Nothing's changed, as studio accounting even allowed Warner Bros to claim Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix "lost" $167 million despite earning $938.2 million in theaters. Yet curiously, WB has gone on to make 4 more movies in the Wizarding World universe (so far). When studios actually lose money on potential franchises, they don't make sequels. No wonder Hollywood power players think they can get away with anything, in so many walks of life. With The Founder, I think Weinstein was trying to save face, especially after the release date kept being shuffled and the Oscar nomination hopes weren't going to pan out. Its box office total so far ($12,484,543 domestic, almost $20M worldwide) isn't earth-shattering, but with a budget that's "only" $7 million, it didn't seem like a flop, either. I haven't seen it, but wondered if $7M was a bit low, given the star coming off a career hot streak, plus recreating sets/costumes/cars of 50-60 years ago. I just figured that maybe Keaton took a pay cut and the scale was small with limited shots of extras, to keep down costs. The news that it actually cost $25 million explains a lot. If any studio head had the nerve to pretend his movie cost 3x less than it actually did, it would be Harvey! thuganomics85 March 6, 2017 Share March 6, 2017 Not to mention I can see Baby Boss doing well for families and kids, and maybe even that sci-fi movie, Life (with Jake Gyllenhall, Ryan Reynolds, and Rebecca Ferguson), could be a sleeper, if the reviews are solid and it doesn't suck (have no idea, really.) On the flipside though, I can easily see Ghost in the Shell bombing, thanks to all the controversy, weird trailers, and the source material probably not being as well known compared to the more Western comics. If it does manage to do well though, that would certainly be a boon for Scarlett Johansson's drawling power. It really does feel like this entire year though has been stacked with big films though. I was surprised when I found out The Fate of the Furious is coming out April 14th, because it so feels like an early May movie. It will probably do better then a lot of the summer blockbusters too (Dom betraying his "family" for Furiosa?! The Rock and Jason Statham breaking out of prison using just their fist and feet?! And with the two Marvel movies and the next Star Wars installment coming, it looks like another banner year for The Mouse House. Now the only possible blip on the horizon is the new Pirates movie. Straightforward action and car chases transcend language barriers and also play really well in China, where the latest XXX has made more than half of its overseas total. It seems like it was pretty critic-proof. I was also surprised. I was even more surprised by a few of the reviews where that said that despite the movie being stupid, they'd enjoyed themselves. I don't think it will be a mega hit, but hopefully it will do well enough in the long run. There were some imperfections, but I liked the cast enough to at least see where a potential sequel would take it. Beauty and the Beast is killing it! Didn't enjoy it as much as everyone else seems to be judging from the responses, but more power to it. Life's underwhelming returns really highlights, in my opinion, how much star power doesn't matter anymore. Pretty much every advertisement I've seen for it was all about Jake Gyllenhall and Ryan Reynolds, and apparently not many cared. Of course, I'm sure they (and Rebecca Ferguson) will be fine. Still wanting Hiroyuki Sanada to get a bigger break in the States. 1 Link to comment

A CG animated release has to be pretty bad to outright bomb with kids, plus the trailer killed whenever I saw it before other movies (even Hidden Figures) so I knew it had appeal to adults, too. The ads didn't spell it out, but it's Alec Baldwin as the voice of a blond, egomaniacal infant and, well, I'll just say there's an audience that enjoys seeing him in that sort of role. methodwriter85 April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 I'm kind of surprised Power Rangers fell so hard. Everyone I've talked to about it has been pretty positive. Disney has to be pissed they didn't get the triple crown with Beauty and the Beast. 50 Shades Darker has officially closed at 114 million domestic, down 37 million from the first film. 50 Shades Freed probably will top somewhere around 60 or 70 million at this rate. Good thing Universal filmed the movie with Darker and kept the budget reasonable. Now THAT'S how you avoid a Divergent situation! 2 Link to comment

Ghost in the Shell is out in China this weekend, then Fast 8 the week after, and the latter is much more aligned with the taste of the moviegoers there. Maybe some other international markets will go wild for it but Deadline predicts GitS will lose $60 million-plus. I think Power Rangers played to the fans who were pumped to see it right away and not so much anybody else. Disney as a studio isn't as hung up on box office milestones as some of the others, but there were probably some "Three weekends at #1: go see the movie sweeping the world!" ads all ready to go that had to be scrapped. I don't know if the dropoff from Fifty Shades Darker to Fifty Shades Freed will be as harsh as the first to the second; the people who stuck with the series after Fifty Shades of Grey probably like the "romance" of it all and will want to see the story to its conclusion. The Powers Rangers shouldn't have been a PG-13 movie. It should have been kept a kid's movie, I think. For whatever reason, in recent years, it seems like teen movies are dropping off in popularity big-time. Kid movies and Marvel movies seem to be the only guaranteed smash hits right now. Lionsgate needs to think long and hard about their sequel plans. I'm guessing Freed will hit somewhere around 70-80 million domestic. I do think the enthusiasm for the series has pretty much dissipated to the more hard-core fans. Link to comment
