Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda - General Discussion

I don't understand the second case, where the hospital reported an attempted murder because an IV pump beeped and the IV was pulled out of the patient's arm.  IV pumps beep all the time, and IVs get pulled out all the time.  They acted like the pump knows when the drug is wrong or the dose is wrong, but it doesn't because it's not a magic device.  It only knows what it's been programmed to know, which is how fast to run the IV, and it doesn't care if the drug is changed or the rate is changed.  It beeps for one of three reasons:  it thinks either the bag is empty, there's air in the tubing, or the tubing is clogged.  I'm guessing that there was more to it, but the show didn't bother with a realistic explanation why anyone would have thought to call the police.

I used to be Facebook friends with Carl Marino but I had to defriend him. He has a harem of annoying female fans who fawn over him like he's God's gift. And he's an annoying Republican. So there you go. Not surprised Lt Kenda doesn't care for him!

I'd have to watch again to be sure, but wasn't it because the nurse noticed the fluid the husband injected was milky?

I thought that was the specialist nurse they brought in after the cops got there, who confirmed the line was tampered with.  I did wonder about the immediate call to the police. Maybe the first nurse also saw the cloudy fluid, but they didn't state that in the show, to make it more dramatic when the specialist saw it.  However, the husband did pull the line out when the alarm went off, so that may have been the reason the first nurse became suspicious, especially if he had no explanation for why the line was pulled out.

The most recent one was really sad.  Poor 16-year-old kid, murdered due to mistaken identity on the part of a gang of idiots, egging each other on.

That was so tragic.  Joe is right, teenagers don't think of the consequences of their actions, but then, killers of all ages rarely do.

The last episode with the 16 year old victim seemed almost like a thrill kill. The kids weren't even sure if it was him, they just wanted some action after watching Boys In the Hood. I don't think they were in a gang. Gang of idiots is right.

That episode was the perfect example of kids (or heck, adults) who do things as a group they would *never* do alone. None of those kids was sure it was the right guy, but nobody wanted to be the punk who chickened out and called it off. So stupid.

You are so right, phantom; it is the epitome of the mob mentality we often don't admit exists, but is ever so prevalent in our society.

Marino is an absolute creep. He was involved in a bunch of criminal activity in the Bay Area in 2011 and a few years before, a case with the reality show and private investigator and corrupt police officers which got a lot of coverage in the Bay Area.

Marino wiggled free of being prosecuted but was very involved in some despicable crimes and cons, including setting up a well known and well liked winemaker to be arrested for DUI. Marino lied to the guy to get him to meet over drinks and set up this elaborate scam to make the victim think he would be featured on a TV show that simply did not exist. The really point was to get the guy to drink enough wine to be over the limit so he would be arrested for DUI. Marino texted his boss when the winemaker was drunk and the boss tipped off a cop on duty. Just horrible.

That case received quite a bit of coverage (here) and (here) and here. Actually, it looks as if Marino pulled the same con on another man in addition to the winemaker. There were a whole bunch of other scams Marino was pulling with dirty PI boss as well, really scary stuff.

Its good to know that Joe Kenda knows what kind of creep is playing him on the Homicide Hunter show, but mind boggling why such a jerk would get the part in the first place. One would think there are plenty of non-criminal actors who could play the young Kenda more effectively.

My problem with Carl Marino is that he mumbles all his lines. I can't understand half of what he says. And he's a terrible actor.

The show seems to be built around the real Joe Kenda, his personality, and his memory of all these horrifying cases he had to solve, so the producers probably want Marino's "dialogue" to be muted, almost like background noise to the real Kenda's narration about the case that is being re-enacted. From what I have seen, Marino's lines are irrelevant. He just regurgitates random police lingo at crime scenes and interviewing victim's friends and suspects. It's not a very deep part, although a more experienced actor would have livened the re-enactments up considerably. The reason to wath the show, obviously, is the real Kenda

"Somehow, more than other shows on ID these days, this show often leaves me mourning the senseless violence that wiped out the lives of the victims. Maybe someone can put their finger on why that is. Maybe it's the way Joe talks about the victims."

I think it's because you sense how much Kenda cares; it makes the viewer care.

This is why I like this show more than a lot of the others - Joe really shows compassion for the victims and the stories are not sensationalized. There are other shows that trivialize the crime and victims

and in the back of my mind I am screaming - hey, someone DIED here - show some respect....

In regard to possible murder suspect Craig, who denies even the most basic known facts, Kenda deadpans: "The only thing that Craig is sure of is that he's reasonably certain this is North America."

I love this guy. He needs to write a book or two.

It's mostly obvious when Joe is doing his voiceover with so much personality and intensity and then they cut to Marino parroting the lines without any feeling behind them.  I really notice it when he's doing an interrogation and Joe puts all the irony and sarcasm into his voice, but Marino says the lines as if he's ordering a pizza.  Not asking for DeNiro, but a little acting ability, especially when you're acting the part of someone with so much character, WHO IS RIGHT THERE, would go a long way.

Some of the cases have seemed less interesting at times, and maybe that's why some episodes have two cases.  I'm thinking they first produced the cases Joe found the most interesting and as the seasons progressed, there are probably fewer of those.  Not that he can't make any case meaningful.

Anyone seen his commercial where he's in front of the fireplace and the stockings say Kenda and Mrs. Kenda?  Hilarious!

Gah. lost my original reply. Royal Caribbean has a cruise in January. A travel company put together a cruise, I presume in coordination w the show. Joe and wife Kathy, as well as CM and others will be on the cruise, with exclusive events planned. In a moment.t of madness, I decided I needed to go and convinced my sister to go w me. No idea what to expect, but I am sure it will be amusing. Had to promise my sister I will not geek out and embarrass her. Most of the attendees will be meeting at a local hotel the night before and boarding en masse. Should be interesting.

I remember seeing an interview with Lt. Kenda in which he said that he never yelled at a suspect in an interrogation interview, because it is more intimidating to be cool, calm, collected. If the suspect senses a calm confidence from the interrogator, they are more likely to crack under pressure. The very first time I saw Morino interviewing a suspect on the show, he slammed his hands on the table and screamed, "WHY'D YOU KILL HER?!?!" and I thought, "That actor certainly didn't follow the Joe Kenda method." Later, I saw his name on the credits and I couldn't believe it was the same person who was setting people up to be arrested in the Dirty DUI scandal. I looked him up on Internet Movie Data Base and sure enough it was the same guy. Just incredible that they cast an actual criminal to play a good cop.

That's crazy. Is Morino being paid to go on the cruise? If so, does Royal Caribbean know that they are employing an admitted con man?

Don't know if they are paid, but I am sure the premium price I paid goes to covering the cost of their cruise. The cruise lines obviously do not vet all passengers, based on the crime stats that do make the news. It will be interesting how much 'non-Joe' we get. I really do not care about CM. He is not why I enjoy the show. But, for all my peeps, I will force myself to attend at least one Marino session...

Just don't have drinks with Marino, it will lead to very bad things, as it did for two men in Contra Costa County who he set up for DUI arrests while commiting identity fraud crimes and for countless young women who Marino and his boss Chris Butler took advantage of with their kinky "decoy interviews"

I am really looking forward to the cruise, as things are hectic right now, work and home. I will do my best to give an entertaining report.

Also a big fan of Purel and have trained myself not to touch random stuff. I work from home so am really careful out in public. Always afraid my resistance is low. Big fan of EmergenC. Wow, I sound like a germophobe, don't I? have never gotten sick on a cruise, knock wood. I also plan to observe CM from a safe distance!

Just found this casting call for the mutilation case in the last episode.  Thought it was interesting to see something of how the reenactment casting process works.

Especially since the actor they got to play the killer looked nothing like the guy in the actual mug shots.

Whoa -- that's pretty interesting!  That segment really got my heart pumping, for sure.

P.S.  I don't care what any of you think, but in MY opinion, Carl Marino is a total BABE.  I sure the hell wouldn't throw him outta bed for eating crackers!

I am trying to come up w intelligent questions for Lt Joe, assuming I get the opportunity. Hi Joe, I am paloma58 and I have been sent to scope you out for all the forum posters at previously.tv! I really have no idea what to expect, so it will be interesting. Was talking w my sister, who I dragooned into joining me, and I posed the possibility that Joe goes back to his cabin, pours a Scotch and wonders who all these nuts are. Or, profiles us and is very, very afraid... I am really looking forward to it. Been having a rough couple of months, but the floor refinishers showed up today, so that is progress of sorts

I read the book The Set-Up about six months ago and that's when I first got interested in the Kenda show and started to watch it (binged on quite a few of them during the Xmas marathon).  I am really surprised Marino still has his job after all the stuff that came out.  I'd imagine a lot of actors fib a bit about their life stories, but his fibbing went quite a bit further.

Marino's fibbing wasn't just truth stretching, it was deliberate and criminal. He's a disgusting individual who had no problem lying to good people, getting them drunk and letting them drive, knowing they would be arrested by a corrupt police officer. That he escaped prosecution and plays a virtuous police officer on a TV show is outrageous.

I would ask Joe Kenda what he misses most about police work and how often he researches current cases, such as that lunatic in Colorado Springs who shot up the Planned Parenthood office a few weeks ago. How did that guy get weapons?

The grocery robbery case was one of the most interesting cases he's presented.  I'm surprised it was saved for late in season 5 because I thought it was excellent.  Maybe they thought we wouldn't be interested in a case where nobody died.

so, about Carl...he was pleasant enough, but I think most of us were on the cruise for Kenda. Carl appeared at all the sessions in a suit, which I thought was an interesting choice, as Joe was always in a polo shirt and khakis...well, I guess Carl was going with the TV persona? HA! While he did not have a lot of insight for the basis of the show, he gave us a lot of info on how he got the part, how the show is shot, and how they call on the crew when they need extras. I think it might be a little intimidating to be on stage with Joe :)

Oh, and Carl got the job the old fashioned way - he auditioned, and Joe had no say or veto power. And, in my opinion, the camera loves Carl, since I thin k he is better looking on TV, tho he is still a nice looking guy, in person. From what Lt Joe said, he (Joe) basically does his talking part, and the producers of the show are the ones who decide what is on the screen, from Joe's comments to the scenes filmed and how much of the story is told. Joe records 2 cases a day - 4 hours in the morning and another 4 hours after lunch. Joe seems happy to collect the checks, and I don't mean that in a bad way. It sounds as if Joe and Kathy, while both with good jobs, never had a bunch of money to waste. They raised their kids, got them through college without them having to take on debt, and are now REALLY enjoying their retirement! Joe said Kathy likes riding in limos very much. I will be posting more in the 'My, My, My' topic soon

Who said that he got the job by auditioning, Lt. Kenda or Marino? With what has come out about Marino lying about being a 9/11 responder or a war hero, I wonder if he told those lies during there casting process. If he lied about getting a medal of valor—which he admitted to doing in the Mitchell Catz DUI trial—and that helped him get the role, he could be prosecuted under the Stolen Valor Act. The guy should be rotting in prison, not going on cruises to pose for pictures with fans of Lt. Kenda

Carl was responding to a question about how he got the part. Saw the casting notice and said his wife ultimately convinced him to make the drive to LA on the chance of being selected for the pilot. I wonder about the other candidates, since the Kenda portrayal you see is pretty much all Carl. Never seen him in anything else, but not stretching his abilities too much

I just checked out Marino at IMDB. He's got a lot more credits than I would have thought. He's been in 16 episodes of "I (Almost) Got Away With It". His credits go back to 2009 so he's been making a little money.

Headline:

Supreme Court Strikes Down Stolen Valor: You Can Lie About Military Service

It's still immoral...IMHO.

This is in reference to the original Stolen Valor of Act which President Bush signed into law. It was very vaguely worded, making it a crime to lie about receiving any medals of valor in any context. This made it a crime to lie about receiving a bronze star or a purple heart while playing darts with a stranger in a bar. The Supreme Court overturned the law because it was seen as an infringement of free speech.

In 2013, President Obama signed a new version  of the Stolen Valor Act into law, with more specific definitions on what makes this unforgivable fraud a federal crime. The new act says it is illegal to lie about receiving medals of valor in any way that allows the liar to benefit with financial reward, property, goods, etc. from the lie. So, a jerk can lie about getting a Purple Heart in a bar and if people believe him, he's exercising his free speech rights, but basically a jerk. However, if the bar owner says, "your tab is on the house, hero," then he is in violation of the Stolen Valor Act of 2013.

https://www.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/house-bill/258

I have been following Marino's case because he set up a well respected winemaker in Northern Caliornia in 2011. The winemaker met with Marino, believing Marino was a TV producer named John Brown who wanted to do a new show for A&E television based on his winery. The meeting was scheduled in a wine bar and Marino kept ordering glass after glass of wine to make sure his victim was good and drunk. meanwhile, Marino was texting his boss who was watching the bar from outside. When Marino told his boss that the victim was leaving the bar, Marino's boss called in a cop to pull the victim over and arrest him for a DUI. Mafrino was clearly committing an identity fraud crime by claiming to represent a TV network while conspiring with a corrupt police officer and his boss to set the man up for arrest. During one week in January 2011, Marino pulled this same nasty trick on two different men, both of whom were arrested for DUI.

Last summer, both men sued the county that employed the police officer who made the arrests, as well as Marino's boss, for a civil rights violation. When the suit was originally filed in 2011, Marino was named as a defendant but he agreed to testify for the plaintiffs and was dropped from the suit. He went under oath to explain his role in the setup and had to answer a LOT of questions under oath. I read the deposition and he admits that he has been lying about receiving Purple Hearts and a Silver Star in his acting auditions. he's quite a smug little jerk about admitting to a federal crime, saying "that's what actors do." (I'm sure DeNiro told Martin Scorsese he won a Purple Heart in Vietnam to get the role in Taxi Driver.)

Marino goes on to say that he never makes an effort to correct the record if someone believed that he actually did server his country or suffer injuries in war. His arrogance about being a disgusting liar is astounding...he's very much the kind of person that Joe Kenda describes on the Homicide Hunter show, a self serving liar who has no conscience about committing crimes.

Ooh, great question, Ina!  As an expert smoker, I commented that Marino was either one hell of a method actor, or he has smoked IRL, because only a pro can drag that good and do the nose exhalation thing (the best of us can double drag, but that's another story).  Now if only he could blow a chain of perfect smoke rings, I'd be impressed!  :-)

I don't ever remember them interviewing a perpetrator before, and that dude did himself no favors by being the first. He gets jealous, agrees to take a gun to confront Melinda and Roger, and is still claiming that it was self defense and she misconstrued the events. The fact that he still doesn't take responsibility for barging in on two sleeping people brandishing a gun makes me think he is a dangerous man. And he and the shooter get slaps on the wrist. Second degree murder and accessory? Really?
