  1. Seriously. People blame Mo for that, yet it's always Danielle that brings it up.
  2. I don't find June likable at all. And that's okay, not all heroines have to be likable, but I don't find her interesting either.
  3. Right. If everyone's on board then, sure, why not? It's not really my place to judge their religious beliefs. (Everything else is fair game, though.) With Ick and Dannielle, however, she's clearly unhappy with the situation and no matter how many times she asks God for strength I'm not convinced she's hearing his call. Honestly, at this point I'm rooting for Bert and Dani to tell the Joel Osteen lookalike to fuck off and then ride off (on camels) into the sunset together.
  4. My husband is an anthropologist and has taught at our state's second largest university for 12 years. I don't know a single not-for-profit university that doesn't require their anthropologists to publish regularly. It's a huge deal and something that tends to set anthropology apart from other social sciences. He has to publish every 2 years, but some schools are stricter. My BA is in Anthropology and I taught it part time for 2 semesters at a community college. Even then the competition was very stiff and publishing was required. There are more anthropologists than there are university-level teaching positions. Experience, publishing, and research are not just good to have but also required for most jobs. I haven't Googled her at all, but if she were truly a university professor, even just as adjunct faculty, at any not-for-profit school then she'd be easily searchable. It's a very small field and hard to find work in, which is why many anthropologists have multiple jobs. My guess is that she "taught" online at a diploma mill.
  5. My seeesters! I recognize you guys! So I just started watching this, and holy hell. It's clear that Garrick, and only Garrick, is the one who heard the polygamist cry from God. Those people in the Bible did it and they were "holy"? Dude. People were beheaded and shit, too. You wanna give that a try as well? Danielle, take this opportunity and RUN. In the timeless words of Oda Mae Brown, you in danger, girl. The Snowdens just wanna be famous, right? What do they do when they're not courting a long line of women? Colton is NOT magically delicious. Glad the one chick realized that she was less wife and more indentured servant and left. Some of these people seem like they're just semantics away from human trafficking.
  6. I've been there. My high school boyfriend did this to me. It's 20 years later and I'm just now starting to really process the damage. But you go, girl! We're rooting for you.
  7. Yes, there's a difference between TESOL (what my husband taught), IEP, and ESL here. And whether you're taking classes through the adult education community services (free) or enrolled in the university as a student (paid). Richmond, about 45 minutes from them, also offers free ESL courses through their adult ed.
  8. A lot of times they're free. My mom teaches ESL and computer skills through the local university (community classes but they're through the uni's adult education program) and they're free. I usually pitch in and help if there are Muslim women enrolled. So far I have officially taught 47 Saudi Arabian women to speak and write English on an intermediate level. I have also unofficially used my own vehicle to teach them how to drive...
  9. Alrighty people...Pictures from my 1994 yearbook for your entertainment. Mid-90's small town mall fashion at its finest. That's me at the bottom I was NO Kate Wallis. I was barely a Jeanette pre-glow up.
  10. Hot damn! We gotta get to work on that trademark before TLC hears about it.
  11. Discovery+ has the full episode out. Holy mother of God. Mike's shifty AF, Brandon's smarmy AF, Aseulu's immature AF, Brother Libby's coked up AF, Angela's trashy AF, and Tiffany's got zero fucks left to give.
  12. On the positive side, healthcare in india is just a fraction of the cost it is here. Americans actually travel there to get shit done. Medical tourism is huge there. I broke my arm there and my medical transport, 2 night hospital stay, surgery, cast, medications, and follow up cost $350 total. It was actually cheaper to pay cash than to use my insurance. On the negative side, India is totally fucked right now. The chances of receiving ANY medical care, insurance or not, aren't good.
  13. Same here. All the streaming apps+internet is still less than what I was paying Comcast for cable alone. Plus, you can pause streaming apps. There are no contracts. I didn't mean for this to turn into a cable convo. My original point was just that there are more programs on Plus than 90 Day crap. I'm considering only watching Pillow Talk this season and not the episodes. That's what I've been doing with The Single Life. Watching Kalani and Aseulu is just depressing. She looks miserable and embarrassed. Producers probably put him up to a lot of shit, but their unhappiness looks real AF. Brandon's smug little smirk makes me pissy. His parents claim he's whipped, but they're only mad that they're no longer the ones holding it. I DGAF about Mike and Natalie.
  14. If this were a country that truly cared about children and procreation and even God then, yes, they'd probably accept this. But it's not. Their law about Commanders not sleeping with their lives is less about their wives being barren and more about control. They want the Commanders to have full allegiance to Gilead. Removing physical affection from a marriage, along with other things, helps keep a strong connection from forming. Serena and Fred broke a law. She'd most likely be allowed to give birth, at which point the baby would be given to a more deserving Commander's family. Then Serena, who's now proven to be fertile, would probably be made a Handmaid. God's will, messages from God, God's plan, etc has no real place in Gilead. They use religion as a facade.
  15. Yeah, I don't feel like we have a good grasp on what Gilead has on hand right now, especially considering there is still rebel held land in some places.
  16. Dead or close to it. Meanwhile, June bears no outwardly physical signs of punishment.
  17. Therein lies my biggest problem with some of this. There are times when I feel like the stuff that's going on is out of sync with the time period. My mom worked at our jail in the 90s and when she saw that scene it pissed her off. The whole thing about not questioning underage kids without a parent or attorney present has been around for a LONG time. I am also getting upset with how the media is allowing the negative comments about Jeanette to air. Protecting the rights of children is not a new thing. Hell, most people on TV wouldn't even call Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold out by name for the longest time. There's been no trial, Jeanette isn't charged with anything, and it's basically one traumatized person's word over another's. They'd really be opening themselves up for slander. I can't suspend disbelief for that. This is the first time I've ever watched a "period piece" that's set during a time period that I clearly remember. I feel like they're bending the timeframe to suit their narrative. It's still annoying, though.
  18. I actually enjoyed the "one burning question" (little extra on Hulu) with Luke and Rachel Lindsay more than I did the episode. It was interesting.
  19. Her visa is good for 180 days. She's been jumping over the border via train or bus and returning to reset it. I'm not sure how this will affect it, though, because I don't know when this new one started.
  20. Same. I enjoy snarking on them but neither one is a bad person. I'm sure Jenny is terrified. Being sick in a foreign country without the level of healthcare you're used to and comforts of home is rough. Then throw India on top of that. I feel bad for both of them.
  21. Lol, I'll take it. I live tweeted while I watched. It was fun. Between this and Cruel Summer I was up all night. (Some of you follow me. I blurred you out.)
  22. From your lips to the show writers' ears... Speaking of: Bruce Miller was liking and retreating a lot of what I wrote last night. I felt like a Kardashian. I hope that wasn't my 15.
  23. Yep, it's been specifically stated more than once. Econo people can have sex with each other, as can Guardians and their wives, but Commander's Wives are considered barren. Since sex is only for procreation in Gilead and wives supposedly aren't able to have kids then they're not allowed to have sex. There's an episode in S1 when Fred and Serena Joy almost have sex and he freaks. That's why they have places like Jezebel's. Commander's can only have sex once a month and that's during the "ritual." In between sessions they go fool around with the prostitutes. It's a very hypocritical society.
  24. I've had trouble with Nick from the beginning when he appeared genuinely bewildered as to why June was unhappy as a Handmaid.
  25. On it! 😊 My kids tried making a drinking game out of Angela's guffaws, but we were out of Coke 5 minutes into her segment so we had to cut back (or at least wait until we have a whole 12 pack). I'm no prude and I love a good dirty joke, but she sounds desperate and hers just aren't funny.
