S02.E13: Fish In The Dish

Recommended Posts

So Phil is sterile. Not surprised. So he lies to Carol that Todd's positive test was his. Again, not surprised. Once again, I gotta say: Tandy, you dumb. But at least he showed regret and apologized. So glad that Season 2 Tandy gets this over with in one episode and not stretch it out for the rest of the season.

Next Week:

Mike is back!

Gasp.

I thought this episode was hilarious.  Or at least I laughed out loud a lot and I'm not really a laugh-out-louder-when-alone kind of person.

Carol's masturbatorium and empornment was the kind of weirdness I love about this show.  And even though Todd was being awful, I giggled when he kissed Erica.  And I'm glad they didn't bother with keeping Mike away for too long, although I was kind of surprised Phil had zero reaction to seeing it was his brother who was alive.

Yes, Tandy is stupid. Todd was determined to give him a run for his money though. Of course secretly hooking up with Gail and Melissa was a bad idea. Then when he finally does come clean, he suggests he should continue hooking up with both of them (maybe all of them?). The whole incident does illustrate a key difference between Todd and Tandy: Tandy would have schemed to try and set up a "big love" arrangement, Todd just bungles his way through the suggestion. Both are stupid although they express it in their own unique ways.

So Todd is fertile and hooking up with multiple women. What are the odds Melissa is already pregnant?

Carol wants a baby and Tandy likely can't have one (unless Carol does some more studying and becomes some sort of fertility expert). Todd was looking like the only option but now Mike showed up. This is all slightly creepy territory.

And of course Tandy punches his brother in the nuts when he meets him -- and will probably try to kill him once Mike starts hooking up.

Tandy is still just a dick.  An unfunny dick.  And enough with the beard already -- it ain't funny either.

Oh, and all that soda would have gone flat a long time ago -- the carbon dioxide in the soda is a key part of the mentos reaction, so no it wouldn't work at all if it was 3 years old or so (plastic bottles go flat way faster than cans).

I thought this was an extremely funny episode, and can't wait to see Sudeikis's interactions with the group next week. I'm guessing Carol will want his sperm to get pregnant or some lunacy like that to keep it in the family.

My favorite part was Tandy's masturbation montage. "Where'd you crash, Amelia? Just tell me!"

I would imagine any intimate scenes between Jason Sudeikis and January Jones might be kind of awkward, given their past dating history and the fact that he's now married with a kid.

Edit: I guess he and Olivia aren't actually married yet; come on Jason, put a ring on it already

I really enjoy that this show is like no other out there. And this episode was brought the weirdness well.

The character development has been great. We know that Todd's promescuity comes not from a selfish place, but wanting to feel like he's helping out others. Hence the semen cup with the note being a nice touch. It's evidence that he's not doing it in some misogynistic provider sense. He genuinely wants to help everyone, probably helping to resolve his guilt over the bacon incident. Tandy has developed genuine empathy, something that his "live for himself" attitude did not provide. He's slow to realize it, but it's there. Melissa can allow herself to feel vulnerable, after needing to seem like she was in control of everything, mostly as a defense mechanism against the craziness around her. Gale is moving on from her own sense of security that "Gordon" provided. And Erica (though light in this episode) appears to be on board with Motherhood, and giving the first birth of the "new" generation.

Erica also had one of the best lines in the episode, "I didn't realize it was a take-a-number situation."

I'm hoping next weeks episode chronicles Mike's travels from Miami to Tucson to Malibu, to change it up again.

FOX's standards policy to not allow showing any 'movement' during sex acts (which is why the sex scenes on the show are just two people lying on top of each other talking and not bouncing up and down) just makes everything more hilarious. Tandy sitting still and screaming was great.

I think Carol was "moving" way early in season 1 during the sex act (she was on top of Tandy).

Laughed when Phil hit Mike in the nuts, like "you'll be sterile also", like they want Todd to be the only fertile male on the Planet. But I bet Mike is also sterile for being too long in space...

It seemed like Carol recognized Mike, but she hasn't seen a photo of him, has she? Maybe she was just excited that there was another person.

I don't like to nitpick on a show like this where reality is not something to measure this by, but it looked like Mike was too far from Phil for Phil to recognize him. Plus, when the two of them DID really see each other, I would expect the reactions to be incredulous, at least from Mike since Phil was so pissed at him for ... I was going to say pissed at him for punching him in the nuts as a kid, but it wasn't Mike who did that. Wasn't it friends? And didn't we see in a flashback that Phil was the bully in their relationship?

Anyway, all that aside, I did enjoy the ep. The masturbatorium that Carol created was hilarious. Loved the mural. I was wondering who the one lady was -- Thatcher. I really love Phil and Carol together. He's so sweet and accommodating to her now. And of course Carol is crazy funny.

I wonder if Todd thought he was donating to impregnate Carol, thereby "hooking up" with her too. I guess not, since he didn't admit to it in his big confession. But still. He gets around.

That's another thing I forgot to mention that I loved and makes sense considering Todd's accommodating nature in this ep but I adored how he just said "yes" to Phil when Phil asked for his sperm. No questions asked, just a plea to give him some recovery time.

well, that was a little ... bizarre. Do over-the-counter sperm test kits really exist? as a long-time infertility vet, I know that sperm needs to be centrifuged and cleaned to be counted and motility checked. also, newsflash, Phil-Tandy: your sperm will turn into water if you do it that often. You have to wait 2 days between sperm tests!!

LOL @ Todd trying to split himself into three and trying to dig himself out of his hole.

I need to know how Mike found his way to Malibu. and way to make the last normal man left on earth sterile too, Phil!

Maybe those kits do exist, remember they are like in the year 2020 or something like that..

The year is 2025, to be exact.  The virus first hit in 2019 and wiped out the entire population of the earth by 2021.  By the time shown in the pilot, Phil had been the lone survivor (or so he thought) for two years (making it 2023 then), and then he and Carol went on their honeymoon in DC and didn't catch up to everyone in Malibu until sometime in mid-late 2024. Because New Phil died just before New Year's Eve 2024, that now makes it sometime in early 2025.

yeah but manufacture of those kits wouldve ended in 2020'ish. which, by the way, is only four years away from now. and they're not beginning to develop them yet, so I dont think they'd be widely use by the fictional 2020...

Another really good episode, the choice of music for the show is spot on, Tandy seeing Mike in the distance was quite moving and I think you would recognise your brother from a very long way off, quite apt that he hit him in the `groin`, typical Tandy. I can not wait to see how Mike fits into the group, he is bound to attract some female interest and that could (hopefully!) annoy the other men. Todd`s free love idea is dead in the water now all right.
