Coronation Street - General Discussion
Jenniferbug replied to BubblingKettle's topic in Coronation Street
I'm American and have watched Corrie off and on for maybe 5 years now. Used to watch on Hulu, but now on Britbox. I wanted to watch the last year, but between Geoff and then Oliver being sick and dying, I just couldn't. I've been back watching since March and am really into it again for the moment! I love Seb and Nina. I really don't know why as I was fairly indifferent to both characters before, but I'm loving them as a pair. I can't say I really like the Alina/Tyrone/Fiz story, but I enjoy it well enough because it's good soap. Seems like it's been a while since we had a old fashioned cheating storyline. I don't hate Ty and Alina together but I don't know that it will last either. I wonder if she'll end up pregnant. If it were an American soap, she would for sure. I hope Peter gets a liver soon. I mostly like him and Carla together, and have enjoyed the Barlow family meetings. If Leanne wants Si to stay away, she probably should have gone into hiding further than a bus ride away. I'm ready for the Harvey story to wrap up, which probably means we'll be stuck with it for the next year 😆 -
I really need to work on that! I try to add them to my Goodreads list as soon as I download them so that they're on my radar. I prefer reading paper books, but the Kindle is useful to have. I just don't always think to see what I have downloaded to it when looking for something to read.

I finished The Vigilante Game by Meghan Scott Molin yesterday. It is the third in a trilogy of books. I liked it a lot, but was hoping that it would be a series rather than just a trilogy. However it seems she (or her publisher) decided it needed to wrap up. The ending felt a little rushed and there are still some unresolved explanations, but she does have a note at the end about wanting to do a prequel to explain those someday. Currently reading Forever in Cape May by Jennifer Probst which is coincidentally also the third book of a trilogy. It's a fluffy romance novel so shouldn't take too long. After that, I really need to catch up on my First Reads books. Every month I dutifully choose and download my free book, and every month I fail to read it!

I really enjoyed how light and fluffy her books were at first. But as you said, somewhere around six books in, it became very clear that the plot was going nowhere. I still read a few more after that, but they increasingly felt like the "story" was written just to get you to the next recipe page and not as any sort of actual plot. Plus it became increasingly obvious that despite Hannah supposedly being in her 30s, she was really written as much older (wearing elastic waistband pantsuits as the height of fashion, not using a cell phone much, etc). I haven't read the newest book yet, but I absolutely agree with this. The overarching plots about corruption aren't needed. The characters and a self contained mystery are enough.

Not me getting teary eyed at all the scenes with the original Ducks... I loved seeing them all so much. And it was really fun to see them on the ice again. I don't have much to say, I'm just feeling really happy nostalgia right now! My 9 year old shipper heart was happy Guy and Connie are married with kids, even if it is super unlikely.

S02.E13: The Beacon of Moonstone Island
Jenniferbug replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in Nancy Drew (2019)
Pure speculation on my part, but I've wondered if their mom won't turn up at some point with the younger set of twins. If they want to write Gil and Amanda off the show at some point, sending them to Arizona (?) where their mother and previously unknown younger siblings is a decent reason. I do like Amanda well enough. I didn't like her not really listening to Ace when he tried to open up to her, but otherwise she was ok. I'm totally fine with them reuniting Odette with Mary in the afterlife somehow too. I'm just ready for the Odette sharing George's body to wrap up. -

Not sure I really enjoyed that one. It seemed to fall flat after 3 or 4 weeks of really good episodes. Gil is terrible. Nancy is being written really inconsistently. I know they're going somewhere with it, because characters are remarking on it, but I still don't see WHY she likes Gil or WHY she's suddenly decided Celia is nice. If Gil was just some friends with benefits thing I can maybe see that, but they're basically dating and I don't see what she sees in him at all. I'm not sure where they're going with George and Odette either. It's getting to the point where I want them to wrap that up. I'm glad she and Bess decided to be friends, and I hope they don't slip up. If they can get Odette back into a body of her own, I have no problem with her and Bess together. But not while she's part of George. Please. I wish Victoria would appear once in a while for these rituals! I miss her! Also, I want to watch old movies with Odette. "They would catch typhoid!" -
I'm guessing you survived on coffee and sheer adrenaline until your husband was home again! 😆
-
Did you get the doxies at the same time? Kind of funny if you got twin puppies and then twin babies soon after! 😆

I had already adopted my dog when I met my husband so he was around when our oldest was born. He's always been very mellow, so he adjusted to her pretty well. A little jealous of someone else getting attention but was never aggressive about it. He'd come lay down next to her if she was getting attention. We got our first cat when our daughter was about 9 months old. We had no intention of getting a cat, but friends found her as a stray kitten and (long story short) she ended up with us. They were great playmates which was hilarious to watch. The cat was not so pleased when our next daughter came along a couple years later. I think she forgot how loud babies can cry. She gave the baby a lot of space and didn't really come near her till she was mobile and able to come to the cat. The dog adjusted fine again. We worked hard with the girls on "nice pets" and teaching them to stroke open handed rather than grab fur, which I think helped.

Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events
Jenniferbug replied to maraleia's topic in Counting On
Anna announced baby 7 is a girl. No due date given. (I don't know how to link the post, since a friend sent a screenshot to me.) -
All your good vibes worked! I was offered and officially accepted the job this morning! I was even able to give notice to my supervisor and manager today and both were very nice about it. Now my new manager and my current manager get to work with HR to figure out when I transition to the new position. I will still work from home, keep my PTO and benefits, AND I get a raise which is a nice perk. The new job can be a little intense so that worries me a bit, but I'm also really relieved to be out of a miserable work situation.

I'm struggling with it too. It's not sorting my follows to what has recent posts anymore so I have to scroll to find them.

I don't know about Arkansas, but where I live we had to take the kids to an eye doctor and have them complete a form to turn into the school before kindergarten. Also a physical with immunization records and a exam by a dentist.

S02.E12: The Trail of the Missing Witness
Jenniferbug replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in Nancy Drew (2019)
I think it was a selfie using a camera. I don't think her other arm was in the picture so she was probably holding the camera out to take the picture. I was alive back in the stone age of the 90s and that's how we did it then- much harder and less guaranteed than today's phone versions LOL -
S02.E12: The Trail of the Missing Witness

Grant had the picture of his mom and dad together, but had been told his dad bailed on them. -
Wow! That is an intense hail storm! Seems like so many building materials are in a shortage. There are a lot of people still waiting to replace fencing and decks and things like that that were damaged but not essential.
-
I'm finally getting a fence built again! The backyard privacy fence our house had when we moved in was destroyed in the derecho storm last August. The contractor intended to fix it in the fall when he did the other repair work, but said between the derecho, hurricanes, and wildfires across the country that lumber was really hard to get and if he could, it would probably cost us about $3K more than he had originally quoted us. So we decided to wait and spent all winter taking the dog out on a leash. The contractor reached out a couple weeks ago to check in about the fence and did another quote for us. Still about $1K over what he had originally quoted because lumber prices are still a little high but much better than it would have been in fall. They cleared away the old fence and dropped off materials for the new fence and are going to build on Monday!

It made me wonder what explanation Odette gave them! I bet that would have been entertaining! 😆 -

Yeah I thought it was a good way to give Grant a sympathetic viewpoint and show how enmeshed our main group is. Poor Grant. I'm sad he had to leave so soon, but hope he'll be back for a few episodes later. He'd make a great recurring character. Loved that Thom accepted him right away. And I thought it was interesting that they made sure to mention that he goes by his middle name. The show is doing everything it can to point to them as the Hardy Boys. What is the rights situation with the characters? I know Hulu had a show with them, but does that exclude them from being used elsewhere? Also really liked seeing Jesse and George interact more. I'm not sure what to think about Odette. I thought it was interesting that her sisters had met her and weren't really bothered by it, but I really don't like the romance with Bess. Unless they can find a way to make Odette a character that isn't inside George, that gets into some icky consent issues and I'd rather the show not go there. The Hudson family is awful. Poor Ryan being set up from such a young age to take the fall. I don't like Nancy making deals with Celia but appreciated that she felt she had no other way to get Ace back safely. -
Season 5 Live Discussion Thread

I need them to tone Jenny down and make her shut up once in a while. She's really starting to kill the show for me. -
@xtwheeler that was really helpful! Thank you! I'll have to look into trusts and see if that's the best path for us. And thank you for reminding me about needing power of attorney for medical decisions too! That's another area where I've told all family to pull the plug, but having it legally binding is better. @Scarlett45, not bossy- I asked for it! LOL I believe our state generally seeks out family and as both our sets of parents are elderly and my sister and her husband are well off and already experienced in parenting, I think they'd be the no brainer for the state. But we absolutely still need to have it legalized!

At what age is it recommended you meet with a financial planner and start really planning for retirement? Also I know we have some lawyers on the board- are wills fairly easy to set up? What information do we need to start one? We meant to meet with an attorney to get one set up last summer but then the pandemic happened. My husband and I are both under 40, but should probably start planning for the future more than we have. I have a 401k at work that I've been putting a bit of money into each paycheck and he's a teacher so will have IPERS. We did get life insurance set up last year before the pandemic. We don't have a formal will, but everyone in our family is aware of who will get our children if something happens to both of us, and my sister knows she is the beneficiary on all our life insurance policies should something happen to both of us (I told her since she gets my kids, she can either use the money to raise them or she can put it in bank accounts for them). We don't really have other assets, and I assume our families would take what they want and sell or donate the rest. But seems like we should probably have it formalized anyway!

Ok so I was watching this while working this morning so I may have missed things. Did they ever explain why Caroline had to pull the debris up from the marsh? She and Luke both had mind control powers because of it, right? But he couldn't access it himself. And I'm unclear where her dad fit in too- he shot himself because that lady willed him to, but did she have a piece of the mind control debris on her? I appreciate that the sister was smart enough to use a code phrase on the phone. Hopefully Finola will clue in that her boss is also shady- if not shadier- than Maddox. Also when are we getting more Sebastian Roche?
