I must be alone here. David doesn't strike me as gay at all, just "not macho." Because a man (especially one raised with all the Gothard stuff) isn't macho and is rather awkward and soft-spoken doesn't make him gay. I enjoy this forum but this is an aspect that has always seemed quite catty.

He was more flaming in his earlier appearances, he likely saw what people said about him online, and butched himself up for subsequent appearances. His davidlovespriscilla.com site is really strange, and within it there's the story of how he entered into a courtship with Priscilla. Pa Keller asked him "I have only two questions for you: Are you willing to trust God with the size of your family and second, are you willing to be accountable to Priscilla for your Internet use.” Plus, he held off courtship and marriage for a relatively long time. Also, David and Priscilla were 25 when they got married, so relatively old by that point. I don't think she got many offers, people may have found her simple nature off putting. David was working for Gothard, squeaky clean and he's so white he's almost blue, so a catch in Gothardland. I think David just found women off putting.

Its funny bc Hinsdale/Oakbrook/Downers Grove is pretty expensive, I really want to know if TFDW and Prissy own their home. They live in DG which is FAR cheaper than OakBrook/Hinsdale(those areas have million dollar homes) but still pretty pricey. 

I'm almost 100% positive that Gothard/IBLP owns the home and that the Wallers rent.

I like his name (TFDW). I think it suits him. I also believe if we met him in person, we'd like him just fine. He does seem a little flashy, and he's CERTAINLY up to his eyeballs in the Koolaide Godspeak. He IS a little fluffy (to me), and a little flamboyant, and a little dimmer than he, himself, would like to believe. I'm not all about calling out someone for being (or not being) gay. Truthfully the reason I stick with "TFDW" is because he's got a suitcase full of "Spiritual Superiority" that gets on my NERVES. (Josh had that going until just over a month ago...). I'm pretty sure that title followed him here from another snark site, but...I like it.

No, when either of them tell the refreshment stand story, they say that Anna was with one of her sisters. They never say who JOSH'S accountability partner was, but I think we can now all ascertain with about 100% certainty that it was a brother. I hope to God that they didn't let that creeper run around the ATI homeschool conference all by himself!

I LOVE what you did for the mountain lions.  I'm astounded that California allowed that.  Did they only issue a certain number and that is why you were able to shut out the other jerks that would hunt such a beautiful creature?

 

I'm with you.  I think I will apply to JTTH.  I'm curious as to the requirements.   I highly doubt I will be accepted - but it might be fun.  Maybe TFDW could teach  class.  I'm LMAO- while thinking of what class I would put him in charge of.  I need to send myself to prayer closet asap~

Yes, California had a limited number of cougar hunting permits. But those who hunted were allowed to do so with dogs, which lent an extra level of cruelty and misery to the slaughter of these majestic cats, who were run to exhaustion, treed and then shot.  Not talking about mountain lions near a grade school here - mostly all in the wild (where they belong). Anyway, that option is now thankfully defunct.

 

I'll look into JTTH. Don't know if it costs $$ or requires church bona fides, but I'm willing to find out and post the answers here. While I have had (OK, still have) a really embarrassing fascination with families like the Bates, The Willises and the Duggars, the little I know of JTTH suggests to me it's mostly about beating (metaphorically, I hope) the spirit and independent thinking out of young women. As a mother of two daughters, I find that horrifying. I'm assuming JTTH will refuse me. Though if I could find any way to take a class from  TFDW --- OMG! Who could resist that!

I think you have to be a single female between 13-30 to be considered for the girls' JTTH. However, they also offer a Mother's JTTH, because you know women are such sinners! I do not think they offer this service for married men, and there are about 1/3 or maybe 1/2 the amount of boys' JTTH than girls'. Make of this what you will.

Interesting stuff to know, Sew Sumi. And just between you and me and this message board, I'd be out on all but the married mother eligibility (since I'm well over 30). But then that's info I just voluntarily gave you. A creative application might not include those details. In truth, I honestly doubt any mass application move is viable, though I did make myself smile today when I took that train of thought off the rails and found myself entertaining notions of going all "Gloria Steinem posing as a Playboy Bunny to expose the sexism and misogynistic values of the Hugh Hefner machine." Except this time it would be Gothard and I'd only have to wear clothing that covered me from the neck to the knees (as opposed to a bunny suit). Folly or no, I'm still going to look into how I could apply. I'll bet most everyone thought Gloria Steinem was crazy too.

When I started reading this forum and kept seeing references to Gothard HQ in Oakbrook, it piqued my curiosity since I live in an adjoining suburb. With a little research on Google I was shocked to realize that this was a building that I pass by on a regular, sometimes daily, basis. A building that for years I quite frankly thought was abandoned because I've never seen a single person there and there's never any movement or change at the windows. (Admittedly I have never driven down the side street that has access to the parking lot.) It's a plain red brick building with a white steeple in the pseudo-colonial style that was popular for business complexes in the 60's. There's minimal landscaping, just a lawn with a few evergreens, which is decidedly not the style around here. There's also this huge (as in West Point could troop the colors there) red stone patio in the back which has absolutely nothing on it.

 

It's a perfectly fine building. But you know what? The place creeps me out.

To the point where if I glanced absentmindedly at an episode and she was quickly shown with a straight face, often in profile, I didn't know who she was at first.

Right, just as the Duggars have made a big deal about the guys having internet accountability, agreeing never to look at it alone, etc. So in and of itself, that requirement doesn't at all mean Pa Keller thought TFDW would be looking up gay porn; just porn in general.

I think catty is a bit of a harsh term. We have definitely made fun of David's Gothardite beliefs, and I believe those, like all opinions, are fair game. I happen to think their patriarchal and bigoted ways of thinking are very damaging. As for calling him TFDW, in and of itself, I'm not sure how that's so mean. Whether or not he's actually gay, and of course he may well not be, he did act quite "fabulous" early on especially.

I wouldn't even go so far as to say change, but they probably do believe that even people with strong desires, placed in settings and held accountable, can resist those desires. But having those desires alone doesn't make them sinners and they ALSO have a moral responsibility to help you with those temptations.

There is a lot that is messed up about fundamentalism. But one thing it doesn't do is whitewash sin in your own daily life and provide you with a community and structure to help you manage it. It's not something everyone or even most people need, perhaps, but if you did have an addiction, we are learning that being part of a living community that you are intricately connected to results in greater results than even the AA "higher power" method.

And it says something about the Kellers as a family that they are obviously not afraid to take on some challenges with people, both personally and professionally, that many of us wouldn't want to come into contact with.

But I do recognize the risk they take. Their world could come crashing down.

One thing that confounds me is that one kid who was supposedly away at "college". WHYYYY is it that none of the other college age kids snap and post pics of him? (Maybe they have, I wouldn't know him if he walked in my front door!). He seems to have just evaporated. If he's in public, YAY, good for HIM! But where IS this kid? They've done a better job of locking down and isolating themselves (even the married ones!) than I ever could have. 60 to zero in .13 seconds. Clown College semesters end around the second week of May, so Joe would have been back home by the time Joshgate broke. I remember this from when I saw pictures from Erin Bates Paine's graduation last year.

I saw fundies in demin skirts once or twice- once in Yorktown Mall in the JC Penny and once by the World Market/Nordstrom Rack/ TJ Max Strip mall in Oakbrook terrace. But they are super rare considering the HQ is right nearby.

 

They stick out like sore thumbs around here. lol And the maxi skirt trend is IN so I guess they could blend in if they wanted to get regular maxi skirt and dresses ( who knows maybe I have encountered more fundies than I realize) - I myself could pass for a tendy fundie  time to time ( i LOVE maxi skirts) but they had the ankle length denim thing going on with the long hair and polos. 

The people in JC penny had little girls with them all  in the denim skirts so that was the most obvious.

I shop on the boarder of Niles/Skokie and I see women with long skirts, their girls with long skirts and their boys in shirts and long pants. But being near Skokie I think they are more Jewish than fundie.

However, they meet at HQ and are driven/bussed up to the UP. They used to meet with Gothard before embarking for Northwoods; I'm not sure what the protocol is now. I do know that they still meet at HQ, though. TFDW just talked about it in his most recent blog post. 

 

I've seen some VERY unfortunate-looking girls in JTTH group pictures, so I guess they're checking for "bad" hair and/or errant piercings, tattoos, etc.

Yeah! If you scrunch your hair and put on a long skirt, you'll blend right in! Just make sure  you have a chaperone! Preferably male!
