  1. Yeah, I am not seeing it. He is a a very handsome man but he just doesn't work as a hearthrob for me. see also: Ryan Reynolds and... (very unpopular opinion here) Tom Hiddleston.
  2. "Big Pun, Fat Joe ok. Marc Anthony or Ricky Martin, no bueno." "Basically the whole Terror Squad can say it, but not Menudo" And the white office mates were taking notes on yellow legal pads LOL.
  3. Really Funny and observant. Very strong way to return. I was dying from the jump! The school assembly, the teacher dancing, George Bush! So funny. BTW, I love the casting of the teacher who was in charge of the assembly. Lord I think I had her in 6th grade. All of the scenes at Dre's workplace were great especially Charlie and his gun. "Maybe reholster our firearms, Charles." and the explanations of which Latinos can use the N-word (not the JLo types). And all the white folks' reactions during Charlie, Dre & not!Pharell's conversation. Under all his bluster, I thought this observation by Dre was rather deep. "[The white man] either wants nobody to say it because he can't or he wants everyone to say it so he can." Bow looked fabulous. It feels like they stepped up TER's wardrobe a bit. Didn't care much for the B-plot but Junior is always fab.
  4. I finally watched this and was a little apprehensive because of some of the bad advance word of mouth. But this was not that bad, imo. The only reason I can see why people would even attempt to compare this to Sleepy Hollow is because of black female cop/white awkward dude. But thematically, visually, vibe everything else is so different, they shouldn't be compared. This feels closer to Almost Human as others have noted. Having seen Megan in her other cop role on NBC's Deception I have to say she is ten times better here. Not only is she better in her cop persona, but also her acting has a warmth and naturalness that she lacked on the other show. I endured her in that show and in the end gave up. I rather like her here in this one. I have never watched That 70s show so I had no cognitive dissonance with Wilmer Valderama. But I have to say he was my least favorite character & actor of the whole pilot. The smarm factor was high and he was too obvious with it. By contrast the twin brother was also smarmy but he infused his with some charm and a little bit of humor. I always appreciate when an actor presents a few layers to their obviously trope-y character. I like how distinct they made not only the abilities but also personalities and present circumstances of all three pre-cogs: Agatha in her bucolic glade trying to stay away from it all, Arthur in his slick willy high rise using it for his personal gain, and poor Dash running around like a rootless Mr. Robot trying to help people. And finally I love the diversity.
  5. She is a soap opera actress who has been steadily working for something like 30 years. And... get this... she has two Emmys! Two! Gah! How many soap opera actresses of color have been able to work that consistently fo that long? Forget the awards, look at ..as Viola would say.. the opportunity she's had that has been consistently denied WOC.
  6. I know. i didn't watch any new or returning shows yet, but I was curious about the reception of Minority Report and a few others. I saw a lot of shipping speculation between the main characters in the new CBS show Blindspot -- despite the fact that the overwhelming consensus seems to be the male lead is lacking in charisma and the is no chemistry between the mains. And yet... people seem to be open to the possibility of coupledom. Boggles. Doesn't matter to me because I had no intention of watching that show, but still the comparison between the accepted speculation of coupledom between the white protags vs. the immediate pushback between Ab/Ich and even between canon pairings of Iris and Barry is stark. I do intend to watch Minority Report and will reserve judgement, but in all things if the chemistry and vibe is there why not let it play out?
  7. i love Orphan Black and think Tatiana deserves recognition. But I agree with this. I get that she is doing multiple characters but if you think about it, so do people like, say, Key and Peele. There is a psychological sleight of hand at work, imo, when considering Tatiana's work because all her characters are on the screen at the same time. And not to diminish the work she does, but we are further aided in their differentiation by very clear visual cues with hair/make-up. But other actors esp. sketch comedy actors disappear inside multiple other personas very convincingly. And when they are recurring characters they manage to create an expectation of who that character is in the same way Tatiana does. For instance, when I see Jordan Peele's 'Meegan' I know exactly who I am looking at and what to expect and she is very different from his Wendell Sanders character. If they were in scenes together over time I'd probably begin to see them as entirely separate people from their actor. So yeah, Tatiana is talented but she's not doing anything that a lot of other actors aren't capable of she just has the right venue to showcase it. Doesn't mean she isn't good, just also doesn't mean she is automatically better.
  8. Not only blind to her own privilege but a textbook case of white feminism where intersectionality does not even exist. Someone posted her earlier support of Patricia Arquette's Oscar acceptance speech about women & pay & roles in hollywood juxtaposed next to her tweet about Viola saying that her upset about the speech is that awards don't fix racial injustice. So it is ok for PA to use her oscar platform to address issues of gender inequality in Hollywood but not ok for Viola to do the same with racial equality? The hypocrisy is huge. The doubling down , even after the 'I am sorry to anyone I have offended' brand of apology, just reeks of hubris. And it totally makes her apology seem insincere from the jump.
  9. I really love what she did there. She won for leading actress in a drama, so she acknowledged, by name, all the other current black actresses in lead roles in dramas: Kerry, Taraji, Halle, Nicole, Gabrielle and Megan. She did her homework. That speech was everything! re: Promo, I am so over Fox I can't stand it. They ought to be ashamed of themselves. No a single promo of Sleepy Hollow during the whole telecast. They promod' every single live action fox show -- multiple times -- except Sleepy Hollow and Bones -- oddly. There are people who have no idea the show is going to be on Thursdays. They had great platform, a large audience, probably a very diverse audience given the nomniees and couldn't even throw Sleepy Hollow a bone.
  10. Sadly not limited to the 60s. Whitewashed covers on books are still a pretty big issue. One of the more recent wide-spread flareups was the cover of Australian YA novelist Justine Larbalestier's book Liar (http://justinelarbalestier.com/blog/2009/07/23/aint-that-a-shame/) . Her blog post shows the original US cover featuring a white girl with stick-straight hair, even though the character was a black girl who describes her own hair as 'nappy'. The new cover features a girl that looks kinda like Jordin Sparks. Only recently with the rise of self publishing, social media, calls for diversity (#weneeddiversebooks) are people really stepping up the awareness and calling these sorts of shenanigans. Back on topic -- So very pleased to see they have cast Simone Missick as Misty Knight for Netflix's Luke Cage. She actually looks like I think Misty Knight should look. In addition to Ciara Renee as Hawgirl in CW's DC's Legends of Tomorrow, it is finally nice not only to see more women superhero characters but WOC super heroes. In the case of Hawkgirl -- I can't keep up with all the various iterations of the various versions of the superheroes, but I think Kendra Saunders (which is Hawkgirl's real name) might be a case of color blind casting. Or at least there are print versions of HG that show her as white with red hair and not biracial with curly hair.
  11. There are finally some good quality videos of the SH Dragoncon panel on youtube.... here is one but there are a bunch others.
  12. When I saw this spoiler I looked the guy up because the name was unfamiliar. And according to Wikipedia there is some debate over whether he deliberately undermined the war effort because apparently inaction on his part in places led to some showy campaign failures for the British. Apparently there was a resignation & censure etc. etc. Nothing was conclusively proven but he still had a lot of doubters. So there is a little bit of rope there that SH can use.
  13. Finally getting some photos of Ab & Ichabod for new season. I like the shorter hair on her. Not too keen on it for him because I like longer hair Ichabod. But it is kinda growing on me.... (no pun intended). http://thetorontokid.tumblr.com/post/128895023951/more-sleepy-hollow-filming-in-lawrenceville-ga also http://www.screenspy.com/articles/tv/photos/sleepy-hollow-3x01-gallery-i-witness/
  14. A quote like this, I think, we need to remember the context. It is coming from Tvline and probably filtered through some Ausiello or Slezak questions/assumptions. They know that SH fans did not receive the news of Betsy Ross well. TVline's own comment boards are filled with a lot of the same complaints as here. It is probable this blurb is being filtered through some of that subtext. The whole "don't worry' thing, imo, is a direct reference to their knowledge of where the fandom is. They may have asked about Jenny & Abbie and this was the answer they chose to share. I don't think I would necessarily assuming things about Campbell based on this 1/2 of a sentence answer to a question we never even hear. re: DragonCon: I liked the one woman who simply live tweeted with no editorial comment. I think sometimes we can get too caught up in the messiness. I am not gonna lie, all the s2 backstage drama made me want to pull up a tub of popcorn and wallow in the crazy. But at this point I just want to watch a good show and maybe get some good Tom and Nicole face time.I do miss seeing good Miharie interviews, no matter what they are saying. They are just fun to watch.
  15. Chicago Med has just cast Marlyne Barrett as a regular. In addition to S. Epatha Merkerson, YaYa Da Costa and Brain Tee, that would make her the 4th regular POC in the cast, three of whom are black women. Representation does matter and to some extent it factors into what I curate to watch, especially new shows that I might have ordinarily passed on.
  16. Awww.... I loved this one. From the opening with the terrible outfits to the ending with that fantastic scene betweem Emma and Mark. Man, those two have such chemistry. Now I finally see what Maggie saw in Bruce. How can you not fall for a guy who completes you on the dance floor? And of course their song is 'I like to Move it' That party looked hella fun. And finally I love the set up to make you think that Maggie made up the Andie McDowell woman complete with a name that also sounds like she just made it up.
  17. I didn't mind too Joan too much at first, but then when she rather viciously cooed to Paul's black girlfriend "maybe one day you'll be able to pull up in a station wagon and shop at the supermarket as well as work there" I was like, Bitch Please! It was rather poorly done of her and exposed her character as not the Righteous Woman-hero so many of her fans think of her but rather as a petty person who would use something as serious as racial in equality & dehumanizing Jim Crow laws to score points on a romantic rival who didn't even know she was a rival.
  18. It is interesting, because there is another little video out there where someone asks the question and Nicole & Tom very much play dumb as if they had never heard of Ichabbie getting in on before. So that was odd. Maybe they make a conscious effort to treat each question like it is new? Even of they've heard it 1,000 time before. There was a second panel today -- Nicole couldn't make it and John Noble was there with Tom. He threw some more shade at S2. LOL. But more Ichabbie questions came up. Someone asked: Do you think Ichabod would go back to the 18th Century if he could? and Tom says last year he might have given a different answer but this year he thinks he'd choose to stay with Abbie. And then he said "hashtag Ichabbie" But then there was this gem: Tom: I don't think there are plans for them to fall into bed. Makeup guy on panel says: there's no place to go after that Tom: oh, there are *plenty* of places to go after that. So I still think there is that idea that they are gonna keep it all platonic and everyone is toeing the company line, but Tom isn't averse to it as he may sound sometime. At least that is my take on it. Anyway the same person live tweeted the second day and here's the link http://www.onwednesdays.net/con-geek-livetweeting-the-dragoncon-day-2-sleepy-hollow-panel/
  19. My UO is that I can't stand Mellie. Never could. Never will. No she's not funny. No she can't "get it girl!' No I don't feel bad that her husband is cheating on her. None of that. The retcon does not stick with me. I remember S1 Mellie very clearly. I actually would have appreciated her more if she had been allowed say something like 'Yeah you can sleep with her all you want, Enjoy. But I am not divorcing you. I like being married. I liked the power. I like being first lady. Move her into the Lincoln bedroom and frolic all night if you want for all I care. Just shut it with the divorce talk." Mellie started out kinda like a baby Claire Underwood from House of Cards. I wish SR had doubled down on that. I would have liked that Mellie.
  20. Someone live tweeted the dragoncon panel. here: http://www.onwednesdays.net/sleepy-hollow-at-dragoncon-panel-livetweet/ Also on twitter there is a lovely little ten second video at the end of the panel of Tom complimenting Nicole and she has this kinda embarrassed look on her face and then she holds out her fist and he bumps. Cute as hell.
  21. Oh yay! For a hot second I thought it was you but wasn't sure. I can't even think S2 & Katrina without using that phrase.
  22. I loved watching LA Complex on the CW. It was surprisingly good and had one of the best, most lovely tortured romances between deeply closeted hard core rap guy Kal King and the lovey Tariq. But my favorite music moment was the recording of the song Hard Times, with Cassie Steel providing backing vocals. It made me want to go out and get the actual song! First part Second part
  23. Lol. I too love "Handwavium" Cynic. I still use "Vortex of Stupidity" which I first heard in this group, not sure who to credit with that one.
  24. Although I like last years poster better, I do admit that the tagline is very clever. Who knew they still had it in them? And Tom and Nicole are ridiculously pretty! I've also seen a cropped version of the poster where each on of their faces are halved (i know, sacrilege!) But it emphasizes the arched eyebrows a lot more.
