  1. I'm with you on the 100% cotton sheet. I also dislike sateen or anything like it, so only percale sheets for me. I'm happy with the Martha Stewart ones I got at Macy's (only on sale, otherwise too expensive!)
  2. Thanks MissMel. It really did look like welding, at least until the flames started. I was yelling at my husband to shut off the circuit breaker. The new stove is in place. I'm going to christen the oven with Ina's cheddar jalapeno crackers!
  3. It's just me and the spouse, but I'm cooking anyway, just because I like it. I'm dry brining a bone-in turkey breast which I'll then roast. It will be accompanied by mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing (just basic, nothing fancy), and green bean casserole from the Smitten Kitchen website. Oh, and homemade rolls and pumpkin pie. It's very traditional this year, since last year Thanksgiving was with my vegetarian mother-in-law. This assumes that my new stove is delivered and set up successfully tomorrow. The old one went up in flames on Sunday - sparks and actual flames. I'm really irritated because I didn't have time to have a gas line extended to my kitchen so I could get a gas stove. So, my only criteria was a stove that could be delivered before Thanksgiving.
  4. I'm listening to a public radio show about Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Little House on the Prairie - the books, the TV show, and the new Pioneer Girl book. They have on actors from the show (Dean Butler and Karen Grassely, I think). Its interesting and fun. The show will be re-run tonight at 8:00, and available in the archives. 5. I just rediscovered Lloyd Cole as a solo artist & want to try something of his with the Commotions - any recommendations?
  6. Can someone remind me why Jax wants to take down Marks? With all of the convoluted crap happening, I seem to have forgotten. On a related note, why in the world would any of the other gangs trust SOA? Surely they aren't all stupid all the time.
  7. I am curious about how they will raise their kids, since they seem to have been raised differently from each other. Are they having conversations about blanket training, schooling, etc. (okay, schooling is a ways off). But those are conversations that most couples have with each other before they actually have kids. They had limited opportunities to have real conversations with each other - without a chaperone - before getting married, and now they have a baby on the way within weeks of getting married. If Derrick wants to raise their kids differently than Jill was raised, does he, as the husband, get to make the rules?
  8. This is what I say to myself when I have to badger my colleagues to answer my emails/get me the report/whatever else they owe me. It makes me feel slightly less stabby. "You sit on a throne of lies!" - from Elf. Also said in my head about my colleagues on a regular basis, often in conjunction with the above.
  9. I will watch any Queen Latifah movie that is on basic cable, whenever, wherever. And there is always a Queen Latifah movie on basic cable. Same with the greatest football movie ever made, The Replacements.
  10. I'll second those recommendations and add Douglas Preston's The Monster of Florence. Also, John Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven and Robert Kolker's Lost Girls. Edited to add Errol Morris' A Wilderness of Error.
  11. I generally prefer my cookies softer rather than crisp, but bought the Tate's cookies just to make the Mocha Icebox Cake. I used the chocolate chocolate chip cookies and the result was magnificent. I hadn't made a icebox cake before but it totally made me (and my very skeptical husband) a believer.
  12. I've made the Essential Raised Waffles on both a regular and Belgian waffle iron and both turn out just fine. You just get fewer from the batter with the larger Belgian one. Your waffle sounds delicious! I have been known to put ice cream on a waffle and cover it in maple syrup or hot fudge - for dinner.
  13. My favorite recipe is the essential raised waffles on the Smitten Kitchen website. The batter needs to sit overnight but they are totally worth it. So light on the inside and crispy on the outside. Maybe I should make waffles this weekend......
