S01.E01: Pilot / S01.E02: Joust Friends 2015.01.04

Just how long did that joust training last? Or am I demanding too much realism from my television musical comedies? -
He was a TOTAL asshat in The Way, Way Back. I wanted to slap him silly.

Actually, I don't mind the lyric change...I think it's a bit better.

Wow, I've found my GWTW peeps! While the book was superior in many ways to the movie, one of my favorite changes was the editing out of the characters Will (who ended up marrying Suellen after Scarlett snared Frank) and Archie (the grizzled oldtimer that showed up when Scarlett and Melanie moved back to Atlanta). The net result of this was that Hattie McDaniel's Mammy inherited some of their best lines ("He's her husband, ain't he?" and "Don't you doubt Miss Melly's word!"). I feel it rounded out her character and gave the film's Mammy more depth than the book's Mammy had. I think these additional scenes contributed in no small way to McDaniel's Oscar win (in addition, of course, to her wonderful scene describing Rhett's breakdown to Melanie as they both climbed up the stairs.) Just my two cents. :)

"The Colbert Report": The Final Week
A Boston Gal replied to trow125's topic in The Colbert Report [V]
Knowing that you all obsessively watched the sing-along a zillion times, just like me, did anyone else notice the strong female singing voice as the song entered the last couple of refrains? Whoever it was, she was perfectly on pitch, so I'm assuming it was a professional singer. But the only professional female singer I saw there was Cyndi Lauper, and it didn't sound like her voice at all. Does anyone want to venture a guess? Has Samantha Power been holding out on us? -

The wrap party must have been amazing. -

You guys have hit the nail on the head; he's spending this last week not only giving us his usual quality work, but unraveling the character of "Stephen Colbert". Thursday's show should be an epic example of comedic writing and artistry. -

S40.E09: Martin Freeman / Charli XCX
A Boston Gal replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Saturday Night Live
Yeah, I agree Che was much better. But, I don't think his Daily Show experience lasted long enough affect him one way or the other. Whatever; I hope this represents an upward tick in his learning curve. -
S06.E12: Mensch on a Bench, Eve Drop, Q Flex, Hoppy Paws
A Boston Gal replied to yeswedo's topic in Shark Tank
Mensch on a Bench! Mensch on a Bench! Mensch on a Bench! Sorry...I just love this product, and have been a fan of the creator's for a while now (he's been promoting tonight's episode on The Mensch's Facebook page for two weeks). Fingers crossed he gets a good deal tonight, and that the company's website doesn't implode from the traffic! -
S04.E09: Tupperware Party Massacre
A Boston Gal replied to Tara Ariano's topic in American Horror Story
I've been racking my brain trying to remember who Wittrock's characterization of "Dandy" reminded me of...then I remembered Tom Hulce in "Amadeus": a spoiled, entitled, flamboyant, egotistic, tantrum-prone, immature character who thinks the sun rises and sets with his talents. The difference being, in "Amadeus"s case, the talent part was true. ;) -

Ok, so with that screed, June now isn't even "pretending" to be back with Sugarbear anymore, right? Is she back with the child rapist (whom she never really left)? Or am I trying too hard to understand the utter nonsense this whole sorry situation has devolved into? ETA: Thanks for wading through all the muck to keep us up to date, Giant Misfit. You're a more selfless person than I am! -
I believe the setting is the thing that's moving; not the Season One characters with it, if I'm reading this right.
-
<pointless, spoiled rant> Damnit, I am REALLY regreting not having seen the previous seasons of this show. Sigh. </pointless, spoiled rant>

Very interesting news, editorgrrl! A "creative reboot" (as opposed to a storyline reboot, I'm guessing?) might finally address the plot and story universe problems we talked about all last season. However, I will try to keep my hopes in check. ;)

Well, that article certainly proved what you all had theorized about the so-called "trust funds"...not real trusts at all, but instead, ordinary bank accounts June can access at will. -

Could there be a learning disability involved? -
I gotta say, I found this rather formulaic. I agree with ancslove that Eddie Redmayne was terrific, but as a whole, the film just felt like a conventional bio-pic, and if ever a subject cried out for an original take on an well-used format, it's Hawking. And what was with the horrible make up? No one could figure out how to age Felicity Jones believably, so they just stuck her in progressively dowdier hair and wardrobe. The make up people were completely incapable of convincing me this actress had aged 25 years over the course of the film. On an interesting note: Emily "Breaking the Waves" Watson is now playing grandmothers. Wish I was smart enough to make a pithy remark about the nature of time.

A series that can boast of its pilot as one of its most loved episodes is a rare bird indeed.

I remember first noticing Jessica Lange in Tootsie, and thinking she was the worst actress ever. It wasn't until I saw her in other things (King Kong nonwithstanding) that I realized she was fantastic; it was her "Julie" character that was so damn annoying. Feh.

Oh, man, I feel like I have to put on large sunglasses and a trenchcoat just to slip into this forum and read what's going on. June's so slimey she makes ME feel bad for even hearing about her lies. :::readjusts her large dark sunglasses and tries to slip away into the crowd::::
