S01E17: The First Date Is the Deepest

Figured they would keep Ben Hollingsworth for more than an episode since he’s pretty recognizable. Wondering where poor Chuck is, but this is the first episode I found Allison enjoyable in so maybe she will finally not be written as a sad Eeyore. Her refusing to get grilled by her mother in court was hilarious.

Allison is still “a sad Eeyore” to me.

They sure telegraphed the sociopathic killer to the audience.

This is such a silly show but I love it. No way the defense attorney's daughter could be used as a witness. It was such a kangaroo courtroom scene, Allison acting like a petulant child and Margaret telling her "You'll testify when I tell you to young lady!" LOL. Also got a huge kick out of Kyle and Lyle.

I wonder  . . . if Margaret is passed over for partner in her firm, maybe she will start her own firm, and take Todd with her, along with Lyle (and Kyle?). And maybe Susan. I think that might be fun. Maybe they'd even pull Allison in as medical consultant or something. The show seems to struggle a bit incorporating Allison into the show, IMO.

I doubt we've seen the last of Gus.

I recognized the actor who played Dr. Woods from Virgin River. I wonder if he'll be a new love interest for Allison.

One of my favorite older rom-coms is "Chances Are".  In it, Ryan O'Neal appears in a short, ladies bathrobe.  My eyes almost popped out when the show said that Gus looked like Ryan O'Neal in that pink bathrobe -- super obscure reference and as a Chances Are major-fan, I loved that little sly line.

The legal stuff was so spectacularly bad I think I blacked out for a moment.

During my unconsciousness, I wondered if Eliza Coupe's character might be an older one of her one from Scrubs, putting these in the same universe.

On coming to, I enjoyed Allison having something to do, the Kyle/Lyle gag was cute, and we got more development on the implausible name partner chase as Todd fell into the web of the clearly evil senior partner. If the show would just stay out of the court room it would improve so much, though.

Heh. I momentarily wondered if the Night Court writers had swapped places for this episode for April Fools Day.
But, IMO, Marcia Gay Harden had the acting chops to deliver the ridiculousness of it.
And so many other dramedies are too short on the comedy.

I can't be more specific, but sometimes it feels like the show operates on Scooby-Doo logic, and I'm also loving it. The show is stupid silly fun, and I'm okay with that.

I enjoyed Margaret's love story and I hope they can make the relationship work.

The only thing I don't particularly like about the show is the will they-won't they anvil for Todd and Susan. I don't think there's much chemistry there or that they make a good match. I wish the show would let that go.

That’s a really good idea, and I did think about her striking out on her own, but there are a couple of problems. First, not having made partner, she has no chops to draw clients. Second, I don’t see Lyle coming along on such a risky venture. Third, I’m not sure she has the capital to do that. But my Pollyanna loves the idea.

I think she knee-jerked at the revelations on the date. Damn Todd’s impulsive need for NOW! He could have waited until the date was over. I believe her fears of “as MY boss” were unfounded. He’s obviously not into work power struggles,  but she sees that as totally alien, where men are concerned, so doesn’t trust him.

He and MGH were both main characters in “Code Black”.  I knew as soon as I saw his face that she’d save him.

I have to say that of all the episodes so far, this is my fave. When I saw the trailers during the last week, I couldn’t help but think they are trying to project a “Sarandon”-like character (The Client), where she jumps in to help the downtrodden. If she makes partner, she’ll end up with clients she doesn’t necessarily want to defend. (Careful what you wish for.)

Yes they were in Code Black together! I loved that show.

Of all the cancellations that broke my heart, that was THE worst. What an ensemble!

I normally don't watch medical shows because of something I call "bad medicine".  The implausibility of the medical scenes.  Tonight I noted that there is no way they would allow all the courtroom into an operating room, without having at least foot wear and masks on.  At most scrubs also. That is a clean area and street gear is not allowed for  a purpose.

Also the law aspect was ridiculous also, but show are the law and order franchises lately.

Dear show runners:

First, PLEASE stop trying to make Todd and Susan happen. I'm usually all over a love story, but this is not it. Todd had way more chemistry with the podcast host.

Second, please do NOT mess up Margaret and Gus; I love those two together.

Third, I would be all in for Kyle coming on board to torment Todd, too.

Thank you for your consideration.

Oh, and P.S. Fourth, as ridiculous and unrealistic as the legal and medical stuff was, I really enjoyed this episode.

"Todd" borders on slapstick. Thank God no one uses laugh tracks anymore to make sure you know what was supposed to be funny.

I can't believe any doctor would murder multiple patients just to get promoted to Chief of Surgery.

I know TV shows aren't realistic, but I feel like the law stuff is so dumb on this show it makes Margaret seem like a bad lawyer.

I

So... the same show without the boss?

I like the silliness, too.  As I've said about other shows, realism isn't a huge factor for me.  Just entertain me.

I snicker a bit each time I’m reminded that the show is listed under drama, but I love it!
