Week 5: 3/5
-
Finally, a week where I had more FJ right than wrong! Disappointed that Alex lost, though it was a good, close game. New champ lost me with his gesture at the end -- that's gotta have a name, right? That "Yes!" gesture with your fist? Not being able to come up with things like this is why I'll never try out for the game! Anyway, it seemed a little like gloating. I pre-guessed Time In A Bottle for the Time Songs category -- I was glad to see that it was not only there, but that it was not a TS. Funny how they were all good at the older songs, but whiffed the newer one. As did I. TS/missed DD I got included curtain calls, seminar, neck, fig leaf, and Balloon Dog.

That was really cool, @HunterHunted! Amazing talent.

Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage
Browncoat replied to Maverick's topic in Commercials
I do. But only my door. However, if I saw the Mentos guy headed my way, I'd lock that door in a heartbeat. -
Congrats again to Alex! And FJ was an instaget for me -- I've been there, and even walked over the bridge and back. It's lovely in person. But the clue seemed a little ambiguous -- did they want the name of the bridge, or the name of the play? The bridge is "Brig O' Doon", but the play is "Brigadoon". Or would they have accepted either? I also got the TS of macrame, maelstrom, and Newfoundland. Ditto. I saw someone the other day with a Venn diagram T-shirt that had three circles labelled "Life", "The Universe", and "Everything", and where they intersected was "42". Total stranger, but I had to compliment him on it.

Why Grammar Matters: A Place To Discuss Matters Of Grammar
Browncoat replied to candall's topic in Everything Else
One of our local news readers just said that Hurricane Michael "ann-hill-iated" parts of Florida. I'm pretty sure she meant "annihilated". -
I am jealous! And I think we're about to get beaten with the topic stick.....

Not yet -- a trip there is on my list, though. But since I don't like anything pumpkin (no pumpkin pie, no pumpkin spice latte, no toasted pumpkin seeds -- they all turn my stomach), even if pumpkin juice were the most amazing thing ever, I still wouldn't like it. I am willing to try butterbeer, but I don't have high hopes for that, either.

Like the woman on tonight? She was just a little too precious and cutesy (and I'm not even talking about her nails, which were cute), and it didn't hurt my feelings that she crashed and burned. You can be cute without being cutesy. Yet another FJ I completely had no clue for. Even when Alex gave the hint after revealing the first response, I was lost. Apparently I need to brush up on mythology along with history and opera and all of the things. But at least I got Call Of The Wild! I mean, especially after the champ guessed White Fang, someone should have been able to guess the right book! That TS really surprised me. I always thought COTW was Jack London's best-known work. I also got the missed DD of airbus. I was a little distracted during the first round, so I have no idea if there even were any TS.

There's a lot about the magical world I wouldn't be best pleased with -- I want my ballpoint pens and a soda! No pumpkin juice for me, thanks.

Say What?: Commercials That Made Us Scratch Our Heads
Browncoat replied to Lola16's topic in Commercials
So at least you've got that going for you. Which is nice. -
Wasn’t that the Barnes & Noble gasses clue? I wondered about the pause before the ruling, too.

Jen was driving me insane with her vocal fry! Oddly, it was not apparent in the interview segment, but every time she picked a clue (sooooo slooooowwwwly), or responded, it made my throat hurt. I'm glad Alex got the last clue and made it a runaway. Too bad they didn't finish the board, especially the People in Science category -- I liked that one. I completely blanked on FJ, though it was a headdesk moment when the correct response was revealed. D'oh! I had it narrowed down to someone European at least. I did, however, get the TS of redwood, alpha (on a guess), and Mary Leakey. I was disappointed that none of them knew her.

I swear I have had that exact washcloth conversation!

The Andy Griffith Show - General Discussion
Browncoat replied to Maverick's topic in The Andy Griffith Show
And once he wore an old beat-up fishing hat when the state inspector came. Barney called Aunt Bee to have Opie bring a hat and tie for Andy, and that was the hat Opie brought. That was also one episode I would have liked to have seen in color — I can only imagine the true hideousness of the tie! -
Me, too. I cracked up at the women trying on all the wigs. In fact, I kind of like the friendship between the women.

I like the new champ, thought I would have been okay with the woman winning, too. Amazingly, I got FJ! I tried to think of a different response, but the correct one was all I could think of that might be remotely correct. I also got the missed DD of Blithe Spirit, but that’s all I wrote down tonight.

John Cleese never fails to deliver. Loved him harassing the tour guide. I also loved the bonding moment with Jimmy toting JJ up the stairs to the observation deck, then realizing they could have just gone to the Eye. The observation deck is actually better, though, because they can stay as long as they want -- the Eye keeps moving so your great view is more fleeting.

I don't think it's strange, either, for them to be in a retirement community. My aunt and uncle moved into one when they were mid-60s, and in perfect health. They have an apartment with a kitchen, but some meals are included in their monthly fee, so they eat in the dining room as often as not. As with @Steff's aunt, they like the community and the organized outings, though they are still independent and travel a lot on their own. As they age and become less independent, they'll transfer to the assisted living part of the community. I liked this ep better than the first one, although the guys accepted Margaret awfully quickly. Leslie Jordan is a riot -- I think he's the best part (particularly his outfit when he was jumping out of the cake -- the $400 cake!). ETA that my aunt and uncle moved in voluntarily, so that no one else would have to make that decision for them. Pretty smart of them, actually.

He didn’t accept it. He pretended to accept it, and called her father to whine, and get Dad to change Penny’s mind.
-
Sorry about that! I misread the clue and thought we were going for overall scores. :) For this week, I was 2/5, with one *.
-
I'm getting worse -- overall after tonight, I'm 9/20 with just one *.

I am so incredibly glad that Doug lost last night -- he surely would have sung every response in the Disney Songs category in the first round. And probably sung them as badly as he did the Brady Bunch song. Was rooting for Sara to win again. Adam annoyed me with the board jumping/not starting at the top, leaning, and swaying. He's a triple threat! I can honestly say I have never heard it called the Cossac whatever-it-was (though of course I've heard of D-Day -- in fact, that's my birthday, and my brother (who wanted a brother instead of a sister), never let me forget the name), so I was, once again, clueless for FJ. And I only got one TS -- wrestling. Not the best night for me.
