  1. Suzanne and Anthony were my favorites. And Julia's rants (especially how she took on that predator Ray Don or whatever his name was...I had to do that once so I was cheering her on big time). Wish I knew the names of some of those character actors who played the eccentrics.
  2. You said it! The right words used, the delivery and timing + the facial expression (or lack of one). All of DW's actors were topnotch at this talent. I remember reading Annie Pott's remarks (back in the early days of the show) that what she loved about DW scripts was that they weren't the typical sitcom ba-dump-dump patter (she described it better but you know what I mean). She said she liked the southern style of talking and a certain type of southern humor that was in each storyline. I'm not a southerner but lived in Raleigh for many years and every once in a while I'd come across a southerner with that hilarious sense of humor. The humor would just sneak up on you making it even funnier (very subtle, not mean, very funny).
  3. Maybe today's teen figure skating competitors are more fragile than the skaters from earlier years. But it happens even when they skate well.
  4. I hope these three teams will keep improving and maybe one of these days beat H/D. Overall, though, figure skating competitions really don't get me excited and interested any more. I'm trying to figure out why. I know all the quads (and so many subsequent splats) have turned me off. Maybe it's the lack of interesting choreography and/or music? Vocals sure haven't helped any in this regard (totally IMO of course). All I know of for sure--is that I don't go nuts if I find I've missed a competition and figure, well, I'll catch up at Nationals and Worlds. I miss having a sport that I love but I sure don't love this sport any more. P.S. The bursting into tears at the end of one's routine is really getting on my last nerve. It's got to stop.
  5. Something new tonight: Chicken Parmesan with Pepperoni, a recipe by Chef Bryan Vietmeier of Seattle's Take 5 Urban Market. It was pretty decent. I just need to gussy up the marinara next time, maybe add more fresh mozzarella and a bit more seasoning (love my seasonings!)
  6. Yum - sounds dee-lish. Happy Birthday!!
  7. Ha! Shades of the O's in Turino, a memorable night of splats in ice dance (especially for the Italians).
  8. I just happened to catch a MTM rerun this afternoon on FE TV (what the heck is that?). Anyway, it was the episode where Lou has to fire Mary. As she was leaving the office, so crestfallen, I actually had watery eyes. And I thought: is there a sitcom today that could produce watery eyes in between laughs? Loved the writing for this show (and several others from those years).
  9. IMO, the most boring was Starr Andrews (boring only because she was skating from one jump to the next, tossing in a few moves here and there). Isn't her coach Derrick Delmore? He needs to make whatever type of change is needed so she doesn't look like all she cares about are the jumps. While watching Mariah, all I could think about was Alissa Czisny--beautiful skating but battling nerves. I wish to heck I could've seen some ice dancing this past weekend - especially S&K.
  10. Gosh - Miss Ina, it seems, is everywhere this week! I read about her in the Washington Post, and NY Magazine (online). She's even in Sunday's Parade Magazine (we get it with our Saturday W. Post). The articles were about her, about Jeffery (of course!), her likes and dislikes, and info' re: her new cookbook. In one article, the interviewer asked if Food Network tried to pressure her into filming her show at their studio. Ina said something like she wasn't aware of that (I guess she meant filming in a studio was not of interest to her and she wasn't even considering it!). So it's promotion time for the new book. I always enjoy reading stuff about the Barefoot Contessa and miss her weekly show at 5:00 PM.
  11. Heh - the comments section almost had a war going between the BC afficionados and the cranky nonfans.
  12. I didn't know where to put this link so it's going here. It's a Washington Post article about Elaine...er...Julia getting the Mark Twain award. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/julia-louis-dreyfus-accepts-the-twain-prize-anybody-would-be-lucky-to-be-part-of-a-night-like-this-honoring-someone-like-me/2018/10/21/af445ef0-d309-11e8-8c22-fa2ef74bd6d6_story.html?utm_term=.9c7eb026e564
  13. Can't remember if I've already mentioned the alstromeria on sale at TJ's. You get a big bunch which can make several arrangements and they last over a week. I can also get them at Safeway and Harris Teeter but at TJ's you get twice as much for the same (or lower) price. Last week they had bins of all kinds of sizes of pumpkins and gourds. Now I've got a nice autumn arrangement on the front stoop (including a big beautiful green, unusual shaped pumpkin). Love Trader Joe's.
  14. Really? How did I miss that gem? Terry's a nice guy and I can't imagine him being mean to Tara. But yeah...how would she know what it's like to return to competition after competing in the Olympics. She went straight to Stars on Ice, bypassing Worlds. I need to listen more carefully from now on ;>)
  15. Oh me oh my was that interesting. And it reminded me how irritated I get when Tara makes remarks about someone's lack of artistry. I immediately have a vision of a gawky 15 year old girl skating lights out around the rink, nailing her jumps but landing with a clunk of each skate back onto the ice, no artistry except for a big smile. IMO, Nathan had a ton more artistry at this past O's than Tara had back in '98.
  16. Alas and alack...no Sprouts in Virginia. I'll just have to keep checking in on Whole Paycheck (geez--it's gotten even more expensive since amazon bought it--where are all the deals we were told to expect?) I really like their cilantro chicken sausage. Was just informed that there are 3 of these sausages in the back of the freezer (who knew?) So I'm defrosting them and will make Ina's Italian wedding soup on Sunday (which is a good day to make soup, right?) Happy weekend, everyone.
  17. I preferred turnip greens but only the way they were cooked at the K & W Cafeteria in Raleigh. I'd squirt some fresh lemon on them and they were wonderful. Wouldn't dare try to make them myself, though (and yes, they were cooked to death but still delicious). Years ago I was at an association executives luncheon/mtg. At each table they had a rep from various hotels. One of the association folks said he never again wanted those green beans that weren't really cooked. He cut into one and it flew across the room. Loved that image and never forgot it (and it sure can happen!)
  18. That's so funny, Giselle: cooked to death collards. Are you from the south? That's how they cook green beans and I love them that way (my family thinks I'm strange but I prefer my green beans southern style, with a bit of bacon or streak of lean for flavoring). I'm going to try this cast iron skillet chicken recipe but will use semi-deboned chicken breasts. Thanks for sharing.
  19. That's a good idea...if I have any left over cause I can really get into them as soon as they come out of the oven (have to really watch my greedy hungry self at this point). I know those Ramen soups are not so healthy but I keep some packages in the pantry for those nights when I just don't feel like cooking. I could pop 2 or 3 of the left over chicken sausage meatballs in the Ramen chicken soup. I like to get the cilantro chicken sausages at Whole Foods and freeze some extras cause they don't always have them in the case. Thank God the weather changed over night here cause it's now really Soup Time!!!
  20. It's those chicken sausage meatballs that won me over. Great recipe!!
  21. I sure do miss having the laundry room on the second floor (had that in our previous house). Back to LIoLI...they sure are staying in NC a long time. I figured they'd do a few years there and then move to another state but it seems they're going back and forth between Raleigh & Durham. I don't like the shows in which one of the spouses grumpily tours the houses with David and makes snide remarks about it not being as great as the old mess of a house that Hilary's trying to fix up. It's not very often these people "list it" but when they do, I'm happy. Their homes are always, IMO, very unappealing. Someone upthread mentioned the woman who bought her grandma's old house. I couldn't stand her whininess and felt sorry for her husband. Hilary did do a decent job redoing the house so that poor hubby could finally feel "at home" there. Re: Hilary's crew finding surprises (leaking foundations, crumbling foundations, asbestos, ghosts, etc)...there were a few shows in which they had the house checked out ahead of time so they knew what they were getting in to. But now they're back to "Hilary...I need to show you something" which is so annoying.
  22. We're grilling burgers & brats. Also having an old fashioned pasta salad using elbow macaroni (would that be considered comfort food?), baked beans, & a tossed salad--50's food :>)
  23. A weasel walks into a bar. The bartender looks up and says, "Wow! In all my years of tending bar, I've never had a weasel stop by. What can I get you?" "Pop," goes the weasel.
  24. ButterQueen: Thank you! I needed that right now.
  25. I'm hooked on TJ's Arrabbiatta marinara. It doesn't have that "jarred marinara" taste at all. Reminds me of the marinaras Italian American neighbors would cook. Just don't add dried red pepper flakes to it until you've tasted it. It's got a teeny bit of warmth to it (but if I can handle it, I think almost anyone can!!) Good job, QUOF!!
