I was just reading the nominations again, and it occurred to me that I loved 4 of the 5 performances in the Best Supporting Actress category so much that I'm going to be happy if any of the 4 win. (I didn't see The Whale, so I can't include Hong Chau)

Just like everyone seems to know how to drive a motorcycle. Riding a horse well enough to gallop through city streets seems to be a pretty common skill, too.

I hated it. The only reason I placed it slightly above my least favorite film of the Best Picture nominees is because at least it wasn't dull. There was a lot going on. It got an 8 minute standing ovation at the Canne's Film Festival, as well as the award for best picture and best director. It's reactions like that that convince me that a movie like The Menu could have been made about the movie industry, too.

Yes, that was absolutely a "hell yeah" moment. I was just so moved by the final seconds (and a major part of that was the acting-especially from Bella) that that scene is staying with me. Like I said, she deserves nominations based on this episode alone.

Last night's episode of The Last of Us was outstanding, although really hard to watch. Bella Ramsey deserves nominations for this episode alone. The final scene is my favorite in the series so far. I'll spoiler tag it in spite of the warning in the thread title since it just came out last night.

That Burlesque scene where she sang for the first time was a real "hell yeah!" moment. It was pretty clever with the product placement, too 😉 -

Milestone Moments: All The Celebrity Vitals

Jeremy Renner posted a few seconds of part of his rehab on Instagram. (I don't know how to post something from Instagram here). He's on a stationary bike, using a strap to move the peddles while one foot is resting on it, causing his leg to go through the motion. The caption says "Whatever it takes". It's so nice to see him working his legs. The 1st night of his accident, I wondered if he'd lose one.- 4.3k replies

I saw The Fabelmans today. The production was beautiful and the acting was amazing, I thought it was too long and too slow. On my list, I'd put it below Banshees of Inisherin.

Many pages ago, I said that while I thought Black Panther was a good movie and an important movie, I didn't think it was good enough for a BP Oscar nomination. I've seen all of the Marvel movies up to Endgame at least 3 times, some I've even seen several times, and imo, if any of them were going to be nominated, it should have been Captain America: Winter Soldier.

I've seen a couple of articles saying that with no apparent from runner, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Top Gun could be a surprise winner of Best Picture at the Oscars. Ugh.

Simply, your favourite movie scenes

I'm going to spoiler tag this one because people may still be working their way through the Oscar nominated films before the show next month. In Banshees of Inisherin -
I watched Banshees of Inisherin last night and, while I didn't love it, I didn't hate it either, which is what I expected. I'm fully on board with Colin Ferrel and Kerry Condon's nominations, but not Brendan Gleeson's or Barry Keoghan's. Brendan's because he didn't move me as much as Colin and Barry's because I felt like his role, while wonderfully acted, wasn't a big enough part of the plot for that kind of recognition. Anyway, I'm planning on watching The Fabelmans before the Oscars, at which point I'll have seen all of them except Women Talking and All Quiet on the Western Front, both of which may be fantastic, but neither of which I'm really interested in seeing. Leaving out Top Gun and Avatar, which I don't think belong in the BP category, I'd rate the ones I've seen so far: Elvis EEAAO Banshees of Inisherin Triangle of Sadness* Tar* Of course, that's just based on how much I enjoyed them. If you forced me to throw in Top Gun and Avatar then, based on my enjoyment, I'd probably put Top Gun above EEAAO and Avatar after EEAAO. *Triangle of Sadness and Tar are hard ones for me to place because I didn't like either one of them, but because there was more action in Triangle, it kept my attention better, so I put it first, but honestly, there's a very slim margin between the two for me.

I had coffee with a friend last week who told me that she'd watched this the night before and hated it and didn't even know what the movie was supposed to be about. A few days later, I saw a post from an author who loved it and said that it was about the "inability of men to connect, communicate, resolve differences and forgive, and how the deficiencies lead to madness and violence." So, when I watched it last night, I kept that in mind and understood what he was saying. The writer certainly wasn't subtle about it. For all of the "it's polorizing-you love it or hate it" talk, I'm in the "It was ok" camp. Like most of these multiple award nominated movies that most people can't stop talking about, I recognize the great acting and technical brilliance here, but overall, I'm just not sure how to describe how I felt about it. I gave it an hour because my son, who loved it, asked me to give it that long. Based on the premise, I wasn't going to watch it at all because I fully expected to hate it, but after an hour, I didn't feel the urge to turn it off. I felt like it certainly dragged in some places but in other scenes it was fascinating enough to keep me interested. I'm glad I saw it, but I don't think it's a movie I would recommend to anyone in my circle of friends and I don't think I could watch it again. As for the fall out between the two men, I found myself mad at both of them on occasion, but still lean towards team Padraic because Colm angered me one too many times. Also, I could kind of relate to some of what Padraic was going through which made some of his scenes almost painful to watch.

What's ironic about people who hate her part of the story and thinking along those lines is that that was also written into the movie. Rose isn't clueless as to what people with lesser means might think about her. "I know what you're thinking 'Poor little rich girl--what does she know about misery?'". If she understood that, she already knew how trapped she would be if she went through with the marriage.

This is exactly what I thought the movie was about (except I was thinking foodies in general, although, I guess most of them are wealthy). I think he had gotten to the point where he was tired of it, which is why Margo was so successful by asking for a cheeseburger. She understood that food didn't have to be fancy to be enjoyable--in fact, sometimes it's the common things that taste the best. I think that's why they died as s'mores--it's a messy dessert made of basic, lower quality food, but so good (to many people, anyway). Odds are, they couldn't understand that because it wasn't fancy.

Amen. Austin was fantastic and deserved a nomination, imo, and Rami Malek was the best part of BoRap, so congrats to him-a well deserved win, imo, but what a slap in the face it was that Taron wasn't even nominated.

Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality
Shannon L. replied to Kromm's topic in Everything Else TV
All law enforcement agencies have at least one employee, if not more, who is capable of taking down a room of bad guys on their own. Typically, this person can also ride a horse so well that they can gallop through the city streets without incident (the same goes of high priced assassins). All school bullies and/or the kids who fight back, will at least once jump onto the lunch room tables to commence said bullying/fighting back. -
I didn't care for Everything Everywhere All at Once, but I can recognize how great it is technically--acting, directing, editing, set design, costume, make up--it was a big undertaking and the directors, actors and each department did really well.

This is exactly how I felt about it, but couldn't quite put it into words. I liked it, but I didn't love it. I felt like there was too much in the quantum realm and would like to have seen those bonding moments in our world before they went in. I also didn't like the foreshadowing by Scott at the end--that whole monologue where he was questioning if he did the right thing or made it worse. Maybe one or two throw away lines would have been ok, but there was it was too much, imo. That's what the end credit scenes are for--to get us excited for what's next. Because of that, I found the one at the very end better than the mid-credit scene.

FilmNight: Movies you watched recently

I watched Scream last night for the first time since it came out. I was impressed with how Courtney Cox was able to make her character completely different than Monica in Friends. -
Amen. I'm also someone who doesn't think that The Eternals and The Dark World were anywhere near as bad as they were made out to be and I'd still rather watch both of them any day of the week over a couple other Marvel movies. @shrewd.buddha said: Amen to this, too, but that's a conversation for another thread. I've been disappointed with the last two Marvel movies, so if this one is bad, while we'll still want to see them in a theater, they'll be relegated to discount Tuesdays at AMC instead of going out to see them one evening on opening weekend, which has been our tradition since the beginning. *How do we do multiquotes? I clicked on both of these and saw "multiquote" pop up in the bottom right corner, but wasn't able to click on it. Maybe it's my server (which hates some sites and does well with others)? Or am I missing something?

I have an app called Just Watch and according to that, WDYTYA? is on fubo tv, Discovery+ (this is listed alone and through Prime Video), TLC, and Peacock (including Peacock Premium) All seasons of FYR aren't on any one streaming service. It says that you can get 4 seasons on hoopla, 2 seasons on Direct TV, and 3 seasons on PBS (although, I tried to find it on PBS and didn't see it, so it's possible that Just Watch isn't completely accurate or updated as frequently as it should be).

The reason I watch both, even though I like one better, is because I'm embarrassingly ignorant about much of our pre-WW2 and world history so I like that I can learn about historical events now through these shows. I hated history so much I barely scraped most of the time, so I either remember the general events, but not the details or I forgot certain ones altogether. It's also true that some things we never learned about at all.
