This is a terrible segue (RIP Rusty!) but I don’t think anything funnier will happen than one of the producers on the LeBatard Show calling in from Marlins Park.  Billy sets up Jon Lester making the first pitch of the season...he winds up...throws the pitch...

and it’s a home run for the Cubs!  It was magical. 

I have to edit this because Jon Lester pitches for the Cubbies, not the Marlins.  Unfortunately, I don’t actually know who the Marlins starting pitcher was.

Sad news about Rusty Staub :(

 

I passed him on the street one day, back last decade. He was of course instantly recognizable, and big. Oh, so large. (i.e. tall and burly, not rotund). I reported my sighting to my mom later that day, and she was all, how did you know it was him, and I was all: 1. excellent facial recognition software; 2. He was on the back pages of the papers A LOT back in the day. You learn a face, is my point. Plus, how many Giant Gingers with balky knees are you likely to see in midtown?

Opening Daaaaaaaay. I just looked at the MLB Standings page, and all those tantalizing 0-0s up and down the list made me very hopeful. 

Here's to you all and your teams: May they all hit 'em where they ain't!

I texted my mother to tell her that Springer hit a lead off homer and she thought I was kidding. 

Two years in a row he’s done that. It was also his 100th career homer.

I was always a fan of the Expos and Le Grand Orange was the top guy. Just a wonderful guy and it was Grand having him in NYC even as a Met.  Very sad.

Watching the Yanks and I have a question for Blue Jays fans. David Cone and Michael Kay (YES announcers) were commenting about Donaldson's throwing to 1B. They said it looks like he's just lobbing it in, as if he has no arm strength due possibly to the shoulder issues he has had. What are the sportswriters, announcers and talk radio folks saying about him? Just wondering. In the replays he really does look like he is having difficulty.

Donaldson’s throw to first that was challenged (also, the runner was safe) was one of the most awkward throws I have ever seen a professional baseball player throw.  I mean, there has to be something wrong, right?

Giancarlo is on pace for 324 HR! A Gardy Party!  Here comes the Judge, who went 2-4!

Also Meredith Marokovits diplomatically said that John Sterling’s Stanton HR call received “mixed reviews” which is code for “everyone hated it and he should cease immediately.”

I feel bad for him (Donaldson) as he is a FA after this season and if he doesn't get better it could be curtains for the Big Money.

Yanks can't possibly play this well every game...Could they? Sanchez is an effing beast! No HRs but he had a double where he looked unbalanced in his swing yet he generates some scary power. I love him. And Didi. And Seve.

Going through the DVR of the pre-game, with remembrances of Rusty. Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling looked sad. Anyway, I'm fast-forwarding, and I see archive footage of Gry Carter. I play it . . . .and it's footage of Gary's final game at Shea, mixed with one of his daughters reminiscing about seeing him one last time. Turns out SNY were set to debut a one-hour special about The Kid. You think that if the network knew Rusty would pass today, they would have scheduled the special? Only the Mets.
Oh, and Gery ended up in the Hall of Fame wearing an Expos cap. It's galling . . . the Expos haven't played in Montreal in forever, but they have one more player in the Hall than the Mets. More painful? The Mets have the same number of World Series titles as the Marlins. You know, baseball's longest-running garage sale. How else did the Mets get Al Leiter and Mike Piazza?

Found these lips clip from Rusty Staub Day in 1986. I was there . . .  biggest ceremony I'd attend until Tom Seaver's number got retired.

I just saw the Blue Jays tribute to Roy Halladay and my thoughts on this are probably colored by my father being tragically killed in a car accident in December, but I certainly hope the organization ran that ceremony by his wife first.  It seemed both tone-deaf and overly jaunty, especially when memorializing someone who has been gone less than a year.

We were winning.  Then we weren't.  There was free baseball, but it wasn't making me happy because we were winning, then we weren't.  Then... I love Adam.

Every now and again, I wish my job had paid time off like this. I wouldn't mind getting thrown out of some staff meetings, that's for sure. But for some reason, getting thrown out of projects for a day at a real job usually means getting bounced from the whole job. Not fair. Well, the Tigers season is off to a great start.  Opening Day - postponed due to weather.  Cold and rainy in Michigan in late March - shocking!  Opening Day 2.0 - Cloudy & temps in the 30’s at start of game.  By the end of the game it was sunny and in the low forties.  Of course, the end of the game was 5 & a half hours later.   Including one 15ish minute delay after the home plate ump left the game because he got hit by the Pirates pitcher and then a 7 minute delay for the New York officials to make the wrong call.   Today’s game - postponed.  Tomorrow’s game - split double header.  

 

If the evidence to overturn an on-field call is supposed to be “clear and convincing”, why did it take 7 minutes to make a call?   It obviously wasn’t clear, so did they just decide to flip a coin?  Of course, I am biased towards Detroit, but if it is that hard to tell from multiple angles, slowed down and zoomed in, I think you should go with the on-field call.

Yanks getting paid back by Jays and the universe. Billy McKinney hurt. Shit. I like him.

Betances imploding again. No HRs for #99 yet. Jays running wild. That's ok because they can't win every game nor can they win every day with bombastic bombs. Wounded include McK, Hicks, Ellsbury, Frazier and now my baby Adam Warren went out after getting smashed with a ball on his heel/foot. I've been a big supporter of Betances but I'm starting to think he will mos def become a FA and the Yanks will wave good bye and good luck.  

I've been excited about this team but I've tempered expectations b/c you never know when injuries will arise. Anyway, onward.

No, its inning after inning about what they did when they were playing, and who they knew, and is Albert Pujols about to be cut by the Angels when he's just about to break all of these records, and who's there in the stands, and here's the best food that somebody ever brought into the booth, and on and on and on.

I saw this report this morning and got all excited:

After multiple incidents during the opening series of the season, the Phillies have reportedly fired manager Gabe Kapler after three games. Former manager Pete Mackanin will return to the bench in place of Kapler for the immediate future after the organization moved him to the front office during the offseason.

Turns out it was just a cruel April Fools Day hoax.  Dammit, man.  I don't bail on managers/coaches  early as a rule but this will be a loooong  season for the Phils unless Kapler settles down and gets his shit together.

And it's supposed to rain all day on Tues. Mets got rained out also. April is a bitch.

If they are going to insist on lengthening the playoffs, the regular season is going to have to be shortened.  Fewer games, more doubleheaders, something has to be done.  Didn’t the playoff used to be best of 3, best of 5, best of 7 for the WS?  Maybe back to that?   But playing in late March in the north is just stupid.

I'm sitting in the Phoenix airport waiting for my connecting flight to California and wondering how an afternoon baseball game can be over already.

Derp, AZ doesn't observe daylight saving time so while it's only 1:05PM here it's 4:05PM back home.
