  9. Graphic depictions were really common in newspapers back then. I had an ancestor who was killed by an icicle falling on his head. The newspaper is quite graphic in describing the damage to his head
  10. I wanted to address something you mentioned in the episode thread about how basic training changes you some what but not completely. My original job in the Marines was Intel. To make a long story short I ended up a cook, because as the MasterGunny said "that was a better job for a woman". I was stationed at 22 Area in Camp Pendleton near the airfield. I served in Gulf War 1. We were on call 24/7 because when people were going to deploy we had to go in a cook them a meal before they got on the plane. Some of those men came through the line with tears. They were afraid. They are human and it didn't matter how much training they had. Most of them are very young, 19, 20 years old. Sadly many of those Marines came back with strange illnesses Bottom line, Misha's behavior doesn't surprise me, especially if he lives with PTSD
  11. I can't be the only one who has seen the grocery store scene in Deutschland 83, can I? And I hate to admit to watching this, but I watch 90 day fiance and one of the wives was from Russia and she nearly cried because she was overwhelmed in the grocery store. She thought it was ridiculous how many variants of food we have. I want to see Philip's other son's reaction

  18. Was he a boat child, or was he a rescued child? He could have been one of the 10,000 plus kids from Operation BabyLift
  19. And where is the Mail Robot? I need to know he's OK
  20. I've studied this a lot in the last few years as my specialty is 20th Century European History. We were not really being altruistic and nice with the Marshall plan. The USA was deathly afraid that other devastated western countries were going to go communist. Most importantly, this included West Germany, our buffer. The USA saw what was happening in Austria, which while initially divided into 4 sectors like Germany, was under Soviet Control until 1955. In short some western countries with strong communist parties, looked like they might be desperate enough to go Communist. SO in comes the Marshall Plan saying,"Please don't go commie and we will help you, We promise". On the other side the USSR viewed this as a Capitalist plot to undermine them. The capitalist west was dangling carrots to get countries back in the fold and the Soviets didn't like it. The Marshall Plan was one of the primary reason the cold war heated up..
  21. I'm back in school getting a degree in History and Anthropology. University level history is less about who , where and when and more about why and how. It's much more interesting And I'm also related to Wiliam. I'd also be willing to bet that those of you who think you are only related to dirt farmers are wrong. I'm also pretty good at genealogy and have done some for others, purely because I love it. If anyone wants me to do some digging for free, message me.
  22. Or you know, walk to the bus stop that I'm sure was within a block or two. Buses are the main transport of people who actually live and work in London
  23. There was actually and embargo on selling grain to the soviets prior to Reagan. The embargo went on for much of Carter's presidency.
