Baylen Out Loud all episodes

Recommended Posts

I don't know what to make of this.  They promoted it very heavily, so I tried to watch the first episode but could not complete it.  It seems they are trying to get in as many crazy/funny outbursts as they can.  I am torn between feeling she is being exploited and feeling it sheds light on a problem.   It comes from the same roots as I Am Jazz, but she seems to have a less problematic family.

These TLC shows are so cookie-cutter: Find a person or group with something "different" (trans, 600lb, a bunch of kids, strict religion, little person, etc.), then make sure they have an available stock of friends or family on the sidelines to throw into the mix in order to pad out the episode because most of these TLC "stars" don't have the rizz to keep an audience riveted for a solid hour. These 'extra' people are also good to be there when the producers set up the phony premise of the week, like a party or operation or conference, so the main subject has someone to interact with.

This show checks all the boxes. Already it is annoying with the family interviews, the boyfriend drama, a shopping and chatting montage, watching while the girl and her BF chat at the dog spa. It doesn't help that the main girl Baylen evokes no empathy - she just seems bratty.

I don't think Baylen is bratty at all. She's very thankful for her family and her boyfriend. I knew someone with Tourette's and she had the same of tics that Baylen does. It's important to raise awareness of invisible disabilities since some people may not realize that they exist. I think it's great that Baylen wants to be independent although I understand why her parents are concerned.

I’m glad to see the thread as I’m watching the show. I think it’s much better than most of the other TLC shows about toxic relationships.

Hopefully , it’s a way for Baylen to make some income, since I imagine working a regular job might be challenging.  Still, there doesn’t seem to be any reason Baylen couldn’t get online college education. Is she doing that?

I fell asleep last night and missed that episode.  Will try to catch up.

I feel bad for Baylen and her parents. I noticed they need to put child safety locks on in the car, there must be a fear of her jumping out. I felt worried for her in the last episode where her friend was driving and she kept reaching over to honk the horn and touch her friend. I would have some fear of her grabbing the steering wheel.

Of course she wants the same things others do and I hope she can live independently some day. As she is now I don’t think she can be alone with a baby but treatments change !

I agree she needs to control her tics before she can be independent. I think Baylen might have the brain surgery that was discussed in this episode. Baylen is a clone of her mom.

I get this is a 'reality' TV show, but this hits differently. I don't watch TikTok, so I had no idea who she was until I started seeing the ads for it. I've seen other shows over the years about Tourettes, but watching her navigate her life and how her family navigates it is interesting and educating. She seems good-hearted and finds levity in something that I can't imagine how exhausting, both physically and mentally, that must be for her. And the same could be said for her family. I understand this is just a tiny glimpse into her world, but so far, it's been worth the watch.

They live in West Virginia but both parents and Baylen have a strong Michigan/Midwest accent. They must have spent most of their lives there before the dad got a job in DC. Just thought that's interesting.

The family seems really fun and likeable. That said I have the same issue with this show as Shauna Rae. Granted it's TLC so the exploitation is expected, but I don't like the chosen medium to showcase her struggles mainly being zooming in on people in public oogling her (or more than likely, not even her, but the camera crew following them around).

Episode 3 was good though, because it felt a little more 'real' and showed her speaking on a forum with other people with tourettes. I think with her social media following she really is an inspiration to other people with TS. Her TS is also different because the echolalia is really present. A lot of her tics are funny things related to her immediate surroundings or pop culture instead of random noises.

I do think the producers are creating scenarios to take advantage of her tourettes. Her tics are exacerbated by stress. Like this episode, knowing she would be tired but timing it so they arrived for tic con without much time to prepare so they were rushing, and sending her up there to speak completely unprepared. I don't see why they couldn't have arrived the day before so she would be well rested and could better prepare. Seemed very deliberate.

I have a cousin who’s adult son has Tourette’s, but I haven’t been around him enough to notice any tics.  I think he’s quite gifted and a talented writer.  He’s also quite OCD about a lot of things, like Baylen is.

When Baylen says meds helped the tics but she didn’t like the way they made her feel and stopped taking them….I was shocked.  In light of her extreme case of Tourette’s, I would expect treatment would be welcomed despite it having some side effects.  There’s always a cost benefit analysis, but man.  The way she’s going, her muscles are going to be strained really bad.  I also wonder about all the head motions and how that might impact your brain.  I can see how the electrical brain stimulation would be a good option.  It didn’t seem that she was interested in it though.  I hope the therapist can help.

From what I read online both of the parents grew up in Ogdensburg, New York (near the Canadian border). I don't know how long they have lived in West Virginia but I don't think they have any connection to Michigan or the Midwest.

I have TS and even wrote a book about my experiences growing up with it.  I had never heard of Baylen, never watched her on social media.  So I went into this cold.  I heard some comments that she was faking or exaggerating her TS, and I am well aware of TLC's horrid reputation with their reality shows.  But I went in with an open mind.  So far, I am okay with the show.  I wonder if some things were playing to the camera, like saying "I have a gun" in the TSA line.  Vocal tics are completely random so 99% of the time you aren't going to say the thing that has maximum comedic effect.  I found Baylen to be very likeable, which was a concern of mine with the way the ads promoted the show.  Most people who have tics try the best we can to mask or minimize them, not let them all hang out, which was how the ads presented it.. "I ticked again, Oops!"

But when Baylen talks to the camera she feels very natural, and I like that they have other people with TS on the show who are very genuine, so to this point the show is bringing some positive awareness to sufferers of TS.  I just hope TLC doesn't wreck it, as they are known to do in order to get ratings.

Thought I would take a look after staying away from it because of how I've felt with other TLC shows like this but was pleasantly surprised. Baylen seems very genuine when she talks, and I doubt very much that the TSA would be onboard with her saying she had a gun just for a tv show so I'm going out on a limb in saying that was a genuine tic. Her sister saying about how the one girl kept staring was most likely a re-enactment of the last time they went to the place though.

If I think the tics are set up in any way I'll be out so I hope they're not.

Well, close enough lol. Hearing their accents I figured it would be somewhere near the Canadian border.

She is definitely very likeable and good on camera, you can see why she's so popular. But I do still feel like they are playing off her tics. However it also seems like she is on the more extreme end of the spectrum as far as TS. I think that therapist gave her good advice when she was teaching her to hold up a finger when she feels a tic come on but we haven't really seen her apply that technique. I would like to see more of that because she clearly isn't comfortable with the surgery yet and doesn't like being medicated all the time.

I am surprised to see the current storyline about Baylen trying to move in with Collin. He was waiting to find out where his next military assignment would be for training. Why are they considering this major change when his future is unsettled?

Apparently she lives in Kansas with Colin as of 2025  So I assume that's where his assignment ends up being not DC? It may be revealed in later episodes. https://www.wtrf.com/west-virginia/west-virginia-native-lands-show-on-tlc-following-fame-on-tiktok-showcasing-life-with-tourette-syndrome/

I wouldn't recommend surgery to anyone with TS.  Anything that touches the brain really.  As for medication, none of it that I've seen is very effective.  They either turn you into a drooling zombie or have risky side effects.  I took clonidine as a teenager but it lowers your blood pressure and after getting dizzy from taking it several times I said no more.  There isn't any technique I see that is effective either.  It basically comes down to, do you try and suppress it or let it go?  If you suppress it, it doesn't go away and actually gets worse.  It's like if you have a kettle boiling on the stove and you cover the release valve.  You stopped the steam from coming out, but now pressure is building in the kettle until the lid pops off.  That's what it's like suppressing tics.  But people understandably don't want to draw attention to themselves, especially in public, so they try to suppress it as much as they can.

I hated this episode with the boyfriends parents pushing their religion on Baylen. Yeesh.  Also the bike riding segment -- those parents treat her like a toddler.

Are people with Tourettes eligible for SSI/Disability because I presume it could be hard to get a job. Will TLC cover her rent?   I can guess that the rest of the episodes will play out with the countdown to Baylen's military boyfriend possibly being shipped out.

Baylen seems very childlike, likely because her parents treat her like one. We only see a small snippet of her relationship with Colin but it all seems like a lot of silly stuff. I’m not sure I can imagine her taking care of a house, and being away from her parents. She does need to learn more independence. I assume she makes enough from the show and her social media stuff so she doesn’t need a job but it would be cool to see her pursing something she loves.

Tourette's is a neurological disorder so it would be covered by SSI. I think Baylen's parents are doing the best they can she was diagnosed as a teenager instead of a child.  I think things would be different if she had been diagnosed as a child.

The last episode did seem like they were talking up the surgery but the success rate isn't high enough for such an invasive surgery so it seems like it would truly be a last resort and I don't blame her for not wanting a drill in her brain. It does suck that there aren't more options for people with TS than powerful psyotropics and surgery. Baylen mentioned CBD gummies to get through her nail appointments. I wonder if medical marijuana has some efficacy.

She wasn't diagnosed till adulthood 18. That's crazy to me! Honestly I think she probably makes enough on the show, TikTok, and her media appearances that she doesn't have to worry about SSI.

If people are still working from home, that might be a good job option for her.  (I'm retired, so I don't know, though I'd have hated working from home.)

So, he is going to shut himself away in a room for hours while she runs the household on her own? Well, she couldn't handle the couch delivery because she is used to having everything done for her, so I guess he better get used to being interrupted every 5 minutes.

Her TikTok makes good enough money for now (it's big enough to have been found by TLC), but I don't know what she's capable of beyond that.

From the preview, it looks like Baylen's parents want her to consider the treatments that she's balked at before. She needs something just to help with her sensory issues and go from there.

I'm hate watching at this point; I get no sincerity from this show.  I find myself checking all the little things that are supposed to seem spontaneous, like when they go home goods shopping and they walk in like anyone would off the street but there are cameras already in the store as Baylen walks in. The producers of this show are hacks.

Baylen and BF are moving into their new apartment with the whole family helping and, just by chance, a thunderstorm rolls in. Who would have guessed that thunder triggers Baylen! The sounds make her cover her ears and the stress causes her leg and foot to twist into a pretzel and she gets locked in this position. She's bent over like a crippled deer as mom, dad and BF all stand around giving her concerned looks and attention.

It couldn't be just a normal "moving day" episode... Baylen's life is a constant source of drama!

The apartment is beautiful but makes no sense to move into a glass wall house if you are triggered by thunderstorms or tried to smash the shower glass!

Realistically how else are they supposed to film it?  It's no different than any of the other reality shows.  If you're going to film their lives you have to set up the cameras. You can't have a camera guy walking backwards in front of them at all times. It doesn't work that way. Also, mics are used to amplify their voices.  That's the only way to get quality footage and it's edited later.

I don’t mind the concept of reality shows. Also, staging is usually a big part of them. Some are more contrived than others.  They don’t normally follow the format of a raw documentary.  I have no issue with your show being your job either. A traditional job might be challenging for Baylen. I do wonder about her lack of development.

Granted, she has medical conditions that cause her challenges, but it seems there’s a whole lot of focus on her as an incapable, disabled person who cannot survive without caregivers.  Is that true?  Some of her problems seem unrelated to Tourettes. Yes, I realize she also has OCD and anxiety. They can be treated.

What’s this talk about rock bottom?  Spoon feeding her? Why?  Imo, the focus should be more promotion of her independence. And transferring her care to a partner or spouse seems odd too.   Maybe, explore an inpatient program where she’s with a whole set of people, including professionals who can provide support, care and  guidance so she can be more self reliant.  She’s very used to being the center of  attention in her family.  And, I don’t mean her tics are intentional.  I do find her very vested in the dynamics of her being the center of everything.  The parents’ focus seems to feed it.

In a way it seems like she might do better away from her parents.  It appears very co-dependent.  There’s way too much attention devoted to her tics.  I really hope she’s able to get better. And, not just the tics .

I feel for Collin. I think he may not realize she expects the same attention from him as her parents. And, when she doesn’t get it, it won’t go well.   A caregiver role can change the relationship.  Best of luck to him and them as a couple.

It’s pretty good as far as TLC shows go.  It’ll probably get another season.

All reality shows are the same.  They have to get permission from the store or restaurant to film.  They have to get a permit from the city to film.  Then they set up their equipment to film the show.  Did you see the set up in Baylen's room when she was filming her talking head?  The camera swung around to show a huge set up of equipment.  No show can be filmed spontaneously.

I'm a nitpicker about certain things and the way reality shows skew "reality" is something I can't help but notice.   I wasn't targeting this show specifically - I had the same thing bug me when I used to watch Ina Garten's show on Food Network.  Ina would ask her husband to run into town for some cheese for the recipe she was making...spontaneous-like.   We watch Jeffrey get behind the wheel, pop into a cheese shop and wow! there's a camera there to record the whole interaction.   I understand why it's done like this but still, it's my issue.

I agree with all this and more. The relationship with her parents is absolutely codependent. No way she is mature enough to get married. That couch debacle was ridiculous. If you are not mature enough to receive a couch delivery without melting down, you are not mature enough to be in an adult relationship. Collin spent the day trying to come up with a surprise to make her laugh and she was an absolute b*#ch to him, throwing a tantrum at her party.

I certainly appreciate the toll it takes having a person with a disability in the family.  I know this first hand, however they seem to have created this bigger than life drama revolving around Baylen’s issues.  And somehow it doesn’t seem to be just for the tv show.  The parents seem to believe they are responsible for Baylen, instead of her being responsible for herself.  There doesn’t seem to be any reason she can’t do that, except for her parents taking over and looking at things from a worst case scenario.

When my special needs niece was 4 years old, I worked with her on various tasks.  Her favorite phrase from that point was  “I did it by myself!”  Self reliance is critical for everyone, so all the focus on protection instead of growth needs more balance, imo.  Maybe, life skills lessons would be helpful for Baylen.  Handing the reins over to Collin seems concerning to me.

This was the first episode of a reality TV show that I've ever really, truly cringed at in a while. Watching the whole couchgate meltdown, I'm truly embarrassed for her.

Sure, Colin spending all day trying on cowboy outfits instead of being there to help her move in knowing how overwhelmed she gets probably wasn't the best choice to make, especially when he could've done that the day or week before, but sheesh, she has such poor emotional regulation by publicly humiliating him in front of everyone. Then again, it's a show so who knows how contrived things are.

They definitely coddle her and I'm sure that's contributed a lot. I'm getting the feeling between how dysregulated she gets and how extreme her tics are she needs round the clock care or a more intensive CBIT therapist.

I think this show has become really popular and since she's already viral I'm willing to bet there's going to be multiple seasons.

It seems her Tourette’s didn’t emerge until she was a teen. I have MS, it emerged when I was 26. Looking back I can see things that were sort of happening they weren’t normal, but I didn’t think too much of them. When I woke up one day and couldn’t see right, I went to the eye doctor. 5 minutes into the appointment, he told me it was neurological and I needed to get my ass to a doctor for a neurologist referral. She might have had little things that she did that didn’t full on present themselves as Tourette’s…. Until they did.

I'm not watching, but I have been interested in the claim that young women are basically developing Tourettes as a social contagion that started during the pandemic on TikTok. I don't see it mentioned in this discussion yet and was wondering if anyone else has thought about this in relation to Baylen. If you aren't familiar, here's one article, but there are many others.

I have, but decided to accept the show as it’s offered. True, that most Tourette’s is diagnosed in childhood and more pronounced in children than adults, but if she was diagnosed at The Mayo Clinic, that’s good enough for me.

This family reminds me of another TLC show (that seems to have not been renewed.)

I've forgotten the name of it but it was a 20-ish year old woman who looked/talked like a very young girl. She too, had controlling/codependent parents. IIRC her stepdad did puppet shows for a living.

Anyway, I'll watch Baylen for now but I can feel the boredom setting in already.
