James Adomian hammers SNL for being (sort of?) anti-gay and for stealing material.

Many here will likely disagree with me, but the last time I checked out his Youtube stuff, James Adomian wasn't funny.  That's probably the reason he did not get on SNL or get his own show.

He says that the reason he didn’t make it on SNL is that network execs think that the viewing public won’t accept watching someone gay.  That’s undercut a little bit because SNL does have an openly lesbian cast member now, although there’s certainly more diversity work to be done.  I’m not familiar with this guy, but did he just reach his breaking point or something?  If he’s that hostile in public interviews (e.g., calling Alec Baldwin fat over and over when there’s plenty of other things to critique Alec for), the industry isn’t going to be falling all over itself to give him work.  Especially because now he says that network execs steal his material.  Don’t know this guy’s work; just surprised to read such an angry interview.

I think James Adomian's Sebastian Gorka is hilarious, but that being said, I don't think his brand of comedy would ever fit in with SNL's, so I'm assuming that's why he wasn't hired. Besides, being openly gay sure didn't prevent Terry Sweeney or John Milhsner from being hired (something he tweeted about in fact):

That being said, I don't disagree that there needs to be more diversity and headway made with SNL hiring openly gay comedians. I just don't think that's why James Adomain hasn't been hired.

Who is this guy? I've literally never heard of him.

Same. I get the impression he's a legend in his own mind.

He reads as extremely difficult.  I can practically see Lorne's expression if this guy was anything like that in his audition.

If the most they can come up with is two very short-lived cast members, that kind of says it all.

SNL was preying on fear and sneering toward gay men in their sketches even up to the late '90s and early '00s. I've always assumed that Lorne Michaels is reluctant to have anything beyond that type of safe crudity on what has been a very safe show for many years now. I'm just surprised to see a few comedians talking about it openly. This guy may or may not be worthy of being hired, I don't know, but I'm glad someone finally said something.

Reading the article - wow, he really hates Alec Baldwin. I guess that won't help much in getting hired either...

Pete got a make over by one of the Queer Eye guys. I'm neutral on the makeover, but Pete's new teeth are just horrible. They are so obviously fake and giant. He called them out in the last Weekend Update, but it wasn't until I watched this that I truly saw how bad they are.

^^^ Hader "confirms" one of my long-time SNL complaints-- the over-use of character spots on WU for bits that are too weak to sustain their own sketches.

When asked about doing a Stefon movie, Hader said no, "It didn't even work as a sketch.  That's why we put it on Update."

They aren't as bad about this lately as maybe 7-ish years ago during the Wiig-Meyers nadir, so maybe the moderate v. over-use of the practice is a good litmus test for how the writing is going generally.  They have Leslie and Pete coming on, who aren't doing characters at all, which is good.  Then they have some super-good ones like the Trump Bros. and Cathy Anne, and a smattering of some of Kate's (at least we seem to be done with babushka-lady for now) et al.

Just saw on Instagram that the April 14th show is John Mulaney with musical guest Jack White.

I wish Jay Pharoah was still a cast member so he could do his awesome Mulaney impression as he does here in this clip from the WWHL After Show:

One vote for making Jack White permanent SNL musical guest!

Jay's Mulaney-- that was the hardest I laughed all day and it's 10:42 pm.

That could be promising but imho Danny Boyle is one of those high-risk, high-reward, feast-or-famine auteurs.  I also see that he's penning what might be the next Bond James Bond movie.

Regardless, it's a higher-rent district for Kate, so good for her.  (Looks like Jay's not doing too shabby, either)(And Bill rocks in Barry)

Jack White's first album in four years, Boarding House Reach, dropped a week ago.

An early taste:

This song is a lot more layered than usual, with heavy mid-70's funk influences, and if you ask me, a tinge of Beck's Odelay.

Yeah, that was great.  I don't think the audience was familiar enough with Jon Mulaney to recognize how spot on it was but I enjoyed it.

However, it just reinforced my initial reaction when I heard Mulaney was going to host---why him?  How many non-super-plugged-in SNL viewers are aware enough about him to tune in to see him.

His new Netflix special is dropping soon. Like most former staffers coming back to host who haven't carved out significant careers beyond SNL, the ratings will probably be on the lower side and only attract regular viewers (especially since John was "only" a writer with a few Update spots; the casual viewer doesn't care that he wrote Stefon) it might be more about SNL doing him a solid and directing people to his special.

If you haven't seen his Netflix specials, please do. They are very funny.

Ah! One feels like a duck splashing around in all this wet! And when one feels like a duck, one is happy!

"Ooh, ducklings!"

Too old to be a duckling. Quack, quack!

I have listened to his Netflix specials so many times, I have them nearly memorized.   (“One black coffee.”)  I even went to see him on Broadway in “Oh, Hello” when I was in NY for business in late 2016 (which is also on Netflix now).  I’m super excited that he is hosting.

I saw the performance of his standup tour that he taped for the forthcoming Netflix special at Radio City. It was fantastic and I can't wait to watch it again (not because I'm going to try and find myself even though I was way up in the balcony, why do you ask???). Every time I think I've decided on which bit of his is my favorite I remember another one. His bit about Law and Order: SVU! The party where his friend stole the old family photographs! Or, an eternal classic: Bill Clinton never forgets a bitch, ever!

He's amazing and I'm super excited to see what he can do as a host (it also helps to know that he'll contribute a lot to the writing).

I was at the taping for this special, and I can tell you, when he got to the "Quack Quack" part, I heard the loudest laugh I've ever heard at any comedy special I've been to (and I've been to a few that have been taped). I swear, if anything on Netflix, I think they scaled back the laughter so you could hear him.

I'm trying to think of, other than Stefon, what John Mulaney's sketches were that he wrote. I know he wrote a lot (and ended up with an Emmy for writing the Anniversary special), but I'm completely blanking on what some of his recurring sketches were.

So, you'll need to confirm the hosts and musical guests of Saturday Night Live. The three remaining episodes of Season 43 until May 19, 2018. The list follows:

S43E19-Benedict Cumberbatch/Wiz Khalifa

S43E20-Paul Reiser/Charlie Puth

S43E21-Ryan Reynolds/Weezer

So, is that the hosts and musical guests confirmed via Twitter. Let's Find Out. Reply me back, now!!!

Mulaney wrote a lot as a team with Marika Sawyer and Simon Rich during his time at SNL. Some of the sketches I know they wrote together:

.the "Family Feud" parody with the Osmond family vs. John Phillips and his family

.the "Rocket Dog" sketch with Tracy Morgan

.the "Judy Blume" sketch with John Malkovich as a weird teenage girl at a sleepover

.the sketch with Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake as their ancestors at Ellis Island

One of my favorite sketches Mulaney wrote was an "Of Mice and Men" parody with Bobby Moynihan as Lenny. That's very much in the vein of one of his stand-up bits, how Lenny suddenly becomes hyper-aware of everything that's going on  ("Oh, because I couldn't possibly be as smart as you, right- OH WAIT, YOU'RE A RANCHHAND".

Mulaney also wrote a lot with Bill- they created the Vincent Price holiday special sketches, and they continue to work together a lot on "Documentary Now".

This is someone's idea of a (late) April Fool's joke. No hosts have been announced for May yet.

The finale's somewhat plausible seeming I guess, the other two are very unlikely (Cumberbatch's first episode was a dud).

I'm so excited about that! He'll be another fantastic host! And who would have thought he'd get the semi-yearly double host and musical guest slot?

BTW, I meant to post this earlier, but according to that Buzzfeed article linked above, I'm Wayne Campbell because I'm obsessed with pop culture. Alrighty.

Party on!

Interesting.  I saw some people speculate that Maya would host the finale to sendoff Kenan. I wonder if that's why Tina is going to host.

Is Kenan leaving the show?

I guess it's probably more because of the "Mean Girls" musical being on Broadway, but if it is Kenan's last episode, it will be nice to have someone there who was there when Kenan was hired back in 2003. I would imagine that Amy, Rachel Dratch, and Maya will probably all make cameos too.

I think it would depend on how far along they get with this show before next season.  Since it's in development, Hulu could decide to run with it and put it into production right away.  It could ask for a pilot first.

But since Lorne is exec producing, my guess is she'll be with SNL until it goes into production.

And I'm so there for an Aidy show except I don't have Hulu and I don't want to get Hulu.  Wah.

These are going to be SNL's submissions for this year's Emmys-- ( Source)

“SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE”
Variety Sketch Series
Comedy Supporting Actress – Aidy Bryant, Heidi Gardner, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong, Melissa Villasenor
Comedy Supporting Actor – Alec Baldwin, Beck Bennett, Michael Che, Pete Davidson, Mikey Day, Colin Jost, Alex Moffat, Kyle Mooney, Luke Null, Chris Redd, Kenan Thompson
Comedy Guest Actress – Tina Fey, Saoirse Ronan
Comedy Guest Actor – Fred Armisen, Chadwick Boseman, Chance the Rapper, Robert De Niro, Will Ferrell, Donald Glover, Bill Hader, John Mulaney

--I have a few thoughts.

First, Saoirse Ronan and not Amy Schumer and Tiffany Haddish?!? Seriously? I don't remember anything particularly memorable about Ronan's episode. (And she's not a comedy vet, which is usually what the TV Academy goes for here.) Granted Amy Schumer's ep wasn't much (She is a big name, though.), but I think Tiffany would be a very strong contender. I just don't get why they wouldn't submit her.

Similarly, where is Kumail? He obviously should have been submitted, and frankly it looks bad that he wasn't.   And submitting De Niro but not Ben Stiller is also really strange. Ben did a lot more and made more of an impression.  And finally, Fred? Really?  Why?

/Rant over
