I think 'cockroach' isn't actually a perjorative, I think it is a 'cockroaches surviving a nuclear blast' kind of thing. It also is an interesting ethical question. A lot of them, however much they like paperclips, also really miss biting and nibbling and twisting and so on. They know the humans don't like this behavior, even if it is an enjoyable paid job for the demons. At what point does it become hate, or something close enough? If you are human, does it matter? Jason isn't developmentally disabled, though. He is like a holy innocent, or something like one. I don't know if it will come into play but I don't think he's just a stupid criminal with a pretty face, I think he's something else.

Jason may be a Ginger and Janet may be a Maryann. I like the idea of Maryann having near infinite power. They need an analog for coconuts, though. Coconuts that can be alcoholic beverages, radios, mri machines, flying drones, etc. What is the basic material of the universe? In Gilligan's island, definitely the coconut. I didn't like Tahani's story, but it did establish that the sister was a jerk and that, even so, Tahani caused her own death with her jealous anger and resentment. Is there a god in this show and is there a reward? We haven't heard a particle of evidence that faith gets you anywhere. Anyway, I prefer James. If knowing that god exists wouldn't change your behavior, it isn't important.

PODCAST S01.E17 Go Pirates!: Paternal Discretion Is Advised
Affogato replied to Primetimer's topic in Veronica Mars
If Veronica had taken the money from Logan perhaps they would never have gotten together. I think her tearing up the check was hugely meaningful for him. I'd forgotten Lilly running by her to get her out to the pool area. -
Love "Team Cockroach".

I thought everyone showed promise in this episode. Chidi made a decision to join with Michael and argued the case decisively. Eleanor's first impulse was to take care of herself (the cocaine would be to buy a place for herself in the medium place) but she paused and reconsidered. Jason realized his ideas weren't helping and went off to play with his sparkler. Michael asked for help. Tahani was able to take the first step in understanding why she was in the bad place. At this point they have an interesting crew. Michael is an architect, Janet is a ... well .... Janet, Tahani is a fundraiser, Jason is a the one they can test their ideas on,Eleanor is rapidly becoming the leader of the group. They can make their own good place, for all of that. They are a moral startup. Janet being the most advanced Janet is interesting.

Vicki reminds me enough of Tahani so I wonder if their isn't going to be something going on there, perhaps she can be a vehicle of Tahani's self awareness and redemption. Jason wouldn't have survived as long as he did if he wasn't adorable.

Lisa Rinna is Logan's mother. -
PODCAST S01.E12 Go Pirates!: Skull And Boneheads

That was apparently what thomas was going for, that she might not be actually dead. It would have provided a good arc for Logan in the fourth or fifth season, if he was not with Veronica ( which I think was the intention). -
Good Speculation: Non-Spoilered Thoughts About What's Really Going On

I think it is borderline possible Michael is an angel who is being rehabilitated. -

Billy is one beautiful goat. Someone has to say it. I really wish she'd gone out with Leo longer. At the least he's a reminder that there is life outside of high school, life that isn't Liane. -
PODCAST S01.E16: Go Pirates! Betty and Veronica
Affogato replied to Primetimer's topic in Veronica Mars
Good post, although I think we were given the reason why Keith doubted them immediately when we see Lilly's death. They were washing Duncan's blood soaked clothes and the Kanes were lying to cover for Duncan, who the Kanes believed Killed Lilly. Keith picks up that they are covering something up and jumps to the conclusion (as Veronica so often does) that Jake was the killer. -
PODCAST S01.E16: Go Pirates! Betty and Veronica

I never had a living mascot except for cheerleaders in furry costumes, but the parrot is pretty easily explained since parrots often outlive their owners. Someone who works in the office brings their dead great aunt's bird in, it goes with the pirate theme and people make it a general pet. Maybe Pan got a goat in retaliation. The sexual and rural implications of the great god Pan as a high school name, did that mean anything? That is also a lot of meat to have been taken off a goat of Billy's size. I don't think Veronica was on the pep squad for long. There is this flashback where Lilly tells Veronica she is joining the pep squad and V is dubious, but as of the car wash it is clear Veronica has joined the pep squad, too, which would mean she was only a member for a short period of time up until Lilly's murder and not long afterwards. Once Keith lost his job she was busy receptionisting after school and by that time Logan would have soured the experience for her if she'd wanted to stay on the squad. She may not have been on the pep squad when basketball season was underway. I liked a lot of this episode. It is pretty clear that Veronica could have transferred to Pan and had a much different high school experience, while still working for her Dad, solving Lilly's murder and maybe even taking on high school cases. Of course the logical time for her to transfer would have been after Shelly Pomeroy's party so she would still have been raped and Logan would have gone after her when his mother died, or Mars Investigations, so she would have still ended with a lot of problems. She might have had more friends, though, and her returning to Neptune later in life might have been less Noir and frankly less tragic. It is classist, though. Pan is clearly where a policeman's daughter should have gone to school, even the Sheriff. I'm surprised Keith wouldn't follow up on where her money went. He really is raising her as if she was a forty year old! Then he would have found the rehab place. I noticed that when she called for him he is getting tired of just being used as a source of information for her cases, like Wallace. I'm not sure if this is related to trust, as is often assumed, I think. I wonder if she is reconstructing her sense of self worth so she is not of value as a person but only valuable for her usefulness. Not sure I've got that right, though. When Wallace goes off to eat with the rest of the team and leaves her there the camera shot makes her seem as if she is receding into the distance. Later she eats with them, but only to get information, and she probably doesn't join them again when her case is solved. Maybe once, for cake. The snickerdoodle boxes were sweet and her transferring lockers to be near Wallace and not (presumably Lilly's old locker) is also cute. It is too bad the thing with the plant really messes things up between them. She obviously has difficulty with the relationship with Meg soon enough and generally this is the last ghosts of her having friends. It creates the void that Logan moves into and while he tries to bring her back to the 09ers that wasn't, as we've learned, even a go when Lilly was alive--and most of them weren't his friends, really. Liane. Jake. I think Thomas still wanted to actually make Veronica Jake's daughter at some point, at least it is open ended. Whether Jake and Liane were having a sexual relationship at this point is also, I think, not clear. Jake doesn't seem like someone who would give up a lot for a drunk, even his high school sweetheart, although he might see her in a neutral location, like a hotel. I think at first it seems like she drank when Keith's lifestyle took a dive but later it is said that she had been drinking for a long time. -
I admit the fountain of clam chowder, which is probably full of bugs and salmonella, is pretty disgusting. It probably isn't as bad as being dismembered daily, but the smell alone must be appalling. I don't see Ted making sure the pipes are clean, either. I think the idea is that, instead of finding each other and working together, they will each make their own hell--Chidi through indecision, Tahani through jealousy (and the eventual inability to find anything to do for others to bolster her feelings of self worth), and so on.

Remember on Angel (if you watched it, I mean) Honestly I think Michael might have wanted the nicer working environment, which is allowed when he is playing the long con. The majority of demons, apparently, have trouble delaying gratification and most of them seem to be pretty focused on their professional specialties. However, I think the idea is that one thing would lead to another. Eleanor would be so unpleasant no one would talk to her, perhaps, and she would spend eternity alone. Jason would be alone and unable to talk to anyone. Chidi....I suspect the punishment was to be loneliness, punctuated with the occasional mean giraffe. What happens when you don't have connection and personal improvement.

Last season we see Chidi flashbacks where he compliments this professor?advisor?friend?'s boots, is given a pair, really hates them and when the person is on his deathbed, bonding with Chidi, Chidi breaks down in a fit of honesty and tells the person he hates his boots (and so on). This is bad, in my opinion. . Chidi was not only a bad person to someone he didn't have to befriend, he was a nasty one. That he did it entirely to make himself feel better makes it worse. (I find the exact specifics of this scene escape me, sorry, but I think I remember the set up and it showed why Chidi would be in the bad place). I still think the score card is selfishness, caring about your own issues (whether airing out your feet on a plane or being absolutely honest) and not caring at all about the feelings of others. I think Chidi qualifies as much as Eleanor.

Thinking of how Logan collapses on her in this episode. She looked uncomfortable, awkwardly pats him and then hugs. Her first look is all 'dude....dude' lets say you have a five year old and another five year old steals his stuffed toad. I'm thinking nurturing is comforting the child and then finding another toad for the kid. Veronica would find the other child's parents, get the toad back and maybe get the parents car towed. Maybe without the kid knowing. Maybe it isn't even her kid. Or you know breaking into the evidence garage so your kid doesn't have to. Not going home with Logan after he finds out his mother is truly dead but making sure he gets home when he arrives at the dance drunk and without pants. Maybe not making sense.

I wonder if the wedding scrapbook was something from before Lilly died. Or something liane made her do . V seemed too busy to spend time cutting and pasting that day So Trina had already stolen the credit card before she left for Australia as insurance? That confused me, too. absolutely a caretaker but not nurturing. Like her dad .

The structure of Veronica mars is that of the heroes journey. The call to adventure is followed by the refusal of the call and receiving supernatural help, Lilly's ghost :-), and so on. She goes through several cycles of this and I believe her mom, then Duncan, then Logan are the refusal for each season/ cycle. When she moves on they become a little diorama of what could have been. The atonement of the father goes without saying! it wouldn't have taken much to clarify the Liane storyline. IMO. A couple of flashbacks. Another missed phone message. Etc.

Seconds on coffee and pie ( Twin Peaks rewatch)
Affogato replied to Affogato's topic in Twin Peaks [V]
I rewatched the pilot of my new 'missing pieces' blue ray set, so I'll finally get to see those. I'm behind. Doc Hayward was the bestest dad ever. I guess that makes sense. Loved the Norwegians. 'ding ding the Norwegians are leaving'. The scene in the jail cells, which are darker and scummier 25 years later (and maybe that makes sense), especially the barking, is so much more meaningful in hindsight. Wait, no it isn't. But it is much more something. Can't get away from whatever it is, some sort of connection. Poor James, too., that can make your life go south quickly. I wonder what James thought he was going to be originally? Here is an idea? If Laura hadn't been killed what would have happened to these people? Would Bobby have found himself to be a good person? What the hell happened to Donna, anyway? -
Actually I think that Veronica was the family enabler, she cleaned up after alcoholic mom so the family worked and kept it from Keith. I think Keith kept it from Veronica and also enabled it. Not an unusual alcoholic pattern. I don't think she was idealized, but Veronica and Keith worked to maintain the appearance of an ideal family. Oddly it is one of the things, that underlying alcoholic mother thing, that Veronica and Logan do understand about each other, although they both had different (more or less textbook) reactions to the situation.
-
I said that Veronica's relationship with her mother could have used more development, or at least what is going on. I was just saying the Logan drama possibly moved into both of their spaces a little, and that this may have had some detrimental effects on the show. One of the things they have talked about in the podcast is that the Veronica's mother storyline was sort of vague and not developed and not really sympathetic because you never really saw why Veronica would want her back, among other things. I'm saying that this could have used some screen time.

Dishing With Diane: Twin Peaks Media Thread
Affogato replied to PeteMartell's topic in Twin Peaks [V]
Yes it is convincing as an elaborate prank ( or is it? ) situation. It occurs to me, too, that the design would make disturbing bathroom decor. I would do it. Hi, happy Halloween. The bathroom is down the hall. The teapot and I will be in the living room.
