I feel like they are giving him the Laurel treatment promoting wise. Overselling before we even see him.

For some strange reason, WB/DC have a major hard-on for BR, so the fact that they are selling him so much does not surprise me in the least.  On the bright side--if they are planning a spin-off, at least that would get him off Arrow.  /hater

-_- officially sick of hollywood white washing characters of ethnic background.

I'm not surprised, sadly, but the more I think about it, the more irritated I am. He's one of the few big bads that's a POC (that I can think of) who is an actual threat to the heroes. I can only hope for some misdirect and he's not actually Ra's, just a front man or something. Otherwise, I'm sure "he's the best actor for the job" will be trotted out.

That promo was awesome. Yay!

The multi-tasking quote and the smile after Lance asks about a hot date.

At least some of those shots are from Corto Maltese? 3X03 episode. Oliver, Roy and Diggle by the containers was in the BTS picture that SA posted.

When Laurel says the quote about their not being anyone left for her to prosecute I thought, yes then you can leave. :D

I was actually just wondering about this.  I had expected to get bigger name actors for the roles of Ted Grant and Ra's.  The fact that they cast basically unknowns but then have Brandon Routh for like a 16 episode run is bizarre to me.  I doubt that the guy will be sticking around next season, so why didn't they just save some money and cast an unknown for Ray Palmer too?

Yeah, they're selling him as hard as they did Barry. Hell, they're selling him more than Laurel, so I don't know what to think. I wouldn't put it past them to want to spin him off, if he does become popular. I, however, would love a BOP spin-off with Sara as Black Canary.

That guy is supposed to be Nyssa's father and the most feared man in the DC verse?  I can see him playing Dusan al Ghul, but not Ra's.

I guess they are going to go with the Lazarus pits existing, only way to explain why they cast that actor and why Malcolm's still alive.

I had the strangest reaction to that promo: the premiere is make or break for me.

So Oliver seems...super pumped for the date. And it'll end in disaster therefore he will push her away...after being super pumped for the date. And then Ray makes Felicity smirk. I know the more relaxed Oliver is a great thing, but wow do I feel cheated that I didn't get to see it happen. Laurel is saying fun and interesting things, Sara is kicking butt with joy, Thea is having fun with daddy Cray Cray.

I don't really know what to think of that promo.

Hee, I have been watching Brandon Routh since he was Seth on OLTL, and let me just tell you people SO WOODEN. And he hilariously left the soap in flounce because his character was going to turn out to be a gay hustler. He wrote a big flamey flame blog post directed at the show about how gays sinners going to hell (the producer was an out gay man). The next time I hear of Routh he's been cast by Bryan Singer and rumors that he got the job via Singer's hot tub parties.

Anyway I actually I was bowled over by how much better he was and how much I liked his Supes, who felt genuinely Alien in a way so few people aim for in that story. I've mostly liked him ever since, I liked BR better than I ever liked milquetoast Chuck as a show, so I enjoyed him a ton, and I also liked him in Scott Pilgrim, the Evil boyfriends made that movie.

I can totes understand the stiff comments though, he's better than he was on One Life, but he still tends towards the stiff.

Pretty sure that shot of Felicity is when Oliver's making his presentation-not a reaction to Ray. Based on one of EBR's Instagrams from filming the pilot, I don't think she an Ray like each other right away.

Although if he's in Malcolm's episode maybe it's a flashback to when Malcolm was in the League so Ra's would be younger. Still wish they hadn't whitewashed him though.

but people don't change much between early 40's at their 60's (unless they had plastic surgeries)

so.. you know.

i would have much rather they would have hired a mid 50's man, who is than in the mid section of 40's and 60's and thus should be easier - using make up- to age and de-age if necessary.

Yes silly me. I now realise it was probably editing because they're not meant to particularly like one another.

I think I'm having far more fun watching tumblr errupt than I did watching the promo.

Seriously?  He seems to support gay rights based on his twitter.

Anyway, I don't think he's that bad. As much as people don't like his Chuck character, I thought his performance was pretty good. I also thought he was fine in Superman Returns.

The promo - loved pretty much all of it:

- Diggle in action, no baby in sight

- Diggle, Roy & Oliver - out of costumes, fighting

- Confident, quippy Oliver - I've waited 2 years for him to finally show up - hope he doesn't disappear back into himself completely when all hell breaks lose

- Felicity at Buy More!  Or something... doing?  temp work, easy work, I don't know. Doesn't make sense but somehow, on this show, it's expected to. Hopefully it's more clear when the ep airs

- Nice stuff with Quentin

- Nice visuals of Thea and Malcom in training

- Ray seems OK... still hoping for the best with him/BR

- Felicity - Oliver banter... hope we hear Diggle and Roy's reactions to it but mostly, I want to see Diggle's overall reaction

- the hearts floating out of Oliver's eyes when he sees Felicity - wow

Nothing new with Sara.  Same hospital scene with Laurel that does her no favors.  The Laurel-Oliver walking scene was OK.

Nothing about Hong Kong?  Or did I miss something the ... ahem... "few" times I watched the clip/

Theory about Ray getting a spin off - I think it likely based on (1) the Barry-like Hype already, (2) linking him to Felicity a la Barry, and (3) the number of episodes he's appearing in.

Ra's Casting - seems too young. I was hoping for someone more exotic looking, who could pass for KL's father.  Like Obed Fehr. Oh well.  I don't know the actor or his work - I've enjoyed the casting so far on the show (mostly) so I'm more than willing to see how this turns out.

Also - I'm hoping that by casting a 'no-name' (no offense to the actor), it means the budget didn't take a hit.

That makes no sense. She graduated from MIT and worked for Queen Consolidated, a major company. Oh writers.

For those who need details (or info for that fanfic) Felicity is working/maintaining a cover/paying the rent at Tech Village.

I love the idea that  Felicity's is working at the Arrow version of Buy More.  With Brandon Routh coming on and all.  So Chuck.

Maybe they're selling BR so hard because a) he's movie star and b) possible recurring or spin-off role.

Hopefully he's over whatever that was because...  Greg Berlanti, John Barrowman, Colton Haynes.  (It still burns me that on a show with three gay men prominent, the only gay characters are played by two heterosexual women.

The promo was excellent. There was a lot of Felicity in it and that makes it all the more fun. A flirty Oliver was awesome. I even liked Roy and his dumbfounded expressions at the end of the promo.

What I cannot digest is whitewashing the character of Ra'as. It's not like we do not have enough Middle Eastern/South Asian actors playing the role.

Honestly, if they wanted to go for someone young, they should've cast Faraan Tahir who played Raza is IronMan. He was both muscular and menacing in a cerebral way.

BR played Justin Long's boyfriend in Zack and Miri Make a Porno so I'm guessing his worldview has widened. Otherwise...awkward.

I'm sure he is, it was 13 years ago, it was one of his first roles, and he actually got fired for refusing to play the gay storyline, so the rant was at least partially sour grapes and the stupidity of youth. It was just ironic to me that after making such a scene of being anti-gay he gets his big break from a rather notorious out gay man in Bryan Singer, and then has played gay at least twice since.

Oooh Faraan Tahir would have made a GREAT Ra's.

This is completely off topic but is Colton Haynes even gay lol? I always here he's dating these female costars and he's never said he is. I though that was just one of those rumors they make  about every single young male.

I know, ugh this annoys me lol. That's one of the reason I didn't really want Liam Neeson. What is wrong with casting a middle eastern looking actor.

@ban1o, it isn't confirmed that CH is gay or bi or whatever he pleases to be. I think it's all mere speculation.

yeah that's what I was thinking.

They should have just cast Katrina Law as Ra's. It would make just as much sense as this guy. And I'd be super excited for it. If he's a Ra's stand-in and they secretly have someone more fitting up their sleeve, it would go a long way towards increasing my faith in the showrunners, though.

I'm also a little disappointed in the "multi-tasking" joke since I heard the same punchline to a similar joke in The Winter Soldier a few months ago. If Oliver's gonna be quippy, it could at least be fresh. But if I had never seen Arrow, that promo would definitely convince me to check it out. It is firing on all cylinders. Don't these dorks look so cool!?

I always thought they would hire someone swarthy and sinister like Faraan Tahir, this Aussie dude looks too much like a biker dude to me.

Unless he blows my mind as Ra'as, I think I am gonna hate him.

Down with whitewashing characters that should've been played by people of color.

Yeah as soon as I heard the line I thought Black Widow in The Winter Soldier when she was trying to set Cap up on a date. Not very original Arrow writers!

Eh, I'm sure the "multi-tasking" joke has been made by far than just the Winter Soldier.  I'm fine with that.

Also, I really hope it's not THE Ra's al Ghul. There are too many excellent Middle Eastern  actors to not hire one. Naveen Andrews, Taran Fahir, Assaf Cohen, Nick Tarabay, Oded Fehr, the cast of Tyrant, Lewis Alsamari etc etc.  But like I said I hope it's just a front man

I'm really surprised at how different it is in tone it is from the first one. Love the shots of Diggle. And yes, all voiceovers/narrations should be done by David Ramsey. It doesn't bother me so much that Felicity is working at a BuyMore (thats its name, you can't tell me otherwise). I actually like that fact that she is assisting them from a public computer lol. I'm inclined to think that her awesome qualifications as an MIT Graduate were tainted by QC and her placement as Oliver's EA. People talk and I bet rumors got around. That and it wouldn't surprise me if she is in a holding position waiting for Oliver to get his company - though I like to think she would be getting a position in QC or the Applied Sciences Division.

Laurel is Laurel. Nothing new to report there. Nothing new with Sara either. Love Lance, how much you want to bet he is on scene of the explosion and sees Oliver on a date with Felicity and that is how is finds out who the Arrow is?

I think BR can do funny and I don't think a lack of chemistry will be a problem with EBR. As long as it doesn't become an angst filled love triangle I will be okay. Though love triangles with guests are stupid, one is a GUEST star. It sounds like his storyline is more than that so I'm relieved there. He is in 16 episodes and I don't think they would promote him so much if he was just obstacle to Oliver/Felicity.

Count me in as disappointed with the recent casting news. A big Huh? from me. I would have thought they would try and top the name recognition of BR. Routh's character must be really important…and that worries me, cause I want him to be more than a love triangle, but not that much more. I hope they aren't looking at adding him as a regular next year. The cast is big enough.

The stunt department is working overtime. They look amazing.

I have a feeling they are going to be screwing with every emotion this episode. They are going to take us high and plummet us back to each. I can't wait.

I'm actually kind of upset about the Ra's casting. I'm sure I'll get over it, but still. Like others have said, what the hell? Did they spend their entire cast budget on Routh? Bad choice casting department, bad choice.

And yeah, another bad choice to steal a joke from Winter Soldier. :(

Yeah I'm thinking they have something big planned for Ray Palmer. They cast a pretty recognizable actor, he's in 16 episodes, they're pairing him up with Felicity and they're promoting him a lot and already calling him a "fan favorite". If he was just to be an obstacle for Olicity the wouldn't be doing all that. I know some people were thinking spin-off or miniseries? Being a regular next season is a possibility I think.

Link to comment

Doesn't Ray Palmer have significance to the Flash, in the comics? Maybe they eventually plan on crossing him over on a permanent level if well received.

Edit: Okay, he has a connection to Firestorm. I knew it was someone on Flash.

The producers did say that they were doing something "clever" with Ra's, so maybe there's a twist? Maybe I'm too optimistic? Maybe I give these people too much credit?

Link to comment

I'm the only one trying to figure out the timeline of the episode by Felicity's dresses? I'm so confused.

I really really really REALLY don't want him to be a regular next season. That thought alone turns me off the character and I want to see him before I judge him. Because then I think that they are building up him and Felicity and then it will get serious and they will call it popular and put Oliver back with Laurel and then I will not watch the show.

I'm not saying that as an Olicity fan, I'm saying that as a fan of the show who believes Oliver/Laurel would ruin my enjoyment of Oliver.
