  1. Asian Sun and Jin (Korean) - LOST. Black Mary Jane's parents - Being Mary Jane (not a super couple) Annalise Keating and Nate - How to Get Away with Murder Earn and Van - Atlanta (admittedly on again off again) Just looked up my favourite dramas to try and find examples
  2. I've been watching baseball every day of the season for the past 5+ years, and no it wasn't. I thought it was absolutely fine. I was never watching the show and suddenly shocked into thinking "OMG, am I watching baseball???" I always knew that I was.
  3. It was revolutionary in that it was a sports show about a woman, and that a black woman was the main character. It was very quietly revolutionary in those 2 ways. My only criticism of the show was that it was a bit cheesy. Kylie would have become stronger as an actor with time. It's a damn shame that the show was cancelled.
  4. I'd choose Speed, Something's Gotta Give, The Lake House, and with reservations, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures and Bogus Journey. I always considered myself such a big Keanu fan, but I guess I'm not the greatest fan of his movies. There are sooooo many Keanu films I've been meaning to get around to watching: Dangerous Liaisons, Much Ado About Nothing, and maybe The Devil's Advocate? I don't know if I ever got through Point Break.
  5. Well, people complained to Aziz after season 1 about this, and he certainly listened. In Season 1 Aziz's character only had white love interests, didn't he? He might have dated one east Asian woman on a blind date that lasted about 5 minutes. I think it's a dramedy - a hybrid of comedy and drama. Hey, I love sitcoms but there are sitcoms (The Office, That 70s Show, Seinfeld) and then there are dramedies (Sex and the City, Gilmore Girls, Master of None.) Regarding CBS - I do love Survivor - and it's quite a multiracial show - it better fucking be, after 34 seasons or whatever. Speaking of American audience biases, the difference between a thread like this and the Survivor threads here are night and day. The comments you'll read about the Asian, black, and Latinx contestants in the threads here.... Hooooooooooo boy. One poster literally threw out Ching Chong slurs. (Until it was reported and deleted, but still. These kind of sentiments pop up every episode.)
  6. A boss "offering you sex" is not just putting you in a weird position. It is one of the definitions of sexual harassment. A person who has the power to fire you, power to demote you or promote you, power over your career, power over your career reputation, power over your employment, power over your salary and compensation, should not be "offering you sex". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_harassment And in Gilead the situation with the doctor and June is even worse, in my opinion, as women do not have the rights that women even do in our society, but I talked about why it's worse upthread.
  7. Roller derby = women..... (stereotype = lesbians) Modern roller derby is an international sport dominated by all-female amateur teams, in addition to a growing number of male, unisex, and junior roller derby teams, and was (as a roller sport) under consideration for the 2020 Summer Olympics.[6][7][8] Roller derby began its modern revival in the early 2000s as an all-female, woman-organized amateur sport. A large number of contemporary roller derby leagues are amateur, self-organized and all-female [66] and were formed in a DIY spirit by relatively new roller derby enthusiasts.[67] In many leagues (particularly but not exclusively in the U.S.), a punk[68][69] aesthetic and/or third-wave feminist[70] ethic is prominent.[71] Furthermore, roller derby teams are typically composed of members of various social strata such as stay-at-home mothers, lawyers, and nurses,[72] and "Being gay/straight/bi/trans is simply no big deal, as long as you can skate."[73] Members of fledgling leagues often practice and strategize together, regardless of team affiliation, between bouts.[74] Most compete on flat tracks, though several leagues skate on banked tracks, with more in the planning stages.[75][76]
  8. Extremely confident the movie will bomb and I am happy about it Someone tweeted that he looks like "RC Cola Bradley Cooper"
  9. Don't be so hard on yourself, it was 20 years ago ;)
  10. To me, I don't take that as the point. I'd rather have our free society and our laws (adultery NOT being against the law) and people having the freedom to have consensual sex with each other as long as both people are adults. I do not think there is a parallel between June being a cheater and therefore 'deserving' this for being bad to another woman. I think it is about how no matter what I would rather be free to have some asshole cheat on me with another woman than to live in a society like Gilead. By the way, most if not all of us already live under patriarchal oppression, there are just degrees. I did not lose any sympathy for them. Cheating is cheating, but the stuff going on in Gilead is so much worse, so no I do not put cheating as 'one of the worst'. Murder, rape, torture, genital mutilation, imprisonment, lack of privacy, slavery, all happen extremely frequently in Gilead, so I am surprised that Luke being a cheater is what people are morally horrified by. That's just everyday shit. I'd rather deal with that any day of the week. I also think it's funny (sickly funny) that some people are having viscerally negative reactions to the Commander now. Like now they think of him as repugnant. LOL. Because before he was Captain Morality or something. He's a fucking rapist, and has been since Episode 1. And he has always raped under the threat of death. But NOW people seem to hate him.
  11. Luke and June represent the Every Couple. Their great romance is not supposed to take your breath away. June is not your role model. She's just a woman. She has a regular life and she did things that aren't perfect. It doesn't matter what Luke and June are actually like; they do not deserve the hell that has come to them, the Gilead, this society. Anyway, I haven't read the book, but that is how I take them. They are not supposed to represent Romeo and Juliet, just you and me and everyone.
  12. I agree with you @Rinaldo that I would not place Richard on the autism spectrum. Further, I think he does have great perception of social cues. He is extremely affable. Everyone likes him, even these assholes. Sure they make fun of him, but that's their own defense mechanism. If he was so bad at social cues then why would he be so friendly and smiley all of the time? His friendliness is for the benefit of not only him, but others. It probably makes people feel good. I think Richard is smart and observant. He's literally constantly observing things. He just is not mean, or sarcastic, or cold like the other characters. Veep is not representative of a necessary norm. It's a collection of people who are mostly cold and bitter from their experience in Washington - my opinion.
  13. A doctor is in a position of authority to a patient (like teacher and student, like boss and employee) and tried to coerce her into sex. And tried to convince her that it was her best option. Furthermore, we know that June is an EXTREMELY vulnerable position. Literally she was in a vulnerable position. Figuratively she is vulnerable. She is a victim of this society that subjugates women by taking all of their agency and power away from them. Any man that tries to have sex with a woman in this society cannot possibly be receiving consent. Women do not have freedom, power, agency and therefore the ability to consent or have consensual sex with men. It is a given that women in this society would be tempted to debase themselves or do what they wouldn't normally do (never consent to, never in 'a million years' think of doing in regular society) to escape the situation. Ofglen tried to give a guard a handjob so he wouldn't imprison her. Do you think that a prisoner in jail can consent to sex with a guard? He or she cannot. It is the same. Handmaidens are victims and prisoners in this society, period. A man attempting to offer a woman in this society a quid pro quo for sex is attempting rape. This man wanted to rape her and was attempting to. I am very depressed that this has to be explained, and it makes me feel so physically ill that I must leave the topic, but not surprised.
  14. LOL @ this being Richard's idea of a hereditary issue. Did Kent mean that he didn't like the insult, or that he wouldn't like the activity? It's hard to believe the latter.
  15. I find sociopathy a lot more abnormal than Richard. I'd love to be surrounded by coworkers like Richard instead of coworkers like.... Dan or Jonah, for example. I always gravitate towards the guileless, and that is Richard for you. Easy to read and understand, will not manipulate or even attempt to. It was so awkward when you could tell Catherine and Marjorie wanted to help explain things to Richard, but not too much I guess? Dan's supermantan was gone this episode, and that's a good thing. I agree, I would like more Ben and Kent. It's too bad about Sufe Bradshaw not being able to be in this season. Selina took away the Letter of Recommendation from Mike, but I've rarely seen her feel so .... 'remorseful'. For HER. She seemed to feel bad about it. (For HER.) I missed some Richard lines, even with rewinding, so I will go to see if @ElectricBoogaloo has done some transcribing in the quotes topic.
  16. To be pedantic, that episode ("The Abstinence") was about abstaining from sex, not masturbation. Elaine's boyfriend didn't want to get distracted as he studied for medical school, and George's girlfriend had mono. Abstaining from masturbation had its own famous episode, "The Contest." None of them seemed to get dumber or smarter, only hornier. I can't believe how much I enjoy Margaret Colin here. I hated her as Mrs. Waldorf. Probably because of my own mother issues. Realizing your father isn't perfect is some rough stuff. I experienced something similar, but 20 years earlier than Selina did. Hers is still worse, though. The end was so scandalous, almost implying that Selina was her uncle's child instead of her father's. Reminds me of another WASP family in the 2002 movie "Igby Goes Down." Sometimes I think Selina and Andrew look too alike. Maybe it makes sense, them both being narcissists. And Catherine looks like neither of them.
  17. @marinw I used to think Life or Something Like it (starring Angelina Jolie) was such a bad movie. Then Trump won. Now it comforts me. (It's a romantic comedy about a woman who is told she only has a week to live. LOL!)
  18. l know Wayne's World 2 was a huge bomb, and that's too bad. When I was a kid I didn't know that at all, and my family and I just loved that movie. Mike Myers certainly has a reputation for being difficult though. He and Dana Carvey did not get along, I think because Lorne insisted that Wayne have a sidekick? Furthermore, his Dieter movie never was released. I read the script in the 2000s and I found it so funny.
  19. Taj, from SWV! I freaking love her. Maybe I should watch that season again. I would like her to come back.
  20. Joey Votto https://vine.co/v/5AQ9npALQQM When Edwin Encarnacion returned to the Rogers Centre on Monday, I spent the first 30 minutes of the broadcast bawling my eyes out. The fans were super classy and the team did a video tribute for him too.
  21. I heard the same as you did. I think the bond between siblings IS interesting. There's good reason there have been countless television shows, books, and movies about it.
  22. I have watched about 25 seasons and either never seen hers or don't remember her. Canadian Thanksgiving occurs on the second Monday in October
  23. I noticed that too. She was speaking above my head. I couldn't even tell if she used convoluted correctly but I was thinking wow I think she did. I have not even thought to use that word in that way before. You are right. It's not.
  24. Oh. I thought it was because Sarah literally expected Sierra to hand over the legacy advantage right then and there and was upset when she didn't. But oops, LOL, I guess you are right. I know it's very popular here to hate the family visits , But I loved them. I cried at Sierra's Dad: "Take my strength." I was BAWLING when Jeff even MENTIONED that Michaela's mom EXISTED before I even saw her FACE and then her face looked exactly like Michaela's. Michaela's mom: "Your mom loves you." bAWAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWL. Then Jared fucking comes out. Jared with his tears falling onto his t-shirt because he sees his mom. I was laughing with such JOY to see that kid. The parents made me cry. Cirie's son just made me erupt in totally gleeful laughter! His smile was EAR TO EAR! I love every minute of this shit. I do not KNOW Monica, her season, and boy do I not CARE to know, but she really annoyed the shit out of me by pretending to be an all-knowing Survivor savant just by calling that Michaela was upset.
