OITNB was given a huge honor today with the announcment that they have been given a Peabody award:

The 2014 Peabody Award winners -- highlighting the best in TV, radio and web storytelling -- were announced on Wednesday's CBS This Morning, and Scandal, Orange Is the New Black and Tom Brokaw are among the honorees.

Orange Is the New Black (Netflix)
Lionsgate Television, Netflix
Orange Is the New Black turns a notorious drive-in genre - women behind bars - into a complex, riveting character study rich in insights about femininity, race, power, and the politics, inside and outside prison walls, of mass incarceration.

That Entertainment Weekly piece is pretty informative.  It's the cover story this week, and you can buy the issue digitally for your tablet or phone through iTunes [or presumably Google Play].  I recommend it.  Tidbits for season 2 [which I'm assuming are not "spoilers" by our working definition because they've been published by mainstream media]:

Season 2 picks up a few weeks after season 1 ends, with Piper having served time in SHU for her 'tucky beatdown.

Alex is in the premiere and three more episodes.  And yes, will be full time in season 3 presuming there is one.

We get back stories on Lorna, Tastee and Crazy Eyes among others.

There are some steamy Vauseman scenes [presumably flashbacks] that tested the actors' comfort levels [and I am here for that all day.]

This would seem to be Laura Prepon telling everyone that season 3 has been officially picked up before the announcement has been made:

http://instagram.com/p/noCvIhG64K/#

[not to be confused with her earlier statement that if there is a season 3 she'll be on it.]

ETA: Yeah, Variety's running with it now, though they're basically just basing it on her Instagram post:

Yeah, I thought it was funny that Hitfix said when they reached out to Netflix for comment and to ask about an official announcement they were like, "We decided to let Laura's instagram post be the official announcement."  Heh.  Netflix continues to give zero fucks about protocol.  I like it.

A slightly spoilery review of the season 2 premiere:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/05/15/orange-is-the-new-black-season-two-is-more-bingeworthy-than-the-first.html

The Hollywood Reporter covered the red carpet and talked with cast:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/orange-is-new-black-cast-705101

To kick off the screening, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos introduced vp original programming Cindy Holland, who compared season one's humble premiere party with just the cast, crew and their families at the New York Botanical Gardens with the night's packed and cheering Ziegfield Theatre. Kohan also told the avid audience, "It has been an incredible whirlwind. Someone once told me that the entertainment business is like a pie-eating contest where the prize is more pie, and I'm drowning in pie, but it's the most delicious pie! And now that I'm saying this, it sounds like a euphemism for vagina. I'm drowning in that too, and I couldn't be happier!"

Yeah, I read a really interesting article once by a reporter who was in their "war room" for the launch of season one, and that wasn't even that prominent a launch at the time because no one thought this would be that big a hit.  3 am EST / 12a PST guarantees fewer people all piling in at once, unlike if they tried this shit at 3 pm / 12 pm for instance.  Even for something with comparatively little buzz like the Orange launch, they had something like 30 engineers on hand monitoring action across all platforms [web, Wii, Apple TV, Xbox, whatever] and fixing any issues that cropped up.  It was really interesting but I have no idea where I read that.

New Trailer for Season 2 released this morning. Looks like Piper has taken a strool down the dark side. WOW!

Maybe it's just me, but the trailer for the new season looked more like a promo for Glee than a show about prison life.

You must have a more generous outlook on Glee than I have.

Kind of random but fun, Laura and Taylor did an interview on a Stockholm radio show yesterday that's archived here:

and another one [slightly more substantial]--

Both are pretty fun.

Pretty good interview with Jason and Laura from this week's UK/European press blitz:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnuuJhdXkj4

ETA: I like the interviewer's comparison of Larry to Skyler White on Breaking Bad as a divisive character outside the main action who makes decisions that nonetheless impact it.  Not a perfect analogy perhaps, but I thought it was an interesting one.

ETA2: Jenji was one of the participants in a comedy show runners' roundtable hosted by the Hollywood Reporter.  Really interesting if you like showbiz inside biz stuff and also really entertaining:

I have been watching the Behind the Bars features on Netflix.  I've always loved Kate Mulgrew from waaaay back (well before she did her Star Trek stint, even) so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that of all those features hers was by far the best.  She's not only funny and super talented, of course, but proves herself hella intelligent and wise as well.  I really think she and I need to be best friends.

Here's the link.  It also features Jenji talking about how she originally wanted an actual Russian for the part of Red, but says that Kate was so amazing in her audition that afterwards they couldn't see anyone else doing the role.

They seem to be out promoting the new season like crazy.  When I was zipping through the online TV guide last night, it looked like Taylor S. was on one late night show (Jimmy Fallon maybe) while Laura P. was another at the same time (David Letterman, I think).  Meanwhile, I caught part of a Laura P. interview on EW radio (on Sirius) yesterday and this morning when I was driving in they were saying that Natasha L. was going to be in studio with them in the upcoming hour (I got to work before she came on).

I think she was basically in all the episodes aside from the premiere, so really it's just semantic.

ETA: Actually several cast members have been promoted to regular status for season 3.  All people we saw in most of season 2, so no real substantive changes except for Prepon returning to full-time.  I'll be interested to see if she gets 2nd billing back...This season Taylor got first billing, everyone else was alphabetized.

Being promoted to a series regular provides them with more job security than guest star status and most likely a pay increase, so that's good for everyone who is going to be a regular in S3!

Oh, I know.  It's great for them.  I'm just generally more interested in what it means for us.  Ha.

Though when they made such a big deal about Taryn's promotion last year I thought it would mean more of her this year, which turned out not to be the case.  So I'm just saying the effect on screen's probably not that different.  Except in Prepon's case..  But I'm all for the people getting paid.

ETA: More of the cast being cute on the Today show, quizzing each other on little personal questions:

ETA2: A pretty informative radio interview with Laura about season 2 and 3:

Natasha Lyonne interview on Sirius XM with video.  God, she's funny.  She seems like she'd be so much fun to hang out with:

Talks about how she sent the pilot to a few actor friends, two of whom were offered parts and turned them down.  “It felt a little bit like, wait, why aren’t you guys going to do it…?”  A little confidence-unsettling, but she believed in it.

Hilarious conversation about the mechanics of oral sex on a woman:  “You’re going down on girls all the time.”
“Am I?  I mean, I remember they’re always putting Vaseline on my face, but I don’t watch the show, so…”

Talks about the lack of metrics on Orange and how that’s typical of her career and doesn’t phase her.

ETA: This is also a fun short piece the NYT did on hanging out with her and her friends for an evening:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/15/fashion/a-night-out-with-natasha-lyonne-of-orange-is-the-new-black.html?_r=0

Talk turned to Ms. Lyonne’s shooting schedule and her role on “Orange.” She conceded that it is sometimes difficult to figure out where she ends and her character begins.

“With ‘But I’m a Cheerleader,’ everything was from the outside in,” she said, referring to one of her early movies. “The costumes, the straightened hair. With ‘Orange Is the New Black,’ by the end of a six-month season in that prison, it starts to feel like I am this person. My accent’s thicker, I’m walking tougher, I’m officially living in that part.”

This doesn't really fit in any thread, so I'm putting it here.....

I've been listening to Pandora at work today.  Periodically, it stops playing music and will play an advertisement.  I happened to look up at one point and it was running an ad for OITNB.  Then, after the ad played, the wallpaper of the site changed to an OITNB ad and it had three links for three stations you could click on:  Piper Chapman, "Pornstache" Mendez, and "Taystee" Jefferson.  I clicked on Mendez first....  I tried to jot down the songs as they were playing, but I might have missed one or two:  (1) "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk; (2) "Cream (NPG Mix)" by Prince; (3) "Sex As A Weapon" by Pat Benatar; (4) "Can't Tell Me Nothing" by Kanye West; (5) "Swagga Like Us" by Jay-Z and T.I.  Then I got bored and switched over to the Piper station:  so far...(1) "King of Anything" by Sara Bareilles; (2) "Chandelier" by Sia; (3) "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet; (4) "Big Jet Plane" by Angus and Julia Stone.  After another song or so, I'm going to switch over to the Tastee station...

That was great!  Being a L & O fan too.  And it also reminded me how much I laugh every time "weeping woman" is crying on the telephone. I love that running joke.

(but not to take away from the unbelievable amount of time that article must have taken to write!!)
