S02.E11: Fifty Shades Of Grey Matter

Recommended Posts

As an author of erotic romance, I can attest to the inaccuracy of Liv's reaction to the brain of the week. If they had portrayed her in sweats, with her hair unwashed, worrying about deadlines and writer's block, we'd be getting somewhere. Having sex is not the same as thinking about ways for fictional people to have sex. We're writers like all other writers, except we probably make more money than, say, poets.

 Oh, and Free Minor!

My sister in law's a romance writer. My mind kind of boggled at the idea people would think my brother couldn't get it up. And then I barfed a little at being forced to have that thought.

Yeah, I'm a writer and I write romance in my books - sex too - and it does not involve fantasising about every person you meet. Writing sex and romance is like every other writing - chained to a desk in comfortable clothes and an IV drip of caffeine.

But I think this was less about the writing and more about the marriage. I mean, she didn't actually write this from her imagination but stole somebody else's story and made it into her own and she did that because she was deeply dissatisfied with her husband who turned out to be kind of an asshole. He was clearly more interested in how people perceived him than who he really was.

But you're right - being romantically and sexually unfulfilled tends to inspire you to read romance rather than write it because writing requires some kind of inspiration But hey, this is a show about zombies so...

I was just amused by an episode called 50 Shades about a boring, uncreative woman with an unsatisfying life who stole someone else's story and wrote porn about it. Because, well.

So Lowell and Major are real pretty. It's not like we're spoiling for eye candy on iZombie. But Drake? He is another level. My God. Like, I know I'm being manipulated and I don't even care. He's so pretty, you guys. It took me forever to get through this episode because I kept rewinding. And Ben Lawson, too? Thank you, casting directors.

They had a lot of fun with this episode. I loved the Kristen Bell audiobook reading.

Lol at Major's parkour.

Blaine is so great for the show I was rooting against Babineaux and the FBI Agent the whole time. Also, in show logic, what will happen if Blaine reverts to zombie form while arrested/in prison without brains?

I didn't like Liv "roofie-ing" someone.

I feel like that was a joke that obviously didn't play well for everyone. I don't think she intentionally gave him the librarian brains without telling him to trick/coerce him into sex. I think the writers thought that line was a good joke and then sidestepped the consent issue by having her put a stop to it.

I'd guess he cracks open his cellmate's head, eats his brains, and gets taken down by a headshot from a guard, but that would be pretty anticlimactic.

Meanwhile, I am attempting to take some solace in knowing that the cops found Minor and probably gave him back to the victim's family. I'm getting a cat this weekend. Minor is one of the names in play for it.

From what I understand, the Bill Cosby thing is different as he was allegedly purposefully drugging people with the intent of rendering them incapacitated to accomplish sexual conduct without consent.

I should have been more specific. I was thinking of the earlier allegations. Entirely different than the more recent stuff for which he was arrested.

My heart broke seeing Minor framed in the window of that bus.  I actually said (out loud to no one) "Minor! Nooooo!" I may have even let out a whimper.

I screamed "DON'T DO THAT, I'LL TAKE HIM!".

This seems like a good time to say I have no feelings about the poor horribly murdered innocent people on the autopsy table. But MINOR. ON THE BUS. ALONE.  NOOOOOOOO

This was a really fun episode. The case of the week? Meh. But the brain of the week? Loved it! Yes, I understand perfectly well that eating a writers' brain is not going to turn a zombie into a character from that writer's book. Especially if that character is actually based on a real person, who has no trouble usually acting normal. But please don't expect me to care. This was very, very funny, and holy crap was the female cast cranking up the sexiness this week.

I finally managed to watch this. It was fun.

I can't stand the way Major ditched poor Minor on the city bus. I can't help hoping that basset boy shows up on Major's doorstep because that was just a horrid thing for Major to do.

Like a couple of others here, I'm a writer. I don't write erotica or romance but horror. Clearly, the writers of the show either know nothing about the current state of publishing or they hand-waved the details and figured the viewers wouldn't know or care.

Drake (Greg Finley) can stick around as long as he likes. He can also wear as little as he likes. Yes, I'm shallow.

David Anders is also fun to watch always. Who can blame Peyton for hitting that? Not smart, not professional, but totally understandable.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the "Real Genius" reference at the autopsy. Or maybe I'm just too big of a fan of that movie.

This week's episode and Arrow made me look up parkour.

Also, kind of a twist that even "Blaine DeBeers" was an alias.

They also made a "Weird Science" reference when Blaine was hitting on Peyton.

Bozzio's smooth "fake high five, steal your coffee" move hasn't gotten any love here. I almost had to pause the video to finish laughing. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters.

So the GPS tracker was in the tag or collar, so it was really unnecessary for Major to ditch Minor after all? He really should have just thawed out Minor's owner, let him go, and given his dog back. It's not like he could have gone to the cops saying that he had been kidnapped and frozen for months. Having him show up alive again probably would have thrown off the investigation, too.

Major did just leave the dog on the bus. I guess we know from Clive that the police learned of the dog's whereabouts and can presume that he's OK. But seriously, fuck Major for that.

I'd predicted at some point we'd get full-on nympho Liv. I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed, since if they are going to go this direction, they owe us a little more cheesecake.

I didn't realize that the actor who played Drake on Star-Crossed is also named Drake on this show.

Any idea how the meal-of-the-week was supposed to relate to the brain-of-the-week?

Was the (first) meal a stuffed poblano?

I think it was a stuffed pepper (green or jalapeno).  When she first held it up, it looked a bit like a leaf (tying to hemlock leaves).

Except Major was already a major suspect in Clive's eyes. That would add just one. more. connection. to the already pretty-connected meat-cute/murder/blaine saga. Why would he put himself in the crosshairs if he could avoid it, right?

Anonymous call from a pay phone (they still have a few of those, right?)

So zombie dog owner comes back, goes to Blaine for brains, Blaine finds out about Major. Then he kills Major or tells Liv, probably both. Or, Vaughn finds out Major hasn't been killing zombies and kills Liv.

Hey, Blaine sounds like brain.

Seriously, it's just a dog. They sell them in stores.

Gah, Major. I do hope that leaving the dog on the bus brought more attention to him and got the police involved, ensuring he got back to his family quicker than had he been dropped off at the shelter.

What family? His only family is fridged pending zombie cure. Hopefully someone at the shelter they turned him in to will give him a home.

I feel a bit let down by the meals lately. I think the superhero had a "hero" sub sandwich or something like that. Weaksauce.

Ok.  I just gotta rant.

There are very few characters with disabilities on TV.  It was nice to see a paraplegic man on the screen, especially one so handsome.  However, the writers just fell into the cliches of people who use wheelchairs- that they can't work, that they need care givers, and that they have problems with sexuality.

Speaking as a wheelchair user with an injury more severe than what was specified for the husband, I work full time, I live without help, and I am certainly not sexless.

For just once, it would be nice to have a character in a show have a disability and a) they are taking care of themselves and their lives and b) their disability is entirely incidental to the plot of the show.

Will no writer, director, or casting director have the guts or vision to do that?

/rant over

Wasn't the dog's owner some rich guy who had a family? I'm pretty sure Major saw his daughter at the house. Or am I thinking of a different guy in his freezer?

I thought that was the first guy he "killed," and that dog jogging guy was someone else entirely. It's been a while, though, so I could be wrong.

Cthulhudrew is right, the rich guy was middle-aged with kids. Minor's owner was younger with dark hair, and IIRC, with more of an olive skin tone.

Absolutely agree. Bozzio is my favorite character now. She manages to pull off a mixture of smart, cool, and dork.

While paraplegic characters definitely few and far between, my first thought when I read your comment was Dr Fife on Private Practice. He was a doctor and Audra McDonald's love interest for a few seasons.

I suspect the show thought it was being edgy by making the disabled character a perp instead of a victim, subverting the "angelic but helpless" stereotype, but I thought they did a terrible job, and wound up reinforcing more stereotypes than they opposed. At least it was shown he was an abusive shit before his spinal injury, and the friend of his murdered spouse said he was unwilling, not unable, to have sex after. But I think that was under-emphasized and relatively subtle compared to the rest of the portrayal.

Darryl Mitchell, who is himself paraplegic, plays the IT tech on NCIS New Orleans, and while nobody on that show has a love life except Agent Pride, he's definitely self-sufficient and very good at his job.

Drake is beautiful. His make out scene with Liv was freaking hot- I don't know how she controlled herself. More of him, please.

Poor Minor. And Peyton. You say no to a great guy like Ravi then go for Blaine? Yuck.

On NCIS Delilah is in a wheelchair and a kick ass agent who has a nice romantic relationship with McGee. Or Felicity on Arrow recently had spinal trauma but is still being awesome at her job and love life. Those TV characters do exist.
