Haleth November 11 Share November 11 Bingo. Ana just voiced exactly what I’ve been saying for the past week. You think things are expensive now? Wait until there are no migrant workers on farms, factories, and construction sites. (Add in the tariff and we’re all screwed.). I laughed at her response to friends afraid of losing their nannies. Whoopi shows her ignorance every time she starts babbling about taxes. 15 1 Link to comment

Child care and also care in general will be affected. It's not just nannies for rich people day care centers have immigrants working there. Not to mention home health care for seniors. That is going to affect a lot of people. What happens when people can't go to work because they have their kids or an elderly family member to take care of? Unlike what JD Vance thinks not all grandparents are able to step up and take on caring for family members. Edited November 11 by bluegirl147 13 2 Link to comment
KittyQ November 11 Share November 11 Whoopi, voters don't vote on questions. They vote on issues, and in this case, the issue was that there were high numbers of undocumented immigrants entering the country while other immigrants are waiting for the proper channels. It seems clear that part of the reason that people voted for Trump was exactly to "fix" this problem. Whatever that plan is, is what the administration is going to do, so that is the answer to the question. Ana and Sunny seem perfectly ok with people they know hiring undocumented workers, when as lawyers you'd think they would advise their friends to only hire legal workers. know Sunny keeps repeating that undocumented immigrants don't commit crimes more than legal people, but she's ignoring the point - there's no way to know or at least have a good idea that any given person is not a criminal if they enter without undergoing any kind of investigation. That many people are law abiding is just luck, because we have no idea what kind of people they are if no one has even talked to them before they enter the country. How are undocumented workers paying taxes and Social Security? They wouldn't have Tax ID numbers, would they? Those are government issued and used to file the required forms. Are they using stolen or fake numbers? 12 Link to comment

You ask good questions, and I hope someone can explain how this underground economy works. These undocumented workers do a job for their employer, who pays them. We as consumers pay that employer for whatever service or product the worker provides. When they are deported, who is going to do that work? How many small businesses will go under because they can't provide services with so few "legitimate" workers left? But I don't recall Trump ever talking about fixing a problem of immigrants having to wait for proper channels. All I ever heard about were all the criminals and insane asylum residents that were coming in illegally. It was never about fixing the problem, it was about making voters fearful. 13 5 Link to comment

It makes sense that using a stolen SS# wouldn't be a problem for the person who is using it, and I can see that the IRS wouldn't much care where the taxes are coming from, at least at first, but there has to be a point where the legitimate SS# owner files their return and the numbers are off based on their actual income, wouldn't that cause problems? Also, if the person with the stolen number uses it to set up other services, what happens if the original person also needs those services and finds out that someone has already used it? Haleth November 11 Share November 11 And that’s assuming only undocumented migrants are rounded up. Legal immigrants and American citizens are likely to be expelled as well, so not only small businesses will be affected. Think about how many people are here on visas to work in agriculture? Remember what happened during the pandemic when shelves were bare? Yeah, prices of everything skyrocketed. 7 Link to comment

I don't know if Trump ever addressed that problem, but it seems to me that fixing the border / immigration issues will require someone to review the whole thing and correct the problems while improving the process - that's what any sensible person would do, IMO. I suspect, for one thing, that if the legal process didn't take so long, people wouldn't become frustrated enough to "jump the line". Unfortunately, some of those people are probably not upstanding people and just take advantage of any opportunity to get into the country without anyone scrutinizing them. Link to comment

Apologies - I didn't mean to suggest that you said it was victimless; I think that some people might conclude that because the tax money gets to the IRS no matter what. Maybe not master criminals, for sure, but still law breakers. As with most illegal schemes, most of the people who suffer the consequences will be the "little fish" not the ringleaders, whoever they are. 1 Link to comment

It's those employers that undercut unions and cause a lot of the anger some people have for immigrants. In my local area whenever there is a big construction job people start saying they are hiring undocumented immigrants. I have no idea if it's true or not but that is what people think. It will be a nightmare all around. Folks who think prices are coming down will be sadly disappointed when there are no workers and supply goes down. https://chatgpt.com 1 1 Link to comment

We're talking about 2 different things at the same time & the conversation seems to have got a little confusing. If they have a work permit then they can work & will usually get a SS# not much later. KittyQ was asking specifically about undocumented people working & how they get SS#s to which I was answering as I've had direct contact with both legal & illegal aliens (I hate that word) as I am a legal alien myself even though I have been here for 20 years. After7only was, I believe, answering the question from the standpoint of someone seeking asylum which would make them legal & nothing to do with the original question. It's all very complicated but Trump & his cohorts have made it so that all immigrants are bad people & coming to steal your jobs which is what people have latched onto, even though very few of them would do the jobs immigrants both legal & illegal actually end up doing. 6 Link to comment

The undocumented workers do not collect anything in return for social security payments taken from their paychecks. Sometimes when they're granted a path to citizenship, they even have to pay back taxes they avoided. I really don't know how this all works. I'd like to learn more. But I do know the prices of produce and housing construction will rise when these workers are deported. Americans pay much less for their food than in other countries, largely because the undocumented workers are paid so much less for their labor. 4 hours ago, debbie311 said: Of all the panel, I feel that Ana is the one I agree with the most - her sit back and watch it burn down attitude. I don't like sunny...but her asking the question isn't what lost Kamala the election. It was Kamala's answer that sealed it. It told voters she liked his policies, or she was the one to get him to do those policies. And I like Ana's approach....it's what I did four years ago when Biden and Harris won. I wanted to see how they would do...and they didn't horribly...but it.was not the return to moderate politics as people hoped. And it's funny some people voted for both AOC and Trump. While they don't agree on anything, they're more alike personality wise then either admit. So when people told her that was one of the reasons...I laughed. 1 Link to comment
