AnimeMania October 9 Share October 9 (edited) The weather was really weird snowy, then sunny. I am surprised that nobody mentioned to the kid that his father was dead. What was the point of the Desrosiers confronting Zoe at the hardware store? Were they trying to get her to call her brother or to give them some money. Were the Desrosiers trying or not trying to kill Ben, it didn't really make sense. The fire/smoke shouldn't have been that dangerous since all the smoke should have gone through the open roof. It should have been about as dangerous as a campfire. Edited October 9 by AnimeMania 4 Link to comment
sundaytunes October 9 Share October 9 Katic's accent threw me off too. Wonder what she was going for? 5 Link to comment

I also thought that it was inconsistent - more accent with the boy and less with the adults. 6 Link to comment
zapper October 9 Share October 9 I think that the show is just bad direction. Stana Katic is a much better actress than this episode showed. I also don't believe that Rossif Sutherland is that somnambulist - it has to be the directing. There was also that weird apology by the female cop about her behaviour in the hotel room when she did nothing wrong other than search further than the first cop. It's a shame, I kind of imagined this series being a Canadian version of the Jesse Stone ilk. But it just isn't, in oh so many ways. 6 Link to comment
AnimeMania October 9 Share October 9 I don't know how Stana Katic thought she would get away with the arson/ murder of the little boy, she left the gas can on the ground next to the building and threw in a metal lighter with her fingerprints all over it. 5 Link to comment
Chaos Theory October 9 Share October 9 (edited) I am not sure what this show is trying for. It is not a romance and it is barely a murder mystery. I actually liked Stana Katic character in this. Don’t care even a little about a bad accent. I would 100% be fine with a horrible accent if this show was better but it’s so…..bad. Stana Katic was the best thing in the episode. Edited October 9 by Chaos Theory My auto edit refuses to Spell Stana Katic name right 2 Link to comment
Chaser October 9 Share October 9 I think this is the strongest of the episodes so far. Not to say it was that strong altogether cause I still don’t really now what it’s trying to be. They need to tighten it up. I think it helped to pull back on the romance. They need to work on that slowly but they also need to give Cassandra more to do. Loved seeing Nathan from Haven but it was such a random role. I got excited about the daughter showing up and then that was it. I kept waiting for them to appear again. Maybe the writing got out of hand and they had to cut for time? Great to see Stana again. I didn’t expect her to be a psycho. The quasi accent was a choice for sure. Oh and the kid getting trapped in a frame of a building was an interesting moment. I will tune in next week for further bewilderment. 4 4 Link to comment

With a little of Moira from Schitt's Creek thrown in. 2 hours ago, Chaos Theory said: I am not sure what this show is trying for. It is not a romance and it is barely a murder mystery. 12catcrazy October 9 Share October 9 I liked less romance in this episode but yeah, wtf Stana Katic? It sounded to me like she kept lapsing into her real accent but very briefly. The case was a no-brainer as we knew what happened to the brother - so I assume that part of the "fun" here is to watch the hero figure it out (?). I don't mind watching this show as it is doesn't involve any teeth gnashing or real worry for about the fate of the folks in the police dept, but my SO is getting sick of it pretty quickly (he was hoping for more of a Jesse Stone show) so I don't know how much longer I'll be watching it. Sometimes you have to pick your battles when it comes to TV viewing... 2 Link to comment
blackwing October 9 Share October 9 If this show is supposed to be a procedural, this was the best episode so far. The mystery was well done, even if it was obvious. If this show is supposed to be somewhat of a cozy mystery (solving of crimes with romance thrown in), it didn't do so well with this episode. Cassandra was barely in the episode. There was the weird ex-boyfriend / actor who seemed to think she was with him. She tells her friend that she's "with Karl" but she barely sees or talks to Karl? She was waiting for him outside his house on some weekday and he said "I was gonna call you" like they haven't talked to each other in days. 18 hours ago, fastiller said: What kind of voice/accent is Katic going for? She seemed to be trying to cover up a natural accent, so decided her character's persona and accent was going to be "haughty rich superior socialite"??? It was very odd considering the brother (presumably raised in the same environment as her) didn't sound anything like that. 18 hours ago, AnimeMania said: What was the point of the Desrosiers confronting Zoe at the hardware store? I think it was just a red herring, to make viewers think that the Desrosiers killed or were going to kill Ben and were now after her. They were trying to recover their money from him, but maybe they knew that he didn't have any. I guess they wanted to flex and threaten her and show her that they were dangerous so she better give Ben the money? I didn't understand why Karl didn't just crash through the window to escape. And for a structure that was just frame, she sure worked quickly to put up all the walls in a day, in between killing her brother and searching for the diary and kidnapping her nephew. 5 Link to comment
Chaser October 9 Share October 9 I read it as Zoe gave up her brother to the cousins to protect her secret. I think she only physically killed the old woman and attempted to kill her nephew. Her accent sounded old school femme fatale. 4 Link to comment
kaygeeret October 9 Share October 9 I wasn't paying close attention, but I thought she was projecting the fact that she actually didn't give a damn about anyone and that she tried to appear 'normal' when neede. Her pitch and tone seemed to reflect that to me. When she co starred in Castle she had a perfectly normal speech pattern, pitch and cadence. Not only do they need a new director, they also need a new showrunner and BETTER WRITERS!!!!! We really have no idea what the actors can actually do when they have decent material. Well we do have an idea with Kanic because of Castle. 2 Link to comment
Snazzy Daisy October 10 Author Share October 10 It’s so good to see Stana Katic on my screen again. The last time I saw her was in Absentia. Quote “You look like a roasted pig.” Zoe Strachan going full psycho on her nephew is dissociatively insane. Anything to protect her secret. I like the reverse interrogation scene. It highlights Stana Katic’s onscreen charisma while showing how bland Rossif Sutherland is. Gosh, Karl should’ve let Elsie gives him a new haircut. The lack of romance in this episode is refreshing but the star of the show cannot be disregarded on a regular basis. 3 Link to comment
zapper October 10 Share October 10 since this episode has so much good stuff to dig into WRT WTF moments .... I only saw the last half or so, but at the end there was a scene at Alberg's place where Cassandra laughs at his building project, something about him not have much experience at that sort of thing. well that deck (or whatever) looked pretty good to me: level, with proper 2x10 joists, bracing blocks, proper framing and supports. I've put up a few and I didn't see anything that shrieked danger or bad build. oh well. 2 2 Link to comment

blackwing October 10 Share October 10 The other weird thing about the actor ex, he came all the way back home to try and win her back? After all this time? Wouldn't he have called first and wouldn't she have told him they were just friends? That was just bad bad writing. I did enjoy Karl and Cassandra's conversation at the end, even if the setup is weird. He returns home after escaping the fire, she is waiting for him. He seemed surprised she was there. Have these people never heard of texting? "Just heard about the fire... are you ok?" "Yeah, gonna head home and take a shower and go to bed." "I want to see you, I'll meet you there." I did enjoy her "Eau de Mephistopheles" line. 3 Link to comment

I think (think??) the actor ex was still in town from after the high school reunion that was last week's episode. However, the terrible writing didn't make that totally clear. 5 1 Link to comment

Badsamaritan October 11 Share October 11 Aw, I like the show. It's one of the few I'm watching in real time. I don't know who Jesse Stone is but this show is giving me more 'Twin Peaks' vibes than a straight-up procedural. Everyone is slightly weird, slightly off. And I like it. Stana scared me, so good job lol. I liked when Alberg was talking to the neighbor who accused Stana's character of killing her dog and Alberg asked if she was scared of her and she's all 'No!' And Alberg looks at her like 'Are you sure?' And then she says 'yes'. There's something kinda sexy about Rossif Sutherland to me. And, I understand what's happening with Cassandra - they had a brief date but then slept together and realized they do kinda like each other for real, so now they're trying to figure out the actual 'relationship' part. Been there. I think the whole purpose of Alberg getting overcome by the smoke was so Sid could save him. Sid appears to be the jolly, happy deputy but he is competent and he has Alberg's back, always. I'm gonna keep watching. 13 Link to comment
andromeda331 October 12 Share October 12 I want to like this show but it doesn't seem to know what it is. I like the murder and mystery part of the show. I like Karl and Yen. I didn't like the other guy upset that Yen did a better job searching the motel room. I laughed them not knowing what to do with the cassette tape and then later the tape deck. I don't like the romance. It's weirdly boring and going to fast. They sleep together in the first episode, then she's taking him to her high school reunion and worried about being seen in public together. She was worried about that again in this episode. Why? I don't see any sparks between them or anything. I agree with another poster she needs more to do. She really doesn't do anything and I just don't get her. 2 1 Link to comment

Johannah October 15 Share October 15 I was also going to say I got weird Twin Peaks vibes, especially with this episode. I like that. Makes more sense than trying to put it in a regular procedural box. Glad we didn't have much Cassandra, especially any romantic interactions with Karl.
