The $100,000 Pyramid - General Discussion
jhlipton replied to Meredith Quill's topic in The $100,000 Pyramid
I don't think that should matter. And there's no real way to know for sure that the answer to the previous question wasn't jarred free by the current one. -
This cast runs from the boring to the repulsive. I'm out this season.

Thanks for the info -- that's put it back on my radar. As to what I watched, it looked like tWoT -- one scene was a woman preparing to leave a castle with a guy who looked like Marcus Rutherford, with both on horseback. *** But I realize now that what I saw was on network TV, and tWOT will be on Amazon, sometime in 2020. Now I wonder what the heck I saw!!!!

re Yasha Jackson: casting a Black Woman in an SF/fantasy show? Don't they know that it's Just Not Done?? Now I have to watch...

To Tell The Truth - General Discussion

I think American Idol was the first to do this, and I agree, it stinks. It's not as bad if it's an audio talent, like singing, but for anything visual, they should do the picture-in-picture method suggested by @iMonrey. -

The $100,000 Pyramid - General Discussion
jhlipton replied to Meredith Quill's topic in The $100,000 Pyramid
I think it should depend on where in the pyramid they are. The first couple should be judged pretty loosely, then more and more strictly as they move up. "Things in a kitchen" works better as a "first subject" than "kitchen appliances" does. -

Mayim got 49 out of 60, and got the last one, so she missed 2 (top score is 60). She missed "Row across the Atlantic" and the MMA fighter, both of which I got. It's particularly bad in that all the Black women seem to do this, which perpetuates a vile stereotype. -
The $100,000 Pyramid - General Discussion

I thought the celeb needing to say "appliance" specifically (as oppose to "things in the kitchen", which she did say, and which the contestant thought would match) was totally inappropriate for the first question, which is usually a "gimme". "Appliance" is a relatively unused word in everyday talk, and belongs at the upper levels of the game. Also, "alphabet" is nearly as bad for the second spot, if she couldn't use "a, b, c,", etc. I do wonder if she could have said "alpha, beta, gamma" or "Alpha Bravo Charlie.." (for non-English alphabets). -
When damn doctor tells you that "heart rate" and "blood pressure" are the same, you listen, judges. Since all the celebs had one or the other, she would have won if they had judged it right. I hope she sues them. If there was a good reason that it was judged "not a match", they should have explained why not. I had "Horsey Sauce", since that's a thing only Arby's has. My wife had "jus". Several of the contestants made it clear that they were using "pryamids" as a euphemism for "boobs" -- one had "boobs" in parenthesis, and another drew a pair of pryamids that looked pretty "boob"ish. I don't think you missed that much. The references were fun, but didn't affect the plots or the characters much, if at all. Just for example, Sherlock refereed to himself as Sigerson and as Lestrade. The first was one of his aliases in one of the stories and the latter was an Inspector who worked with Holmes on 13 cases. This is fairly typical of the way the references were used.

Two Sentence Horror Stories - General Discussion

Trust me... you REALLY don't. -
I would too. But that wasn't how it was cast, from major roles like CG and Alistair to the police chief and his lead detective. That's why Black female Metal Wu stood out, and why I was upset that she (like most Black women on SF and fantasy shows) got such a small part.

That kind of moral ambiguity needs to be established sooner rather than later, otherwise it becomes a "twist" for the twist's sake. "You thought they were in The Good Place (you believed our title, you fool!!! Ha ha, they're in The Bad Place!" "You thought there were reasonable rules as to who went were? Ha ha, you fool! There are none!!!!" Blech. The quality of writing on The Office dropped like a boulder once Steve Carell left. In particular, the character of Andy was completely changed, and the Shrute family were made recurring characters, instead of the very occasional visitors they should have been. If you ever do decide to watch, stop before the last season.
-
I did indeed stop watching The Good Place after Season 1 (I think I watched a few episodes after). I didn't hate it, like I did P&R (Amy Poehler will never be funny) and the "horrible boss/co-worker" was done much better by Dabney Coleman in Bufflao Bob (look at the cast list -- impressive, no?) and 9 To 5.

Two Sentence Horror Stories - General Discussion
jhlipton replied to AnimeMania's topic in Two Sentence Horror Stories
One apparently can order tapeworms off the internet but them being in diet pills is apparently an urban legend. My impression was that the "short stories" were a framing device, or jumping off point, for the televised story, and so didn't bother me. -
Readers of this forum might be interested in the New York Times "1619 Project" (based on the year that the first slave ship arrived in America), which is a series of articles, poems, videos, etc, about the lasting impact of slavery. Of course, the Usual Suspects call it a "lie" and "brainwashing". But they're not racists, no sirree!!!

Look here: https://forums.primetimer.com/search/?q=Karrueche Tran&type=forums_topic&nodes=3168 About half the comments are about how bad Tran is and how she was only cast due to her "notoriety".

Jake could easily have written as the typical "man-boy" who never grows up or takes responsibility for anything. But even before his relationship with Amy started, we could see that he took his job very seriously (for all his jokes). Amy could easily have been written as the upright shrill "by the rules" woman. But they went against stereotype and wrote these two as people who REALLY "got" their partner (their gifts to each other are always so perfect). I'm 50/50 on Mike Shur. I loved The Office and love B99, but couldn't stand P&R, and the ethics of The Good Place (Tahani is in The Bad Place for.. being bullied? Doing good things for a "bad" reason? I don't know -- the episode that showed her life put me off a show I was al;ready teetering on.) One of the major problem this Sherlock has is that, to a certain extent, he still loves Adler, even as he detests Moriarty. I think this Sherlock and a male Watson would have been very much like every other version we've seen (save for cries for them to be romantically or sexually involved, since now two attractive men can't be in a show without one or both being gay). I'm very glad they gender-bent (and race-bent) Watson. Inconceivable!!!

"Nelly the Ellybot" is indeed an elephant.

I liked the format of the first season better, with the results of the confection round announced before they start the cake round. It looks like the clock keeps running while the judges talk to the bakers. This is extremely unfair to bakers who hit their buzzer while the judges are at another table -- they have to wait until the judges are done before they can even start. (Some confirmation -- it looked like one couple hit their buzzer with 25 minutes to go, but they were only given 11 minutes after the judges were through.)
-
Watched all the way to the conclusion. One extremely sour note: If they had a Black woman on the show, why was she on for less than 5 minutes. It looked like a gratuitous nod to "inclusion". Overall, pretty good. Good cast and a nice story-line. I wanted Xan to die even before she killed Uncle Daddy Six (sorry, wrong show), but I guess I have to wait. Speaking of Uncle Six, I thought he was played with a nice amount of subtlety, as a man who would do good if not for his environment and upbringing.

A lot of the teams comment on the Battalebots reddit. Team Mammoth said why they (reluctantly) agreed with the judges decision, and gave them the "tusk" that Wan Hoo cut off.

Any new telling of the ACD stories is going to differ from the canon in one way or another. I liked that Watson was an Asian woman -- that intrigued me from the get-go. The main characterizations -- Holmes as a socially inept genius (but not an a**hole like the one in Sherlock, or Dr Gregory House) coping with addiction and Watson as his sober companion seemed right on for me.

In addition to the brush strokes, I find Ross' voice just soooooooo soothing!
