second. Granted, there are only six $200M+ openers ever, but four of them have ended up earning more than three times their opening weekends: Marvel's The Avengers (3.01x), Jurassic World (3.12x), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (3.78x) and Black Panther (3.43x so far).

I know that's hardly a boffo result for Overboard, but for a small budgeted movie with bad reviews that I saw no advertising for (granted, I am a cord-cutter who only really sees ads on public transit), that isn't a terrible number.

Some Overboard audience stats (Deadline):

Quote

This one was smartly dated to sync with the Cinco de Mayo holiday. PostTrak reports a Latino turnout of 41%, with the demo giving the pic an 83% positive. Four stars overall for the pic and a shiny A- CinemaScore. Overboard‘s opening is higher than the Mexican star’s April 28 release last year, How to Be a Latin Lover, which opened to $12.2M and yielded a 2.6 multiple for a final $32.1M.

Quote

Originally, Overboard was scheduled on April 13. But when Infinity War moved around, [Lionsgate] took the title to this weekend. There was some risk and upside going on Cinco de Mayo: It’s a big holiday weekend with friends and family. But business was up yesterday, and LG is hoping that Sunday will see a further boost, as Hispanic audiences make their way to the cinema after church.

RelishMix considers the social buzz on Overboard to be good, with a social media universe of 120M above the genre’s typical online reach of 115M and video materials going viral at 11 to 1. “Many Hispanic fans are calling Derbez out as a primary reason to go see Overboard,” says RelishMix, and he has a great reach with over 31M followers. But Eva Longoria also is a big social magnet here at 18M+ followers, followed by Anna Faris, who counts 2.6M. Females are the majority at Overboard, making up 59% of the crowd, per PostTrak. Women over 25 at 45% give the pic a 77% positive.

The studio (Lionsgate) is the same one that releases Tyler Perry movies, so they likely used similar promotion strategies, with the advertising heavily geared to outlets frequented by the primary fanbase.  I did see an occasional ad for it on Lifetime/HGTV sort of channels but nothing compared to what seemed like an onslaught for I Feel Pretty.

And now Marvel has two movies in the top ten at the same time. And if AIW can stay in the top ten until 7/6/18, Marvel will have a movie in the top 10 from February through July-August. (Assuming that Ant-Man and the Wasp makes the top ten). How often does that happen? (For the purpose of this question I'm treating Disney, Lucasfilm, Pixar, and Marvel as different studios).

That's a good question, and very tricky. Among studios as a whole, it's probably not that uncommon, but with franchises, it's a harder feat. Most only release one movie a year, if that, so barring Titanic legs, they can only stay in the top 10 for so long. Then there are Franchises vs. Brands! The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a franchise while Box Office Mojo considers Marvel Comics a brand. So, any X-Men count under The Marvel Comics brand but not as MCU movies, Spider-Man: Homecoming is MCU but not the earlier Spider-Man movies, and so on.  Anyway, I don't think Infinity War will be able to hang on in the Top 10 until July; it has a lot more up-front demand and competition than Black Panther did.

Disney managed an April-to-June run once with their Live Action Re-Imaginings: The Jungle Book entered the Top 10 on April 15, 2016, was still there when Alice: Through the Looking Glass came out in May, and A:TTLG had its last Top 10 Sunday on June 26, 2016.

ETA: It looks like at least one Star Wars re-release managed to be in the weekend Top 10 from January 31, 1997 to April 6, 1997, and sometimes two or more at once.

Deadpool 2 doesn't quite reach the heights of the first film's opening weekend ($132,434,639), but that was boosted by Valentine's Day and a holiday Monday (Presidents' Day) deflating the Sunday drop.  The release of Black Panther on Blu-Ray/DVD finally pushes it out of the Top 10.  Disney cares about box office milestones less than some other studios, but I can't imagine that it won't stay in theaters long enough to get past $700 million.

Deadpool came out during a really quiet time at the box office, as well.

I also feel like a lot of the people who accidentally took their kids to see the first one learned their lesson. LOL.

I'm not too surprised it was front-loaded- I worked at my cinema on Saturday night and everyone seemed to comment that Saturday night wasn't as busy as Friday was.

I Feel Pretty looks like it might hit the 50 million mark, while Overboard will probably make it to the 40 million mark. That seems to be pretty good for current romantic comedies.

For many movies, $83 million would be an amazing opening weekend or even a fine total, but for a Star Wars movie...it's under the worst projections thrown out, going into the weekend. No one expected Solo to reach the heights of a main trilogy movie, but this is looking to be the first box office flop of the SW universe. The international numbers are even worse. Lucasfilm maybe should have waited to see how Solo would do before announcing such firm plans for a Boba Fett spin-off next?

They should've stuck to the Christmas schedule, but I guess Disney gave priority to Mary Poppins Returns. They probably made the right call.

The original MP adjusts to $716 million, which granted, doesn't mean it would make that sort of money were it released today, but even Savings Mr. Banks, a non-musical drama about negotiating for the Poppins movie rights, made $83 million domestic in this decade! That's really mind-boggling to me, even if the character is obviously beloved. I guess in another 20-30 years we can expect the film version of how Spielberg failed to win over JK Rowling and Warner Bros ended up with Harry Potter? Anyway, Disney's high hopes for Mary Poppins Returns are more than just financial. Per Deadline's reportage from this year's Oscar night (awards season can never start too soon in Hollywood, I guess);

A top Disney exec told me flat out that they would be campaigning not only Black Panther for the big prize but also the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns (from director Rob Marshall), which he was raving about, particularly for star Emily Blunt. who he says knocks it out of the park in the role for which Julie Andrews already has an Oscar. Lin-Manuel Miranda co-stars. and he says there are a lot of great new songs in it as well. The teaser trailer broke in the first segment of last night’s show, but we have to wait until Christmas to see if the film lives up to Disney’s early prediction. The first Mary Poppins wowed Oscar in 1964, when it received 13 nominations, winning five but losing Best Picture to My Fair Lady.

After the director drama and shooting so much of the film over again, I was surprised Solo didn't move to early August, to give it a bit more time away from The Last Jedi and for there to be time to cut better trailers/ads . Maybe they should have just stuck with the Lord/Miller version? It probably also would have flopped by Star Wars standards, but on a much lower budget, at least.

The original Star Wars, ANH, came out 25 May 1977. All the others until TFA came out around then too. And Star Wars loves its traditions. If it hadn't been for that, maybe Solo would have been moved.
