Social Media and Behind the Scenes: AKA Everything Else Not "News and Media"

They were not made for show promotion. They were not released by the network. They would not have been released by MG if people had not noticed them in the trailer and begged him for it. They are in no way equivalent to the Superhero Fight Club posters or the Diggle/Spartan and Thea/Speedy posters.

It's about intent

I don't even know what excuse they have at this point. EBR seems to love photoshoots. If it's about money, then I don't know why Malcolm Merlyn gets multiple shots of him in different LoA outfits but Felicity can't get even one.

It is still something that they went out of their way to do. We don't have anyone else getting any kind if similar photos that Thea fans could enjoy. Like I said, Felicity fans, I can understand wanting more and I wouldn't mind if she got a new promotional picture but for me at least she gets to enjoy other perks thus I am not mad about Thea getting a poster to promote an upcoming episode when the character doesn't get that much in general.

I don't think we're overreacting. Or maybe I'm just boiling over with frustration because I feel like as a Felicity fan, I have to work so hard to get any tidbit and crumbs thrown to me while other characters get all the promotion just because.

THIS. Felicity fans have to work so hard to get recognized because we're forever dismissed as 'she's not in the comics' and 'she's not a hero because she doesn't wear a mask.' I've had enough of it tbh.

What just kind of gets me is that parts of this promotion just contradict each other. Felicity can't be a part of the episode descriptions because they have to wait until it's revealed that she's alive, yet

Malcolm and Thea are in the description for 415, guess they're ok!

(putting it in spoiler tags just in case some people get really picky). The CW's promo for 412 focused on the team fighting the Calculator, yet they don't promote a follow-up on what was one of the cliffhangers of the actual episode. I'm not even bitter, just confused.

It's still early. Maybe there will be another father/daughter poster? Yeah? No? Is anyone buying that?

Ugh. Guess this means no interviews with TA or EBR. They got a big social media boost when Donna was introduced. Felicity was trending for hours; before, during and after the episode. You would think they would try and duplicate that.

I shouldn't be surprised at all, but I'm super disappointed.

I'm actually really impressed by how gorgeous that new Thea poster is.  I've never really had an artistic eye or anything, but I really like the colors and the positioning (yeah, I don't even have the right vocabulary for this!).

It would be really cool if the other father/progeny pairs had posters, too: Felicity/Noah, Oliver/William (ugh), Laurel/Quentin, and then Diggle/Sara* just because we deserve good things!

ETA: *Exempt from the whole "sin" tagline, of course!

Just now finished reading Guggenheim's Tumblr responses. I almost needed to glue my eyeballs so they wouldn't roll out of my head. He did make two mentions of some things not happening until he leaves the show and while I'm not advocating for Bamford to be fired or for Felicity to get a suit, I would love if Arrow gets a new showrunner. Wendy becomes the senior showrunner, and maybe someone who doesn't think Oliver needs to be made stupid, who has a better handle on pacing, storytelling, character development can take over.  #IfWishesWereHorses #GirlCanDreamRight

I have zero knowledge of how show running works and I have very little basis for this, but I wonder if WM is taking the lead on Felicitys family storyline while MG has more do with things like LOA.

Technically, as co-showrunners, both WM and MG have to sign off on all plots that go into this season, but I have always wondered about the amount of investment that each of them have on different plots. MG has always been a plot, big-picture type of person, while WM seems to be, or at least what I'm getting from her interviews, a more character-focused person, or at least she's trying to be. So far, most of s4 has been more character-driven than s3, so I do think that these moments between characters, including Felicity's story with her new disability and with her family, have more to do with WM than with MG. It's kind of a partnership really that can flourish in someways if they use their partnership correctly. Marc could, and probably did, sign-off on the idea that Felicity would end up in a wheelchair, but Wendy might have been the one to make sure that there was some follow-up emotionally to that event (411 and 412), or at least that's how I picture them working on these stories. When it comes to these conflicting plotty moments with character moments though, like what seems to be happening in 413, I just wonder how they decide to balance them out behind-the-scenes.

I suspect that they might be dividing up the last script pass between them. Regardless of who's credited for an episode, showrunners will always do the last revision of the script, which can be something as small as just reading it for final approval, or as huge as rewriting significant parts of of the text. When there are two showrunners, it makes sense to divide that task between them.

Btw, I don't think Arrow is one of those shows wherein the showrunner does super major rewriting in every single script [hello Joss Whedon], but I can't help but think the episodes with the crappy pacing issues are the ones Guggie is revising last.

About the lack of promotion for Felicity's arc. I have a theory - and I'm sure it's not founded at all, but, could it be that they are "testing the waters"? It's February sweeps after all. What if they want to check how people respond to episodes promoted some way vs episodes promoted some other way?

Sure, it could be as simple as the network wanting to push "Fights! Swords!", but my crazy self wants to believe there's some kind of plan, haha.

Ironically, my CW's episode preview page had a description similar to the one posted here, but had a picture of Dig in his costume... so who really knows what the masterplan is? Visually I want to watch because I see Dig and then I read the description and go "ugh"... So perhaps they are playing some mind games.... At least @looptab's theory is promising that they are trying to figure out what makes the show work for future seasons/eps. I'd prefer that over we really have no clue what we are doing promo wise.

I genuinely don't think they care enough to have some kind of ulterior motive/plan. Their whole PR is lazy town. Biased, too, but essentially clueless. And as @Chaser said, cheap.

I think that it's trying to send out an ultra-drama promo message to up the stakes for the sweeps episodes. Main character has fight to the death with other character to save another character's life. It's visually easier to promote than Felicity and her father talking, even if we find out something dramatic. I would say that I'm not surprised over the visual promotion, but the last promos for 412 didn't even include Roy, which I would have thought would be an easy sell.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the ratings for 413. I can't be the only one who is bored by promos featuring a redux of the LOA / Thea needing to be saved again storyline. I did not particularly enjoy S3 so I have little desire to rewatch the same thing play out again in S4.

I can't help but wonder if they don't want to show someone in a wheelchair in promos for an action show. Which is gross, but totally Hollywood.

One would hope that with X-Men and Professor X that wouldn't be true, but it's sadly very possible.

It happened in the old Birds of Prey tv show constantly and was one of the reasons they shifted focus from Babs to Huntress and when Barbara did get a centric it involved her using a device to walk. The WB didn't think people in wheelchairs could be sexy or engaging and I doubt that the CW is any different.

It's one of the reasons why I'm confident Felicity won't be in the wheelchair for long. There's nothing "Sexy" about a woman in a wheelchair (per Hollywood). They'd never let their leading lady stay wheelchair bound for long. I'd kill to see the CW's notes on these episodes as well as been a fly on the wall when MG/WM pitched this storyline to the Execs. How does it work with the clothes? Do the shows have to pay for some of the more expensive clothing or do they get it for free from the company? Because Felicity wears alot of BCBGMAxzria, LL wears Hugo Boss quite often. And I know it sounds shallow but you cannot really showcase the clothes in the same way if you are sitting down.

I always assumed they have some kind of contract with the companies that they don't have to buy everything and can just borrow some clothes and/or buy certain pieces.

Contemporary clothing is sometimes purchased by the studios, sometimes provided by designers or a high end store. In some cases it's on loan, in other cases the production company gets to keep the clothes. I'm not at all sure what Arrow is doing here, but since the show hasn't been doing a lot of the "Oliver Queen's wardrobe courtesy of/provided by" stuff, it's possible that it's purchasing costumes and/or working with the Warner Bros extensive costume vault and/or getting loans from designers, or a combination of all three.
