Is Constance Wu very different to her character on Fresh Off the Boat?

Because the snippets in the trailer make her seem kinda Jessica Huangish still.

Not intended to be a political comment but I swear us Aussies are the most random nation.

Some guy is now the new PM this afternoon and I'm like "Who's dat????"

But what do you expect from a country who's bachelor candidate is named the Honey Badger? No I'm not making this up!

I had an outpatient surgery on Wednesday. I had a lypoma on my back removed, and I assumed that the stitches would be out in about a week. The first surprise came with being sent home with a drain. A small one they taped to my back and I didn’t have to do anything with it except for watch that I didn’t lean on it. And it came out today. Yay. Except... See you in two weeks. Meaning the stitches will still be in for two whole weeks. And I have the next week off. Blergh.

All of this is a long intro to saying that I’m mostly homebound because of the heat, I can’t use my right arm fully without pulling on the stiches and I’m bored out of my mind.

I'm trying to figure out if I can get it from Croatia. It would be good because I watched season 1 of Harlots and saw the network which aired it won't start with season 2 straight off.

Poor @bijoux!  That does suck.

Would radio work for you?  I find there are a lot of interesting programs on BBC/Monocle, DW, ABC (Australia) and CBC .  One program I really like World Hacks which presents interesting ideas from around the world like how to help provide people necessary drugs when the economy has crashed, cutting down onon trash or teaching children empathy to avoid violence when they grow up. There are also some places that still have radio dramas like Ireland.

I was listening to the radio last night and they kept interrupting with "BREAKING NEWS FROM AUSTRALIA"  and I was really? You think that a PM stepping down in Australia is that important? Australia declaring war on another country, yes, but a coup d'etat in the Liberal Party???

Haha you should have seen our news during the cricket cheating scandal. You would have thought there was a crisis of epic proportions not just a bunch of cricket cheats.

Since you guys have been talking up To All The Boys I Loved Before, I decides to try combat my boredom with the book. I downloaded the audio version and it's pretty cute. And the narrator is really good.

After finishing with the To All The Boys audio book and starting on the next one, and frankly, getting frustrated with the constant teen angst, I caved and got Netflix to watch the movie. While it’s not perfect, I like the movie better. It’s more streamlined and focused, which works better here. Also, while I still think the narrator did an amazing job with Lara Jean (her reading of the letter to Peter was pee in your pants funny), she couldn’t keep it up with other characters. I don’t know if it’s the writing or the narration, but book Peter doesn’t really stand out much at all. Movie Peter on the other hand makes an impression almost from the bat. The way he goes right away to set the record straight with Lara Jean and he’s firm, but not unkind about it is genuinely great for a kid that age.

I like some of the stuff they changed in the story, like nixing on Margot and Josh being snobs about Peter and jocks, adding to Lara Jean’s friendship with Lucas, and having Lara Jean confront Gen. It was spin the bottle, you psycho! ?  That killed me dead. But speaking of, the actress playing Gen was God awful.

Let me know if there are any polls about Best Parents, because oh my God, Dr. Covey should sweep them all. I loved him. He was such a great non-typical Dad for this kind of film. You know they normally fall into two categories. 1) No boys until you’re 40. 2) Totally clueless. I don’t even know if I can pick my favorite scene of his - pulling out is not protection, him overhearing Chris and Lara Jean talking about Peter and throwing his two cents in, or the diner scene. I know there’s people wishing for a sequel. I don’t think it’s really necessary at all, but I’d likely watch it if Dr. Dan found new love.

I know i read somewhere on Twitter that one of the leads said they were told if it was popular there likely would be a sequel.

I liked the movie's originality but I have to wonder at the dearth of good teen rom coms if this, a very good but not what i'd rank as epic tale gets this much attention.  I mean, does it rank up there with a Some Kind of Wonderful or even 16 Candles?  I guess time will tell.

It was interesting, because me and my friends (who are closer to the John Hughes generation) had a little movie marathon which included TATBILB and 16 Candles, and we were all kind of shocked that we preferred TATBILB.  16 Candles has the racism, consent issues, and the couple don't really know each other before starting to date.

I can see that.  Some Kind of Wonderful was always my favorite anyway.   The best friends who only figure it out in the end.  I suspect that one holds up a little better.  At least they don't have a Long Duck Dong or the implied hee hee of sex with a passed out woman.

ITA. He was so supportive and sweet in that movie. And he actually did something aside from being the crush object.

Better, thanks. ? I managed to do a load of laundry and load and unload the dishwasher. Now I’m basically trying to be careful with the stitches so as not to tear them, but the pain is manageable.

Watched Set It Up, ran across the Veronica Mars movie on TV, enjoyed both, and am basically switching between Grace and Frankie and Brooklyn 99 eps on Netflix. Also have a question about Netflix. The iPad app offers the download option, but not the site when I log in on my laptop. I downloaded The Alienist. Does that mean I can watch it offline? Also, has anyone seen The Alienist and do you like it?

I may be wrong but it seems download option is only available for tablets. And yes, that definitely means you can watch whatever is downloaded offline. I’ve done this when I know Wi-Fi could get spotty where I’m going. I’ve heard very good things about The Alienist from friends but it’s not my particular cup of tea.

I'm so jittery today!

My baby is due to do his first speech ever with palm cards. PALM CARDS!!!! I remember having him on the bouncer and moving him from room to room while I did chores! When did he grow old enough for palm cards?

I didn't censor his speech either so I can't wait to hear what his teacher thinks!

Very nervous Mumma here but we practiced and he knows all the eye contact rules (they find it hard to resist reading off the cards) so here's hoping!

What are palm cards?

Also. wow, it's kind of awesome how young he is doing a speech.  I wonder if starting them young cuts down on nerves.

Small palm sized cards with notes on them to help the kids remember their speech.

I think that's their intent in making them start so young. I don't recall doing speeches until I was much older. They have set topics every fortnight starting middle of this term.

Update: He told me after his speech his teacher addressed the class and told them that he used humour in his speech and it's something that they can add to their speeches if they want to.

I think she liked it *proud mumma*

I think palm cards are what is called cue cards here.  (memories of speeches in public school)

Good for him for using humour!  That's a higher level of mastery to be able to do that.  I see that he's inherited his social skills from you.  ;-)

Ladies what is a manic pixie dream girl in stories?

It was Book Week last week so I am going through all the winners to check out new books for the kid. I stumbled on one where a reviewer complained about a manic pixie dream girl and realised I am not sure what that is!

I read the definition on wiki but didn't find that too clear. Wiki implies these girls have issues whereas I thought it was a slightly hyper super cheerful/very robust girl.

If someone can shed some light I'd be grateful!

A classic example is Natalie Portman’s character in Garden State and Zooey Deschanel is frequently accused of playing one but I don’t think her character in New Girl qualifies. It’s like an oh-so-quirky girl who’s sole existence is to show the male character how to have fun and live life.

Thanks Guys! I googled the trailers for Garden State and Elizabethtown.

For some reason I thought the girl character would be happier looking! But I kinda get it! I think it's more about the dude. Both dudes in the trailers looked like sad sacks.

Manic pixie dream girl is also the term some haters throw out anytime they want to discredit a female character and then pick and choose characteristics to try and fit their narrative.  I've seen it used for Felicity because she was cheerful and sometimes lacked that filter.  The term gets misused kind of in the same way Mary Sue might.  So I'd always take reviews that reference either with caution until you can verify the source or get the same comment from a source you'd trust.

Per TV Tropes (there's more than what's quoted below)..

Quote

Let's say you're a soulful, brooding male hero, living a sheltered, emotionless existence. If only someone could come along and open your heart to the great, wondrous adventure of life...

Have no fear, the Manic Pixie Dream Girl is here to give new meaning to the male hero's life! She's stunningly attractive, energetic, high on life, full of wacky quirks and idiosyncrasies (generally including childlike playfulness), often with a touch of wild hair dye. She's inexplicably obsessed with our stuffed-shirt hero, on whom she will focus her kuh-razy ntics until he learns to live freely and love madly.

I don't think the reviewer was being malicious in this case @BkWurm1

Ultimately based on other reviews I decided the book was too broody for a 5 (going on 6!) yr old anyway! Actually probably too broody for my kid in general.

Context is everything!  :D

Glad he's still loving his books!

I loved it, but it is definitely a dark and moody story. There are some lighter parts, and many of the main characters are very likable and fun to root for, but it IS a story about child prostitutes being murdered in Victorian New York. Its definitely creepy and disturbing at various parts. But its also really well written, acted, filmed, and the sets and costumes are wonderful. It also gives a lot of spark to characters who might otherwise be cliches.

Jess from New Girl definitely had a Manic Pixie Dream Girl personality (cute, quirky, lovably clumsy) but she doesn't have that role in the story (she is one of the protagonists, and not just a one note love interest).

This world is so weird sometimes!

I am a huge fan of Russian skater Evgenia Medvedeva and follow her career quite diligently. Anyways she is like the Felicity Smoak of figure skating. Beloved and obsessed over by her fans but there is this bizarre group (oddly enough with their own hostile forum where they have meltdowns over anything she does) that lies in wait with pitch forks whenever she breathes. According to them she is responsible for all evil in this world with her "bad" jumping and "bad" programs. The parallels really make me shake my head.

I had a similar conversation last week with a friend I made back in the Smallville days.  She said she's come to realize that everything we complain about happening in fandoms is found (to varying degrees) in any and all kinds of groups, factions, and organizations.  Pick something people care about.  You have another group that is against it for some reason.  Fandom and shipping is not some dirty exception.  Fandom IS the world.

The day Alina Zagitova had a meltdown at Worlds I could not log onto the ice skating forum due to too much traffic!

I felt about as awful for her as when Olicity broke up and I was all suspicious and paranoid during end of S4 and early S5 (actually even more because I really like her and wanted her get a double gold with her crazy backloaded program which I think is awesome no matter what anyone says).

I’m six episodes into The Alienist and I’m liking it more as it goes on. It’s absolutely horrifying and I’m woman enough to admit I raise a hand before the screen when a new body shows up, but the case is getting interesting and I like all the actors basically. And I have a tendre for Sara and John. If it’s hopeless, don’t tell me. I love how together, yet not unaffected she is, and how he’s basically just such a good, compassionate dude under whatever issues he has because of his family and broken engagement. I wouldn’t go as far as saying I like Laszlo, but he’s definitely interesting.

This is the first time in his life that my kid has a bad cough and his party is on Sunday *cries*

Hubs and I are taking turns on cough duty. I told him I'll write and go until 4am before we switch.

Children are hard! How does anyone survive with more than one??????

***

On another note I was discussing Crazy Rich Asians with someone who introduced me to the idiom

“I’d rather cry in a BMW than smile on a bicycle.”

She saw it on a Chinese dating game show!

hehe I quoted it to Hubs who looked absolutely horrified and said of course he would chose the bike.
