  1. Up until WW2, private citizens could walk up to the front door and ask to see the President! Today, traffic isn't allowed to pass in front of it, and the fences just keep getting higher!
  2. That would have been awesome! Although I don't think William Demarest would have worked out as Ben Grimm/The Thing. I think he would have been too old for the role, plus I doubt he would have been patient about the costume/make up application. I keep imagining a 60s version of what happened to Buddy Ebsen in his Tin Man makeup. The other actors (not to mention the "writers" of the imaginary episodes) definitely would have been spot on!
  3. The only thing keeping me where I am is lack of job offers elsewhere. I polished my resume and tried to look for greener pastures but no luck. Apparently I'm lucky to be employed at all. My cousin - who is a highly skilled techie (designed all sorts of computer applications from credit card companies to the US Navy ) could barely find work and she's still on the hunt for something better. Can't find much - importing people from China and India is cheaper.
  4. So sorry bilgistic! Your boss is a real jackass!! May I suggest this? I'm really fed up. I found out that the promotion I was up for will not happen - corporate decided to eliminate the position! I can't begin to tell you how pissed off I am about this!! I put in 15 years learning the ins and outs of the job - only to have it literally go poof! I'm also upset over something I found out from a co-worker. It seems he applied for a transfer to a different department (for which he was qualified for) but our boss told the department head he wasn't letting him go. He was doing good work for him and he doesn't want to lose his talent!! My temper went through the roof because that means we're all prisoners because we're good at our jobs and can only find progress if we go elsewhere!!!
  5. To this day I think the HB version from 1967 was the best animated incarnation. Yes, it's a bit simplistic by today's writing standards, but it's far closer to the FF from the comics in terms of tone and personality.
  6. I think she may have ended up with a guy who may have been married or otherwise involved with someone else and he's juggling dates. I do agree it was wrong for him to make plans for the second date only to break them and not call again. Good that she blocked him and moved on. I hate it when you have such a good time with someone at last and think it might go somewhere only for them to never call again and leave you wondering why. We deserve an explanation.
  7. There always seems to be a "song for message" theme isn't there? More recently I can think of: "Black Horse & The Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstall - used for people (usually women) who realize they're with the wrong lover. "500 Miles" by The Proclaimers - used by someone who has a long trip to make to prove something. "Bad To The Bone" by George Thorogood - used to indicate a badass or ultimate jerk in a film. "O Fortuna" by Carl Orff - used in previews mostly - to indicate the film is EPIC!
  8. If my parents were doing the arranging, I'd have trusted them implicitly. I have no doubt that they would have found a good man for me who had the right temperament/characteristics to compliment mine. As I posted earlier, too many people today have a romantic image of "love" and not what true love is in a marriage. I could marry someone I liked and respected and if I knew he liked and respected me. Both of those are part of true, lasting love. Love grows over time, not at first sight or because your heart skips a beat. Nope. Plenty of that going on here too. In fact, most don't bother with marriage - they just skip to shack up, spawn with a few girlfriends, get tattooed with their latest baby mama's name (that's commitment you see!) and/or a tattoo of a photo of their kid(s). No one knows much about courtship anymore - all they know is the hook up culture. Since many of them come from parents who also were divorced or never married, they have no good examples to follow. My parents were married for 46 years (till mom's death 4 years ago) and it's their relationship that set a good example of what kind of marriage I aspire to have.
  9. Not to mention everybody's dance interpretation of it! There's a Youtube vid of everyone from 80 something grandmas to these girls.
  10. I hate the cousin to this trope - the one in which Christians/Catholics are evil serial killers. Or deviants. Last I checked, devout Christians are not causing all the crimes in NYC. It's on of the reasons I can't watch L&O reruns from 2000 or so, some of the storylines were just ridiculous (like the one about a Christian summer camp in which kids are inspired to throw rocks at sinners - leading one of them to stone his mother to death for adultery!) . L&O certainly isn't the only show in the past 20 years to use this (they pretty much exhausted it! ) but they really should have tried other avenues.
  11. Actually, men were also primed for marriage - as well as a career/trade. Back in the day, when a man wanted to have sex with the girl of his dreams, he typically had to marry her. Women drew the line as to how far they were willing to go until they got the ring. Men were willing to pay the price of commitment. They settled down with that one woman. Then, women were told they could do as they pleased and shouldn't have to wait for marriage. Men took advantage, and today have turned into overgrown frat rats who don't have to commit to anyone for sex and companionship. They just "hook up" and the booty comes calling! Not to mention how marriage today is a dicey proposition for men now. They have no reason to marry - they get all of the perks without that pesky commitment. It breaks my heart that my niece thinks the way she does at such a young age. When I was her age, I still had more than enough hope that Mr. Right would walk into my life someday and things would work themselves out. Now I'm getting older and I can't help but think that if Mr. Right hasn't come by now, he never will. Yet, a little piece of me keeps thinking it could still happen. It just drives me nuts when I run into so many people who seem to have magically met their special someone with barely any effort - or were with their HS or college sweetheart and made it work. Actually , Patti Novak happened to have relocated here a while back (the Buffalo matchmaker who also had a show)! Truthfully, I was thinking of "upscale singles introduction services" like Kelleher.
  12. Maybe your sister should try an introduction service - a matchmaker. It's more expensive than online dating but maybe she'd have better luck. Actually, from what I've heard, many of them don't charge the woman much if anything . Meeting available and decent men is really hard here - so hard in fact my teenaged niece is already spouting the best guys are already taken. I've tried work, singles parties, church (no gays that I can recall, but lots of old men (80+) and a few hopeful widows) and the internet. Unfortunately, I'm getting ready to call it a day. Someone is trying to tell me something.
  13. Just in case you didn't like the ending...... Make sure you watch all the way to the very end!
  14. Imagine my surprise when I learned how many versions of "Hush" were recorded! Deep Purple's version is the best known and was the biggest hit. Turns out Billy Joe Royal did a version before they did. Joe South, who originally wrote the tune recorded his own version. Kula Shaker did a spirited cover. Not to be forgotten, is this version by Johnny Hallyday - in French! From what I've read, he was really big in the French music circles. Deep Purple's version is produced a bit more smoothly compared to Royal's version, but it's not bad. I prefer Joe South's vocals however.
  15. ITA. It's not as if Christy Marx wasn't willing to contribute towards a live action Jem movie. Methinks some Hollywood politics was afoot. It'll bite them in the butt when the movie gets released to empty theatres. I've written my opinion on the comments section on YT where the trailer has been playing. It's a travesty!
  16. There are a lot of reasons, but in my family, it was more than a matter "entertaining", Since not all hospital rooms are as clean as they could be, it wasn't uncommon for relatives to clean the room themselves from top to bottom - bleach and all. Right down to the bed frame (lots of germs hiding there from the last patient) and remote. They also took shifts to make sure the patient would get proper treatment - especially on weekends when the staff is much lighter. My mom, whenever she was hospitalized couldn't even get a sponge bath on weekends, so my dad, sister, niece and myself all took turns making sure she was clean. When my niece was little, she used to cuddle up with my mom in bed to watch TV. Plus, it's good to have people you know and love with you - making sure no one takes advantage of you when you're in a vulnerable position.
  17. I think it's because cats are harder to train than dogs and are more likely to do their own thing on a set. Most times cats are seen on camera they're in someone's arms or in a carrier.
  18. Same with funerals. On Charmed, Prue's funeral could have been attended by some familiar faces. There were plenty of innocents they helped or saved in the first three seasons but we got a sea of unknown extras - while Piper, Phoebe, their father and their significant others sat in the front row.
  19. Ditto. I've never forgiven him for what he did in "The Green Hornet"!!
  20. I like the idea for the thread - but maybe we could change the thread title to: On The Job: Co-workers or Co-irkers?
  21. More often than not, they end up a losing proposition. Toronto raised money to build its stadium and Olympic village via bonds and taxes. That was 1976. They only recently caught up with the cost! Some cities hope for a tourism boost the Olympics normally would bring but for a host of reasons, many stadiums end up being half empty. The only reason I can think of trying to bring it to one's city is because someone's brother in law stands to profit from building the Olympic Village or is a vendor selling food or souvenirs. You and your husband are great! I'm sorry you had such an ungrateful wretch before you. Call me cynical, but I can't help but wonder if she didn't do that on purpose. Lots of people have been known to pick up the difference on a grocery balance out of kindness and maybe she thought you'd oblige. I remember having to deal with a welfare case in a grocery line once who bought about $50.00 worth of groceries and handed her EBT card to the cashier. It was a zero balance so the woman just up and left the groceries behind without a second thought. No whining or pleading, just up and left because she knew the card would be replenished soon enough. Not for nothing but she didn't look like she was missing any meals either.
  22. That pet peeve of rudeness combined with cluelessness rears its ugly head again: I was preparing to go shopping at Sam's Club yesterday morning. I get a cart from the lot and walk towards the entrance. A woman is on a cell phone blocking my path. I politely ask her to move aside. As I'm moving through I hear her say, "What do you expect me to do? Walk in front of traffic?". I kept moving but two possible answers came to my mind: "Yes, lady, please step out into traffic! It would be the best thing you could do for the species!" "No, Lady, I want you to pull your phone out of your ear and pay attention to your surroundings! Stop blocking people who are trying to get into the customer entrance when there are plenty of other places you could stand and make your call ! "
  23. The only reason that happened was because of his VA role in Aladdin. Disney owns ABC, so they had to put him somewhere. I agree that I wasn't crazy about his character or his being shoehorned in. Love the idea of casting Elizabeth Olsen as Michelle. Won't happen, but a nice thought.
  24. Speaking of the Killers, I love their cover of Cole Porter's Don't Fence Me In. It's not a song you expect to get covered by a rock band and come out sounding cool! It was also used for a Nevada tourism commercial.
  25. Been back to the iPod again - with covers of "Take A Giant Step" by The Rockin' Berries and "Pineapple Princess" by Na Leo. Take A Giant Step was originally recorded by The Monkees but this was the first time hearing a cover by someone else. It's actually quite good - it's produced very differently than the Monkees version but enjoyable. Carole King's version (actually, a demo) sounds very "country" to me but a bit closer to the Berries' version. Pineapple Princess was made popular by Annette Funicello but I didn't hear her version until after I head Na Leo's version during a trip to Hawaii. No contest, Na Leo's version is better of the two. Funicello's version seems way over produced.
