Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

Personal pet peeve - I am either a hypochondriac or easily suggestible.  Reading the news yesterday I started worrying that a dry patch on my forehead must be cancer.  Today, reading about Lisa Marie Presley I am experiencing pain near my heart.  Jeeze.   I just spent almost 3 years sure I had Covid.  Damn good thing I didn't go into nursing!

I think it’s normal to think that way, especially now.  We’ve been cooped up in the house since Covid, and lots of movie stars have been dying lately.  Winter doesn’t help either.  Lisa Marie had everything.  I’m wondering if she kept up with a cardiologist being heart trouble ran in her family.  I feel so sorry for Percilla and her daughters.

What's weird is how many of these wedding advice pages talk about how no one should come that doesn't fit your "vision." I guess I come from a huge Asian family where a wedding "vision" is lots of relatives eating a bunch of stuff. I am surprised to hear brides talking about color themes and "vision" like it's some sort of Instagram filter.

That was probably why my dad had issues with my “vision.”  I had the plan for me to carry purple flowers while my bridesmaids, wearing purple, would carry white.  Oh no, that’s the colour of flowers one uses at a funeral!!  After a heated argument, we settled with cream.  He had zero issues with my non-Chinese banquet (didn’t do door games or any of the pre-wedding cheesy-ness often seen at modern Chinese (or at least culturally Hong Kong) weddings).

This discussion makes me glad we went away to get married.  Just us and nature.  No fuss, no muss.

While I understand people wanting to celebrate with their friends and family, the wedding industry is as predatory as any payday loan lender.  And all the family drama!  No thank you.

My family is the same.  I cannot even begin to imagine dictating to my guests what they could wear.  The point of a wedding in our family is it's an excuse for a party.  Lots of food, lots of music and dancing.  For the older members of my family nowadays a wedding is also a chance to see one of the younger generation finally  get married after probably having lived together, bought a house and produced a few children first!  I am just trying to imagine the comments by Mother and her sisters would have made if someone had the gall to tell them what colour they were allowed to wear!

lol  No doubt!  I know the world changes every couple of generations, but it sure seems that this latest batch of adults want a complete do-over of all the things, whether or not warranted.

Yes, I hear my father talking.

This is great! I wore a white dress because you know...and I carried white lilacs and my bridesmaids wore lavender dresses and carried purple lilacs. Same color scheme as you.

Same here.  But it was white roses for me and purple themed bouquets for the bridesmaids.  The reason for that colour though was my youngest sister adored Donny Osmond and I let her pick the colour scheme and Donny's favourite colour is purple (as I'm sure every former reader of Teen Beat knows).  Looking back I guess I was the total  opposite of a bridezilla - the only decision I made that I cared one tiny bit about was the white roses other members of the family made all the other decisions.  In fairness to me, frankly I didn't care, but also I was writing my final exams etc so I had other things on my mind.

I pretty much just wanted to get it over with. I would have been happy with getting married in the county clerk's office. I wanted to wear a red dress too. But our families insisted on a fancy church wedding. I really only cared about the lilacs - my favorite flower. I had a VW Bug back then and the wedding party filled it with lilacs during the reception.

Inefficiency.

I have a final round interview this coming Thursday. It turns out that only half the people on my interview panel will be actually in the office. The other half work in other locations and so there’s a time difference, so I will be talking to them on video presumably from a conference room. At that point…you can’t just do the whole interview via video so I can stay home and everyone can just meet me the same way? Why is it so important that I come in (and getting up before dawn to catch the bus) to just spend half the time talking to people via video conference which I can do without having to print my resume and pay for transit?

And yes they asked me to print my resume. Isn’t that their job? (I had an interview yesterday and my interviewers already had my resume.) Party like it’s 1993.

Looking at all these possible red flags is this really a company you even want to work for? If they are this disorganized now, what will it be like when you work there?

I honestly don’t, but being out of work, I am afraid they’re the only ones who will offer me a job. (I catastrophize a lot so I already have envisioned a scenario where I have no choice but to accept this job and drain myself from the commute.) I’d have dropped out by now or not taken interviews in the first place if I were happily employed still.

Forgot to mention that some of the people who I’ll be interviewing with on Thursday are people I already met in Round 2. Including one of the video interviewers. I’m not sure what I can talk about with them again. I’m afraid I won’t have enough questions and will look disinterested.

I just got off the phone with a recruiter for a company in the exact same industry as my last two jobs. Yet she kept asking "what did Company A and Company Z do?" OK, come on--for one thing, you have my resume, I presume, right in front of you, as you just used the companies' names. And, two, you just said that you are familiar with the work of Company A, which literally does the very same thing that your company does!

Is it possible she was trying to verify that you actually did work there doing the job you had down in your resume?  It can get really tricky with resumes.  People are not always very honest in what they put down.  We once hired someone who we found out later had used her sister's resume to get the job.  Don't ask me how HR missed that one but it does happen.

I get your point of view, but if I was a hiring manager (in other words, the person to whom you would be directly reporting) I would definitely insist that you come in in person - there is no substitute for meeting someone face to face and evaluating their body language etc. whilst in the same room. As to printing your resume - don't you have a printer? Why is that such a big deal?

I know you prefer remote work but you may need to adjust your expectations long term...just because during the Covid lots of people (usually the already employed) got to work remotely doesn't mean this is going to stay the mean for everyone long term. As a manager of a staff of headhunters for many years, even though its a job you can definitely do remotely, I would not want to encourage 100% remote work. I want to hear and see what my staff is doing and know that they are available for briefings on new clients and recruitment assignments in an in-person group setting - not in their jammies on a couch somewhere, distracted by their kids or pets.

Today's peeve:  people who race into a FB discussion just to announce they really don't care about the topic.  Listen, I get it, there are tons of things I don't care about.  That said I don't feel the need to insert myself into someone else's discussion just to let everyone know that.  Just move on.

Lol it’s not just fb. There’s a completely unrelated forum I’m on, where someone can post “what’s your family’s favorite thiggerjigger?” and one person can be sure to post “well, my family doesn’t thiggerjigger, we don’t think it’s worth it…”.  Oh wait, did I just do what you’re complaining about?

There was recently a long thread on NextDoor from someone new to the area asking about good Chinese restaurants.  After numerous suggestions had been offered, someone posted to say "I don't eat Chinese food".  Not "I don't eat Chinese food, so I can't personally vouch for it, but my wife loves [Restaurant]" or "I don't eat Chinese food, so I can't help, but welcome to the neighborhood" or anything like that -- just "I don't eat Chinese food".  Okay, thanks for sharing, dude.

With all due respect, and as a person who has been working at home since March of 2020, I would not want to continue working for anyone who assumed I was slacking off just because they couldn’t see me—especially if I haven’t indicated ever before that I was unavailable or distracted or on my couch. Isn’t the evidence in the fact that the work is being completed? Why would any company even keep paying people who they think so little of?

@Cloud9ShopperI don’t have a printer at home. I don’t think it’s weird not to. I have only so many surfaces and outlets!

Oh, yes, this gets me, too. If you (general "you") truly don't care, you wouldn't bother to click on the topic and comment. That's kind of the whole point of, y'know, NOT caring.

I try to pick my battles in real life, but if I'm being honest, I get annoyed by the term "white trash" and how it's still so common.

I don't think class slurs are nice, nor the implication that black and brown people are understood to be trash. I don't think that's the way a lot of people mean it, but  I still think it reinforces white supremacy.

I used to have one but it broke, and because I need to print so little these days I just never bothered replacing it. I just go to the UPS store whenever I need to print which is so infrequent. I do most everything online.

And to your other point, I agree. I worked from home from 2020 on until I got laid off and held a remote job for almost five years prior to the pandemic (early 2010s). I had good performance reviews in my last two jobs for being remote all or most of my tenure. Even the boss from my job that laid me off is willing to give a positive reference. I’m sure she wouldn’t if I had done nothing productive at home…and she worked remote too. We did just fine.

Is it like the Amazon reviews, where the purchasers get emails if someone else asks a question? I get the idea that some people don’t understand that the email with the question isn’t only for them and they feel obligated to reply, even if the reply is, say, “I bought the large one, not the small one, so I have no idea if the small one will work” (that’s what she said!) or something like that.

That said, I feel like I need to check out Next Door; it seems like it would make me laugh.

Agreed. They kicked me out of the office in March of 2020 and I haven't been back. They forced other departments to go back but my doctor said nope and gave me a note. All I would literally end up doing is get up, get dressed in "business casual clothes", put together my coffee and lunch, drive 25 minutes to the office, go inside, go into my office, close the door, not talk face-to-face to people, let alone my boss who I was lucky if I saw twice a month despite being in the same building, leave my office to heat up food or use the bathroom, then go home at the end of the day.

My entire job is supporting people not in the same building I was officing in. Going to the office was pointless.

I have a printer because I got one for about $50 on Black Friday a few years ago. There are so many ways to print for a few cents, if needed, printers really aren't needed these days. My parents have their own computers and their own printers. My mom literally prints every invoice from Amazon, almost every email she gets from this organization because she is "going to put them in a binder one day" (narrator: "She will never put them in a binder").

No, you really don't. I joined the one in my new neighborhood, a day later I quit. It was full of lost pets, abandoned pets, racists, and people scared of their own shadow. Ring is almost as bad. No, the person turning around in your driveway isn't casing your house.

Not unless they've elected to have posts emailed to them rather than just checking the feed.

This so much. The wedding industry has become so overblown and overpriced but until Brides & Grooms say enough is enough it will continue. An acquaintance of mine has a daughter planning a wedding, one of the venues she looked at wanted $50,000 for a basic food offering and cash bar. Are you kidding me? My youngest is still single but I told her that she will get a set cash gift from me, in the 4 figure range, and that's it. Such a waste of money for one day.

Total agreement.  My daughter got married and between her, our family and the groom and his family all told we spent about $30k.  I admit I got swept up in the excitement of the wedding and we wanted to help give them their special day.  But jeeze louise, looking back that would have been a very nice downpayment on a house!

I know right? I don't fault anyone who wants to spend and has the money to spend, I feel bad for parents/couples who cannot afford and/or feel forced to spend to impress others. Again, until the Happy Couples start to say no to the wedding industry bullshit it will continue.

As a guest, if I was told I had to wear a certain color, or travel to some exotic location in order to attend, I would be sending my regrets.

For some cultures, weddings are SUPPOSED to be over the top and if you don't do it that way, you're cheap/lose face.  It's their version of Keeping up with the Joneses.  I didn't want to get a lot of jewellery for my wedding, and so many people were surprised by it.  They were also shocked that I wasn't going to change multiple times (I didn't even get a Chinese wedding dress.  Only my white one and a vintage dress my mom wore as one of her changes when she married in the '70s).

Oh, then we changed outfits, got in the car at 6 pm and drove to the Poconos for the honeymoon.  Checked in, then immediately went to an Italian restaurant and had ravioli as we were starving.  I don’t think any bride and groom eats at their own reception.  We had a good menu too.  Italian, then prime rib, then some ethnic food my Mother made me add.  Back at the hotel, I did the bubble bath thing, put on a sexy white gown and drank half a bottle of vodka right out of the bottle. (Nervous), while he took a shower.  Passed out, and woke up the next morning with a hangover, as I don’t usually drink.  Thank God he has a sense of humor.  Just reminiscing.  Wish I could do it all over again.  I would make sure to enjoy the day.  And night, lol.

Well, our long national nightmare ended today. My husband's nightmare anyway.

I haven't had a valid driver's license for about seven months. It started when I woke up with a miserable upset stomach the day we were going to get our licenses renewed (birthdays very close together). I told him, "You go, I'll deal with it next week." So next week came and went, then the week after that, and again and again . . . And every time we planned to go (it had to be we, because obviously now I couldn't just drive myself, and it had to be at the DMV, because I had to do the eye exam, so no online renewal), something would come up. Brakes needed to be fixed, water heater flooded the basement, work deadline, etc., etc., etc. And then it was months I couldn't drive. There was even a week when he couldn't drive, because taking me off the insurance policy meant they needed to rewrite it and it took a week to become valid again. So a friend had to drive us to vote. Very embarrassing.

I have to admit that for a while I kind of enjoyed being chauffeured everywhere. I even started calling him "Jeeves." But lately I've been getting pretty antsy. And he started getting more than a little resentful and coming up with excuses for not being able to drive me places he didn't feel like going. So today I did it. I'm now officially licensed to drive a car again. My insurance doesn't kick in till midnight, which makes me feel a bit like Cinderella in reverse. But tomorrow I hit the road. Watch out, Maine!

Bummer, but congratulations on the road again.  A new life.  I haven’t driven for a year .. back issues, then surgery.  Husband has bee driving me and it’s getting to him too.  I’ll be driving soon, but a little apprehensive.  Crashes everywhere, all day n night.  Traffic up the kazoo.  I just want to go to Kohls again.  By myself.  40 mph tops.  Not some asshole in back of me doing 70, flashing his lights and honking his horn while puffing his joint.

Just a hint girls .. take it or leave it.  When in Florida, a friend of mine had glowing skin.  It was the foundation, so I bought it in Macy’s and have worn it ever since.  It’s called “Este Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue Moisturing Makeup “.  Spf 45.  A light cover up that isn’t drying.  It gives off sort of a glow.  I’m fair, so I use 2C3 Fresco.

I've been using E.L.F.. daily moisturizer in the AM and nourishing night cream in the evening for years and it gets along great with my skin. I also alternate between their facial cleanser and trader Joe's face soap. I eat what I want, rarely get a breakout (wasn't it disproved that chocolate or food causes acne?). Part is genetics but I tend to leave my face alone and it appreciates it.

It's kind of a cycle. When you have flaws, you want to cover them, but I do think less coverup leads to better skin. I try to buy noncomedogenic makeup and wash my makeup brushes regularly. All of you fortunate to have beautiful skin, enjoy it and leave the heavy coverups for me.

I don't know if it's chocolate specifically, but I think a high glycemic diet does indeed lead to breakouts. Unfortunately I'm a carb-loving vegetarian. Love doughnuts, chocolate, bagels, you name it. I can have chocolate in moderation, it's just when I pig out I can break out. Wished it showed on my body rather than my face. So much easier to lose weight than that acne/acne scarring. :(

Unrelated pet peeve, I keep losing my darn keys. I need to buy a key finder already.

Family members who forget I’m no longer a child. I’m en route to the city for my job interview and my mom just said to me “make eye contact and present professionally.” I’m 37 years old and have had several jobs now. Does she really think I go into interviews dressed like a slob and chewing gum while staring at the floor? Or staring away from the computer and appearing bored? I hate being treated like I’m dumb and have never had a professional conversation or a job in my life.

Edit: She is still being very overbearing and pressuring about this. She really wants me to take the job if offered and is trying to push her feelings on to me. Tried shutting her down and explaining this is ultimately my life and she wouldn’t listen. I have no plans of telling her if this is the only offer I get I will continue looking for something remote or closer to home.

I sort of remember that too, it was passed off as 'hormonal', but now the general consensus is that certain foods (chocolate among them) can cause inflammatory responses throughout the body, skin included. A quick search will lead to articles about this.

That was me and I was posting fr my phone. Interesting how things keep changing. It makes sense that acne would be an inflammatory response.

Annoying Peeve:  Looooonnng phone greetings on doctor's offices & business answering machines. Calling in a prescription last week I had to wait through a long message about getting your flu shot before I could hear my options. Today I had to call our payroll department and got a long message about when our W-2's would be sent out (not what I was calling about). Also, any greeting that starts out "Please listen carefully as our menu options have changed" when nothing has actually changed, I get this from my Gyn's office. It's been the exact same for years.

They're supposed to say that for liability.
