S02.E13: Tearjerker

Det. Rivers was cartoonishly over-the-top.  It was nice to see Elsbeth aassert herself multiple times with him, even before she invoked her actual reason for being at the police department. Jordana Brewster as Chloe was very good; although I figured out that she had administered the fatal dose at the victim's request, I though it was to spare him the embarrassment of the trial.

I thought it was a little strange that on Elizabeth's first visit to Chloe, she was allowed to overlap with her next client; you'd think she'd be more discreet, but maybe she knew the client wouldn't care.

So the wife got financial control, but the architect husband had hidden away enough money to buy a 10 million dollar Cezanne?

Kaya will need a new wardrobe once she becomes a detective.  I wonder if she'll go shopping with Elsbeth.

The 'new' detective was cartoonish, and I don't mean in a good way.  I hope his time is done.

Spend a bit more time with the officer who is 'overseeing' them and appears to be on the spectrum.  He is interesting and has shown some interesting moments recently.

I do want to see Kaya in her new role, BUT I do not want her to go away to a new district

This episode felt very odd to me.  It felt very ... I dunno... enthralled with the Chloe of it all.  She was just so very glamorous and chic and rich and every man wanted her.  Heck, Elsbeth was almost apologetic to her for having to arrest her because she cried before helping the guy kill himself and framing his wife.

Meanwhile, I thought the wife got a raw deal.  It isn't as if she were a trophy wife who married him for his money.  She said she was the one that put him through school.   It just felt weird that the writing seemed so sympathetic toward Chloe because she loved a selfish asshole.  But felt kinda judgemental and dismissive toward the wife because she was apparently trying to stop him from ruining them.

Just felt weird.

And then on top of that we had the most incompetent, buffoon character of a "detective."  Yeah, I get that he is a nepo baby, but even so he was just over the top  bad.

Yeah, this one was a dud  for me.

I didn't feel like the show itself gave the wife a raw deal. Elsbeth and Kaya were both protective of her at the crime scene while Nepo Detective was being obnoxious. The Captain also sent in Elsbeth when he could, to replace Nepo Detective from further scaring and questioning her.

The show did spend more time with Chloe, but I think that was in part due to the uphill battle of getting the audience to look past the escort aspect of the character to actually sympathize, if not empathize with the Chloe as a human being. The show did a decent job of "showing, not telling" that Chloe was charismatic and enthralling enough to pull off everything described--including the fact that she deeply cared about the man she euthanized.

I quite enjoyed the Captain's reading of the poem, it even got me a bit teary.

Chloe's comment that in another life they might have been friends made me realize that it's been awhile since Elsbeth's befriended the killer--most have been annoyed and feigned politesse. Add that to the changes this season, like no women as the murder victims.

Wendell Pierce was on The Late Night Show (Colbert) last week, and recited some lines from Shakespeare.  He has a varied career history on stage and TV.

As for the building problems, I recently read an article about a chef who works in a building just like the one on Elsbeth, and it might have been the model for it.  The article stated that many nights there are just a few people (if any) in the building's exclusive resident only restaurant, and that a high percentage of owners were from foreign countries, and had never lived in the building.  I'm sure the views are spectacular, but I'm not sure I want to live that high off the ground.
